Re: mz6

2002-08-15 Thread Scott Nelson

Also check out the MZ-5n. It lacks multi exposure and 1/4000 shutter speed,
but it has better metering options, a glass penta-prism for a brighter
viewfinder and a bit tougher build (I can't verify that one, because I
don't have a MZ-6). The user interface is much different, with an old style
shutter speed dial. Try them both, and pick the one you like. The
differences are more a matter of style than function.

FS: NIB 17-20 fisheye zoom from retailer

2002-08-15 Thread Chris Brogden

The lens in question is the SMC Pentax-F 17-28mm f3.5-4.5 fisheye zoom.
Here's the situation... the store I work for, Don's Photo, ordered one of
these in for a customer who changed his mind about taking it. Now we have
to get rid of it, and Winnipeg is too small of a market to do that easily.
So, to a lucky PDML member, I can let it go for $430 US ($670 CAN), with
free shipping anywhere in Canada or the U.S. That's a better deal than
B&H, who wants $434.95 plus shipping.

The lens is new in the box and comes with the full two-year Canadian
warranty (one year international). If you have any warranty problems
whatsoever, you can always send it back to me and I'll take care of it
completely. The lens comes NIB with both caps and a soft pouch. I'll
also throw in a free pro-pack of either Kodak 160NC 35mm (5 rolls of 36
exp.) or Kodak 400NC 120 (5 rolls of 120), as well as a free Lowepro lens
cloth.

Because this is being sold by the store, not just myself, I won't be able
to accept personal cheques, but a credit card would be fine (as long as
we're shipping it to the address that the credit card is registered to).
A money order would be okay, too. Please let me know which payment type
you'd prefer.

If you have any questions, or want to buy it, please reply off-list.
I've bought and sold enough stuff with list members in the past four years
that I should have enough character references out there. :)

It's a fun lens, with moderate full-frame fisheye distortion at 17mm and
practically none by the time you get to 28mm. So c'mon... support your
local PDML geek! ;)

Thanks,

chris

150... 3.5?

About your variation, Stan, I would suggest to pick the 85/2 because
of filter size and too high a value for the 85/1.8 (if you drop it or
anything else...). 85/2 is 200-300 bucks, the 85/1.8 is double
that... Actually, the whole kit is rather expensive, as the 20 M
goes for 300-400$ and the 40/2.8 for 100-150$. And I am sure you
meant (in your dream) a 300/4*... that is still a comparatively
heavy lens that will outweights all the others... 825g/800g.

So what about the 20 M + 40 + 85/2 + 150/3.5 + T6-2X (for an
occasionnal 300/7)? A bit over 2 pounds, less than a kilo (940g)! 3
pounds with a small MZ body.

For my last outings, I found myself using 20/4 (M) + 40/2.8 + 85/2
and a LX. Everything fits in the small Lowe "Topload zoom 1". A
spare films on each side of the body's lens. In the top part, a
Minolta achromatic close-up lens (fits both 40 & 80 but I have to
test these combinations), a YG filter and/or polarizer, and a bubble
level.

A bubble level? With a wide-angle, if some water surface (a lake, a
river) is not level, the result will give the viewer a strange
unbalanced feeling. I put the level on, finalize what I want and
check the level. It is usually fine, but maybe 25% of the time I
have to correct it. The corrected photo might have to be recomposed
a bit. In fact it is usually quite easy to do it without a level,
but not always for some reason. Sometimes strong elements in the
picture seem to create a diversion.

I agree - the 40mm is a nice little lens, good in all respects except for a
bit of a fiddle to focus without planting a large fingerprint on the lens
surface.

A nice slightly odd-ball kit I have tried is 24/2.8, 30/2.8, 40/2.8, 50/2.8
macro, 85/1.8. Add a 1.4x or a 2x converter and you have most contingencies
covered. Substitute a 50/1.4 and a couple of extension rings for the 50/2.8
macro and you have given yourself a bit more dim-light capability.

