Yes, that's the problem: As I understand the action-finder, you use it with a distance of 6cm to your eye. It is more like a little screen than a finder. This distance in combination with the lower magnification you've mentioned makes focussing quite uncomfortable. I really wonder which Pentax would be comfortable if you're wearing glasses... Hi, The filters i use the most are UVs just to protect the lense, 81B to warm things up a bit, polarizer and a colour correction filter for use under tungsten light (think its an 80B). If i had to take any one filter with me, it would be the polarizer or the 81B. really felt nice to read about your nice day. i was thrilled too. actually, it reminds me - long back not only during my school even during college days too i used to paint - and those concepts of composition still stand valid in photography. in fact, i kind of moved to photography on account of lack of time - couldn't find that much time to do a painting - especially portraits. with camera, you can do a lot. and then i somehow stuck with camera only. however, as i was reading your message, it struck me again - light, composition, colors, contrast, all those things we talk in photography - are basically inherited from painting. thanks a lot for helping me re-new my old interests. anand. >From: Jon Hope <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: My wonderful day, sort of OT >Date: Wed, 04 Jul 2001 02:30:18 +0800 > >Hi all > >I managed to catch up with my 84 year old aunt today, or is it yesterday >already? RE: Suggestions to the list re PUG comments
The chorus, It doesn't seem that complicated to me. That reads as a condescending pompous statement from one who assumes "special" insights. Maybe I'm too uncomplicated. When anyone reads a critique of his/her work, each word sears the sole. Glowing adjectives intoxicate with delight and innocuous, pleasant, patronizing remarks sober the spirit. There is no hiding the truth of their meaning. Be as honest as consideration allows. Simply apply degrees of enthusiasm by carefully selecting only encouraging words. If someone is delusional, they will eventually re-interpret any remarks to mean whatever they want them to mean regardless of their intended message. Obviously, in the case of an international sight such as ours, special considerations must apply. However subtle, language barriers require particular skill to guarantee a sensitive message is accurately received. Jack __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Re: Suggestion to the list re PUG comments
On Wed, 4 Jul 2001, Lasse Karlsson wrote: > I think that this is silly, that we individually should have to post > messages to the list (or at submission - I had totally forgotten about > it) saying that we want comments on our PUG submissions. Well, we're talking about two different things. You don't have to post to the list saying that you want your photo commented on. Anyone from the list can comment on any photo they want to; that remains unchanged. Asking me off-list for comments at the time of submission is a separate thing. That's just a way that you can be reasonably sure that your photo will be commented on, and since the commentators only have a few "assigned" photos, they can sometimes go into more depth than they otherwise could. So, if you want comments, you can do three things: (1) Do nothing, and hope that someone finds your image worthy of talking about. (2) Ask the list for comments. This does not guarantee that you will receive any comments, but it opens your request to the entire PDML to see. (3) Ask me off-list to add your photo to the ones that the commentators will talk about. This hopefully ensures that you'll receive thoughtful feedback about your photo, though it may limit it to one or two commentators. There's no reason why you can't do (2) and (3) both, though part of the idea of the organized comments was to reduce the amount of list traffic asking for comments. > Who doesn't want his/her picture commented on? If there is such a > person I rather think that this person is the one who should say so. Since the PUG and the PDML are separate entities, the list consensus was that submitting to the PUG is not necessarily a request for organized comments from the PDML. Also, some people use the PUG just for sharing photos that have a special value or meaning to them, and that don't necessarily have any artistic intent or value. The PUG is not a critique-oriented site. On this basis, I'm for leaving the organized comments as an opt-in process, and not as the default. This is probably confusing for some because they don't understand the distinction between the organized comments and comments in general. I don't think it's a good idea to have organized comments on every photo submitted, for the above reasons. However, if a photo catches your eye or if you feel like commenting on it for any reason, every photo is wide open for general comments to the list. There are *no* restrictions on talking about any