The fact is most people that have a computer don't have it because they're computer buffs. They have it because it's a tool that let 's accomplish a task. They have know desire to be computer geeks. But to trust nearly $1000 (have you noticed even as the GIGs go up, the prices for off the shelf brands still hover around $1000?) of your hard earned money, youought to 1. read the manuals-(four times) before you plunge in? That Micorsoft and the computer manufacturer trust that you, computer neophyte, will do what they (and any computer list worth it's salt) will advise you to run a clean machine? But no, just recently on this list, someone comment that they run 20 apps at one time! Me? IF (notice the big IF?) I'm on the net, and am ~not~ downloading, my AV is off, AV protection is off and nearly everything which might use resources are off or disabled. So for me, old lean and clean 4 apps would be the limit. Microsoft of course advertises to sell to the biggest audience. But again, Microsoft/Intel/AOL expect that their end-users will read the manuals, visit the update site they paid to use, read the manuals-etc.. Most don't. *Want to know the one problem that screws up the most problems, other than a Dirty machine? People who are in such a hurry to get things done they actually try to do two or three things at once, hitting keys-rtc. while the computer is processing data. It seems that some people can't wait for the machine, which might take eight-ten seconds to finish its task, to try to initiate another task. ECCHH! Expectations by consumers is that when they buy something it should work. But automakers also give new owners a owner's manual, expecting them to read it. They dont, and are themselves manytimes the culprits when the machine break down or whatever. When Win95 came out I believed the box said 'requires a minimum of 8meg of RAM and some pre-Pentium processor'. We all know that would be a joke, but Microsoft maximized sales that way. And really dense people, after reading the cautions, tried to install Windows95(a) on 286 machines, machines which, IF they were successful in loaidng Windows, had less than 3% of their resouces available for coputing-thus the Windows splash screen itself might take minutes to load. My last machine beofre this one, came with 64MB RAM but I ran it at 320MB for the time I owned it. Im running just over 1 GOG RAM in this machine and only the most resouces intensive apps can ever approach using all of that. there is one more slot for RAM to bring it up to 1.54GIG but I'll never have to buy it. The same goes for thsoe who buy a Windoes XP machine and run OEM RAM on it and those who buy Windows(X) machines and run freeware/shareware on it. I run Photoshop 4.0 right now on Pentium 133 with 48meg running Win95. I should have upgraded long ago, but it's more trouble than it's worth to continually risk having to rebuild your system, and have favorite applications stop working. I beat the upgrade thing by buying a 1.2 GIG MOBO/processor unit, HD and new case then installed Win98SE/2000. So, I got power, more storage (40GIG HDD-$100) on paltforms I'm completely satified with. For ~MY~ purposes only, staying with plain vanilla Windows 98 serves my purposes. And like you, ther's no way I spring nearly $300 for dubious software upgrades. drive that I can usually get things done in virtual memory. I don't know if you run partitioned drive(s). I do. OS on C, everthing else (apps) on whatever partition that work is suited for. So not only is my machine running clean, the C drive is never busy or overworked, except of course when handling system files and shortcuts. Microsoft gets no Kudos form me for any of their practices. But they/AOL/Intel catch it from inept new (and old) owners. As with automobiles, failing to read the manual or keepiong up a recommended maintenance program, can and frequently does, void your warrantee (with automobiles). The same might be done with computers: fail to follow the manufacturers recommendations, use out-of-date software, fail to pull preventive maintenance and you're toast. Mafud writes: Hello Dave. Re: Enlarging Lenses
I just looked at some contact sheets looking for falloff, and found that one side is slightly lighter than the other. I usually print contacts at f/8, so I am thinking that this is an issue with condensers and bulb. I've noticed that when I've changed the bulb or fiddled with the condensers, that coverage can be messed up. Looks like it is again. I'm using an Omega B-600. Thanks for your comments. William in Utah. Ed wrote: Mine's about 8-10 years old. I bought it new, and it has the lighted aperture ring. Sharpness is really, really good. It's just the light falloff that's a problem. With the cold light tube that snakes all around, and the diffuser under that, it looks very even at the source. Of course, it's also possible that the light just passing through the enlarger opening causes some diffraction at the edges which reduces the light to the corners. I recently adjust the bellows to the lowest position (for med format neg - since it makes no difference with the cold light). That moved the light source closer to the film and seems to have helped quite a bit. So maybe the problem is not the lens at all, but the design of the 23CII. Overall, the problem was it it's worst with the condensers, and got better with cold light, and now is better still with the bellows collapsed. Re:billpoint paypal
Billpoint will transfer each payment to your bank account, though it won't happen instantaneously, it will take at least two business days (so no weekends). You should see from your transaction history when it is transferred. (look under deposits) With Paypal, the money stays in your paypal account, a bit like a piggy bank. You can use that money to spend with any purchases made through paypal. You can have it transferred to your own bank account, but you have to request it online. Pentax Optio Digital Camera - FEH?
