Vs: Getting better lenses for my MZ5?

2001-11-03 Thread Raimo Korhonen

IMO Pentax 3.5-4.5/24-90 AF is a very, very good lens, but a bit expensive, though.
Useful focal length range.
All the best!

Aihe: Getting better lenses for my MZ5?

OK, maybe not the very best because I doubt I can afford them. But I would
like to get one or two *better* lenses for my MZ5 (ZX5 to those of you in
the USA). I've noticed there's a significant difference in sharpness
between the Sigma f3.5-5.6 28-80 FA zoom and the old Chinon f1.9 50mm K
mount lens (circa 1981). The 50mm is much sharper, although it has some
chromatic aberration which is disappointing - but then it's a cheap lens.
It's frustrating to buy an expensive film like Fuji Provia 100F and not get
the most out of it.

I've been trying to figure out what the sharpest lens might be that I'd get
the most use out of. The Pentax 50mm lenses get a very good rating at
www.photodo.com, and it's a useful general purpose focal length. I'm think
that perhaps two lenses might be better - one for portraiture around 100mm
and another for landscapes around 28mm. My original idea was to get a
17-35mm zoom two go with the two existing zooms (28-80 and 70-300) to cover
the most focal lengths with the fewest lenses, but sharpness has become an
issue. I've really noticed the difference between lenses when scanning the
film at 2700dpi.

So far, the Pentax f3.5 100mm lens and the Pentax f1.7 50mm lenses look like
good value. Maybe for wide angle, the Pentax f2.8 28mm or f2 24mm?

Any thoughts?

Rob

Hmmm, 50mm + 28mm = 78mm, which is a bit more than the 77!!
HAR!!
Truthfully, I don't like the 77 as a portrait lens in a lot of
situations. It is just too good. Where it really shines is as a
general purpose (long) standard lens. It is incredibly sharp and
contrasty through it's entire f stop range, and has just about
the smoothest bokeh I have seen. This allows for an almost 3
dimensional look to pictures made with the lens, as the in focus
subject virtually jumps off the out of focus background. The
short telephoto allows for picking details out of the scene
better than the 50mm focal length as well.
I prefer short telephotos to any other focal range. My typical
walk about lens is almost always a short telephoto.
For myself, the 77 is not about being serious about modelling or
portraiture (I am primarily a large format landscape type) but
about the art and craft of photography.
I think everyone should have at least one really good lens if
they can manage it. Having a really good lens in the focal range
you are most comfortable working in is a dream come true.
As an aside, my favourite large format lens (and the first one I
reach for almost all the time) is the Nikkor W 210mm f/5.6. This
has about the same field of view as the 77mm (technically it is
slightly wider).

Cotty others, for future reference - we have a Japanese bank account for
just such an occasion.

The buyer uses the money transfer system (although cheques are written,
they
appear to be uncommon) to send their funds to our account. We call the bank
(they won't notify abroad) to ensure the funds are in place. Then the
goods
are shipped from UK - Japan is the single biggest market for the 40mm, and
other rare Pentax optics.

I will work out an appropriate commission let you know.

Kind regards from sunny Brighton

November PUG favourites

2001-11-03 Thread Cotty

I had a chance to sit through the Nov. PUG tonight, and so here's my list
of the one's that jumped off the screen, slapped me in the face, spotted
my glass of wine and took a cheeky gulp, pinched my lady's bum, slapped
me again, and disappeared back onto the screen...

San Francisco, 9/11/2001
by Jaun Buhler
A fantastic shot with great composition and lovely elements, notably the
face and the newspaper. Well presented with good contrast, just the way I
like 'em. Well done. My runner-up for best shot of the month.

Love Saves the Day
Ann Sanfedele
The caption says it is two seperate pics, but the garish colour works
very well as one image. Looks like a store window until you realise the
relative sizes are wrong, but could the dolls be much closer than the
phone user? Intriguing and teasing. Smart work.

Pickering Fog
David J Brooks
Pleasing landscape, I coulda done with it even wider to get more trees on
the left and the building on the right, but then the sun would have
shrunk. You can't have everything! Nice example, nice serene feeling.

Hotel at Guadelupe
Joseph Tainter
The colour! The colour! I could reach into that blue sky and cut my hand
on it. Nice composition. The plug in the background completes the setup
well.

Holiday Sunrise
Bob Sullivan
Very pleasing image that conveys just the right feeling that Bob, I'm
sure, wanted. Cracking shot.

Docked in Paradise
Thomas Cakalic (spellchecker gave me 'cakewalk' on your name!')
I wasn't keen at first because I like a bit of symmetry, I do. But then I
realised the rocks in the water do a good balance for the half-canoes on
the right. The colours and shapes make up good ground too, so I ended up
admiring it.

Saint Peace
M'rcio Rahal
Nice collection of well-observed shapes. Bell, cross, white pointy roofs
with a deep blue sky, what more is needed to tell the story? Nice.