photo you want to. All I'm saying is that the *organized* comments are something that should be requested by the photographer if they want them, and not done for every shot submitted. As far as general comments or criticisms go, feel free to jump in and say stuff! > Each new PUG used to be a party. Now it's like nobody dare say > anything and there seems to be a general confusion about it. I hope that this email clears up some of the confusion. If not, ask me again. :) > I suggest that default mode be "Comments welcome!". This is the > obvious and easiest way, isn't it? Unsolicited comments about any photo you feel like saying something about are always okay, IMO, as is asking the list for comments on your submission. Just don't expect your photo to be part of the organized commentary unless you specifically request it to be. If this is still too confusing, or if people don't see the value of the organized comments, I don't have a problem with abandoning the idea altogether. chris - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. It's a bit tricky to work with since you can't use a safelight, but the results are acceptable. Anyway, I'm mostly confused > about the terminology surrounding flashes (manual, auto, TTL, non- > TTL) and what will and won't work with the ZX-M. Any enlightenment/ > suggestions on technique/equipment? Hi Paul, Welcome to the list! Maybe I can help you out. Hopefully one of the other list members can help you out if I lead you astray. Pardon the long answer MANUAL: You figure out the proper lens aperture and subject distance from the flash unit's guide number. For instance, I believe your AF201SA has a guide number of 66 (in feet). Provided you are using ASA 100 film, the correct lens aperture multiplied by the correct distance-to-subject will be equal to the guide number. For example, you might use ASA 100 film, a lens set at f/4, and a distance to your subject of about 16 feet. This will give you a *fully illuminated* subject. (This is different from fill flash -- more on that below.) If you use film faster than 100 speed, just multiply the guide number for your flash unit by the square root of the speed ratio. Thus, for 400-speed film, the guide number would be 66 times the square root of (400/100), or 132. You could thus shoot subjects about 32 feet away at f/4, or about 16 feet away at f/8, for example. Just to complicate things further, some flash units will allow you to discharge the flash at less than full power. Many of the Sunpak units, for instance, allow you to discharge at full power, 1/2, 1/4, or 1/16. For fill flash, you generally don't want all of the light illuminating your subject to come from the flash. Your subject may be partially illuminated by the sun or other ambient light, and you just need a little extra to partially fill in some of the shadows. If you're shooting people, keep the sunlight out of their faces to avoid squinting, etc. From your distance to subject, calculate the proper aperture for full flash illumination, then stop down the aperture a bit (perhaps a stop or two further, to allow for less light on the subject). Using your camera's meter, calculate the correct shutter speed to properly expose the background of your scene at the aperture you just set your lens to. Hopefully the correct shutter speed will be slower than the X-sync speed for your camera (1/100 sec for the ZX-M, if I remember correctly). This is where a variable-power flash unit sometimes comes in handy. AUTO: A little sensor on the front of the flash unit measures the flash intensity reflected off the subject. When enough light has been detected, the flash unit quenches (or shuts off) the flash. Thus, the duration of the actual flash will be longer for darker scenes and shorter for lighter scenes. You can generally do fill flash with these types of units by either setting the film speed dial on the flash unit to a faster film speed than you have loaded, or by stopping down your lens a bit further than the "correct" aperture displayed on the indicator scale on the flash unit. TTL: "Through-the-lens" metering. A little sensor inside of your camera measures the flash intensity at the film plane. Your camera body would then tell the flash unit when to quench the flash. This requires a dedicated flash unit, specific for your camera, and a TTL-capable body. If I remember correctly, the ZX-M is not capable of TTL metering. Generally, non-TTL units are AUTO. A NOTE ON EQUIPMENT: You may wish to pick up a more versatile flash unit at some point. A useful feature to have is a bounce head -- one that can be angled from horizontal to vertical. Another useful feature is a swivel head -- one that can be rotated from a straight-ahead position to an off-to-the-side position. This way, you can bounce the harsh flash off of a ceiling or wall to get a more diffused and natural light. Hope this helps. Good luck! It's not really a separate process...you're probably thinking of Panalure paper, which used to be the only paper you could use to do this. Oriental makes a paper to do this now too...I guess you'd call them chromogenic papers. I've heard the Oriental is nice, but of course all these papers are evil and anyone who wants a b+w print should be elbow deep in hypo and sleep on 100 pound bags of dektol. Just tell them you want a b+w print from a color neg, and make sure they don't print it on regular b+w stock. You can also do this digitally, of course. tv - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. well, i did it/was: 1st zoom/A35-105/3.5