I met Juan Buhler in San Francisco today and we planned to do some shooting and to compare some lenses. The weather turned on us, and instead of making photographs we ended up in Gasser's camera shop looking for odds and ends and taking up the sales staff's time. Business was slow - very slow - so we got good service g. We looked at the Optio 410 - the 4 megapixel camera. I can't speak for Juan, but I was surprised at how small and compact it was, and how simple the controls seemed to be. It seems like a nice little camera for people who want to make little snap shots, and may be a nice alternative to a PS. However, Mike Johnston raved about the Optiio 310, and, based on what we saw with the 410, which has h higher number of pixels, these cameras are useless for prints about 8x10 or larger. We looked at a couple of 8½ x 11 prints and there was obvious pixilization (if that's the right word) in shadow areas and where light and darker areas met. For example, the line where an arm ran alongside a little girl's dress was jagged and of a darker color than the areas on ether side of the line. Now these were prints made specifically to show off the qualities of these cameras, and they were terrible. If this is any example of normal quality from these cameras, they're not ready for prime time yet. It'll be a l-o-n-g time before I give up my Pentaxes and Leicas for this kind of quality. I'd like to know how it is that someone like Mike can gush lavish praise over these cameras when the results I've seen are so poor? Is there a way to get better quality from them, or is 8X10 about the limit that they'll go? -- Shel Belinkoff mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. I'm becoming disillusioned with Sigma
After nearly 10 years of using Sigma lenses I'm actually becoming disillusioned. Here's the email they sent back... Dear Mr. Hufnagel, Thank you very much for your E-mail. First of all, we regret very much that our customer had such a trouble with the Sigma lens. We have no experience such issue before, therefore, in order to understand the origin of the problem and provide the required maintenance, we kindly ask you to return the lens to Sigma Corporation of America. Please attach a memo describing your lens trouble, your name, address and phone number. If your lens is under warranty, please attach a copy of sales receipt from Sigma dealer. The warranty period is one year from date of purchase. If it is not under warranty and we have to charge for repair, we will send a FREE estimate by mail. If you are not US resident, please contact Sigma distributor in your country. Kind Regards, SIGMA Corporation of America Service Department 15 Fleetwood Court Ronkonkoma, NY 11779 U.S.A. Tel: 631 585-1144 Fax: 631 585-1895 http://www.sigma-photo.com I don't know about you, but I don't buy the no experience such issue before line. I can't be the only one with display problems with Sigma lenses and Pentax bodies. I won't even go into the horrible english (translation??) And finally... Where's a contact name? This smells like a form letter... I HATE form letters for customer service. Has anyone here ever sent in a Sigma lens under these kinds of conditions? I really like my lenses. I am especially fond of the 14mm rectilinear and 15mm semi-fisheye lenses... They're fantastic. It's sort of like a beautiful woman with a scar on her face... Still beautiful, but dimished somehow. I hope this can be resolved. None of my lenses are under warranty... They're just too old. So I get the feeling I'll be shafted in the end. I'd try and replace them with Pentax glass, but unless I got a long lost rich uncle that just croaked it won't happen... Too damn poor now. Oh well... Off the soap box now. -- John - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. NEW EMAIL ADDRESS + back from web-only pdml
Hi all friends, I have changed my mail provider and created an account exlusively for use with PDML, so I can get back from the nomail option and receive and reply to pdml instantenously (well, as far instantenously as dial-up connection permits). For more than 6 months I have been on the nomail list option because my mail account couldn't handle the 200 mails/day flame wars etc ;-) I am looking forward to be able to read and respond without so much lag - the web archive of PDML was in a big mess so far, the DATE index lagging about a month behind (sic!), and the THREAD archive is about 5-7 days behind at times. My former email is [EMAIL PROTECTED], which is no longer reliable so I switched. You can still send personal mails to it, though. List only address is now SONNAR, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (you can see I love old lens designs, sonnar is still very capable lens type). I will post a message from there shortly. Thanks! Frantisek Vlcek P.S.: after about 2 years on PDML from which the last half year was through web only I missed direct participation all those 6 months. Replying to thread which is 3 - 5 days old and waiting for your reply and subsequent messages take another 3-5 days to be visible is not nice. But the mail-archive is great, nevertheless... Re: Windows XP - Scary! (Was=3 A OT: A computer question...)
