Cyril, I have this lens also, and have found it to be very free
of distortion. I also like the sharpness and contrast of the
lens, and find the build quality and "feel" of the lens to be
very pleasing.
What sort of distortion are you seeing with the lens?
My sample shows no barrel or pincushion distortion. It is one of
the straightest 24mm lenses I have seen.

Hello,

I use the A 24 f/2.8 and find it light and maniable. I like the contrast and
sharpness. I just dont like the distorstion which is quite sensitive,
especially for interior pictures.

Color with the 135-600 SMCT

2002-03-18 Thread J. C. O'Connell

Finally got around to shooting my first
roll of color with the 135-600 F6.7 SMCT today
at the beach. Only did B&W tests previously.

Body-Spotmatic
Film-Fuji Superia 400, rated 250
Exposure-1/500 @ f11
Support-monopod

Please Check out and "critique" a few of the pix:
(these arent super hi-res scans, but they're decent)

http://www.gate.net/~hifisapi/temp3s.jpg

http://www.gate.net/~hifisapi/temp4s.jpg

http://www.gate.net/~hifisapi/temp5s.jpg

Overall, this lens is very good for color.
Excellent contrast, sharpness, saturation.
The 135-600 zoom range is VERY useful indeed!
I am extremely pleased with this lens.
I like the fuji superia 400 film too.
Any better 400 speed color neg film out there?

Hmm, I had a K24/2.8 before getting the FA* lens. This lens is the
same optical formula as the SMC-A version. Very nice lens; sharp,
small and light weight.

Another one recently came up for sale at a good price and I almost
bought it... but decided that I don't use the FA* enough as it is ;)

6x7 wooden grip

2002-03-18 Thread David A. Mann

Hi all,

I had another new arrival today :) A wooden grip for my Pentax 6x7
which I had found selling secondhand at an online camera shop in
Auckland. Boy am I happy.

My advice to anyone considering a Pentax 67 is to get one that
already has a wooden grip attached. The grips are surprisingly
difficult to find on the used market, and the camera is a real pain
to carry around without one.

Thanks to those who kept an eye out for me (on ebay etc). Luckily
I've managed to avoid international shipping costs this time!

I might as well give it a go. I'll make yesterdays suggestion
"official".

 22mm f/2.9. Yes, a wide-angle prime.

I've got an unopened propack of expired (06/2000) 120 Kodak GPX
(160ASA, C-41, apparently a wedding film) that I'll probably never
use. 5 rolls in the pack. It's been stored in a fridge and should
still be OK. Just the stuff for practicing portraits with the medium
format gear.

If the winner doesn't have any medium format equipment I'll throw in
a roll of 35mm Reala (gee what a cheapskate). Either that or I'll
send the 120 anyway, then send Aaron to visit you ;)

The plastic shelving for the wet area, some 2x4 lumber to make a frame
to hold the shelving over the tub, some pieces of 1x6 for brackets to
hold the new counter top on which the enlargers sit securely to the
wall, the plywood for the counter top, and the materials for
constructing the print drying cabinet. It also includes the hose and
fixtures that's attached to the shower head which will run into the
print washer when I build that, and some odds and ends, like screws,
bolts, wire, and the clock. It does not include the darkroom equipment,
like the enlargers, safe light, trays, timers, etc.

The total cost for the two enlargers, the Saunders easel, and the three
enlarging lenses (50/2.8 El Nikor, 50/2.8 APO Rodenstock, and 80/4.0
Componon-S) was but $550.00. One enlarger, the easel, and the Nikor was

but $350.00, and the Rodenstock was $195.00.

Should be, but mine somehow a bit tight so I file one edge a bit. However,
Beattie screens are quite coarse and expensive for what they are (imo).
Their grid lines are rather thick. It even vignettes badly with some lenses.
You might wish to try the MZ/ZX-M screen instead (C74).

Not really, unless you need to go deeper than 16 feet or so. I like the
A-1. Pentax doesn't make a camera that can be used underwater, though
there are underwater housings that you can use with your Super Program.
There are some other underwater ones that go deeper that you can get, like
the Sealifes, or you could rent one while you're there.

Update on My Darkroom

2002-03-18 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Today I installed the new print dryer, making use of the space where the
commode sits. This allows something useful to fill the slot, and
affords badly needed additional counter space. It seems that just about
every available bit of space has been used now, and apart from some
shelves and some paint to finish up the counter tops and the print
dryer, and some black cloth behind and to the side of the enlargers, I
think everything is in its place.

Although I've not timed it, I believe just about everything can be
removed in about a half hour, and with another half hour or forty-five
minutes to replace the sink faucets and shower head, the bathroom can be
put back into service again.

