KX battery drain

2003-08-19 Thread Rodelion
G'day folks,

Someone here familiar with battery drain on a KX?

I've bought it second hand in good state, and it has functioned wonderfully
for half a year :) Nice Cam!

Now if I put in new batteries, they're dead in a few days, while I do
nothing wrong. Some kind of short-circuit? Any ideas?

I'm on no-mail so you can either e-mail me directly, or I'll read the
replies in the archive.

Thanks and take care!

Rodelion.

A test -- 'crossed nicols'

2003-08-19 Thread Dr E D F Williams
If anyone has two circular polarizers I'd be grateful if you would perform a
test. Put one over the other and rotate to see if the field becomes
completely dark when they are crossed. And ... if you also have an ordinary
polarizer try the same experiment using one normal and one circular
polarizer.

More serious competition for *ist-D - Kiss Digital/300D

2003-08-19 Thread Lawrence Kwan
Canon has released its rumoured budget DSLR - Kiss Digital:

http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/eosd/kissd/index-j.html

Very similar to 10D, pentamirror instead of prism, smaller buffer, no
ISO 3200. Weighs less, 560g (vs *ist-D's 550g), and cosst less.

Also new is EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 USM lens designed for Kiss Digital.
"S" stands for short back focus, and this lens cannot be used for 35mm
SLRs.

Fred - I don't know whether to say "I resemble that remark" or not.
For what it is worth, my approach to pricing stuff for sale is basically to
try to avoid too much of a loss. I look at what I paid (when I can find it),
think about depreciation with the passage of time, and pick a number. I have
hardly been on eBay for 6 months, have no sense of whats going on there.
After I posted my stuff last week I went to KEH and did a check - all of my
prices are close to or below their "bargain" prices, and all of the
equipment I'm selling is far beyond that level of quality. If anything, I
have probably underpriced most of the equipment.

I would also comment that it really is inappropriate to make this sort of
broad assertion without naming names and giving examples. By coyly saying
that you don't mean every seller but by not naming the exceptions you have,
you wind up painting all sellers with the same brush. I think it would be
much more useful if you addressed particular sellers, or even better
particular lens prices, and instruct us as to why they are "too high" and
what is available elsewhere. Then both buyers and sellers can benefit from
your wisdom. With our approach all are left wondering what you really mean.

Having now finished with being defensive, I'll make a couple of comments
about your general point: are the posted prices of current/recent sellers
too high? I would say no. If they are, the market and the buyers will
decide. I remember a couple of auctions on eBay 3-4 years ago where you were
willing to bid more than me, and you bought some lenses I wanted. On an
M*300 or a A*300 (I don't remember which) you went $100+ higher than I was
willing to. Does that mean that you paid "too much?" No, it means that the
perceived value of the lens to you was greater than to me. By the same
token, the fact that you see prices today as being "too high" may reflect
your own current perceptions, but may be quite reasonable for someone else.

By analogy, I have been in situations where I bought a new car for $10,000
(made up numbers, for sake of example). I bought it because it was worth
that much to me. So someone down the block buys the same car on eBay
someplace else for $8,000. It really is totally irrelevant to me. It was
worth the price to me, it is still worth the price to me.

A different analogy, closer to home. I bought an MZ-S from my local dealer
for the MSRP, about $975 as I recall. Others at the time were buying from
B&H for $795 or so. Doesn't mean that my dealer was charging "too much", or
that I paid too much, just that I included different elements in my own
"value" equation.

Enough rambling, I need to get back to packaging items I've sold...

I am currently using a D100 which has the same ISO 200 limitation. It is no
problem to get that silky smooth look. It has been my observation that the
best of those pictures often come on cloudy days where ISO 200 is definitely
not a problem. If all else fails you can use a Polarizing or ND filter to
reduce the light and maintain a given F stop for depth of field purposes.

Re: *ist-D photos

2003-08-19 Thread Ed Tyler
Mark,

The images are great. I talked to Don, and he, in his gentle and persuasive
manner, he made me feel really bad for not having been on the Mountain. I
have been reading what I can find about the *istD and believe that Pentax
has an excellent product that they intend to aggressively compete with.
After talking with Don, I believe that we are going to be truly amazed at
just how aggressive Pentax is prepared to be in the digital market.

I am glad that they choose the 2/3rds sensor. The 6 mega pixel cameras have
proven themselves capable of producing finished images that can compete with
film based 35mm images. Pentax, by taking their time in entering the
Digital SLR market has delivered a much more compact and better designed
camera. It is my personal opinion that because of the instant feedback
digital cameras offer, the digital photographer has an opportunity to
consistently capture images of higher quality. The 2/3rds sensor allows and
encourages photographers to lighten their camera bags, 300mm lenses act like
450mm, 400mm lenses act like very expensive and very heavy 600mm lenses.
Other gadgets, like tripods, ball heads, filters, and camera bags can get
smaller and lighter with no loss of quality or function.