Note that all of the lenses I have mentioned are small and reasonably light.
To carry them more easily, I have epoxied several pairs of rear lens caps
back to back. A 30mm + 85mm takes up less room in a camera bag or jacket
pocket than a 28-105.

A variation which intrigues me would be 20/4, 40/2.8, 85/1.8, 150/2.8,
300/4.0. Obviously not a light travel kit but not too bad if you stop at 135
or 150.

RE: mz6

2002-08-15 Thread Galen S Swint

Dear Paul,
I have a ZX-L, the US version of the MZ-6, and I really like it. As to my
opinion, some caveats: this is my first AF camera, and I would rate myself
as maybe "advanced beginner" :-). My first 35mm SLR was a P30t.

I purchased mine for $379 US from JandR.com camera (they did price
matching to get that price for me) for the 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 kit plus a
4-year warranty.

I like the autofocus - it is fast, but it could be faster. The AF noise is
not significant to me, but trying out my fiancee's uncle's camera (EOS
Rebel 2000), it is a lot noisier. (There was some buzz about Pentax coming
out with a USM-like system for their lenses, but I didn't really catch
that thread here.)

I generally find metering to be very good. Even in hard-to-meter
situations. I find the AF to generally be very good. Occasionally, the AF
has trouble finding lines to focus on. Generally, I can choose a nearby
spot for focus and use that (press the shutter half-way to focus,
recompose, and shoot)

On camera flash is generally OK, just bear in mind you will want a larger
flash to go with the camera. I currently use a Sunpak Auto144PC (GN66 @
ISO100), which is really a little weak to shoot with the 3.5-5.6 lens,
IMO. I'd sure like to get the AF-360FGZ and try out the advanced flash
system Pentax has put on the camera. It supports wireless TTL flash.

The camera has several "modes" for choosing time/aperture values. These
generally work ok. If I go with some program, I generally choose "auto" or
"action". Auto turns the camera into a glorified P&S, but seems to choose
appropriately more than 90% of the time.

I have also tried out my 50mm f/2 SMC-A lens, and it work just fine. The
ZX-L has focus assist, which helps my eyes (they ain't the greatest, but
they get the job done).

Comparing to the P30t, I like almost everything better, just miss the
split-image focusing area (which is really nice for manual focus). OTOH, I
find the viewfinder image of the ZX-L to be brighter than the P30t.

I have some photos online, if you would like to look, from my fiancee's
brother's wedding. Photos not attributed to Doris or Shirley were taken by
me. July 5-6 I shot Fuji 400 and Fuji 200 film and used the auto mode and
on camera flash. July 27 I shot Fuji NPS (first roll) and Fuji NPH (second
roll) with the Sunpak flash and metered manual mode. All pics with the
28-80 lens: http://golux.resnet.gatech.edu/~Henry_and_Katie/

(For those interested, Shirley's pics are from a Canon Powershot G2,
Doris's from a Canon(?) P&S and from a Kodak digital camera). I shot some
slides. The best of those are here:
http://golux.resnet.gatech.edu/~zorn/photog/amicalolaFalls/thumbdex.html
http://golux.resnet.gatech.edu/~zorn/photog/gatechNight/thumbdex.html
Those were generally shot shutter-priority and I used on camera metering
also. The slides look MUCH better than these scans (I haven't had time to
go re-balance them all color-wise). Those are all on Kodak Elite Chrome
100. (You can see the rest of that roll from
http://golux.resnet.gatech.edu/~zorn/photog)

Would I recommend you buy this camera? Yes.
Would I recommed the kit? Maybe - look into a ZX-L body plus the 28-105
lens about which I have been reading good things on this list recently.

Hope this is useful to all!
Galen

Hi Grant - and welcome to the list.
I find that with the AF330FTZ, it will not auto-zoom with my FA*28-105
unless I have the lens set to the power zoom mode when I turn the flash

Maybe this will help with that problem: can't help with the
non-synching issue, other than suggesting cleaning contacts.