The total cost for putting the darkroom together was less than about
$200.00. If I may toot my own horn a bit, I think I did a pretty good
job considering I'm not very good with tools, and the whole project came
together using just a hammer, a couple of screw drivers, a drill, and a
pair of vice grips. Not too bad for only 45 square feet of space.

Looking at doing some snorkelling again in June in Bermuda. Last time I took
a disposable underwater camera. Does Pentax make an underwater camera?
Looking for something inexpensive. Like the Canon Sure Shot A-1.

Any other suggestions?

Taking my old Super Program for "land" pictures.

Thanks,

Allen

Re: OT: Anyone use the Omega B-22 Enlarger?

2002-03-18 Thread Paul Stenquist

That's an easy one. Just go to http://www.classic-enlargers.com/
They have parts for all Omega enlargers. However I think the condensers are fairly
pricey. If the price is too high, check with me again. I suppose I could sell you
mine, although I thought maybe I should keep them in case I ever decide to go back
to the condensers.

Re: CRITIC WANTED!!!!!:was what are you shooting this weekend

2002-03-18 Thread Bolo

> I look back and want to kick myself in the head ( back lit shots what
> was I thinking!

I didn't think that was so bad ... I thought it had potential!

I'll preface this to note that I photograph railroad equipment, animals,
buildings and other non-people subjects most of the time; portraiture
isn't my strong suite ... I just dabble in it from time to time.

First, the clothing has too much contrast with her skin. Something
with a lighter color would help a lot, both top and bottom. There
isn't a lot of detail in the dark colors; I didn't even realize the
pants were _blue_ jeans until one of the later shots.

I thought that one of the back lit shots showed promise; lub9.
With the model backlit, the shadow problem that you see in many of
the sidelit photos is eliminated. The contrast *in* the subject is
lowered, which helps. You also get a touch of a hair-light, which
differentiates and adds texture to the hair. If you pose the model
to move the backlit light source *behind* the model's head you
would increase the hairlight-- while simultaneously reducing the
flare problem.

The flare has the effect of *softening* the photo, such as a soft-focus
filter would do; you may want to experiment with such a filter --
the effect seems to show potential.

lub9 also provides the start of an opportunity for a good background.
Eliminate the parking lot in the lower portion and use the model to
cover some of the background buildings. Leave the distinctive parts
of the skyline, such as the needle, in place to provide a silhouetted
"where" to the photo.

Another thing to try would be to shoot earlier or later in the day;
the low-lying sun will give you some of the warm or "gold" tone which
you were hoping for with your bounce.

If any of this is particularly stupid, please say so; as I said, I
only dabble in portraiture.

2002-03-18 Thread Joseph Tainter

P.S. On second glance I agree with Bill and Jerome. As the image came up
(top to bottom) I thought the flare was the subject. But if the
inscription is the subject, then the flare is a distraction. And
placement a bit off-center would help.

Alternatively, you could crop off the pedestal, and then the flare would
be the first focus of a viewer's eye. I would crop the left side, too.

I have an Omega B22. It's now equipped with a zone vi cold head, but I used it
with the condensers for many years. For 6x6 I used the two large condensers
with the curved sides facing each other and an 80mm lens. For 35mm, I added
the smaller supplemental condenser on top of the upper condenser and used a
50mm lens.

I've gathered a half-dozen prices from online dealers; as I recall, all are $150 to
$225. I'll sell the lens for perhaps $20. I suppose you mean I overpaid because it's
from an individual, with a no-return policy on top of that. Basically, I'm taking the
seller's word that he had a shop check it out last week and pronounce it in fine
shape. I had him confirm that the aperture window can be seen.

On EBay, a few XR-Ps have sold for less, most for more. Much depends on the bundle.

Hi, Bob,

It may be that Minox made a Leica sub-mini reproduction, but the ones I'm thinking
about are made
by a Japanese company called Sharan - I poked around today looking for something about
them:

http://www.subclub.org/shop/sharan.htm

There's not too much more, 'cause it seems that most of the pages are in Japanese.
Apparently
they're not exported out of Japan, so they're hard to find. Single shutter speed
(1/250),
variable aperture, I'm not sure if the lenses are fixed focus or not. Despite the
fact that some
of them are copies of slr's, they all actually have rangefinders.

They do use Minox film, though.

frank

OT: Anyone use the Omega B-22 Enlarger?

2002-03-18 Thread Delano Mireles

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone uses this enlarger and can tell me whether you use
both condensors for all printing or do you go to one when doing medium
format (645)? I've read different things on various internet sites and
thought I'd turn to the group for verification.