well, i did it. plunked down good old american coin (actually it was a us postal money order) and bought my 1st lens, a zoom no less, the KA 35-105mm/f3.5 w/ macro. sounds nice doesn't it? bought it for a "fair" price though i thought i could have gotten it for $20-$25 less but sometimes u push aside the extra sawbuck and buy it anyway. if all goes well, should be here this time next week. now, my questions are about a 2x teleconvertor. i know that such a device will not be of the optical quality of a true long prime but since one reason i bought the above zoom was for an upcoming trip out west and that i love telephoto compression, i was thinking a 2x could make the "new" zoom into a 70- 210mm. anyone ever use a 2x on the above zoom? results? should i only buy a pentax 2x or can i buy a 3rd party (such as the oft-sold vivitar) anything special i should look for in a 2x? thanks again pug-sters for your advice on my 1st lens purchase. it will go well with the mx and i'm hoping the results will merit my postings on the pug page. be well. robo - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. A clue to the flash-impaired?
First-time poster... go easy on me :) I've been using my ZX-M for about six months. On a recent vacation I took some photos in extreme, almost overhead, sunlight. I did what I could when composing to try and get the sun behind me, but... let's just say the photos are less than what I'd hoped for. Lots of shadows on the subjects' faces... some of them are very underexposed as well (the landscape looks great, though!). I'd now like to learn some more about fill-flash. I understand the basic concept, but I'm confused about equipment. My ZX-M came with the AF201SA flash, but my understanding is that it's not very appropriate for fill flash. If I'm wrong, let me know! Anyway, I'm mostly confused about the terminology surrounding flashes (manual, auto, TTL, non-TTL) and what will and won't work with the ZX-M. Any enlightenment/suggestions on technique/equipment? Thanks! - Paul - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Thanks for your comments, William. I wasn't going to take this picture. The guy was in a funny pose, but it was just that, and I don't like sneaking pictures of drunks or homeless people. When the train came, I realized that the guy wasn't moving, and there was going to be a big contrast between his stillness and the moving train. I set the shutter to 1/15, metered on the ground, composed and fired. I think I did notice the cigarrette in the floor when framing the shot. Despair, hopelessness. They maybe make the picture interesting, but they came afterwards, during editing. I cannot claim I plan for these things to happen. Thanks again, j -- --- Juan J. My wonderful day, sort of OT
Hi all I managed to catch up with my 84 year old aunt today, or is it yesterday already? Whatever. :-) I haven't seen her for almost 5 years and haven't visited her for the best part of twenty five years. My mother had told me last week that she (my aunt) wanted to have a look at some of my photographs, and maybe I'd like to look at her paintings. I couldn't agree quickly enough. Anyway, we popped down there for the afternoon for a visit. My aunt is 84, going on 25. She still paints, and has about 3 works on the go at present. She and my uncle had dragged out every canvas for viewing. Some of them are absolutely wonderful. One took my eye almost immediately, a painting of a street in ... erm ... [insert city in Europe here]. My mind is playing silly buggers with me, I'll remember the city later, about a minute after I post this. It is a most wonderful picture. I'm probably the worst art critic in the world, and that'd be stating the bleeding obvious. I was smitten with the painting, and I'll have to talk to my mum about what it'll take to acquire it. We talked about her methods and how she was still learning how to do things. We talked about light, we talked about colours, we talked about technique, we talked about composition. It is a shame I have as much talent as painting as I do at bricklaying, which suffice to say is almost nil. I was amazed that she was still learning new techniques, some of which require quite a deal of control to master. She was unfazed about learning them, but her eyesight isn't as good these days, so it is a bit harder than it should be. :-) We talked about how she got started, and how she wasn't allowed to draw when she was a kid. It wasn't until she was living on the