RE: Very OT: Glass Plate Negatives

2002-08-15 Thread John Coyle

Hi Bill:
The suggestion received to scan them on a flat-bed and then reverse the
image in Photoshop should work well, but you must make sure you scan
the plate emulsion side down, to avoid the possibility of diffraction
effects through the glass, and to maximise sharpness. You will also
need to watch out for Newton's Rings where the glass contacts the
scanner's pressure plate.

Takes me back a bit - my first exposure to photography, outside family
snaps, was making photomicrographs of hydraulic joint sections for the
prototype of the Hawker Harrier, still in service with the RAF and the
US Marine Corps. We did these using carbon arc light sources on 5x7
(or maybe 6x8) glass plates, developed by inspection in trays, then
contact printed for filing.

Stan,

I shipped the second batch of posters last July 31st. They shoud have
arrived by now, but I believe that since many Italian post clerks and
postmen are on holiday during the first two weeks of August, some deliveries
were delayed.
Now I'm going on vacation for two weeks, so I'll unsubscribe to PDML. I'll
be back at the end of the month, hoping to read that everything went well.

Re: 6x7 PH SB 67 hood, can be used with filters?

2002-08-15 Thread Cotty

>Hi, brothers

I'm not a member of the brotherhood; I use my PH-SB on my 85mm...

>Just a quick question:
>The PHSB67 hood, is bayonet, screw-on or what?

Or what. Actually, a clamp-on type, with two sprung 'buttons' top and
bottom that actuate on a pair of arced grips - these attach onto the
filter threads of the lens. Hence filters can be used as normal. You
simply clamp the hood directly onto the filter instead of the lens.

>I'm asking because I found one in a store here (wasn't able to take a
>close-up look, the store was closed) and I want to know if this hood is
>worth having.

Buy it. They are excellent quality and do the job well.

>Also, I would like to know the exact depth of it, to search for possible
>screw-on cheaper alternatives.

Be aware that there are different sizes of PH-SB and PH-SA hoods. The
PH-SA is longer in hood depth, the PH-SB shorter. My PH-SA is 47mm from
front to back. The diamter is 67mm (filter size). There are other
(filter-size) diameters of PH-SA and SB hoods. I'm not sure what sizes
are available, a real brother perhaps will enlighten us.

The "newer" comments say "I don't know why this lens is said to be a
so-so performer, etc..." There must have been one "so-so" comment
that have gone a long way. It is a fine lens for most purposes. As
all Tessar formula, you have to stop down a bit to get sharp corners.
This lens is SO small. Not easy to handle especially if you have big
hands. Personnaly, I would keep the 50mm. You're not climbing high
mountains...

I had one. Personally, I don't like this lens too much for the fact that
it's focus ring is too thin. Never managed to grip the focus ring fast
enough without actually looked at it first. Compared to 50/1.4/1.7/2,
compact size is the only selling point imho. On the other hand, the FA43/1.9
is a joy to use.

Hah! Thrusting a mic up his full-frame chip more likely!

Unfortunately I won't be attending as I'd rather spend the money on

Watching anxiously though for any pre-Photokina news leaks or press

FS: Pentax & K - Mount Gear

2002-08-15 Thread pdml

I'm breaking up my kit and selling off part of it. ( Been out of
work way too long and the odd job along isn't making ends meet. )

So, here is my list:

Pentax ME SE in Excellent condition, fully functional with negligible
wear. This is the Exact ME SE depicted on Boz's Site. I'm selling
the camera without a lens, but including an original Pentax ME case
and body cap.

ME SE W/ CASE $120 + SHIPPING BY BUYERS CHOICE

Samigon Auto Winder for the ME. This is a new item that I have only
used to test on the ME SE.

SAMIGON AUTO WINDER FOR ME $40 + SHIPPING BY BUYERS CHOICE

Pentax K-1000 in Excellent condition, fully functional with
negligible wear. I bought this camera two years ago at a local Wal-
Mart ( Discount House ), it was new-old stock. It's the classic
workhorse. I have an original Pentax case in good condition that I
am including with it.

K1000 W/ CASE $90 + SHIPPING BY BUYERS CHOICE

Ricoh 50mm f1.4 lens in Excellent condition. Glass is clean & clear,
f-stops are snappy, no flaws in the coatings. This is an excellent
lens for all round shooting, especially where you may be uneasy using
your Pentax glass. Includes front & rear caps.

RICOH RIKENON 50MM F1.4 $25 + SHIPPING BY BUYERS CHOICE

Ricoh 135mm f2.8 lens in Very Good condition. Glass is clean &
clear, f-stops are snappy, no flaws in the coatings. This is an
excellent lens for telephoto use, again especially under conditions
where you may be uneasy using your Pentax glass. Includes front &
rear caps.

RICOH RIKENON 135MM F2.8 $25 + SHIPPING BY BUYERS CHOICE

Kiron 70-210mm f4.5 zoom lens, in Excellent condition. This is a
nice sharp lens, with Kiron's high build quality. I have the matched
1.5X multiplier that I'm including with it.

KIRON 70-210MM F4.5 ZOOM $90 + SHIPPING BY BUYERS CHOICE

Osawa 24mm f2.8 lens, in Very Good condition. This is a nice little
lens with a truly wide angle of view.

OSAWA 24MM F2.8 $30 + SHIPPING BY BUYERS CHOICE

Vivitar 28mm f2.0 lens, in Excellent cosmetic condition, but the
aperture is slow. There appears to be oil on one of the blades, I
bought it as a fixer-upper and that is how I'm selling it.

VIVITAR 28MM F2.0 FIXER $BEST OFFER + SHIPPING

Generic Extension tubes, 36mm, 20mm, 12mm, in Very Good condition.

Re: New Toys

2002-08-15 Thread Keith Whaley

William and all...
Back from my trip to the camera store. I didn't know they had so many
battery alternatives!
These guys had sealed Wein (air-zinc) cells that replace the 625
mercury cells, as well as 1.5 v. Varta (German) size 625 alkalines,
called V625U, that fit the Spotmatic F perfectly.
And yes, I put one in my F and it works like a champ!
No more fussing around with stop gap measures.

I know what I'm doing this weekend! ;^)
Thing is, my previous (and still) main camera is my ME. While that
takes K-mount lenses, I only have two of that breed, but all my other
lenses are M-42, which is perfect for the Spotmatic.

As was my intention, I made out on this deal. I now have two Pentax
bodies and plenty of lenses.

Thanks for everyone's help.

BTW, I noticed that on this list there are an equal number of folks
who use Spotmatic Fs and MEs ~ 42 each.
Nice to know there are others with good taste here too!

Thank you for your feedback. I've been checking online web reviews (such as

Re: Developer in clear containers

2002-08-15 Thread Collin Brendemuehl

Yes, they have apparently gone "back" to transparent/transluscent bottles.
My enlarger table is small but practical --
it's an old office credenza. In it there's
drawers of adequate size on both ends, coupled
with sliding doors in the middle. This works very
well for keeping bottles of chemicals in a dark
location. Paper is kept in drawers.

Tonight, perhaps tomorrow if it rains, & while the wife is out of town, I get another
shot series at those "naked ladies" in the back yard.
(They're the lilies that I have on photocritique.net and are called such because the
primary leaves die off before the stem and flower
come up. Hence they have no "skirt".)

Kodak has gone back to clear containers for HC:110 have they? No
big deal, the old clear containers gave an almost indefinite
shelf life, and you keep them in a darkroom anyway, right?

Hi Wallace,

AFAIK, the 1400 requires the main battery to be located in the bay for
the PRAM battery to charge, hence using the PB on AC from the wall
without a main battery in the bay will result in the PRAM battery
eventually going flat, and possibly producing spurious problems, possibly
even the machie refusing to boot.