Disk Mangler is what Dell used to prepare and format the drive. They didn't include the program in the deal. I guess I'll have to contact the OnTrack folks and see what they say about removal. I'm not sure how I got rid of it years ago. Maybe FDISK / mbr can do the trick but I suspect I'll lose everything on the drive and will have to reinstall it all. May be able to Ghost everything to Zip disks and then Ghost it back when I've re-partitioned the drive. I think Cleansweep can move working programs to other disks, too. Then I can just move them back, maybe. But I'm not sure whether it will get the registry entries right. I hate mucking through the registry by hand. Maybe a good web and usenet search on removing disk manager will yield some enlightenment. Well, this is probably too much on this OT subject already. Cleaning/oiling shutter mechanism
-- [ From: Signature Sound * EMC.Ver #2.5.02 ] -- Hello all, I have a Pentax ME Super. I know it is not the most revered Pentax but it is probably my oldest possession at around 22 years of age, and it has been all over the world with me, so I am rather fond of it. It has been astoundingly reliable and this despite never having any kind of preventative maintenance or servicing. However, I believe that the shutter mechanism is now in need of oiling. It seems to be over-exposing at the faster shutter speeds. Is this something I can do myself and if so, how and with what lubricant? If not, can anyone suggest a good camera repair company or individual somewhere close to New York City? Pentax say that they no longer support this model and none of their service centers will touch it, so if I can't do it myself, I need a talented independent. I don't want to trust this camera to someone who doesn't know what they are doing or just doesn't give a damn. Many thanks Francis. RE: Super Tak 50 1.4 Elemental difference
For what it's worth, The Asahi Pentax Guide (Oosten) says: The lens can be distinguished from its successor (Model II) by a small glass protrusion on the rear element and by its slightly greater weight. I think this would require a side-by-side comparison. Elsewhere, the same source says: Super Takumar 1:1.4 / 50mm [Model 1] Year of Mfg: 1964 - 1965 Elements/Groups: 8/7 Diaphragm: fully auto Angle of View: 46 deg. Minimum Aperture: 16 Minimum Focus: 0.45m Filter Size: 49mm Length: 37.5 mm Largest diameter: 59mm Weight: approx. 245 grams Product number: 358; 35800 (from 10 - '66) Number Produced: n/a Serial Number Range: n/a Changes include: diaphragm ring with fine or coarse knurls; round or oval lettering. [Model II] (only differences listed) Year of Mfg: 1965 - 1971 Elements/Groups: 7/6 Weight: approx. 230 grams. Product Number: 378; 37800 (from 10 - '66); 37801 (white dot f/2, from 11 - '66) 37802 (from 4 - '69) Changes include: A/M lever, Auto/Man lever, small internal mechanical changes and white dot f/2. The only things (without taking it apart) that will set them apart for sure are: The product number on the back of the Auto/Man switch, and the weight. The protrusion of rear glass would be easier to assess with both types of lenses to hand. ppro -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Steve Larson Sent: Saturday, November 10, 2001 8:46 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Super Tak 50 1.4 Elemental difference Hi Todd, I think you`re right, the one I have has a yellow-golden tint and is smaller in length and barrel diameter than the SMC Takumar 50 1.4, which means that if it had the extra element it would be longer in length, or at least as long as the SMC Tak. RE: Enlarging Lenses
Mine's about 8-10 years old. Re: Enlarging Lenses
Hi Ed ... I've a 23CII as well with the Dichro head. Could you please explain this adjustment you've made to the bellows? I use a 50/2.8 APO Rodagon and have not noticed any light fall off with that lens, nor with the 80mm Componon-S. I bought the enlarger used and it's clear that the previous owner used 2¼ negs, based on the negative carriers and the lens that came with the enlarger. So it's possible that he'd made this adjustment to the bellows. I'd like to know how to tell if the adjustment was made and to learn how to do it. Thanks! Ed wrote: Mine's about 8-10 years old. I subscribe to an on-line newsletter and thought that the comments made below might make for an interesting discussion. Shel Belinkoff mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Original Message Subject: Newsletter 40 Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 11:10:06 +0100 Newsletter 40 In my recent test of the Contax N1 I noted the current trend of camera manufacturers (analogue and especially digital) to emulate the car industry in the method of component assembly. We all know that in the car industry there is a global sharing of major parts and that car manufacturers are becoming more and more keen buyers of components, smart assembly and even smarter brand marketing. A jaguar shares many parts with Ford, in A RollsRoyce a BMW engine purrs, in a Volvo we find Volkswagen diesels