farm, and things were good, that she picked up a paint brush and started to paint. She still goes to workshops, and showed us a charcoal on paper drawing she did at the last one she attended, about 2 years ago. The workshop was on getting ideas on paper in a short amount of time, using the minimum amount of effort (or something like that). I reckon had the person in the drawing walked in the door he would have been recognised from the drawing. All in all, some of her insights will be incorporated into how I see images when I'm about to photograph them. We got onto my photographs. Where I look at the picture and see the image, my aunt was taken by the light on objects, by how scenes flowed, how the colours came together in a scene. I said she could keep any of the photos she wanted, as I have the negatives, and re-prints are pretty cheap. She was unsure, but I still left about 20 or 25 photos with her. I found it pleasing that a lot of the ones she wanted to keep are among my favourite photographs. The one she liked the most is the one that sits above my computer here at home. The same photograph is my backdrop to windows at work, and has been for the past year and a half. One day I may get around to submitting it to the PUG, but I'm more inclined to be selfish, and keep it to myself. LOL I left thinking it would be a shame to let 5 years go by without visiting again. Maybe I will take some 12 x 8's when I go visiting next time. All in all it was an inspiring day. I came away feeling that if I live to be 85, and still think of myself as a wrinkled 25 year old, I'll be doing alright. If I can still be learning new things at the same time I think I'll have done better that could ever have been expected. Like the subject says, it was my wonderful day. I just thought I'd share a bit of it with the list. Cheers Jon Relax! Take life as it comes, you can't chase the sun, you can't race the wind - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: New Lens ???
I personally would like to see as many different Pentax lenses as possible; I just won't hold my breath for a 17-35/2.8 though. Firstly they need to upgrade the FA* 28-70/2.8 and the FA* 80-200/2.8 with models without power-zoom. A better idea in my opinion is to make an 24-70/2.8 to complement the rumored FA 18/2.8 Limited. As you say, these zooms are popular among photo journalist but that market has never been of much interest for Pentax, nor is it the most demanding use concerning optical quality. Have others than me noticed all those National Geographic wide-angle shot with fuzzy corners obviously shot with these crappy modern lenses? Two things are of major importance in a wide angle: Close focusing ability and flare control. Zooms are good at neither. Sugimoto Picture Needed Urgently!!!
Hi, gang. sometime ago we talked about Sugimoto pictures and time exposures. Somebody told he has the book of Sugimoto "Time exposed". I need a scan of the infamous "cinema screen" shot. It's for an university work (I study graphic design). It will not be published anywhere, so it's not a terrible copyright violation. I tryed the web, but found another pics, not the cinema's one. Re: Kodak and the Digital Age
There was also a pretty good article about Kodak and their relationship with Microsoft in yesterday's Wall Street Journal. It seems that one of the initial builds of Windows XP made it nearly impossible to use Kodak's software. It also had some fairly accurate barbs about the skill and effort of "the average picture taker". RE: Computer Security
Not to worry. It was just a one-time pointer to some useful information since it appears that we all seem to be computer users as well as camera users. I promise to keep my future posts on topic, if everyone else does too, but I reserve the right to respond to posts made by others, as did you. Interesting concept, swamping this list! I'd say it's way too late to worry about that problem. ;-) Len --- > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Dan Scott > Sent: Monday, July 02, 2001 11:17 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: RE: Computer Security > > > >Please keep us updated with any important security > info. I could not relate to your description at first, could not find any plastic clips execpt for the ones on the belt and shoulder straps (but they look OK). Then I saw you mentioned the strap-buckle, well I NEVER use that, I find it more convenient to use it as a back-pack. I just checked the strap that came with it, and on this one all the clips and rings are made of solid metal! Now this packpack is just two months old, maybe they learned from experiences like yours ... Regards, JvW - Jan van Wijk; www.fsys.demon.nl - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Feel free to comment on my pug entry
Hi Frank, Thanks for taking time to comment on my photo. This was one of my first photos with the FA*200/2.8, i quite like this lense. I got a few others that had a weird bokeh, but i quite liked the bokeh in this one.
