tom wrote:

Ha! That gave me a good chuckle. For a few days I smelled
like socks. My washing machine broke and it took a while to
get a new one. Although some time ago I had the foresight to
purchase 40 sets of underwear, so I was cool in that
department, I had run low on socks, and had to wash a few pair
in the bathroom sink in order to get by. That doesn't get 'em
as clean and fresh smelling as the washing machine.

Things I've been musing about:

The new washing machine has a "delicate" cycle, and I've been
wondering if it could be used to wash proof prints. Will
fabric softener reduce their sharpness?

Is there any down side to washing developing tanks and reels
in the dishwasher?

My first test shows Pentax 50mm lenses to be as sharp as my
Leica 50mm lenses. Why does this trouble me? Perhaps I
should redo the tests. A $700.00 Leica 50mm/2.0 should be a
lot better than a $20.00 Pentax M50/2.0, right?

Where are my glasses?

Speaking of which, sorta, Pentax large format and enlarging lenses would

One clever dodge to protect from pickpockets that I came across
many years ago is to pack your gear in a baby's nappy ( daiper

padded for protection. I cannot think of a pickpocket snatching a

Of course the interior can be customised with partitions from your

Re: Photo BackPack.

2001-07-20 Thread markcooper

Hi Paul
I've been using a Tamrac Expedition 5 for a number of years and am very
happy with it. I use it mainly on weekends away in our local Drakensberg
Mountains.

One problem, not with the TE5 in particular, but with all backpack bags is
having to sling the thing off, unzip, locate the body and lens needed and by
then possibly miss the shot. What I have learned to do is to keep one body
with a medium zoom/macro around my neck in readiness. Sometimes I
simply sling my "No Fat" kit on my shoulder for a day hike.

From memory, of what I have gathered on this lens .

It has a *very* short zoom range, maybe 32-38mm or something
like that and the idea was maybe along the lines of fine-tuning
the image to fit a slidemount window. After a bit of practice
you could supposedly frame at some point (relative to the slide
mounts you were using/getting back from your processor) and then
"zoom back" to widest and have your "perfect framing".

Re: New Pentax LX with AF!!!!!!!!

2001-07-20 Thread Bob Blakely

Camera body...
1.Put the AF sensor (and light sensor) where the current light sensor
is.
2.Add sensor electronics and focus indicator, etc.
3.Add mechanical link to bottom of camera for focusing, along with some
additional sensor/servo coupling.
4.Add thin LCD screen and recessed programming buttons to the back.
5.*All* else remains the same (wind lever, interchangeable finder,
interchangeable focus screens, etc.
6.If you're a whiner about the extra programming features on the camera
back, put a standard back on and live with only the addition of aperture
priority mode and focus confirmation, and perhaps a choice of metering
modes.

Winder/Motor drive...
1.Add coupling from AF mechanical link to AF servo, use wind/rewind
motor as servo drive.
2.Add servo drive electronics.
3.Design the Motor drive AF similar to the ME winder, but with battery
component in the grip. Push a recessed button, and it drops out like the .45
clip. Pop in a freshly charged one, or a holder for dry cells. The bottom
holds the servos/motors and could be thinner now.
4.Yes, I suppose purists could get one without the AF servo and
electronics.

Redesigning the LX doesn't necessarily need to upset anyone (except those
with a purist emotional attachment).

Regards,
Bob...

Re: Why I won't be using a tripod unless I really need it.

2001-07-20 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Hi ...

This Tiltall is not the original, rather, it is a model made
by Leitz after the Marchioni brothers sold them the rights to
produce it. I can attest to the quality of the original
Tiltall, #4602, made by Marchioni in Rutherford, NJ. It has
been said that Leitz "cheapened" the tripod, although I no
longer remember all the details. I vaguely recall that
fittings were not as solid and that the machining of certain
parts were not up to the standard of the Marchioni models.
Subsequently Leitz sold the design to Star-D, a company the
cheapened the tripod even more. New "Tiltalls" can still be
purchased, but while they follow the same general design as
the original, their quality suffers greatly by comparison.

If one is seeking a Tiltall, opt for a good quality Marchioni.