Very definitely the 1400 should be used purely on battery I would say at
least once a month.

Re: Lenses in the field

2002-08-15 Thread Cotty

Sorry this reply is rather late - I could receive and read the PDML while
in Oslo, but could not post (or send any email) for various reasons

 >Let's suppose you were preparing for an anthropological field trip to
>Greece. Besides observations and interviews you'd also like to do some
>photo-documentation (people, houses, interiors, decorations, landscapes)
>but travel really light at the same time. You're taking an LX and a tripod.

>you own (35-105/3.5 A) or 3) some other combination from the previous?
>Flash or winder?

If I'm travelling light I would not take a tripod at all. I haven't had
one while travelling in Norway recently, and I didn't miss it. In fact
when visiting the Kon-Tiki museum, I photographed Thor Heyerdhal's boat
(sorry about the atrocious spelling Jostein ;-) using the LX and Tokina
17mm, and boy was it dark in there.

I went to floor level, popped the FA-1 off and used the exposed focussing
screen to compose, resting the camera on the floor and against a railing
so that it was tilting backwards, looking up at the Kon-Tiki. Stopped
down to f/8 or so and braced the camera. The exposure was in the order of
3 or 4 seconds, and the LX comes into it's own!

The fact that I had in my backpack a table-top tripod (bendy-leg type) is
of no concern. The fact that I completely forgot it was there, is. The
words 'memory' and 'none' spring to mind...

Actually I do not believe that there is such a thing as 'travelling
light'. I think that you travel with the amount of gear that you think
you will need. At least, I do. For my Oslo trip, I had

LX body + drive
17mm
28-70 2.6
70-200 2.8
AF280T
Rangefinder + 40mm

I used everything. The lens I used least was the 70-200. The lens I used
most was the 28-70, and usually at either 28 or at 70, so in my case
would I have been better off taking a 28 and my beloved 85mm? I think
not. The 28-70 is (for me) a good focal range and the Tokina (which I
have) is a good performer.

The camera I used most was the LX. The rangefinder got a good look-in
doing some street stuff in Oslo (the outdoor city-centre 'Earth From the
Sky' exhibition is superb...and free!). I only used the AF280T on a
mountainous train-ride as fill flash shooting kid's faces as we rode
(some presents for my host, Jostein) - I suspected there would be such an
occasion and hence the only reason I brought the flash. I actually didn't
have the flash with me when visiting the Kon-Tiki or I would have used it
there also. But then, if I didn't think I would have been shooting those
indoor train passengers, I may not have brought the flash. As it was, all
the kit went in a LowePro along with a PowerBook plus various bits - and
*that* is a fair weight. But for photo-touring, the Mac stayed put.

Again, I think I took with me what I thought I would use, and it did get
used. In your case, you are asking is it better to go with the zoom or
the primes. I would say take the primes. The zoom is less weight, but the
primes will beat it for quality IMO. 35-105 at f/3.5? How can you focus
with that? 24 and 85 are a great match. I wouldn't bother with the 135mm
- just move a bit closer with the 85!

While in Norway I had a chance to use Jostein's FA 20 f/2.8 which was a
great joy. I was not impressed with the build quality, but the image
looked fantastic in the finder. It will beat my Tokina 17 (old-style)
readily, and 17 is little improvement on 20. I would consider such a
lens, although I would prefer the A 20mm perhaps for a sturdier feel in
the construction?

Sorry this turned out to be so long. The lights of the city are spread
out before me, a twinkling carpet on a hot summer's eve. It's late and
I'm last to bed. It seemed a good time to sit and write, especially as
the Perseids are not playing ball with us tonight (13th August). I need
to find out who to write to complain to about this - perhaps the
Norwegian Museum of Stars (well they have a museum for everything else,
so why not... :-)

Hope you have a good trip and go with your gut instinct!

