WAY OT: CNet
Hi all, I downloaded a free program via 'CNet' yesterday and what happened? The operation resulted in more than 25 'dataminers' and smart cookies. It took me considerable time to get rid of it all. I had to edit the registry by hand before I could clean out the last files. Most of the nasties were associated with CNet's download manager - 'Kontiki' - which was installed at the same time. CNet, I thought until now, was a reputable bunch. Beware of Kontiki. No - the HP is, as I stated, 600 ppi *input resolution* in normal mode, 1200 ppi in best-quality. You only get any benefit from best quality if you feed it a 1200 ppi image.

Ah, but the HP PhotoPrinters also have multiple levels of intensity; they can deposit different amounts of ink at each possible position. The original PhotoSmart printer was a true 300 ppi printer, without having to dither. The current crop really are 1200 ppi (and in fact they use 1200 x 4800 subpixel dither for even finer level control).

Re: OT - I'm back, Suckers!
Hi, again, Lukasz, Well, as you now know I bought an LX. And, you're right, I was broke. And, in fact, I'm still broke. I paid for the LX by cheque; just wait until Vic tries to cash it. Hee hee hee... But, seriously, yeah, this summer I was having serious cash flow problems. Two things changed a little bit. First, over the last few weeks we've gotten a little busier at work (it may be only temporary, but it's meant two 1/2 decent paycheques). Plus, I changed residences last month, and that saves me quite a bit of rent each month. Those two situations combined to allow me this purchase. Besides, when you hear of something you really want, you figure out a way, right?I mean, this is the first body I've bought in well over a year. I've been a very reasonable boy... And, your joke is in no way offensive. I'd have sold a kidney for it, but I only have one left, and I need that one. I already sold the first one to pay for my Leica... cheers, frank "The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true." -J. Re: Printer resolution (was: Re: posted *istD Samples)
> > if you are above then it just wastes processing. With the current generation of printers, it's getting pretty hard to have an image that's higher-resolution than the printer! My current HP is 600 dpi in normal mode, 1200 dpi in best quality. Even on 8.5x11 paper at 600 dpi that's 30+ megapixels - more than a 4000ppi scan can get from a 35mm frame. An 11x17 print at 1200 dpi would need an incredible 250 megapixels. I'm not sure even a 6x7 frame can deliver that amount of real data. So either there are a lot of large-format users out there, or the printer is no longer the resolution-limiting step in the process.
Re: More *ist-D images
Agreed. But if you've got time to take incident light readings, or to spotmeter and assign that vaue to a specific zone, then you probably have time to pop off a test shot and take a look at both the histogram and the exposure. As someone here pointed out, a dgital camera is by far the best lightmeter you're likely to get your hands on. Given that, it seems seems slightly ridiculous to argue the merits of one form of auto-exposure metering over another. Each have strengths; each have weaknesses. Better by far to learn when to rely on the camera, and when you need to override it. > Except in many situations you can't repeat the shot. Re: more notes on PhotoPlus
i noticed with my *istD images something really annoying that i had forgotten to check on images that others have uploaded. the JPEG files have an internal resolution of 72dpi. i was so happy that Nikon changed to 300dpi embedded resolution. that means i have to remember to change all the images i get out of the camera to 300dpi. the bundled FAJ 18-35 might be a bottom feeder lens, but it is good enough for the *istD to produce decent results. i compared two of the images i took, one at at ISO 200 and one at ISO 800, and i can see leaving it in ISO 800 for a lot of situations. For the Jobo, figure about 10% of the list price. About the only thing that is holding value is the Expert drums which seem to go for 50% of new price. Too bad that they are the one thing I still want to buy. That's just my experience in buying them. I sold a 135-M 3.5 for $60. It's a great lens, and it's widely available at that price.I've never seen a 135 3.5 go for more than $100. Even a mint K 135/2.5 can be had for around $150 to $200. This means that you get better tonal separation in dark tones but it is easier to underexpose to the point where you get nothing at all recorded on the film. For those of you who haven't seen published film curves, they look something like this: exposure 1/ / / / 0/ film density 0 1 The curve for Tri-X is flatter at the ends than that for T-Max, meaning that there is less change in the density of the film at increasingly high and low levels of light. This makes Tri-X more forgiving of under and over-exposure than T-max, but also a little muddy and flat looking. After more than a decade of using T-max 400 film for journalism (because it pushes better, has finer grain, and is in general contrastier than Tri-X) I am rediscovering the subtle, "old-fashioned" tonality of more traditional films in the form of Ilford Pan-F. I have never applied this rule and the 8-1/2 x 11 inch (A4) prints I get off my Epson 870 are, to my eyes, excellent. I generally try to ensure that I have near, at, or above 300 ppi when I print. I did, though, once make an 8-1/2 x 11 print at 180 ppi, and thought it was pretty good. Now I have Genuine Fractals, which I put to use for anything that will print at under 250 ppi. Joe

Yep, that is what they say. Only thing is that I have, as I have said on the list before, held one of them in my own grubby little hands. One off, prototype, special, or production, there is a least one 35/1.4 KA-mount lens out there in consumerland. It was in the used case at a photo store, early 90's, and priced way out of my budget. RE: strange dedicated lens hood
It seems that the hood would make a very good investment piece because the existence of the hood must mean that somewhere in the world there is at least a prototype of the lens. If the lens should fall into the hands of a serious collector, she/he might leap at the chance to get the hood for it, giving you a nice profit. I would buy the hood and put it for sale on eBay, with a reserve set to make it worth my while. You might have to do that a few times before you found the owner of the lens but it would be fun to try. Or its cousin, the Sigma AF 300/4 APO Macro, which also focuses close. They both have nice rotating tripod collars. They are much sharper and somewhat faster than the newer 170-500 and 50-500 zooms, and since both lenses are discontinued they can even be found new for decent prices. Plus they are good enough optically to shoot wide open or with teleconverter. These lenses will not need to be replaced with "something sharper" because they are both keepers. The close-focusing capability of these two Sigma APO Macro lenses is *much* more useful than the zoom function of the 170-500. It is about perfect for butterflies and other larger bugs. I had the 400/5.6 APO Macro, and except for the fact that it did not register correct aperture with a Super Program, it was a first rate lens in every respect. As for focal length, there's not really much difference between 400mm and 500mm in the field. I understand about the need to keep costs down. However, when it comes to long lenses, the least expensive alternative is to get a good, sharp lens the first time out. -- John Mustarde www.photolin.com

Re: Photo plus show
The show was about the same size as last year. Another company MIA was Sigma. The Pentax booth was in a much more prominent location than last year. With the pro orientation of the show, the Pentax booth doesn't get a lot of attention. One of the reps was carrying on about how every lens, for every format, could be used on the camera, but didn't mention the metering issues. I did try the *D, and though it was very nicely done. The controls are useable and intelligible, with out the manual, for what every I tried to do with it. The AF is even finally competent. No, I'm not interested in buying one. BR From: "Butch Black" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I went to the Photo Plus show in NYC yesterday. The show seemed small to me, but it seems to be shrinking every year. A lot of digital, little cutting edge new. The Pentax booth was modest compared to N***N and C***n. I did get to play with the *ist-D. It feels nice, and solid. I photographer friend who was with me also commented on how nice it felt and how much better it felt to the Digital Rebel. Now the bad news. Pentax seems to be getting "dissed" (is *ist D pig latin for dissed?) by some of the accessory manufacturers. I went to capture 1 to ask if they were going to make their RAW converter for the ist D. The person I spoke to listed a half dozen other cameras that would get it first, and doubted that Pentax would have enough market share to make it worthwhile for them. I went to Adobe and asked if their RAW converter in the new Photoshop CS would handle Pentax's raw, nobody knew, though they were kind and polite about it, and told me I might find the answer on their site on-line. Even the Pentax rep sort of side stepped my comment of metering incompatibilities with the ist D and older lenses. Butch

So the future of this camera is to be repaired by me or to be cannibalised for spare parts! > -Oorspronkelijk bericht- > Van: Ron Chappel [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Verzonden: Saturday, November 01, 2003 1:43 PM > Aan: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Onderwerp: Re: Problem, mirror of A-3 stays up, how to fix? > > > I've seen this so many times with pentaxes- > It's a symptom of it needing a service basically > i THINK.Hopefully i'm wrong > cheers > ron >

Well done. If the *istD has reached Tyneside, electricity and running water can't be far behind!!. *ist D reaches Tyneside!!!
Hi, Saw on in the flesh today for the first time. Nice marketing, Pentax. I live in only the third biggest conurbation in the UK (5-7 million people) and it took you over a month to get one here. Stuck in a corner of a window display of one of the smallest camera shops in the city. The 300D, conversely, is even in the box shifter shops now, with whacking big adverts next to it. Even allowing for the price discrepancy, it is no wonder the Pentax market share is so limited. Grumpy Old Man

Should have had a warm-up filter on this bright but overcast day. 2. slight cutoff of subject. Naughty boy, you are old enough to know better. Fixed length lens = more use of feet. 3. _maybe_ would have been better if she had been looking at camera. I am far too slow and unpractised to catch real decisive moments. 4. skillful use of fill flash might have improved colour balance. mike

Problem, mirror of A-3 stays up, how to fix?
Dear pentaxians, This morning I wanted to take a picture with an A-3. Pressing the button made the mirror flip-up and further.. nothing! Replacing the two penlights did not help. (The battery check light was okay anyway) Gentle push on the mirror does not bring it down. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Jos
eBay & a hotshoe adapter FG
Hey people, I was doing some shopping on eBay and bid on a hot shoe adapter FG, http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2960839729&category=30084 and didn't really have to because I found another one which comes with the cord too. Rather than retract a bid, I was hoping someone else might want to outbid me 50cents for it? Could post a coin to you if you want :) Thanks if you do, thanks if you don't. Cheers, Ryan
November PUG
Great PUG this month, some nice frames in there. Special congrats to Thrainn Vigfusson, Martin Mielke, Jerome Reyes, Stephen Pruetz, Jan van Wijk, Kenneth Waller, Harald Rust, Mike Wilson, for frames that I particularly like (not in any order..). Keep up the good work people! Best Regards, Ryan

Re: Lens Tripod Mount?
it's a good lens. it's about as sharp as my FA 24-90, perhaps a little better, but it is significantly heavier than the Sigma 170-500. i don't know if you will find it very cheaply on the used market. two things i don't like about it. it only stops down to F22, and there are no click stops on the rotating tripod collar at 0 and 90 degree marks. since the lens is so heavy, you must get a very sturdy tripod and head. figure on spending close to half the price of the lens on a tripod. you'll never use the 50-500 at the short end except in emergencies, so count on the lens being extended most of the time and it's pretty long. PUG
I've just spent two hours looking at the new PUG gallery. I don't consider myself much of a critic of landscapes. I am most interested in portraits, macros, geometric compositions and images that use colour in interesting ways. This large gallery has outstanding examples of all those.
