I have noticed that, too. But it is not a real diaphragm simulator as you cannot change the diaphragm at the lens, directly. I assume that it only transfers the open aperture number to the body, i.e. older K-mount bodies should be able to use the FAJ lenses with open aperture. Cheers, Heiko

RE: *istD price rumours...
It was amusing reading the monthly Outdoor Photographer which said Pentax UK wer talking of a price in excess of £2000 - and they thought that was cheap! How quickly things have moved on - makes the mag look a bit stoopid. I really would be surprised to see £900. To be honest, the 10D is getting soo 'cheap' that I would settle for it being no more expensive than that. This may not be as cheap as the general market would like it, but it would do for me! -Original Message- From: zoomshot [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 02 April 2003 17:31 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: *istD price rumours... I am personally familiar with the M28 f:2.8 (earlier version) and K28 f3.5. The 2.8 M lens is OK but unremarkable. OTOH the K3.5 lens is spectacular. Jostein, Thanks for the info. As near as I can tell, the 400T has a GN of 40 at an effective coverage of 28mm. My manual for the 360FGZ says that it has a GN of 36 when zoomed to 85mm coverage, GN 30 at 50mm and GN 22 at 28mm. Based on that, it seems that the 400T actually has about twice the power of the 360FGZ. I am wondering how the 400T would compare to the 500FTZ. I have the same flash and when its set to auto the batteries last for ages. On full they get used up pretty fast. The battery pack was hopeless and after a few months gave up the ghost. I always check with a flash meter, even when its not easy or convenient, it saves much grief. Once or twice in the past I've asked perfect strangers (in groups) to hold up the meter for me. Help , my Optio S is missing!!!
My new Optio S arrived today. I was a bit surprised at how big the box was. I removed a cardboard piece from the top of the box, noting that it contained a USB cable, and I put it aside. Then I removed the contents of the box, including a battery, a battery charger, the manual, a CD, and more cables. Where's the camera? There's no bloody camera in here!! (Actually, I used language that was a bit stronger.) Eventually, I went back and picked up that cardboard piece that was on top. I removed the USB cable and there, behind the cable, was the camera. Yikes! It's so small I almost threw it out with the packing materials! It really looks like it will be a lot of fun, but first I have to charge the battery Dan

Kapton to convert K, M S lenses for matrix metering
I sourced a place that can sell a small piece of that very expensive Kapton insulating tape. This tape is the best choice if you to convert screw,K and M lenses for matrix metering without drilling holes because it is thin (1 mil) and tough. Rolls starts at around 30$ but Loy's Toys sells a 1/2 X 12 piece for a mere $0.50 and that will give you enough tape to fix your whole lens collection! http://www.loystoys.com/kapton-tape.html To make this conversion: http://perso.wanadoo.fr/krg/Photo/multizone.htm Michel will soon change its gauge (gabarit) from jpeg to pdf so that it can print easily without fiddling with the printer's driver. Re: Leicester area?
Jonas Larsson wrote: So I'm going to Leicester for a couple of weeks. Work and not play unfortunately but a bit of spare time should be able to be arranged. Anyone that has any hints for going places in this area or in the town itself? Hi Jonas, Leicester is a multi-cultural British city whose Asian community is the largest in the UK. Demographically, Leicester is a city of nearly 300,000 people and is the only UK city that is ethnically less than 50% native British. This is reflected in the wide variety of cultural activities and also in the superb selection of restaurants in the city centre. There are many Indian restaurants - which are actually more Pakistani than Indian - and several Chinese and one superb Thai restaurant that are all worth visiting. I don't know Leicester well, but I have visited the National Space Centre which is well worth a look. Take some fast film and a good polariser for shots of the exhibits that include American and Russian spacecraft, plus a replica of part of the International Space Station, plus some older rockets including the 1960s British Blue Streak. I like the way the exhibits concentrate on the human element of space travel rather than the technology. This is the only space museum I have visited where the astronauts and ground support engineers are given due recognition for their work as individual human beings. And yes, I have visited the Kennedy and Johnson Space Centres in the USA plus space exhibits at the Smithsonian. They do a good job of promoting the equipment and the astronauts as Gods, but Leicester shows a more human side in my opinion. (I used to work for an organisation which became the largest peaceful user of remote sensing data in the world, and have been fascinated by space since I was a three year old listening to Sputnik 1's first bleeps, hence the enthusiasm!) There is also a preserved steam railway which operates at weekends. The Great Central Railway runs from Birstall (on the Leicester ring road at the most northerly point) to Loughborough. The railway operates like a steam main line railway (for that is what it was) and offers dining trains on Saturdays (lunch and dinner) and Sundays (lunch). Book well in advance for these. One of Loughborough's claims to fame is that no American has ever been heard to pronounce it correctly. It should be pronounced Luff'burra with the accent on the Luff, but I remember travelling from London on a train to Loughborough with an American who insisted on calling it Lurgerburger. ;-) I would recommend visiting the following web sites before your visit: Leicester City Council's Enjoying and Visiting Leicester: http://www.leicester.gov.uk/departments/page.asp?pgid=180 National Space Centre: http://www.spacecentre.co.uk/ Great Central Railway: http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/ Leicester City Football Club: http://www.lcfc.co.uk/ Good luck! As I now have a MZ-5n, I am considering selling my SF-Xn BUT I find there are a few things in the SF that are not found in the MZ body: 1/4000 instead of 1/2000; 1/125 flash instead of 1/100; Infrared flash beam on the SF's integrated flash; possibility to use the integrated flash with another flash mounted on the body for the SF; SF easier to handle with big lenses; SF motor 2.2 im/sec instead of 2 im/sec. Have I forgotten anything? There are two AF focus settings on the SF and one on the MZ. Is the MZ loosing something on that point? Andre --