and if you buy a Mazda how much Ford is in there. The new engine in the Mini Cooper is a joint production of BMW and Ford, etc. We as consumers know this, accept it and are being informed by the companies about these details. But in the photo industry there is much secrecy, while the trend is the same. The shutter in the G2 and the Hexar RF are the same, almost all shutters of the type from 30 seconds to 1/8000 are identical and we find this one in a Sigma SA-9, the Contax N1 and many others. The Af mechanism, the metering system, and more components are shared or even bought from the same manufacturer in Malaysia or Korea. The most blatant example of sharing is the case of the 4 megapixel cameras that share the same lens under the name of Zeiss and Canon. Again, this is no secret, and no problem. But when asked to make a comment, the official Zeiss quote is: Zeiss shares in Japan the same production line with Canon and builds collectively the identical lens! Now what? Is the Canon lens a Zeiss design or the other way around? Or is it a Canon design, that happens to be admired by Zeiss, or is it just a marketing act. The user buys the Sony with the Zeiss branded lens, which is a Canon design and production. Again, no problem: I admire Canon lenses and if Leica would no longer be available, I would be happy to go Canon. My point is that the consumer has a right to be informed correctly. If the lens in question is a Canon lens, that just gets a Zeiss front ring, we are entitled to be told this. Just as the new Leica 2,8/15mm is a full-blown Schneider lens. We know it and Leica does not hide it. The new lens that came with the N1 (the vario-sonnar) is evasively designated by Zeiss as being built according to Zeiss quality parameters, but it does not state that it is a Zeiss design, built in Japan. No it is a lens built in Japan, that gets the Zeiss approval. If we also remember that in digital cameras the same chips are being used, we see that many digital cameras are internally identical, but branded differently. Like computers they are smart assemblies of widely shared components. It may be a short time and we can forget about any individualism in technique and approach in cameras, and can we buy whatever is cheapest and most advanced in specs as we do now with computers. A sad thought, but the camera industry is heading for a car/computer consumer product and no longer for a strong design with individual engineering as in the better segments of audio and some cameras, like the M6. Re: Windows XP - Scary! (Was=3 A OT: A computer question...)
Actually Mafud, I think Microsoft IS partly to blame. The fact is most people that have a computer don't have it because they're computer buffs. They have it because it's a tool that let 's accomplish a task. They have know desire to be computer geeks. Microsoft of course advertises to sell to the biggest audience. Expectations by consumers is that when they buy something it should work. When Win95 came out I believed the box said 'requires a minimum of 8meg of RAM and some pre-Pentium processor'. We all know that would be a joke, but Microsoft maximized sales that way. I run Photoshop 4.0 right now on Pentium 133 with 48meg running Win95. I should have upgraded long ago, but it's more trouble than it's worth to continually risk having to rebuild your system, and have favorite applications stop working. Yes I find it slow, at least I have enough hard drive that I can usually get things done in virtual memory. The other day though I inadvertendently started scanning pictures to my H:/ drive which is the drive Windows wants. You should see it when you try to open a 20mb file and have about 650K of swap space left. That of course was my fault. Tom Mafud writes: Hello Dave. Both Me (ME) and XP ~demand~ updated software and ~regular~ maintenance. Me simply would not tolerate my old Norton Utilities/AntiVirus. I bought and installed Norton SystemWorks2001 and no problems. Whereas you and me might tolerate fools and charlatans, (especially if they are our relatives or friends), neither Me or XP can tolerate dirty operating environments, particularly if there are old clunky programs loaded in a multitasking environment. Though Microsoft does design for and anticipate owners operating old (Windows98) computers in a dirty environment, not even Microsoft can be called to fault for the millions of underpowered (processor and memorywise) Windows95(a) and before clunkers people try to operate under conditions ripe for failure. **A computer designed with Windows95(a) architecture (or before), is simply out of its depths with Me or XP. Again, too many try running resources intensive applications on underpowered machines. ***Worse, we've all read posts from persons who own a Pentium 100/133 computer with 32 Max RAM, complaining about why his Windows (any) is running slow. RE: Enlarging Lenses
I remember I had light falloff on my Meopta enlarger. It disappeared when I removed the filter tray. That wasn't needed anyway with the colour head. Frits Wüthrich Ed wrote: Mine's about 8-10 years old. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. A Nice Thing Happened