BTW, I think your time frame is a bit off. 40 years ago
Marchioni was making the Tiltall. Leitz, I believe, came into
the picture in the very early seventies. Some time ago I
posted a detailed message to the list about the history of the
tripod, which had the date of the change over and some more
details about the differences between the various iterations
of the Tiltall. A quick search of my hard disk doesn't turn
anything up. It may be archived in a zip file somewhere.

IAC, the Tiltall is a wonderfully constructed, well conceived
idea about what a tripod should be. While it doesn't offer
lots of bells and whistles, it is strong (clearly capable of
holding small view cameras), light (6-lbs), the handles are
easily removed and stored for transport in a suitcase, and one
leg is removable and can be converted to a monopod. Somewhere
I have a photo of Elliot Erwitt using one with a 4x5 camera
mounted on it. It's an ideal 'pod for 35mm work.

Oh, one more thing. I noticed that B&H is selling a quick
release for the Tiltall. While this is probably designed for
the new model, I suspect that it will work for the older
models as well.

okay pug-sters, anyone willing to admit that they occasionaly use a point

if so, what p/s do u use and why?

i'll get the ball rolling...i use a konica big mini 302 35mm/3.5 to shoot
black and white quick grab street shots. i love the lens, really small
camera so no excuse not to have it all the time and it has +/- 1.5 exp comp
(that is when i'm not using my canon ql17 GIII rangefinder w/a 40mm/1.7 for
b/w)

i also occasionally use an ancient canon af35ml w/a 40mm/1.9 for color
prints. very quick lens and though clunky by today's standards, i just like
the feel of this camera.

that's of course when i don't have the mx in hand.

I find that the multi-function switch gets in the way of my right fingers,
but that's a small price to pay for having the switch.

> I even liked the feel and the throw of the winding lever.

What I don't like about the winding lever is that I tend to shoot with my
right thumb between the lever and the body, with a bit of pressure on the
lever. Makes it very secure to hold it with one hand, and I'm right in
position to wind the film quickly. This works fine on my Super Program
and M42 stuff, but for some reason the LX doesn't like this, and freezes
if I put pressure on the lever while trying to take a shot. Frustrating.

Question for Pål: where did you hear this, and who said it? Is there a
transcript online anywhere that you know of?

Wrong-o... Pentax came out this year with a 28-105 and a 28-120. For
details, see:

I suspect that the Samsung was a 38-105, though.

New Pentax LX with AF!!!!!!!!

Whoa. Let's not let this go by. Really?

This would be amazing.

I just sent my "loaner" LX back to my friend Bob Meier. I've been using and
testing numerous cameras for many years now, but had somehow always missed
trying an LX. As most of you knew years before I did, it's a truly seriously
wonderful piece of gear. I liked virtually everything about it--except one
thing. I'll get to that.

I have to say that the LX with the Grip B and a nice M lens attached amounts
to the most comfortable-to-hold 35mm camera that I've ever had in my hands.
Bar none. It's just the tops.

Second best feature is the marvelous finder optics. Viewfinders are a _bête
noire_ of mine--I almost cannot be pleased with them. The LX has optically
the best manual-focus viewfinder I've ever used on an SLR. Leica can only
dream of finder optics this good--not until the R8 has it built anything
that comes close.

Build quality, size, and weight are all outstanding, with the _possible_
exception that it might be a wee bit taller. I loved the "multi-purpose
lever" (is that what they call it?) I even liked the feel and the throw of
the winding lever. This camera shows such exquisite judgement--everything is
balanced, synergistic, apt. Superb.

I could go on and on here, except that I don't NEED to. You all know the LX
better than I do. You could tell _me_ what I liked about it.

The ONE thing I disliked about it is that it's very loud. This is another
pet peeve of mine--I don't like to "shout" when I shoot, I guess because I'm
shy. I don't like a shutter that will wake sleeping babies. This may be a
peculiarity of mine, I grant you--I know that when the F4 came out, some
fashion photographers were miffed because it was too quiet--models would
take the shutter sound as a cue to take a new pose, and they couldn't get
into a rhythm if they couldn't hear the shutter. But this and this alone is
what would keep me away from an LX. And this is really just a matter of
taste.

Can you just imagine what Pentax could do today if they were going, as Pål
says, "to make a camera the owners would want to take with them to their
graves"?

It's almost too much to contemplate.