I just had a magazine print an article of mine without getting copyright and without paying and it's looking like it'll cost more to sue than I'd get out of it, so funds are tighter than usual. I have a morning meeting downtown, after which I'll probably walk around and do some street photography. How about 6:30-7:00? Re: *ist D and FA J mounts
Hi Dario, in your photoshow report, you wrote: The viewfinder has been specially developed for the new format, and you'll see a rather wide image (as wide as in the film *ist), not a smaller one like it happens with some 35mm film derived DSLR's. Well, if true (and I believe you!), it would be truly a breaktrough! How was the eyepoint of the finder? But they stated the magnification at 0.95x ... would that be, the film Ist has about 0.7x or less, that 0.95x ~APS sensor would translate to 0.65-0.7x 24x36mm? This could make sense, as Heiko compared it as similar to MZ-S finder, which is also 0.7x IIRC. Still, 0.95x APS sensor is quite better than the competition. Now only if they make it K-mount and no crippled mount!!! It would be interesting to compare with e.g. MX with its 24x36mm 0.97x finder, to test the theory. Frantisek

This question is for someone with knowledge of the internal mechanics: I picked one up today. Cheap as always. ($35 w/ K1000 50/2!) Anyway, focus zoom generally work ok. Collar is nice and firm. But it has a focus movement that (I think) should only exist when in Macro position. But it makes the extra turn throughout the zoom range. Thoughts? Was there a misunderstanding between the two of you, or did they just flatly print it without your permission? If the latter is the case - up here around (Scandinavia) this would be a clear cut case, where you'd be entitled at least the double standard fee for your type of article + maybe some extra for damages. You wouldn't (at least not here around) even need a lawyer. Just send them a bill. If they refuse to pay, you gather the evidence, send it to appropriate court and ask them to collect the money for you + interest + pay for your (own legal) work. Or is this a magazine that you need to stay friends with? Good luck, either way. Lasse
Re: PDML hit Chichester Part 2
The timetables say its two hours by train for a direct service (ie you don't have to get off and change trains halfway through). Two hours, David? The fastest trains take 58 minutes for the 55 mile journey, and there are a great many services (at least one per hour) that take just 1 hour 5 minutes. Even the stopping trains take only 1 hour 20 minutes. David's train went via Leceister? Oh cripes, I'm off. Saumur plonk. S'nice. Cot _ Oh swipe me! Digital woe - tales of the unexpected
Okay, I'll keep this short cuz it's the witching hour and slumber beckons. Driving home tonight, I found the light near the end of my journey absolutely stunning. Plenty of cloud around, but a rift had opened allowing the sunshine through as it slowly settled towards the horizon (hey, could be the opening lines of a great book here). I was awed. In the last few minutes of its life, the sun was still blazing away through the rift, surrounded by a haze of yellow and orange. In the other direction the trees across the fields were on fire. The hues on the trunks and premature buds were magical. I dashed inside and gathered up the tripod. Quickly I opened up the rucksack and retrieved the 14mm and stashed it into a jacket pocket. I pulled out the 70-200 and mounted it onto the DSLR, caps and hoods shooting across the room. I sprinted outside and, wary that I had only a few minutes left, headed out and across the lane to my neighbour's. A long gravel drive there would give me the ideal vantage point. I reached it just as the absolute climax of the sun's rays were scorching the foliage at near horizontal incidence. Fumbling with giddiness, the lens mount was slammed home, the camera hanging on for dear life. I swung into the sun, lowered my eye to the viewfinder and steadied for a shot. But wait - what's this? No viewfinder information? D'oh. It's digital, dummy. You gotta switch it on! Too many years wielding MXs. Wayward digits groped for the button as the birds were screaming at me, 'Hurry up - it's now or never!' Click. On. At last I lowered my eye to the viewfinder and steadied for a shot (this Groundhog Day?) and still no viewfinder info. Wha.? Of course, many cameras will not work without batteries. Many will, but many will not. None more so than digital ones. My two were happily sat on my desk in the charger, keeping warm. Dawning realisation, I look up as the sun is now heading straight into a cloud the size of New York. The birds are all falling about laughing. I couldn't have written a better script. The last shot would have been a wide one of me standing there in the gravel drive, camera on tripod, looking up going: 'D'oh!', and one of those huge pyramid-shaped weights with '2 tons' written on the side falling on me from a height. Re: Help , my Optio S is missing!!!
Hi Dan, Great story :-) I can confirm it is easily overlooked, I got myself an Optio-S yesterday too. Really amazed at the size and weight of it. It replaces an over 2-year old Canon S20, and while that was 3 megapixels as well it is MUCH bigger and heavier! Also, the Optio has way more options and settings than the Canon had, including some simple things like display of F-stop and shutter speed, or even a live histogram ... Another thing that amazed me was the very good macro capability. In it's 'super macro' setting it covers an area of only 36x27 mm, still with a very usable DOF. (Actually, I used language that was a bit stronger.) Eventually, I went back and picked up that cardboard piece that was on top. I removed the USB cable and there, behind the cable, was the camera. Yikes! It's so small I almost threw it out with the packing materials!