The start up knowledge curve for digital cameras is deceptive. Many of the
choices for camera settings are not intuitive even for an accomplished
photographer. You make the point when you talk about white balance.
Digital cameras have a habit of correcting that which does not need
correcting. White in the golden light of morning does not need to be
balanced to pure white. When the ability to handle "RAW" files arrives with
production cameras you will be able to adjust white balance, saturation,
contrast and other such items in post processing. This implies that the
user invests the time to learn how to use one of the image processing
software programs, such as Photoshop.

Thanks to you and the others for your opinions. I guess it
is mostly positive.

I am looking forward to its arrival.

ALEX Said:

The optical design of the F 50mm macro is isdentical
to that of the FA50mm macro. I have the FA version and
I rate it as a excellent. Macro shots are outstanding
and show extremly fine details. IMO it is noticably
better than the A version which BTW focuses down only
to a magnitude of 1:2 (while the F/FA focuses down to
1:1).

Manual focusing is quite good (the FA version has a
"clamp" to increase the friction when the lens is used
manually or mounted vertically on a copy stand). The
focusing ring turns about 340° (from 1:1 to infinity)
which is ok. The FA version has a broader focusing
ring than the F version.

Enjoy,
Alexander

Digital camera sensors are very unforgiving of blown highlights, they are
however most forgiving of underexposure. My suspicion after looking at the
pictures is there was possibly more latitude available to you. It is
amazing what shadow detail can be retrieved from what appears to be a
blocked up shadow.

Hi, Simon,

I don't get it.

Or is that a reference to the South Park episode where they had all the Mega
celebrities? I remember Mega Barbara Streisand and Mega Robert Smith of The
Spoons. Was there a Mega Richard Gere? Or am I way off base?

I hate gerbils, btw. I hope they kill them all. 16 freaking inches long!
Kill them. Kill them now! They're freaking rats with good PR, even the
little ones that kids keep in cages.

cheers,

I'll weigh in on this thread, because it may have been my FS post
(consciously or subconsciously) that started it. While many of you may
not be accustomed to seeing my name show up on the list on a daily
basis, I have been a subscriber to this list for about 8 years, since it
was run by the Pentax corporation itself. I usually lurk, and comment
on things only when I think I can make a real contribution. I think the
last time I made a post might have been when I informed the list about
the custom tripod collar I had made for my FA 300/4.5, and posted
pictures of it on photo.net. But I do read the list and find it (for
the most part) both entertaining and informative.

I'm not meaning to take advantage of anybody with my prices. If you
think I am, you can either choose not to buy, or tell me they are too
high by privately offering me what you think they are worth. Either
way, I'm quite sure you won't find gear in this condition for the prices
I am asking. If you do, tell me and I will reconsider my prices.

Re: FS Prices

2003-08-19 Thread frank theriault
I didn't mean you, Peter. I specifically mentioned that in my post (the part where I
said, "not today"). FWIW, I know you don't post that often, but I certainly recall
seeing your name here in the past. Besides, you went out of your way to tell us that
you're liquidating your 35mm to concentrate on your 645, and even if you're lying and
are really buying a Canon DSLR system or something, at least you tried to keep us
happy - you showed sensitivity to the list .

But seriously, a couple of weeks ago, someone came on who I'd never heard of before,
and tried dumping Pentax gear. That's who I was referring to, not you. I couldn't
forget a name like Peter Popp!

cheers,
frank

Interesting assumption but almost certainly wrong. Pentax and Nikon use the same
sensor, but as sensors are a commodity and in this case made by Sony, it doesn't
really imply anything except having identical subcontractors for some (probably
several) parts. The AF system similarities is simply due to the fact that Pentax chief
engineer for AF systems developed Nikon D2 AF system as well. I don't know if theres
license agreements involved but thats not unlikely. Theres no reason to assume that
theres anything Nikon in the Pentax; the common parts are Sony. The AF system of the
new Nikon D2 is modelled on Pentax SAFOX 8 developed under the leadership of the same
engineer.
After all, Pentax *istD and the D100 compete head on with each other ad doesn't make
any sense for any DSLR manufacturer to give the competition a "cheap camera" to sell.

The NPW is similar to the camera clinic in that there is a free buffet
on Saturday night and a reasonable breakfast buffet on Sunday morning.
The Camera clinic is basically one day, Saturday afternoon through about
noon on Sunday. The NPW is from Friday afternoon until noonish Sunday.
The NPW fee includes admission to the mountain for 3 days ($12.00 per
adult per day regular price), one roll of slide film including
processing, entry to the contest, and lots of fun with PDML'ers and
others. The auditorium seats 165 and when 165 folks have registered,
registration is closed.