The only problem they might have would be staying close enough to the
"spirit" of the original LX. It was so good as it was

This bears watching. Closely.

This makes my day. Thanks, Pål!

Guide to how to ruin a perfectly good camera:
Step 1: Make it auto-focus.
Step 2: Remove any useful focussing grid and replace
with useless square box.
Step 3: Remove the wind-lever and make it autowind.
Step 4: Replace the glorious "thunk" of the shutter
with high-pitched squeal.
etc,etc,etc.

Just my opinion, don't get your knickers in a twist.

I live in a smallish city (700,000) where people tend to be pretty good on
the whole, but I still wouldn't leave my gear lying around anywhere. At
the same time, I wouldn't expect anyone to try to steal it while I'm

I was wondering what you guys do to protect expensive

travelling. I mean, here in New Zealand, you could
wander around with 10 of the latest high-tech bodies
around your neck, and still have 10 bodies when you
got home. Or you could leave one on the ground and
either 5 people would come running after you to return
it, or it would still be there when you went back 2
hours later. But I realise most countries aren't like
this.

Do people try and cut the straps of your camera-bag? I
have heard of this happening with hand-bags. And what
if you just put it in a normal bag? How do you get it
out to take a photo without attracting attention? Or
do you just not take photos?

Geyer, I assume you mean. John Williams is a computer programmer in
California. Or was, last I knew.

Incidentally, what his reference says (_Image Clarity_ p. 191) is that a 200
micron displacement CAN be caused by a pulse, not that it "will cause" it.
And Williams's tables are plainly stated to show THEORETICAL system
resolution losses--a far cry from Mr. Geyer's "blur due to lens movement is
INEVITABLE." Theory doesn't always translate to practice.

I might also mention that various "star point" tests have proved that "safe
shutter speed" parameters vary not only between between individuals but
between cameras. Some cameras are actually _less_ capable of being held
steadily at 1/1000th than at 1/250th, ostensibly because of sympathetic
vibrations in the mechanism.

Also, elsewhere in _Image Clarity_, John Williams points out that ground
vibrations can defeat even the best tripod. Ever stood on a busy traffic
bridge as traffic passes, so you can feel the bridge vibrate up and down?
Well, the same thing on a smaller scale happens most of the time in most
places in most cities. Surveyors have devices to measure ground vibration.

As ever, the best thing to do is make a test for yourself. Get an ND filter
or two and your tripod, head outside, and shoot the same subject with a
tripod, and handheld at every shutter speed down to a second. Compare the
results.

You might be surprised at what you discover.

Photo BackPack.

2001-07-20 Thread Paul Jones

Hi,

This is sort of following on from the previous discussions we've had on the
list about photo backpacks, mainly LowePro.

I've been looking for a Camera Backpack for a while, I've looked at most of
the LowePro, Tamrac and a Domke. I ruled out the Domke one on the price.

I took all my camera gear into a few shops in the city (Melbourne) and tried
the lowepro range, then I went to actually buy one at my local camera store
and he happened to have a Tamrac Expedition 5, I compared it to the Lowepro
ones and the quality of the Tamrac seemed better. It seemed to have
better stitching and much better clips and buckles, also the straps were of
a heavier weight fabric (?). Some of the attatchments on the Tamrac or
metal.

I think the Lowepro we were previously discussing were of a larger size than
this bag.

I have taken a couple of shots of the bag with my gear in it, I think I
might move some of the internal dividers around to better arrange the gear,
I
think I could fit quite a bit more in with them in different spots, this was
my first attempt and there is a lot of wasted space with the current
configuration.

The Tamrac was also quite a bit more comfortable on by back and seemed to
make the gear feel lighter.

Here are the pics, the gear inside is:
MZ5n with FA28-70/4
LX with M50/1.4
F70-210
FA*200/2.8
FA*24/2
Sigma 105/2.8 Macro
2x Tele

http://www.alphalink.com.au/~nrg/tamrac-1.jpg
http://www.alphalink.com.au/~nrg/tamrac-2.jpg
http://www.alphalink.com.au/~nrg/tamrac-3.jpg

It really needs to be organized better, although I doubt I would really want
to carry around much more weight than this.

Its small enough to be taken onto a plane as hand luggage also.

I wasn't arguing for tripods in street photography, Shel... quite the
opposite, actually. I was just trying to point out, in a TIC manner, that
someone who goes into rough areas with a tripod is more at risk than

Re: x-tra cash

Hey listers.

I've got an itch to buy some camera gear (you know how it is)

Buying a Minolta 38~105 lens didn't satisfy

Trying to make contacts in Japan & get one of the last LX's seems to be
out of the question (& a bit pricey). & I don't wanna end up with
someone elses "problem child" in a used LX (plus the x-tra $200 to get it
set up MY way).
E-Bay is ok if yer selling (fools & bidding wars make good company).

I really like the Pentax ZX-5N, but for the same amount I can go with a
Nikon N80.
I can also run across the Canadian border & knock 40% off the Pentax & end
up with a MZ-5N (nutz to the warranty). The 5N seems to be better than the
ZX-7... is it?

Since everyone's making up dream sheets for gear on that mythical 6-month
assignment... dream me into a camera for less than a grand that'll give me
AF & the ability to use the $800 or so I have in Pentax lenses. Ok??

So pose the question as so: Uncle Sam just sent you $700 & your wife says
it's ok to get a new camera with it. What ya gonna do??

There are lots of good photos waiting to be taken. Many of them won't
need a tripod to be effective, and many of them *couldn't* be taken if a
tripod was thrown into the equation.

I usually hate quotes, but Vestal is just so damned quotable.

When I started photographing, I followed the advice that a tripod should
be used whenever possible. I'm a pretty healthy guy, so "whenever
possible" translates to just about all the time. I'm slowly weaning
myself off of this and other bad advice I got when starting out. Some
subjects just aren't suitable for tripod work.

Content, not resolution, makes a good photo.

Re: M24~35/3.5 (was Re: A Harder Game

2001-07-20 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Hi ...

Bob, it was your comments about the lens that ultimately
motivated me to get one. Most folks here know I don't care
much for zooms, but this one is different. It's small, light,
agile, has a relatively short throw through the focal range,
and is pretty sharp and contrasty. It's not sharper, nor will
it replace any of the good Pentax primes in that range wrt
ultimate image quality, but it does come reasonably close,
especially if one is content with print sizes up to about
8x10, maybe 11x14 if using the proper fim/developer and taking
care while shooting.

Compared to the various Pentax 24~50 zooms, which a few people
like for their focal range, this lens is about 1/3 lighter and
about 1/3 smaller. The constant aperture is a great feature,
and the lens is just about as fast as some of the
well-regarded primes it might replace, such as the K24/2.8 or
K24/3.5, the K28/3.5, and the K35/3.5.

Because it's got a short focal range, it's ideal for making
slight cropping adjustments on the film, but you still have to
compose with your feet. It doesn't allow any of that
"cropping from a distance" business that some zooms allow,
which gives one an opportunity for closer involvement with the
subject. It's a great lens for working with people as it's
small enough that it's size is not intimidating. It's one
great general purpose lens, and my equipment case would be
much the poorer without it.

Another nice thing about it is that, because of the shorter
focal range, there are several very good lens hood options
that will protect against flare reasonably well throughout the
focal range, unlike, for example, the 24~50 zooms.

If you're a manual focus user, and want a great wide angle
zoom, this is it. Forget those Sigmas and Tamrons and
Tokinas. Make an effort to find one of these puppies. Treat
it well and it will provide years of great photos.

Re: More Tripod Follies?

2001-07-20 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Yes, but without a 'pod you're less intrusive, better able to
blend into the environment, and have a much better chance of
actually interacting with the people you want to photograph.
Big cameras, long lenses, 'pods, and the like, are nothing
more than obstacles you have to overcome. Although I know
your comment was TIC, I can tell you from personal experience
there's less chance of being hassled when you blend in and are
friendly and accommodating rather than threatening (lots of
gear, big lenses, loud, flashy cameras ARE threatening).

If one goes into certain areas with confidence and openness,
and takes the time to meet and understand the people, the
chance of getting mugged or hassled is absolutely minimal.
Look at the work of Eugene Richards, for example. He's
photographed inside crack houses, has shots of people shooting
up, and has photographed homeless people and gang members.
Photography is more than "taking a picture". It's about
establishing some sort of rapport with the people you want to
photograph, letting them know you're there not for your
benefit, such as getting a photo you might get paid for, or
for your own aggrandizement, but to show their life and way of
living in a positive manner, with concern and sensitivity.