I wanted to tell you this story. I hope it doesn't sound like bragging, but it was exciting. Tuesday afternoon, when I walked into my film lab to get the aurora shots, nobody was at the counter. I just sat down and a minute later I heard from the adjacent room Ken's in the back mounting three rolls of slides loaded with fabulous shots of the aurora. So I got up and started waving through the window and pointing at myself.Ken brought them out and all the employees were gathered around the light board at the counter. One of the employees said Ken, give the customer his slides and let him look at them first. Unbeknownst to me, one of the guys that works at the lab, Bob, is the astronomer at the Bruneau Dunes Observatory. He gave me free passes. When he saw the web site I put up, he e-mailed and asked permission to use the photos in his State Parks program at the observatory. So last night I was able to attend the first 45 minute program where the photos were projected on the slightly curved wall of the educational center, about 25 feet across. There were two programs, each with an audience of about 50 people. I was able to make a few brief comments at the first one. Afterwards, the Parks guy and Bob suggested that I could be a volunteer next year at the observatory. Bob, who is a pretty accomplished astrophotographer, from what I can tell, offered to make available to me, several items I had expressed an interest in, namely a solar filter for getting sunspot photos and a motorized tracking mount to use for the upcoming Leonid meteor shower. I got to look through a number of nice scopes too, including the 25 diameter big scope at the observatory. That's it. It was a great experience. Took 4 seconds on my 75mhz, 24MB of ram HP, Windows 95 running HP. My computer, 450mhz, 128mb, Windows 95 took about 1 second. Re: Enlarging Lenses
Ed wrote, in part: -- by light falloff you mean that the light is more intense at the center than the edges, correct?? What causes that and how do you correct for it? As mentioned already by Shel, yes this appears as a hot spot in the center and less light at the corners. Of course, in enlarging a negative, it leads to a darker area in the center. I'm not sure what design flaw causes it (but I'm sure some lens guru on this list sure does). In normal printing, where there is usually a wide range of tones and some burning and dodging takes place anyway, it's not usually much of a problem. Where I really see it most in in my contact sheets. I've heard of ND grad filters that are darkest in the middle and fade out to the edges that counterbalance light falloff. I don't think I'm ever going go buy one, though. -Lon - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Re: Cleaning/oiling shutter mechanism
Signature Sound [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have a Pentax ME Super. I know it is not the most revered Pentax Far from the least revered, though. Great little camera! However, I believe that the shutter mechanism is now in need of oiling. It seems to be over-exposing at the faster shutter speeds. Yikes! Oiling is the *last* thing that you should do to a shutter! Gives the same effect as oil on lens diaphragm blades: Makes it stick. Is this something I can do myself and if so, how and with what lubricant? Nope. Shutter probably needs adjustment. A regular CLA (Cleaning, Lubrication - of the camera as a whole, not the shutter! - and Adjustment) should take care of it. Re: Newsletter 40
Shel, As noted in the newsletter you quoted, many of the components in digital cameras by various manufacturers are the same. I think the Canon G1 G2, several Sonys including the S-75, and Olympus like the C3040, and an Epson all share the same f2.0 Zeiss zoom lens in their 3.1+ megapixel digital cameras. The chips are probably the same too. So about all that is different is the software, display screen, and physical case called the camera body. It means there isn't much to pick from on the 3.1+ megapixel cameras. Everybody's picture quality should be very similar. My suprise is at how many of these $600+ digital cameras are loaded into the stores for Christmas. Wow! Regards, Bob S. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: T400CN Discontinued?? I don't think so...
Anyone have any definative words on this being discontinued? I just checked with my Kodak rep, and he confirmed that T400CN has been discontinued. Apparently BW+ (amateur, 24 exp.) and Portra 400BW (pro, 36 exp.) are very, very similar emulsions; T400CN was different from both of them. chris OK, now this is really wierd, the local rep at the shop I frequent called Kodak to ask them this question, and they denied it - they say that the T400CN is still in full production with the BW Select being the consumer film and the Portra BW being the professional film that are designed to print on color paper, and the T400CN being their C-41 film that is designed for printing on BW Paper.