As Tom said, unless you camp, you miss out on some great fellowship and
beer drinking at PDML Central (photo here:

It would seem to me that a lot of Pentax users thinking about getting
the *ist or the *ist-D might be on the prowl for Pentax lenses with the
"scarlet letter" A on them. Maybe Pentax might not sell too many FAJ
lenses when they come out since so many of the older A's seem to be out
there. Right now I am more prone to waiting until a second generation
*ist-D comes out that hopefully will meter with the older K and M
lenses. If not Pentax maybe Sigma might come out with a digital slr
using K mount lenses. I know that is pretty farfetch but one can only
dream.

I would guess VERY far fetched since Sigma has their own body and mount

I want to try to get a lens without an A position (because there are a
lot of good lenses for little money on the second hand market at this
moment ) and tryed to meter if with my Pentax *ist body. I took a lens
with an A position and tryed to measure the light with the lens not set

FA*...I never actually did much *real* macro with the 50, just sort of
close ups and standard 50mm stuff. When I used the 200 it was just
macro, so maybe that was the difference. The slides I took with the

They will allow free semi-primitive (no showers) camping on the site for the
photography events if you reserve in advance.

The whole area around Grandfather Mountain is a resort area so there are
many places around to find lodging within easy driving distance. For the
Camera Clinic there is a free meal Saturday evening, and an inexpensive
breakfast buffet on Sunday morning (probably for NPW as well, but I have not
been to that). If you don't camp on site you miss the fun of hanging out
with your fellow PDMLers Friday and Saturday night.

Unfortunately (for the attendees) this year they filled all the seats in the

pre-register, as it has been for the Nature Photo Weekend the past few

identical to each other (and both to be quite different from the A
50/2.8 Macro).

The F 50/2.8 Macro is an extremely sharp lens. However, I have
found it annoying to use (focusing manually). I usually found the
A 50/2.8 Macro a nicer lens to use, sacrificing a little sharpness
for much better qualities in ~every~ other respect (except for
autofocusing, I guess - ).

No fun. Join the many of us that jump at an interesting lens and
then ask the PDML what we think about it (often while still waiting
for it to come in the mail) - .

Is that the A* or the FA*, Tom? I would say that the A* 200/4 Macro
might be just a tad sharper than the F 50/2.8 Macro, but it's a bit
of an "apples and oranges" comparison because of the different focal
lengths.

I would also rate the A 100/2.8 Macro (easily my overall favorite -
and most used - macro lens) to be essentially equal to the F 50/2.8
in sharpness (and much more satisfying to use for manual focus).

FS: S-M-C Tak 24mm f/3.5, Super-Tak 85mm f/1.9

2003-08-19 Thread Joe Wilensky
I will have photos of these two lenses available in a week or so, but
here's a heads-up if anyone is interested.
Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 24mm f/3.5 lens. Some exterior wear is
visible, so KEH would probably rate it as bargain, but the glass is
really nice, and it's smooth focusing and beautiful. Includes
original front and rear caps, original lens case, and original
rectangular lens hood and lens hood case. $250. Free shipping in the
continental U.S.
Super-Takumar 85mm f/1.9 lens. Also some exterior wear visible, but
glass is clean and clear. Similar KEH bargain condition that others
would probably list as EX-. Includes original front and rear caps and
original round hood that reverses over the lens for storage. No lens
case, though. $225. Free shipping in the continental U.S.

RE: shooting the moon part II

2003-08-19 Thread Robert A. Kelly
I read somewhere that the formula for calculating maximum exposure time
for shooting the moon is 250/ lens focal length = maximun speed in
seconds. So if shooting with a 50mm lens would give a maximum exposure
time of 5 seconds and a 500 mm lens would have a maximum exposure time
of 1/2 or .5 second. Shooting the moon with your 400 mm lens you
should expose for no longer than .625 seconds, if you use a longer
exposure time the movement of the moon will be apparent.

Boris,

The Soft lenses are unique in that they aren't open aperture viewing
until you dial to the end of the soft effect (about f8). This gives
you the ability to see the softening effect and to be able to focus
well by stopping down. They function properly on *ist and *ist D.
Once you get the lens, you will see what I mean.

Re: Views on the F 70-210

2003-08-19 Thread Joe Wilensky
I really like my F 70-210 -- it feels a bit better constructed than
most of the FA lenses and it does perform very well. Very nice
handling on a PZ-1/PZ-1p. I haven't tried it on smaller bodies.

The FA lenses have the encoded MTF data (tells PZ and later cameras
the lens' optimal quality aperture if you select that exposure mode)
and also tell the camera what distance the lens is focused at, which
can enhance the camera's multi-segment metering decisions and program
mode choices. The F zoom lenses do communicate what focal length
they're set to, though, which is useful for shutter speed selection
in program mode, among other things.

Woops, I keep forgetting about that one. They left the A setting off of it,
I presume because the performance changes so radically depending on aperture
they didn't want it working in program mode or shutter preferred auto.
