2006-03-09 Thread Don Williams
Someone posted about watermarking images the other day. I added a
copyright watermark to the images in the new (Prints) crystal pictures
gallery. They're unobtrusive and don't mess the pictures up at all.

RE: geso: Flying things

2006-03-09 Thread Bob W
On my system the pictures are all in one row, which leaves a lot of unused
space beneath them, and forces me to scroll across - not very user friendly.
You might want to distribute them across several rows so the viewer can get
a better overview.

There is a photo of a heron's head which is the only one that stands out for
me.

There are certain categories of photo which, so I'm told, make the hearts of
judges and assessors sink. They include lions, children and birds because it
is so difficult to come up with something new and interesting. I once sat
through an assessment with the RPS in which several bird portfolios were
shown. Towards the end the assessors had so obviously run out of things to
say that they just flipped through the photos and said "more birds on twigs
with catchlights". So you have your work cut out if you want to impress the
judges of the BBC Wildlife competition.

The photo of ducks in flight is also quite good. I wouldn't discourage you
from entering them, but you're setting yourself a very high standard to
achieve.

Photomicrographs

2006-03-09 Thread Don Williams

Hi all,

Someone on the list approved of my posting links to microscope pictures.

Recently I've been subverting my instrument in the direction of 'arty'
stuff. I've posted a large gallery of new crystal pictures to my
website. There are no 'Back' or 'Home' buttons. To get back one needs to
close the page (or tab). I have found that because I'm working with four
different servers on three different ISPs I get into an awful lot of
trouble with links. I'm trying to sort all this out but putting in
navigation is fraught with difficulty (for me) now since after six years
or so I have no real idea of what the hell's going on. There are many
redundant files and I'm very slowly cleaning up the mess.

The new gallery can be found via the red 'Prints' button on the main
page and then by clicking the 'Prints' button on the bottom of the blurb
page -- 'mimosa' is faster than 'personal'. All the pictures were made
with the *ist D on a Lomo Research (polarising) microscope. Levels were
adjusted and in some cases unsharp masking was used to perk the image up
a little. There is no camera lens involved. The camera sits on a
trinocular head and the image arrives at the sensor via a highly
corrected transfer lens. The objectives used were 10/0.25 and 40/0.65
Leitz Fluotars. These objectives provide a completely flat field and are
semi-apochromatic. The sensor collects about 50% of the projected field.
Mirror lockup (2sec delay) is used and the camera determines the
exposure -- set to 'other than A'.

Hi Kenneth

I agree with you about the cropping. The original had a bit more
space at the top but I cropped it to balance with the bottom. I
might try enlarging the canvas and cloning a bit more space on the
bottom.

I agree that the highlight just in front of the bird is a bit bright
but I quite like the rest of the background.

Thanks for the feedback

Re: Noisy Miner

2006-03-09 Thread Kenneth Waller
Brian, obviously a wonderful shot of the bird, good looking specimen, crisp
detail, well focused, good lighting, nicely backlit.. It is however, in my
opinion, ruined by the background highlight. Could also use more room from
the beak & tail to the edges.

Sorry if you've come here expecting to see a carousing human who
spends much of his life underground - this is a photo of a bird.

This little guy was not long out of the nest and was still a bit
mystified by the world outside. The parents were not far away
screeching at me while their offspring posed for the camera.

Comments of all sorts welcome.

Hi Bruce

Thanks - actually a summary of the details can be seen by clicking the
"i" icon. But, yes, I used an AF280T flash (TTL mode) with the Pentax
80-320 zoom on the DS. I quite like this lens even if it isn't quite
'top of the range'.

At first glance it appeared to me she was wearing an overall; look at the
derriere, where structure is lost. The tattoo (important in my opinion for
the composition) is also "dull".

Funny light, and a bit of unknown funkiness, probably something i did to it
when making it web ready.
The tattoos were very dull, the girl is of African heritage, and has fairly
dark skin. The tattoos didn't pop out like they would on a caucasian skin
colour.

Indeed; what the heck happened to the poor woman from the waist down? Is
this, perhaps, a "sanitized" version [different from the competition
entry]
intended for web consumption? It is troubling to think that, after all
the

rules for film and simplicity, the judges would allow a scanned and
seriously altered image. If you're going to allow scanning, photoshop,
etc,

why insist on film to begin with?

Funny you should mention that.
The picture is a crop, but what I am showing is just a downsized and
sharpened version of what I submitted.
I found it annoying that they wouldn't let me shoot digital, especially
considering that every print except mine, the number two picture, and one
that was obviously a badly done darkroom manipulation, were printed on a
digital photo printer at London Drugs.

Bill Owens swears by using 181 however and that route avoids the
rediculous 1+ hour detour. Otherwise you might as well come up I-77 and
take 421 over to Boone and 105 to GFM (2.5 to 3.0 hours).

Bill sent me to GFM on the I-77 to Statesville (had I had more time, I would
have stopped at the Balloonworks factory for a visit), and then over to
Boone and on to GFM.
I followed him back to Charlotte on a much more scenic route (181?), though
the closer we got to his place, the more confusing the road system got.

Actually, microfiber cloths are far more likely to trap and hold grit
and cause scratches. Genuine lens cleaning tissue won't scratch.
Neither will toilet tissue. Facial tissue and paper towels contain
titanium dioxide clay as a filler and will scratch. There is a lot

GFM is about 2 to 2.5 hours (depending upon weather, traffic, and how
familiar you are with driving in the mountains) from Charlotte Airport
if you come the short way (up 321 or 181).

Note: As of now US-321 is closed on Tuedays and Thursdays from noon to 2
pm between Lenoir and Blowing Rock (They are in the process of turning
the 8 mile stretch of 2 lane twisty into a devided 4 lane up the

K85-210/3.5

2006-03-09 Thread Collin R Brendemuehl

Saw one today. First one I've ever seen.
The prev owner modified the mount to be A-class. :(
It's only $100 and has the hood.
And the hood is another story. It's got threads on the inside
for reverse storage and on the inside as well for putting
on the cap when the hood is stored on the lens.
It's big, too. Even bigger than the A70-210/4.
All in all, a nice piece of hardware.

But Stan's comment site has no remarks about it.
Anyone out there got one? Thoughts?

Which would put Pentax about a year behind the competition in launching
their model. At least they'll have one with the same pixel count as the
Mamiya, rather than 20% fewer.

The sensor Mark referenced is the kodak 22 MP. The latest reports seem to
be leaning toward this rather than the 18MP.

I think you're right, Mark. As was circulated here recently, Kodak
claims the Pentax 645D will use their 18MP sensor.

Drive? I'm trying to figure out how much camera gear I can manage to
pack into a set of Tourmaster Cortech soft luggage on my motorcycle.
Anyone going to GFM have an extra camera bag they could loan me for
the duration of the weekend? Would make the packing much easier...

I like the composition; always liked diagonal waves curves, plus the
line that you get by "connecting" the birds complete this one for me.
It is a touch flat in my monitor but didn't bother me that much.

As others have said, great composition with the curved line of birds.

I was shooting sanderlings in Bethany last week and saw one hoping
around on one leg. apparently the other was malformed (unlikely?) or
had been lost due to injury. Seemed well adjusted and had no trouble
feeding...

Kodak sensor. Probably this one:
