Re: 105mm Nikon enlarging lens

2002-01-20 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Paul ...

Some 105/5.6 Nikkors are considered to be of top optical quality,
notably the 105/5.6N and the APO 105/5.6. However, the
"run-of-the-mill" Nikkor 105 does not receive highest marks. Also, of
all the better lenses in the 105 focal length, the Nikkor does not, as
far as I can determine, offer ½-stop clicks, which may make precise and
repeatable exposures somewhat of a problem. IAC, you might want to ask
the seller exactly which model lens is offered, and verify if, should it
be a newer model, it has ½-stop clicks. Frankly, it would not be my
first choice in enlarging lenses. However, if you're going to test
various samples, then you're on the right track.

As has been mentioned before

Bob,

You guessed right, the grip is an 'option.' You're
choices are this, get a grip (I know there's one
available on www.keh.com), or get yourself a Winder ME
or Winder MEII and use that instead of a grip . . .

. . . for my money, I'd just get the MEII winder
and use that, but then, I have big hands . . .

Bob:

The grip on the Program Plus (Program A) came with the camera body
as standard equipment when bought new. (It was the same grip as
used on the Super Program (Super A.)

It has to be removed to attach a winder, and so it may end up being
misplaced before the body is resold.

A few sellers on eBay have been known to sell the body and the grip
separately, and a few more sellers may offer it for auction
presumably when one finally turns after being misplaced for a while.
That might be your best chance of getting one.

I believe each model was made of the same material. For instance, all
A50/1.7 were made of plastic, not just the aperture ring.

Aaron,
Those look good. An ideal out of focus highlight would be a very even disk,
with no bright core and no bright ring. Although your lens has a very slight
bright ring effect, it's not bad and otherwise the disk is very even. Should
be a fine lens bokeh-wise.

I'd really need to see some more conventional oof areas to tell much else.

Hi Paul ... Thanks for your suggestion. I'm still playing around with
color schemes and backgrounds. I want something that easily connotes B&W

Anyway, this was just a test to see if I could find a way to get a
unique type into a logo that would be seen the same way by everybody.
The logo is a GIF converted from an HTML coded file.

Meet "Summicron"

2002-01-20 Thread Mike Johnston

PDML Friends,
I wonder if I could introduce you to my buddy Bob Meier, the author of the
following note--Bob is also "Summicron" who was discussed briefly a few days
ago (and who managed to snag that minty 35/2 S.-M.-C.-Takumar for $90, BTW).

Apart from being a sometime Pentaxian and as bad a CAS (Camera Acquisition
Syndrome) sufferer as any of us, Bob also runs a very good B&W custom lab
out of Minneapolis. WHATEVER YOU DO, please don't tell him that his prices
are ridiculously low for custom handwork; we wouldn't want to have him go
raise prices on us.

I don't think Bob quite qualifies as a curmudgeon yet, but, now that he's
here, we can work on him.

Re: Please Check This Out

2002-01-20 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Hi,

I'm trying to keep it legible and easy to read. The font is derived
from a document typed for a "typographic conference" in Mainz, Germany,
in 1966, so it's authentic. I do have another type face that's more
along the lines you describe, but it's not as legible, and detracts from
the message. That font, Halda, was taken from a document typed by an old
Halda typewriter.

Not necessarily, the new Oly E-20 (5MP) is reported to have more noise than the
old E-10 (4MP), the sensor is the same size, the pixels are more densely
packed, lens aberrations become enhanced, noise goes up and hence dynamic range
is lost.

Re:Spotmatic's Screens

2002-01-20 Thread robertmeier

Does anyone know if it's feasible to replace the screen in a Spotmatic F
with a more recent screen, say, one made for the LX? A brighter sreen would
mean that the light meter would have to be adjusted as well. Is there
anyone who does this work?

RE: The new LX Grips

2002-01-20 Thread Matamoros, Cesar A.

Rob,

Coool! It looks comfortable, which is what is important. I am
trying to imagine what it would look on my snake skin LXs. It really sticks
out on a regular LX. What a great idea.

Since you want feedback, the only thing I find out of sorts is the
way it obviously sticks out from the body. But looking at the regular grip
from all angles I can see the way it stands off from the body. I am curious
how much bigger it is than a regular grip. I am used to the normal grip and
wonder how much different it would feel, in size that is. The feeling of
wood should be great!

Great job, what would be the availability...

I was in a similar state insurance wise until I got my 600/4.0, then I got coverage
for replacement value & away from home. There is still one warning though, the
insurance will only cover up to $1500 for damages or loss of equipment while it is in
a car. The insurance rep said that the reason for such a low coverage for equipment
in a car is because theft from cars is so high. The equipment is fully covered if I
damage it while hiking in the mountains, if it falls of a tripod, I drop it, or if the
house burns, but not if it is in a car, not even if I am in the car at the same time
of damage or loss.

I got into a lengthy discussion with the insurance rep over the issue of loss or
damage of equipment while it is in a car & they are very rigid about that point.
Coverage is to the maximum of 1500 even if it is damaged in a motor vehicle accident
while I am in the car or if someone steals it from my car while I am in it trying to
fight them off.

I would like to know if insurance companies other PMDLers use (especially Canadians)
give better coverage to equipment while it is in a car.

Crank-Loading problem ME Super

2002-01-20 Thread Denny B

I cannot load film into my ME Super, I can crank the lever
but the exposure indicator does not advance and the shutter does
not set.
Also with the film in, if you try to crank the shutter and advance the film
you
can feel the tension is not right to pull the film forward and set the
shutter.
You know it is just the crank lever moving.

The shutter release button pushes right down and does not release
the shutter because it does not set.
I removed the film and with the back open when you crank
the mechanism you can see the shutter does not set, no
matter what speed you set it to.
So simply put the mechanism is not loading the film or setting the shutter.

Is there somebody in the group who can lead me in a direction to
solve this problem.
I am the original owner and the camera has worked up to now.

thanks in advance

Lens Test Results

2002-01-20 Thread Ken Archer

I ran three rolls of film through my cameras this morning to check
three lens and some longer lens hoods. I tried a 105/2.8 Super Tak, a
135/3.5M and a 200/4 SMC Tak. The first thing I learned is that my
SPII needs to go in for a cla before Spring gets here. My ME Super is
ready for another year.

I tried the hood for a 200/5.6 Tak on the 135/3.5M (I hate that short
builtin hood) and, although it is almost as long as the lens, there was
no vignetting in the corners. There was significant light falloff in
the corners wide open at f:3.5 with and without the hood.

I used the Tak 3.5/135_4/150_5.6/200 hood on the 105.28 Tak. There was
noticable light falloff at f:4 and significantly more at wide open
f:2.8 on shots taken with and without the hood. However, the thing
that has me concerned is that one corner of the frame has much more
falloff that the other three. Does anyone have an explanation?

Also, how many people on this list test their film, lenses and cameras,
before they use them for a serious project?

Wildlife photographer of the year 2001

2002-01-20 Thread Frits J. Wüthrich

I visited this exhibition today in Gloucester. Very inspiring, as well as
giving me a feeling I have a lot to improve. Like looking at the beautiful
picture of a mushroom in the youth category, a 12 year old boy.

A few observations:
95% was done using either C***n or N***n, one Hasselblad, one Linhof, two
Dynax 9, one Fuji, and one each of the following Pentax: 645, 645N, 67 and
67II. Two of these Pentax were winners in their category.
About 50% was done using a 500mm lens.
Only two frames were done on Kodak, all others were on different types of
Fuji film!

If you have a change to see this exhibition somewhere, go and see it.

Hi, Malcolm,

I hear what you're saying, but it's not necessarily so. This may not be the
best analogy, but, I've ridden bicycles my whole life, from the time I
learned
to ride a "two-wheeler" when I was three. I LOVE riding bikes.

What have I been for the last five years? A bike messenger. What do I
enjoy
doing on weekends (when the weather's good)? Getting on my bike (often with
some amount of camera gear in tow), and going for a nice ride.