Thanks,

Re: My two weeks in TO

2002-03-18 Thread Pat White

Tom, a Lite-Tite is a Manfrotto accessory used to attach a flash and/or umbrella to a
lighting stand. It's in two pieces, with a through-bolt in the middle, so you can
adjust the angle of the flash and/or umbrella. The bottom piece has a 5/8" hole with
set-screw to match most lighting stands, but it may screw tight enough to stay on
those stands with thin top tubes. The top piece takes a Manfrotto 1/4" or 3/8"
adapter that you can thread into the tripod socket on the bottom of the 'off-camera
shoe F'.

You put your flash into the off-camera shoe, adjust the angle to suit, and plug the
other end of the cable into your camera's hotshoe (with hotshoe adapter FG). The
second flash is triggered cordlessly from the first flash, by infra-red signals.
Lite-Tites cost around $25 Cdn new, but I've seen them for much less at camera swaps.

Pick up a Manfrotto catalog sometime. They have an amazing number of convenient
lighting accessories. Right now I'm waiting for a set of casters for one of my
lighting stands. That'll be handier than lifting or dragging the stand around.

Pentax at the Photo Expo? How about a new lens mount....

2002-03-18 Thread Christopher Lillja

Hey - I love the idea of even more new limited lenses - but let me "go big" for a
moment

In addition to introducing the new 97 1.9 FA* IF AL, our friends at Asahi Optical have
something way-cool up their sleeves

Why mess around with the limitations of an old lens mount? Following rumors that
Olympus is introducing an entirely new digital camera system, Pentax will scrap plans
to introduce a digital Kmt body and introduce an entirely new digital SLR system. This
system will feature an entirely electronic, all-new lens mount.

Only a handful of high quality lenses will be available at first. The first and
"standard" lens being an F1.8-2.4 24-90 (35mm equiv.) DZ IF AL zoom. 15/2, 300/2 and
600 2.8 DZ* IF AL (all 35mm equiv.) lenses will be available within a few years. These
lenses will be approx. 2/3 the size and weight factor of similar 35mm lenses, or
smaller.

The camera will feature a 3.5mpX3 Foveon imager in a body form factor similar to an
90% scale MZS with up to a gigabyte of on-board storage and Firewire connectivity.
Because of the drastically lower computational overhead of the Foveon chip and large
buffer system, the "DZ" will capture 24, 36, or 48 bit color and deliver at least 5fps
for up to 20 frames in standard form. Tethered to a dedicated workstation (or using
Bluetooth wireless technology in an add-on grip), the dz will capture up to 30fps
until off-board storage is exhausted. Top shutter speed will be up to 1/6000
(mechanical) to 1/12000 electronic. Flash sync is available at all shutter speeds. The
Foveon sensor will be protected from dust by a user removable/cleanable optical flat
inside the camera body. Other grips (in addition to the wireless tether) will be
available to extend the cameras capabilities, or simply extend its size for those with
larger hands.

The DZ also features extended IR capabilities and "modeless" operation. (No switching
back and forth between recored and play modes.) Dozens of focus, exposure, and
metering modes will be available from full auto to full manual with many types of
"bracketing." With smaller, fast focusing standard "DZ" lenses, the new Pentax will
be one of the fastest and most directly reponsive digital cameras EVER.

With a back-focus of 25.4mm, the best part of this system will be its backward
comparability will ALL existing Pentax lenses. Using the proper electro-mechanical
adapters, all Pentax lenses from the M37 mount Asahi-Flex lenses, to the M42 Takumars,
to the most recent FA series autofocus will mount and give whatever full functionality
they are capable of. Additionally, since Pentax will licence the mount at a reasonable
cost to third party mfgrs., a wide range OEM and third party lenses will be mountable,
with various levels of functionality. The M39 Leica thread mount adapter will one of
the first available.

MSRP will be $2500 falling within a year or two to a street price of $899

just my happy thought for the day.

Regards,

Chris L.

Hi,

my family's from Yorkshire, and I lived and worked up there for a few
years. One of my colleagues, who was very, very Yorkshire once told me
the following story from his childhood. Those of you unfamiliar with
the Yorkshire accent, think "The Full Monty".

He was about 4 or 5 years old, and walking with his Dad. He climbed up
onto a high wall and walked along it to the end, where he wanted to
jump off.

"Will you catch me, Dad?"
"Course I will son, off you go"
"Are you sure, Dad"
"Aye, come on son. Jump off".

So he jumps off. His dad steps backwards and the lad lands heavily and
painfully, cutting and bruising himself.

"Now, let that be a lesson, son", his dad says. "Never trust nobody".

We have waited a good while for the new 18mm that was rumored a while

where I'll place my bet anyway:

One roll of Kodak E100VS in either 120 or 35mm says:
18mm f/2.1

That's a great idea! You need to make the focal length a prime number,
but you're on the right track. A lens with an aperture of pi would be

Re: Camera backpacks

2002-03-18 Thread Aaron Reynolds

I have the old-style LowePro MiniTrekker. This weekend, I had the 67
with the 75mm attached at the top and the ME Super on the winder ME II
with the A* 200mm f2.8 attached at the bottom, with the 67's 105mm,
helicoid extension tube and my Sekonic 308 down one side and three 67mm
filters in boxes and a goodly amount of film down the other side. Plus,
all my usual bits and pieces: spare batteries, cable release, lenspen,
sharpie, etc, in the inside pocket. I didn't take my laptop, but there
was still space in the outside pocket for it.

I don't think that you could fit 6 lenses in this pack and still have
space for film, but you could probably fit four or five, depending on
their size. I picked the MiniTrekker because it was tall enough to fit
the 67 with the prism attached.

2002-03-18 Thread Artur Ledóchowski

Hi,
Could you take a look and comment this photo: http://fototok.art.pl/photo.php?p=7081
The writings on the wall are important to the meaning of the photo and as they are in
Polish, Iet me translate them for you.
The sculptured woman is the personification of one of the (classic) Arts - Sculpture
and so the word "Rzezbiarstwo", carved below her feet, means exactly
"Sculpture". However, somebody painted on the plinth a slogan: "Your body is a
battlefield" and, as you'll probably find it out, the slogan was painted by some
member of a youth subculture...
The whole image struck me and I thought it had a symbolic meaning... But what do you
think of it? Is the symbol clear to the audience? Can you interpret it in your
own way? Or is it too muddled?
The equipment was: MZ-5n, SMC FA 28-105 f/4-5,6 Power Zoom, Kodak T400CN

I think it's in keeping with the "Limited" spirit that the maximum aperture
be an irrational number! (and perhaps the focal length should 141.42135623730950488

One Kodak disposable camera offered into the pot.

I'm certain that I've told the story before of a local aerial
photographer who dropped his 6x7 out of a plane while shooting,
resulting in a dented prism and a busted aperture coupling chain. It
landed in a cornfield, and he was flying low, but IT FELL OUT OF A PLANE
AND SURVIVED.

I'm in too: How about 117/1.8? I realize that puts it at a 67mm diameter
opening (okay, technically it's 65mm), but 117/2.0 @ 58mm is just too boring,
and 117/1.9 @ 62mm, well...Pentax doesn't make that filter size.

Oh, and I'll throw in a roll of slide film, either Provia, E100S or E100VS.
I'll have to check the freezer when I get home.

He took our friends out to several areas in 'old Markham'

Such a date fits better with the 2 year release cycle of the Limited
lenses. Anyhow, the next Limited lens is not far away and I'll bet it will
be shown this year.

Seems to be fine (I'm running at 1024x768 on a 17" Viewsonic).

Good to see another Canon GL QIII user :)

Cheers,

These pics on my website are coded to load as a percentage of window size.
In other words they get bigger as you browser window gets bigger. The
question is do they work at the res they are. I feel that they are the
maximum size jpegs that will load reasonably fast. Do the degrade too much
when displayed in bigger windows?

2002-03-18 Thread David Brooks

500 pictures of our equine friends leeping over large
obstacles.
The farm we board the horse(soon to be horses??)have
3 ponds, hundreds of pooping Canadian Geese, some ducks and
a pair of Trumpeter Swans(breeding yearly)The Swans do
not take kindly to the geese in mating season(ducks do not seem
to bother them)When they get to close its all out war and
in the 4 years we have been there its Swans 10 Geese 0.

I managed to get close enough to a Canadian Goose to knock off a
couple
of good frames today. They are fairly easy to get close to because
they
think people will feed them. While they are fun to photograph, most
Michiganders would appreciate it if they would return to Canada. They
are about the size of medium dogs, ditto their bowel movements. Not a
pleasant bird to have hanging around.

gathering thet Saturday and tried to listen to all
the tech talk going on at once.Just confused me
Made me realize just how much i 'thought i knew'
but did not and how much is still to learn.

Thanks

Dave

Just got back home to Victoria, after two weeks in Toronto.  Lots of
friends and relatives to look up, but still time to take some
pictures, and meet the Toronto PDML gang.  Thanks, Frank, for the
idea and organizing, and Aaron, for the film and posting the pix, and
to Jeff, Dave, and Brendan for the company.

They work fine in Opera. I'm running 1600x1200 and the pictures don't seem
to degrade at all.
