I like the new one a little better. It doesn't seem quite as
contrasty, but provides a little more detail. Looking at the crop

I find I'm liking it more and more.

Hello Vic,

The fox is very striking. I'm curious if you did some work on the
background to soften or blur it. It seems just a bit different
looking than the foreground.

The grass is nice, too. I have to agree that many older lenses do
quite well with the digital bodies. I've got a K200/2.5 that is very
good and several A lenses as well.

Nice showing, keep the pics coming.

Also, the 50mm 1.7 lens you have is not only an excellent lens, but it

said to have used 50mm lenses almost exclusively

I happen to have a 2X Macro Focusing Teleconverter that I intend to
sell (but I haven't tried very hard to do it), since I now also own a
real macro lens. This will effectively turn your 50mm (which is quite

into a poor-man's (but the picture quality is not that poor, really)
100mm 1:1 macro (see below.) Let me know if you are interested.

Depends on the focal length of the lens, I guess, but the minimum focus
distance of the Pentax 100mm 1:1 macros is 31cm.

The focusing capability of macro lenses is generally expressed as a
ratio - between the size of a subject's depiction on the film and the
actual size of that subject, at the minimum focusing distance. A true
macro lens can do at least 1:1, meaning that when you focus as close as
possible, you get a life-size image on the film (which means it will be
larger than life on a typical print, of course.) Low-cost macros will
usually give you 1:2, while zooms with a macro function offer something
like 1:3.

Re: SV: FA-50/1.4 (used) price

2006-06-30 Thread Toralf Lund

At any rate, perhaps a comparison with Canon or Nikon would be more
relevant. I've noticed that both these producers offer 50s that are
considerably less expensive than the FA50/1.4.

Canon and Nikon both produce very low cost 50mm lenses in the f/1.8
and f/2 range. While they're not 'bad', they're nowhere near as good
as the FA50/1.4 on rendering, or even the Pentax 50/1.7 series. The
comparable lenses are the Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF lens at $280, and a
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM at $295 (BH Prices).
Yep. Prices around here are higher, as usual, but in relative terms the
situation is not that different. I think the Nikon may be bit closer to
the Pentax (and further away from the Canon) in price than indicated
here, though...

  I've used both of them.
These are built with the same mount quality as the Pentax FA50/1.4
but aren't quite as good on imaging performance.
OK.
  The only other 50mm
f/1.4 lenses in the 35mm SLR range that I think are comparable in
performance was the Contax mount Zeiss Planar and the Leica Summicron-
R, both of which are substantially more expensive.

Pentax continues to offer the budget minded A50/2 lens at $70. It's
nowhere near the performance of the f/1.7 and f/1.4 lenses, but it's
 still a good lens.

So it's also a lot poorer than my A50/1.7? That's a bit interesting. The
shop where I bought this lens used a couple of years ago also had an
A50/2.0 in similar condition, and they had actually priced it higher...

And there is also the A50/1.2, of course, but that's 2-3 times as
expensive as the FA50/1.4, and perhaps doesn't perform quite as well
besides the higher speed?

By the way, how about the new(ish) one from Voigtlander/Cosina? Some of
their lenses (not sure about the 50mm) seem to have a very good
reputation...

not to be pretty.

At my wife's office they still use film X-rays, but the office is

Hi list - Just wanted to say that lurking on this list recently was a
big factor in my decision to stick with Pentax and get a *ist DL for
my first dSLR. (And to go for the SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 lens with it).
Thanks - I'm pretty happy with it so far.

To celebrate, I'm posting these two shots as a passing of the guard:

 Taken with the ZX-50:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelmccracken/178045306

Taken with the new hotness *ist and the old kit lens:
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaelmccracken/178045312

I still need some time to get used to this thing, but it's been fun so
 far.
Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

 Cheers,
 -mike

Hi Roman,

I've watched a lot of movies to see how the DP and the cinematographer
frame their shots, and also pay attention to lighting.

Your subject references movies, but your message is about TV ... generally,
lighting and framing are less creative and interesting with TV images, imo.

Regardless, as photographers it's always a good idea to look at the work

Re: SV: FA-50/1.4 (used) price

2006-06-30 Thread Adam Maas
Toralf Lund wrote:

- Toralf

The Voightlander 50mm f1.5 rangefinder lens is actually pretty good, but
for their best production, you'd need to get either the Voightlander
50mm f2 Heliar (only available as part of the R2m and R3m limited run
sets) or get the 50mm ZM or 50mm ZF Planar they make for Carl Zeiss. CV
doesn't make a 50mm SLR lens under their own name, but they do make a
very nice 40mm f2 Ultron in MC and SC versions.

Re: SV: FA-50/1.4 (used) price

2006-06-30 Thread P. J. Alling
The 50 f1.2 preforms way better than the 50 f.1.4 and 50 f1.7 at f1.2.
The same can be said for the f1.4 vs. the f1.7 at f1.4.

Toralf Lund wrote:

Talking about aesthetic side of the question, -
back in 40s-70s, in the Soviet Union and probably other east-european
countries, X-ray films were used to record western music smuggled in.
That was how many people in the Soviet Union heard American jazz,
and later, - rock/rock-n-roll.
What is also interesting here is that at least one artist was
insipired by this fact.