Cheers,

Cotty's Norwegian Visit

2002-08-15 Thread Cotty

Hi gang,

Just thought I'd let you all know how it's going here in Norway! (I've
connected my PowerBook up to Jostein's home PC-driven network, and with
minimal fuss and slightly reconfiguring one control panel, I'm *in*...
:-) [but not able to send, more on this later]

We arrived in Oslo on Thursday after a hot and sweaty sleepless night
with friends near Stansted where I managed 90 minutes slumber before rise
and shine at 5 am. An hour and 35 mins after take-off we were descending
into Torp airport south of Oslo where a coach was waiting to whizz us on
another 90 minute trip to the capital. They say Norway is expensive, and
after the driver quoted us the cost of return tickets, I was debating
whether or not to buy my own coach for two journeys and stick it on eBay
at the end... ;-)

A merry Jostein met us at the Bussterminal where we gotten in der
auto-driven-carr-thingy (*not* a Ford BTW) and took us round to his
hill-top home.

We are currently enjoying some tremendous Norwegian hospitality. The
weekend itinerary includes, yes - you guessed it, a trip to a *fjord*,
which I am very much looking forward too. Apparently these things are
like 'Yosemite with knobs on' (colloquial UK expression :-) and I've
loaded up with plenty of film before UK departure.

Things I've brought:
LX+drive
Tokina 17mm
Tok 28-70 2.6
Tok 70-200 2.8
AF280T
Leica CL+40mm

"WHAT NO PENTAX GLASS?" I hear you shriek...

Well, I debated long and hard when packing - you know what it's like: you
squeeze in half a dozen bits of kit only to swap things about again ten
minutes later. Then a further ten minutes after that a further swap as
pieces of equipment play 'musical chairs'. This goes on for at least an
hour until you end up with what you started with. Then there's a delay
until 5 minutes before walking out the door, when in a flurry, everything
gets dumped and a blind panic ensues as anything and everything gets
bundled into the bag, lenses and bodies flying like lemmings over a cliff.

The Tokinas are my only zooms, and I don't have a Pentax wide. Jostein
has some good Pentax glass, I might see if he'll lend me the 20mm for a
few minutes . Stefan (my son) has brought the Z-10 with the SMC F
35-70, so we might get some shots through Pentax glass yet!

Everything's in a LowePro Stealth backpack, PowerBook nestled in there as
well. Come the glorious DSLR arrival (Pentax *or* Canon), the PowerBook
will come in very handy.

Hope everyone is well and as soon as I can get my hands on a *real* beer
here in Norway, I will raise a glass to the PDML.

Regards,

Heedey heedy herdy herdy heedy herdy Cotty. :-)

PS - about 5 days later:

I can connect up via Jostein's home network using ethernet and receive my
regular email, but for some obscure reason could not send. Hence, a bit
like using an RT with a broken mic, I could hear but not speak. I've been
writing responses to posts as I've seen them, saved them, and will be
hooking up once I get home on the 15th of August to send a batch of
useless nonesense to the list.

We're nearly at the end of our stay here in Oslo and it's been
magnificent. Hectic, but magnificent. At the weekend we drove for seven
hours in two cars to the fjords and stayed a couple of nights in
'hytters'. These are small wooden chalets, or huts, and seemingly occupy
any vacant corner of hillside and valley.

The fjords (well the VERY small bit of only one of thousands that we
experienced) was awesome. I have seen the Grand Canyon, Yosemite et al,
and this was easily on a par. Absolutely breathtaking. A 3 hour boat trip
provided plentiful shooting opps and boy did we make use of them. Jostein
wielded his beloved 645NII and various glass with big grins. I darted
about with LX and zooms trying to do some justice to the humbling scenery
which we floated past at a sedate 12 knots or so. I feel a photo-essay
coming on for this...