Just 'cause you do it for a living doesn't mean that you can't still enjoy
doing
it in your spare time, even if you may not particularly enjoy the type of
photography that you may find that you have to do professionally.

frank

Hi Aaron,

I feel the same. When I first got interested in photography and discovered
I both enjoyed it and, IMO, had a knack for it, I started dreaming of being
a professional photographer.

Now I've come to realize that if it was my sole means of making a living,
the fun would be gone and it would be like most other professions. Fun and
exciting at first, followed by periods of satisfaction, followed by periods
of realizing that this can get pretty boring, followed by periods of
acceptance that this really boring, followed by periods of the only reason
I'm doing this anymore is for the money.

The one exception to the this might be if travel and landscape photography
was the only thing I did. Shooting what somebody else wants, wouldn't
thrill me.

It's nice to go out and shoot, knowing that supper on the table doesn't
depend on the results.

Q: Winder ME II

2002-01-20 Thread Matti Etelapera

Hi,

I have a question about the Winder ME II, which I seldomly use with my
Super A. The winder seems to lengthen the shutter delay of the camera and
I´m really not too happy about that.

AFAIK, after pressing the shutter release button on the winder the motor
starts winding and _after_ that the shutter is triggered mechanically.
Once the picture is taken the winder advances to the next frame. I find
the mechanical triggering of the shutter strange, because the motor
produces considerable amount of torque and vibrations to the body. If all
of this would have been made with electrical triggering, the vibration and
shutter delay wouldn´t have been a problem. Man I hate shutter delay :)

So the question goes: are these assumptions correct, or is there some kind
of a fault in the winder or the body?

New Fisheye

2002-01-20 Thread William Kane

Hey gang,

Got a Sigma 8 f/4 circular fisheye off of ebay recently. It's a very
interesting lens, which presents an entirely new way of looking at the
world to me. I've taken a couple of test shots, which I have to take in
to get process still. When I get them back, I'll scan and upload them
so the list can take a look.

EXCITED as always,
Illinois Bill

RE: Super Takumar 1:1.9/85mm

2002-01-20 Thread Paul M. Provencher

The 1.9/85mm Super Takumar may be the lowest priced of 85mm Takumars but it is an idea
choice for many types of portraiture. I
don't think you will regret buying the lens, and indeed, I think the differences
between this lens and the later versions can be
detected, they are not major enough to worry about. Sounds like the price is right!

wrt badly designed text colours - Opera the browser has a very handy
button on the toolbar with which you can easily switch between YOUR
colours (white on dark gray, for example) and SITE's colours (the
"artistic" white on dark white ). Good idea IMHO. If only Netscape
had it.

Would it surprise you to hear that this is true? K2DMD was frequently
used by secret services at the time. Also were Robot cameras (probably
for automated hotel room -behind the mirror- shots). Actually, the
K2DMD I bought in a pawnshop I later learned it must have belonged to the STB,
the communist secret police. Not a pleasing thought ;-(

Paul,

Great info! Do you have any idea if there are any behavioral
differences in these series? Like stop down metering, etc.

Thanks for your reply,

Re: MI6 use Pentax

2002-01-20 Thread frank theriault

Well, actually, the Canadian army went into Afghanistan without desert
camo, becuase we don't have any! All's we got is green stuff. Not many
deserts in Canada, I guess. Loads of forests, though.

Not that that's an excuse. We like to think of ourselves as peacekeepers,
so we should be ready to go anywhere in the world for that purpose. I
suppose that any defense funds that the military can squeeze out of the
government should really go towards stopping our helicopters from
plummeting from the sky (as they have a propensity to do, since they're
about as old as I am!).

Sigh

Amen to that. I always try to buy the best I can (within my budget)

Well at the time when the Bond Novels were written place Pentax in the U.S.
was distributed by Heiland/Honeywell. The CIA would use Pentax
because the Congress would stipulate that the American Agencies should
use "American" equipment.