Igor

PS. From the practical point of view, - the digital X-ray machine
that was used in the dental surgeon office allows to take an image
of all teeths in one shot, - one panorama-like image.
This is in contrast to traditional small prints, each containing 3-4
teeth.

Disagree. Even though, Bruce, you've done quite a few of these, I do not find
them overly repetitive. There are some similarities, so you could branch out
a little. But I also think you can still get a lot more out of what you are
doing. You have not exhausted it yet by a long shot.

I find taking a bit of nature and isolating it is a nice way to present
nature. Sort of like the found object thing in art. Makes us appreciate the
simple details of Mother Nature. Makes us LOOK at the details. Savor them.

I vote strongly on the other side. You certainly do not need to stop what you
are doing. As said, you might branch out a bit. In whatever direction you
choose. But I find your presentations bordering on the unique (maybe they are,
but I haven't seen that many other photos except those on this list). Sort of
nature haiku. Or short nature poems. Like a kid picking up a bit of nature.
Grabbing a rock, a leaf, whatever that they find that they like. Hmmm, maybe
branch out with some rocks? Hehehehe. Kids know how to appreciate small nature
details like that. And it's something a lot of us lose. Your stuff reminds me.

So please keep it up.

Generally, I find cat pictures boring. And, yes, most of them are repetitive.
A lot of things are. Ansel Adams shot a bunch of rocks over and over. So
something is a little repetitive. So what?

but the aperture and focus rings work smoothly, There's a very tiny
coating mark in the back element, hardly visible, which doesn't affect
the image quality. As many of you will know, nowadays it is a very
difficult to find lens, and when found, quite expensive. 250 euros.

I took prices directly from BH Photo.

Pentax continues to offer the budget minded A50/2 lens at $70. It's
nowhere near the performance of the f/1.7 and f/1.4 lenses, but it's
 still a good lens.
 So it's also a lot poorer than my A50/1.7? That's a bit
 interesting. The
shop where I bought this lens used a couple of years ago also had an
A50/2.0 in similar condition, and they had actually priced it
 higher...

The A50/2 is definitely an economy offering. I didn't like its
sharpness at all much under f/5.6.

And there is also the A50/1.2, of course, but that's 2-3 times as
expensive as the FA50/1.4, and perhaps doesn't perform quite as well
 besides the higher speed?

Some folks seem to like it a lot. A series only, and probably out of
production although they do seem to continue to show up.

By the way, how about the new(ish) one from Voigtlander/Cosina?
 Some of
their lenses (not sure about the 50mm) seem to have a very good
 reputation...

No experience with any except the Heliar 15mm in Leica Thread Mount,
which was remarkably good for the money.

I have three of them. They reduce transfer speed with Sandisk Ultra
II cards by about 10-15%, otherwise work fine. I have two types: one
type you fit the SD card into the CF card adapter, then the whole
package fits into the CF slot ... allows me to use SD cards in CF
cameras. The other type is only useful with a reader as it hangs a
big multi-card-type slot array outside for use with Memory Stick, SD,
etc.

If you haven't located a source, I'll hunt up where I got these from.

Re: bought an MX - need some advice

2006-06-30 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Any film camera is not a future purchase at this point in time. The
MX is a wonderful camera, reminds me a lot of the Nikon FM I used for
20 years, but it's not something for which to consider a future.

That said, if you enjoy working with film, stock up on your favorite
emulsions and go for it. Be aware that at some point, you'll likely
*need* do learn how to do your own processing as film and
photofinishers start disappearing.

If I buy extra lenses, will they have
any market value in the near future?

The good news is that nearly any lenses you buy for the MX will also
work on a Pentax DSLR. Try to buy Pentax-A series or later lenses,
the DSLRs can use them with more options/features.

Anyway, I am mostly interested in trying street photography and macro.
Currently I have a basic 50mm lens (f1.7), which is not especially
 suited for neither...

Not true, a 50mm lens is very good for both. The Pentax 50/1.7 is a
very good lens for macro with extension tubes, and is also great at
street work.

My favorite for street work is a 35mm or 40mm lens. The Pentax-M 40mm
f/2.8 is a very compact pancake design that works very well for this,
and the current series Pentax-FA35/2 is superb. For me, 28 was never
a great lens on 35mm ... a little too wide in one case, not quite
wide enough in another. I preferred a large step between 35 and, say,
a 20-24mm for ultrawide.

As for macro, I must say I'm somewhat confused. I want to take
 close up
pictures of bugs and flowers and that sort of stuff, and I know I
 need a
macro lens to be able to focus real close, but what kind of focal
distance do I need? I really have a difficult time picturing the field
of view at such close distances.

Get a copy of the book Closeups In Nature by John Shaw. Until you
know more specifically what you want to shoot and what's required,
use extension tubes and your 50mm lens to learn with.

C it does add to the composition.

Here are two very different images. The fox was taken a few years ago
with an LX and my 200 f2.5 scanned to digital. The grass was taken this
week with the istD and the Kiron 105 2.5 macro. Interesting to see what
those old lenses can do on film and digital...

Very nice shots, Vic. The fox is amazing.

The .Mac slideshow requires javascript. If you just want to see the
photos without javascript, the following URLs should work.

Hi Igor, can you point me to a reference about this? I'd be interested
in knowing more about the technical details, like how the music was
represented on the X-ray film, and how it was recorded and retrieved and
stuff like that.