Other highlights were a train ride up a mountain, a car journey up windy
mountain roads and through numerous tunnels (the longest of which I
experienced was 11km - narrowly missing one that is 25km long and the
longest car tunnel in the world), visiting the capital Oslo where the
women are simply gorgeous (*sigh*), seeing the 'Fram' (sailing ship that
Roald Amundsen went to the antarctic in), Kon-Tiki, and lastly but far
from least, super hospitality and a 645 slide show of some magnificent
trannies from Jostein himself. I'd like to thank Jostein publicly for
putting up with us for the duration - any one of you would share with me
the sentiment if you had the chance to meet this pillar of the PDML.
Simply: What A Guy. Oh yeah - and he can shoot pictures as well ;-)

As a thank you, I'm cooking a meal on our last night - Indian (well, my
interpretation anyway) and the paneer is made and cooling, the wine is in
(no easy task in Norway, I can tell you) and it's all system's go for a
little ringstinger. Time to raise a glass of chilled Chablis to t

The best choice would be to contact print them, then scan the
resulting prints if you want digital files. You could try
putting the plates on a light table and rephotographing them
using Vericolor Slide Film. You could then scan the resulting
negatives.

vary the distance of the lens from the film plane with a bellow
(and easily cover full frame on a Pentax 67), but the distance of
the subject to the front of the lens (well... we could say the
back as the lens is reversed) should not go over the distance
between a 16mm cine lens and the 16mm film in a 16mm camera.
This if you want the best optical quality.

I don't know if this is clear... and if it may interest some

Margo,

I have a 28-105 FA lens as well. I have used it for 3 years as the primary
lens to shoot my PJ Wedding work. I have been nothing but pleased with the
results I get with this lens. I hesitate to say that it is every bit as good
as my prime lenses (I have the 50mm 1.4 as well) but I haven't ever felt the
need to switch to a prime to get better images. I would have to say that it
is my most used lens and has never let me down. I have to add that I do not
use the power zoom feature. I like to have more control in my zooming. The
auto focus is as quick and accurate as my other lenses on the PZ1p and the
pictures are sharp and color rendition is accurate. I would hold on to it
and be glad you have such a gem of a lens.

My SHARPEST lens is my 50mm 1.4. It's a manual focus, so I keep it on my

Adding extension by whatever means increases exposure. For example, my
vivitar S1 105/2.5 has 100mm of built in extension for 1:1 magnification. As
I focus closer the exposure changes, ie f2.5 at infinity 1.5 - 2 stops
difference at close focus. I can then add more extension via tubes or
bellows or whatever and this would change the exposure again.

I've learned to rely on the LX's TTL meter and just compensate for tonal
variation. If you use a handheld meter the calculations become a nightmare.

Re: Very OT: Glass Plate Negatives

2002-08-15 Thread Peter Alling

Try contact printing. Just sandwich photo paper between the glass plate
and some kind of flat surface. Process the paper normally. This can be
done in a closet. You could also use a flat bed scanner, scan the
negatives and use a program like Photoshop to create reversals, there might
be a shadowing problem here however.

As predicted, I am back from my too brief trip to Traverse City, I did have
some of Dario's posters awaiting my return, and I will be sending them on
shortly. Have received most of the payments . . .

Dario - I received the first batch, two rolls of 15 each.

For those who missed the chance in the first go around, or missed the topic

Re: OT: Anti-close up lenses?

Andre,

Actually, the lens I have is a zoom, it's a 3.3mm - 8mm zoom. (VERY
wide). It's an f1.4 lens.

Thanks for the info on reversing a c-mount lens. I'll have to try
it sometimes soon. I have a couple of spare 25 mm lenses, just need to
select an appropriate one, and sacrifice a lens and body cap. One
question: What size hole to drill? Do you remove the entire cover from
the lenscap?

When you get some good results from your lens, let us all know.

LX case for trade?

