Hello Vic, The fox is very striking. I'm curious if you did some work on the background to soften or blur it. It seems just a bit different looking than the foreground. The grass is nice, too. I happen to have a 2X Macro Focusing Teleconverter that I intend to sell (but I haven't tried very hard to do it), since I now also own a real macro lens. This will effectively turn your 50mm (which is quite well suited for extension rings or this kind of converter, by the way) into a poor-man's (but the picture quality is not that poor, really) 100mm 1:1 macro (see below.) Let me know if you are interested. As for macro, I must say I'm somewhat confused. I want to take close up pictures of bugs and flowers and that sort of stuff, and I know I need a macro lens to be able to focus real close, but what kind of focal distance do I need? Depends on the focal length of the lens, I guess, but the minimum focus distance of the Pentax 100mm 1:1 macros is 31cm. The focusing capability of macro lenses is generally expressed as a ratio - between the size of a subject's depiction on the film and the actual size of that subject, at the minimum focusing distance. A true macro lens can do at least 1:1, meaning that when you focus as close as possible, you get a life-size image on the film (which means it will be larger than life on a typical print, of course.) Low-cost macros will usually give you 1:2, while zooms with a macro function offer something like 1:3. - Toralf -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: SV: FA-50/1.4 (used) price
At any rate, perhaps a comparison with Canon or Nikon would be more relevant. I've noticed that both these producers offer 50s that are considerably less expensive than the FA50/1.4. Canon and Nikon both produce very low cost 50mm lenses in the f/1.8 and f/2 range. While they're not 'bad', they're nowhere near as good as the FA50/1.4 on rendering, or even the Pentax 50/1.7 series. The comparable lenses are the Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF lens at $280, and a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM at $295 (BH Prices). Yep. Prices around here are higher, as usual, but in relative terms the situation is not that different. I think the Nikon may be bit closer to the Pentax (and further away from the Canon) in price than indicated here, though... I've used both of them. These are built with the same mount quality as the Pentax FA50/1.4 but aren't quite as good on imaging performance. OK. The only other 50mm f/1.4 lenses in the 35mm SLR range that I think are comparable in performance was the Contax mount Zeiss Planar and the Leica Summicron- R, both of which are substantially more expensive. Pentax continues to offer the budget minded A50/2 lens at $70. It's nowhere near the performance of the f/1.7 and f/1.4 lenses, but it's still a good lens. So it's also a lot poorer than my A50/1.7? That's a bit interesting. The shop where I bought this lens used a couple of years ago also had an A50/2.0 in similar condition, and they had actually priced it higher... And there is also the A50/1.2, of course, but that's 2-3 times as expensive as the FA50/1.4, and perhaps doesn't perform quite as well besides the higher speed? By the way, how about the new(ish) one from Voigtlander/Cosina? Some of their lenses (not sure about the 50mm) seem to have a very good reputation... - Toralf -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Toralf Lund wrote: At any rate, perhaps a comparison with Canon or Nikon would be more relevant. - Toralf The Voightlander 50mm f1.5 rangefinder lens is actually pretty good, but for their best production, you'd need to get either the Voightlander 50mm f2 Heliar (only available as part of the R2m and R3m limited run sets) or get the 50mm ZM or 50mm ZF Planar they make for Carl Zeiss. CV doesn't make a 50mm SLR lens under their own name, but they do make a very nice 40mm f2 Ultron in MC and SC versions. -Adam -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

But I also think you can still get a lot more out of what you are doing. You have not exhausted it yet by a long shot. I find taking a bit of nature and isolating it is a nice way to present nature. That's a bit interesting. The shop where I bought this lens used a couple of years ago also had an A50/2.0 in similar condition, and they had actually priced it higher... The A50/2 is definitely an economy offering. I didn't like its sharpness at all much under f/5.6. A series only, and probably out of production although they do seem to continue to show up. By the way, how about the new(ish) one from Voigtlander/Cosina? Some of their lenses (not sure about the 50mm) seem to have a very good reputation... No experience with any except the Heliar 15mm in Leica Thread Mount, which was remarkably good for the money. Re: bought an MX - need some advice
Any film camera is not a future purchase at this point in time. The MX is a wonderful camera, reminds me a lot of the Nikon FM I used for 20 years, but it's not something for which to consider a future. That said, if you enjoy working with film, stock up on your favorite emulsions and go for it. Be aware that at some point, you'll likely *need* do learn how to do your own processing as film and photofinishers start disappearing. If I buy extra lenses, will they have any market value in the near future? The good news is that nearly any lenses you buy for the MX will also work on a Pentax DSLR. Try to buy Pentax-A series or later lenses, the DSLRs can use them with more options/features. Anyway, I am mostly interested in trying street photography and macro. Currently I have a basic 50mm lens (f1.7), which is not especially suited for neither... Not true, a 50mm lens is very good for both. The Pentax 50/1.7 is a very good lens for macro with extension tubes, and is also great at street work. My favorite for street work is a 35mm or 40mm lens. The Pentax-M 40mm f/2.8 is a very compact pancake design that works very well for this, and the current series Pentax-FA35/2 is superb. For me, 28 was never a great lens on 35mm ... a little too wide in one case, not quite wide enough in another. I preferred a large step between 35 and, say, a 20-24mm for ultrawide. As for macro, I must say I'm somewhat confused. I want to take close up pictures of bugs and flowers and that sort of stuff, and I know I need a macro lens to be able to focus real close, but what kind of focal distance do I need? I really have a difficult time picturing the field of view at such close distances. Get a copy of the book Closeups In Nature by John Shaw. Until you know more specifically what you want to shoot and what's required, use extension tubes and your 50mm lens to learn with. Re: OT:SD-CF adapter
I did a quick Giggle search on sd cf card adapter and 5,400,635 hits came up. Shel [Original Message] My Flash Trax only accepts CF cards. In order to use it with my *ist DL, I need an adapter, so I can download my SD card into the Flash Trax using the CF card connection. FS: several Pentax lenses (and an AF body)
For sale (I have reduced the prices of several items since my last For sale message): SMC Pentax-A 15 mm. 3.5, , an excellent ultra wide lens, compatible in all exposure modes with Pentax DSLRs, LN- 550 euros. SMC Pentax-A 50 mm. 1.2, the fastest lens Pentax has ever made, in A version (compatible with all exposure modes with Pentax DSLRs) LN- 250 euros. Tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8 ATX Pro II (for Pentax AF). LN in box, including both caps, hood and instruction manual. A very well made, fast pro zoom. 220 euros. SMC Pentax 85 mm. 1.8 (K series)+ original lens hood, well used, but no dust inside. The lens was serviced 3 years ago and shows some brassing, but the aperture and focus rings work smoothly, There's a very tiny coating mark in the back element, hardly visible, which doesn't affect the image quality. As many of you will know, nowadays it is a very difficult to find lens, and when found, quite expensive. 250 euros. SMC Pentax-FA 80-320 mm. 4.5-5.6 (AF, black version). Ex+. 120 euros. Pentax MZ-5 AF SLR + F remote switch and FG battery pack. Ex+. 120 euros. Prices don't include shipping expenses from Spain.