If you want to get your ass kicked in a troublesome area, go
in with a long lens, and be seen stealing souls from a
distance. Not only will you be considered an outsider, but
word'll get around and you'll be a target. Walk into a
situation with a short lens, get close to the people, talk
with them, show them that you care about them, and you'll more
likely than not be welcome. Best approach is to leave your
camera in your pocket, or at home, while first meeting these
people (and first and foremost, they ARE people, not
subjects). Often the worst that can happen is you get a cold
shoulder, and you'll know it's time to move on.

been much sharper and he'd have earned the recognition he so
rightly deserved. Come shooting with me some day. We'll
shoot in the rougher areas of San Francisco. You bring a
tripod and I'll hand-hold my cameras. Let's see who gets more
sharp photos. Heck, I'll even use slow film and agree to keep
my shutter speeds at or below 1/125 sec.

The point is that a tripod, a monopod, or even Bob's "6' of
cord" method can get in the way sometimes and cause one to
miss a shot. Of course, if you want to shoot pretty flowers,
buildings, still life photography, and posed or rigid
portraits, then by all means use a tripod. But if you want to
shoot life as it happens around you, better leave that pile of
tubing in the trunk of your car or back at the hotel.

Let's remember, too, that Mr. Williams has somewhat of a
vested interest in people using tripods.

BTW, I own several tripods and use them where appropriate.

Re: More Tripod Follies?

2001-07-20 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

If people are going to go to the trouble of using a tripod all the
time they might as well use large format cameras.

35mm is for hand-holding.

Ever since good old Oskar hammered a piece of old pipe into a lozenge
shape and stuck a lens on the front 35mm photographers have done ok
without tripods.

What's Really Right Stuff, and is it all really wrong, like his tripod
advice?

2001-07-20 Thread Bob Walkden

Hi,

I had one of these, and it may well be some of my comments that you
saw quoted. It seems to be quite a rare lens which probably explains
the dearth of mentions. However, it is certainly one of the best zooms
P ever made. The size is excellent, the quality and handling are 1st
class. I was always happy to use it and always pleased with the
results it gave me. For shooting at f/5.6 or smaller it was very
convenient; I'd recommend it to anyone, although I'm not so sure about
it replacing primes - some of the f/3.5 primes have excellent
reputations for optical quality.

Too many answers depend on where a person lives.

In the entire list, some of the film listed is the only film of its type sold
(in the area where the shooter lives). Location skews film choices, as anyone

RE: A Harder Game

2001-07-20 Thread Joe Wilensky

Shel (and PDMLers),

I noticed Shel selected the M24~35/3.5 lens for one of his choices
for the "harder game" quiz -- I picked up that same lens a few months
ago on eBay (I got it for the $200 Buy-It-Now price, thanks to a
heads-up post to this list -- thanks!).
I really like it, but hardly see it mentioned on this list or on
eBay. I know it wasn't made for that long, but it has great reviews
on the Pentax lens comments sites. Who else has or had this lens, and
what are your experiences with it?
To me, it has great construction quality (best "feel" zoom of the M
series?) and seems good enough to replace primes at 24mm, 28mm and
35mm -- especially if the primes you'd be replacing would be f3.5 --
no loss of speed, something unusual when choosing between primes and
a zoom covering the same range.

More Tripod Follies?

2001-07-20 Thread Joe Urmos

Things have been getting dull around here with everyone preoccupied with
Mike's questions.

Here's one thing Bryan Geyer has to say about tripods:

  Why is a tripod essential?

Because blur due to lens movement is inevitable at any shutter
speed slower than 1/1000 sec., and because it promotes greater
care in composition. Handholding is strictly for dead photographers:
A human pulse beat will cause 200 microns (about 0.008 inch)
displacement for 1/10th second. Assuming a shutter speed of
1/250th sec., this movement alone will cause a 22% loss of
resolution with a system that is otherwise capable of reproducing
100 lines-per-mm (lpm). And at a shutter speed of 1/125th sec.,
this performance would degrade to only 53 lpm-a 47% waste of
what you purchased. (Refer John B. Williams: Image Clarity,
  page 191)

Very nice! The pictures of the baby are really fantastic and also

I especially like the picture of the Porsche.