2002-08-15 Thread Joe Wilensky

I recently bid on and won an eBay auction for what was described as a
"case for MX ME Super etc." While I know the MX case is different
from the ME Super case, I decided to take a chance on it, since I
have both an MX and an ME Super.

I received it yesterday, and the case is, in fact, an LX case -- in
very nice condition with minimal wear. It's leather and has a faint
"LX" embossed on the bottom. It looks like it could accommodate an LX
(without a grip, I assume) and a lens up to an 85mm f2 or even as
long as a 100mm f2.8.

As I don't have an LX and I'm still looking for an original Pentax MX
case, is there anyone who would be interested in a trade?

Re: Lenses in the field (2)

You might need the 1.4 of your 50mm lens.

Another combo is 24-40-85. The 40mm (actually it is a 41/42mm) is
very small, 2.8 like the 35mm. It can be found for less than 100$
sometimes, but usually not...

And think about a tiny & powerfull (20GN) flash that takes only 2AA
bateries. It could "save your life" a few times, at night or in a
dark room.

I'm with Ken and Len on this one.
Sure the fees can be exorbitant but I put the cash directly into my bank
account. People pay one day.. and a few days later it's in my bank

If the fees are that big of a concern there are other options - BidPay etc.
which work just as well.. but not nearly as fast.

So.. in this "go go go - have to have it now" world.. PayPal seems to be a
decent option for speed.

Last time I packed 24/2.8, 35/2 and 100/2.8. (A 85/2 could be a better
choice, but unfortunately I haven't got one.)

About 80% of the pictures were taken with the 35.
I didn't lack my 50/1.4 a single time.

A 35/2.8? Maybe I could do with it too.
BUT: That extra stop seems to be important to have on a "normal" lens. Even
F2 isn't too fast...

Update on status of the U.S. order of posters from Dario

2002-08-15 Thread Stan Halpin

1. The first batch of 30 posters was sent out last Saturday. By now all 18
individuals in that first wave should have received theirs. (I actually sent
19 shipments, one was to my brother for a birthday present. Yes, as CEO of
this enterprise I am willing to sign an accountability statement . . .)

2. I have received the next batch I purchased from Dario. Sixteen people
still have posters coming to them out of this next batch, 14 of those have
paid. I have the mailing tubes for nine shipments. So at least 9, maybe 14,
maybe even 16 more shipments out this Saturday morning.

3. Priority Mail rates went up and morphed into a Zone system. Several
people have paid extra to help cover such unaccounted-for costs, so I'll
still come out about even. But don't be surprised to see a higher price for
the next and final round of posters; I'll be putting out a call for interest
among those of you who have not yet had the chance, but I'll wait 'til I
have a better handle on the average price. Next week sometime . . .

For those who have no idea what I am talking about but have read this far in
the message anyway, see:

one - in Sweden some 2.8's in good condition are not too difficult to find.
What is your experience. Would one lack the 50mm when taking a 24-35-85
combo? And in what situations?

Personally, I love the fast and efficient service and don't mind paying
for it. I have not had a single problem in over 150 transactions.

Most Used Body Survey Results UPDATE 18

2002-08-15 Thread Albano_Garcia

1- You must choose JUST ONE Pentax brand body of any era and format.
2- It must be the body you use most (time, quantity of shots, whatever...)
3- Again, you must choose JUST ONE.
4- Send the answers OFF-LIST, TO ME, to don't disturb list members. I'll
not count votes sent to list.

DISCLAIMER: For the "winner" category, I'll count all the variants of a
same model (ie all Spotties together), so don't start arguing "hey, you
must put all this or that together". Thanks

When converting currency, you'll generally get the best rate if you're
selling the local currency. For example, I live in the US. If I were
to visit, say, Hong Kong, I'd get the best exchange rates if I bought
HK$ in the US and US$ in HK. Even better, in most circumstances, is to
avoid cash currency whenever possible in favor of using a credit card,
where you generally get the best exchange rate, but the card might sock
you with conversion charges, so you must be careful.