Support
Mick Maguire
Superb study of the bridge support, great shapes and textures. Good tonal
range, everything from the deepest black to the brightest white. Harsh
contrast that adds to the gritty feeling.

Rose Above It
D Glenn Arthur Jr
This pic grows on me the more I look at it. Not technically perfect by
far, but the idea is sound. Look at the brick texture on the flower. Best
done in Photoshop for this kind of thing for the ultimate control. To
actually achieve this manually on one frame is not easy at all. Junior
has lots of promise! Honourable mention award.

Unforgiving Winter
Alin Flaider
Almost monotone except for the lovely browns on the wood and dead leaves,
another pleasing landscape. I love the composition.

Monarto Meer Cat
Darryn Richter
Good effort - made me laugh out loud: I hope that was the intention! Was
the first cat cloned in Photoshop and pasted behind? The first one is
saying, 'That's the last time I have a curry for lunch before a date...'

Innocence and Fear
Gianfranco Irlanda
Never failing to please, Gianfranco has done it again. Excellent
composition. Sonofagun, how does he do it ;-)

Torso II
Karoly Kovacs
Karoly, have you heard of one of my heroes, Jeanloup Sieff (Torses Nus) ?
This is easily as good as the Frenchman's. I spent a long time looking at
this. One of the best studies I've seen of the type. Simply Superb. My
PUG shot of the month. Cangrats, you should be proud!

Mist
Martin Mielke
Lovely subtle colours and tones. Beautiful study with very simple
elements. JMW Turner eat yer heart out.

River of Gold
Maciej Marchlewski
Fine effort by Maciej. The road makes the shot. I like the building too.
Keep up the good work!

Great Blue Heron, Preening
Bill Sawyer
Admire anyone who has the patience to photograph wildlife, especially
nice shots like this one. A real pleasure to look at. Cheers.

Contentment
Mike Smith
Another good bird shot. My hat off to you sir. Lovely to look at.

Huraaa!
Matjaz Osojnik
Great colour and vibrancy in this windsurfer pic. Conveys a real feeling
of 'I've just done it!' Nice use of fill-in flash. Was the water a teensy
bit cool, Mirjana?

A Very Grainy Image
Ken Waller
Ken sees the details of a fallen log, but I see a section of a Humpback
whale. Simply superb. Must be a very blue sky above.

And that's my pick of the pics for this month. I'm always pleasantly
surprised by the very high standard of submissions to the gallery. Always
a pleasure to view them all. Fast becoming a nice tradition for me. Big
thanks to all the PUGsters that make it happen. Like marshals on a track,
the race wouldn't happen without you. Thanks.

Til next month, cheers.

RE: Metz vs. Pentax

2001-11-03 Thread Frits J. Wüthrich

I have the Metz 40MZ-1 with the SCA3702, I think it is about the same amount
of light. The current offerings are called 40MZi-1 and 40MZi-3, one has the
second direct flash build-in, so you have the big flash that you can use to
aim at the ceiling, and still get some less light direct on your subject. I
think it offers all the AF500FTZ has to offer, certainly with TTL, 2nd
curtain sync, zoom head, manual settings, and AF assist. If you buy a
second one with the SCA3800 you even have wireless TTL for the slave,
something the Pentax doesn't offer. I have used it on my ME super in AUTO
setting, so it also can do autoexposure with the build in cell. I am a Metz
fan.

Can anyone (Len?) compare the AF500FTZ vs. the equivalent (or higher
 spec'd) Metz offering?

2 or 3 months ago one my 500's died. No problem, sent it to Pentax and
Alex Grigolia was *more* then kind enough to let me borrow his as a
 backup for some weddings.

Now I should be getting the broken one back shortly...but my 2nd 500
 died last weekend.

Of course, both failures occurred during weddings.

Now I've got to send the other one off and pester Alex some more.

*Or* I buy a third one, and hope that at any one time 2 are working.

I'm not sure I want to do that...I at least want to see what else is out
their before I start throwing money around.

I need TTL, 2nd curtain sync, zoom head, manual settings, and AF assist.

 Suggestions?

Re: Only using my prime lenses - I promise

2001-11-03 Thread MZ3_fella _

Just back from a short break in Seville - took the 20-35mm, 28-70, 80-200
and the 43mm. Probably used the 43mm about 75% of the time. Why - I think
it has to do with 'natural perspective'. Things just looked - and felt
-right with the 43. Once I got into the rhythm it was no problem to step
forward-back-left-right-squat-stretch, instead of standing still and zooming
in and out. When I used the 20-35 it tended to be at around the 35-side
rather than the 20. The 28-70 (on a second body for bw) was usually fixed
at the widest, the longest or the center, ie 28, 50, 70. If the bank
account could afford it, I would definetely opt for the 31mm and the 77mm to
complement the 43. I would then lokk for a wider prime and telephoto.