OT: Fat Tripod (head question)

2001-07-20 Thread Bob Poe

I need a geared head for the studio, where I do mostly
copy work. The head I have been using has too much
play in it. I am looking at (surfing B&H since I am
in no-tripod-land) and found the Bogen 3275 mini
geared head and the majestic geared heads with various
size plates. If anyone has had experience with any of
these I would be glad to hear about it. I will
promise not to post any more cat pictures on the PUG.

We've got a slightly later variant of this, where the flash doesn't
retract. It is, as you say, a no-brainer, but produces results.
I've had a couple of the shots from it made into 8x10s, and they
look pretty good to me.

A few weeks ago, though, we got a Canon Powershot G1. This pretty
much replaces the Nikon in the grab-it-and-go camera niche.

He don't know us vewwy well, do he?

While I can't fault the fairly large number of respondents who picked
an MZ-S, 100/2.8, and the 24/2, I'd go for slightly longer lenses:

   MZ-S, FA 200/4 Macro, FA 50/1.4

I'd travel to as many different countries as possible, trying to
capture the way different interpretations of 'civilization' have
spread throughout the world over the ages.
(I presume I'd have a light plane available, too, foe aerial shots).

I considered sticking with what I know best, and spending the time
following the Formula One circus around the world, with side trips
to the African big game parks. For that I'd take an MZ-S, an 85/1.4,
and one long lens (probably a 400/2.8, but possibly a 600/4).

RE: anyone "shoot" w/a point and shoot?

2001-07-20 Thread Lewis, Gerald

YES... 10 or so years ago, I needed a camera I could throw in my briefcase
while on business travel, for both business and personal use. I found a
Samsung P&S with the longest zoom I could find at the time (I think it is
28-105 but I don't have it in front of me). It has been bullet proof over
the years and the lens is remarkably sharp up to 8x12 using 100 speed B/W
film.

To challenge myself, I somethimes go shooting using only one camera body and
only one lens... forces me to make the best use of what I have available
rather than rummaging through a couple of bags of stuff. Usually quite a
challenge to maximize the picture while maximizing the assets of the
lens/body combo, or minimizing its shortcomings. I have also done this with
the Samsung with quite good results. I also keep it available for those
quick shots when hauling out the rest of the gear is impractical or for
inclement weather.

Re: P&S quiz/harder game/winder blues

2001-07-20 Thread Scooterman

The no-brainer camera that I HAVE is:

a Nikon One Touch... early incarnation.

Pretty good metering; good, crisp shots, you can hand it to ANYONE & they
don't fumble for the button; has a lens protector/power on-off door.
My only gripe is that you sometimes want the flash & the camera thinks you
don't need it, so it stays retracted.
But what do you want for a camera "found" at the beach... 15yrs ago??

I used to have a Minolta, but "loaned" to a friends wife which she
"forgot" & took with her back to China.

Surprising shots came from the Kodak 110 I used during my military tour.
When I sent in one roll to Kodak for development, Kodak bought the rights
to a reflected shot of the Pont de Vecchio (Firenzie) reflected in the
river it crosses & another of the island that lies off Dubrovnic,
Yugoslavia.
Not bad for a $20 camera.
~~
Harder game

My program plus (I love this thing)

85mm; 300mm (you can NEVER get close enough for some shots)

28~105; 70~200 if "stuck" wid my current gear bag. =)

Photographing street kids of the world (good excuse to rack up mileage).
Since someone's paying for it, I'm gonna drag it out FOREVER.
===
WINDER BLUES:

I picked up a ME-II winder
Had my repair guy give it a once over

When I attach it to my Program Plus, it'll cycle fine for 2-3 shots,
then cycle but not advance the film till I *cock* the handle towards the
body to forcefully engage the cogs.
Take everything back to the repair guy & of course he can't make it fail.
Grab another winder from the case & it still works fine.

Go home, add film & it sucks. Go back, it still works fine.

Anyone had something similar? What was the "fix"??
==
Dave's Light leak in film

Take the film to a different developer next time.
When/if it shows again, take the camera in.
