No, it's a (cutter) ketch. It was built as a tuna troller so a lot of

I remember that one. What every expert called the best viewing time because it
was close to earth turned into a real fisser, just a white smudge in the sky.
I got up early one morning about 2 (4?) months earlier before it rounded the

Congrats on the anniversary. I just passed my 26th.

The lighting looks quite good for a single flash - no obvious hot

The 31 limited is certainly not my idea of a portrait lens, though.

The only problem is that it's not that precise so for ease of set-up
and repeatability I think some kind of copy stand even jerry rigged

Apparently, that's true. Something changed. I know that the computer

Re: Macro stand setup

2007-01-20 Thread David Savage
Maybe also consider a tripod like the Manfrotto 055Pro:

It allows the centre column to be removed and re-mounted horizontally.
It's well suited to macro & copy work & is a bit more versatile than a
dedicated copy stand IMHO.

For lighting, a couple of cheap desk lamps would be good enough
(assuming your shooting digital), as the white balance can be dialed
in to suit the lights.

Wales redux

2007-01-20 Thread Mark Roberts
I spent a large part of my spare time in December fixing up my web
site. Not much that would be visible to the casual observer, but a lot
of code fixes and compatibility improvements. I decided that it would
be poor form to be teaching a course in web design and have students
finding errors in the source code in my own web site ;-)

Now I'm working on updating/improving the photo galleries on the site
(making sure the images are in sRGB and looking just the way I want,
among other things).

I did the Grandfather Mountain page a couple of weeks ago and just
updated the Wales page today. If you want to take a peek, here it is:

Re: K10D ordered and paid!

2007-01-20 Thread Jens Bladt
Tim, your son is much more impottant than anything else.

If you really want a K10D, I suggest you get an assignment photographing -
make your photographs pay for the camera.
I did some photographs for a brewery along with my fellow camera club
memebers.
The owner - an amateut photographer himself - liked my photographs a lot.
He suggested that I should pay a visit to a restaurant near by - and ask
them if they needed some photographs.

Luckily they did. I photographed all thier dishes, the guests, the buffet
etc.
That job paid for 50 % of my K10D :-)
So, I aim to make my hobby pay for it self. I haven't quite succeded yet -
but I will, eventually.

Good luck - and have a nice trip to England too!

A few years ago I bought everything new abroad. My *ist D I got from Foto

I payed considerably less than I would have in a Danish store.
Today things have changed. I can actaully buy from a Danish company (on

This is a totally new thing. A few years ago Danish photodelaer and on-line
dealers could not compete - at all. Now they can :-)
I even saved 50 USD by buying it "locally". I expect www.webfoto.dk has a
better import deal than any other Danish photo dealer :-)

This is what I use. I picked up an enlarger stand from my Univ's
surplus and had a bracket machined to mount the camera. Works great.

Hard to say ... depends on what size print you need to make. 13x19 or
16x20 inch should be no problem. Bigger than that, it depends.

Re: Macro stand setup

2007-01-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I picked up an inexpensive but reasonably sturdy copy stand at a
local store for about $90 two/three years ago. It does the job. I use
a couple of flat-panel light boxes, propped in place with tape and
pieces of cardboard, for lighting. (I already had the light boxes:
they work very well for this.)

Macro/copy stand, particularly with lighting setup is expensive.
I used a cheapest brand name enlarger stand with coarse/fine head height
adjustment (now forgot the name as I no longer have it). It was much
cheaper than a dedicated copy stand. I bought a set of tungsten lamp
lighting stand which fit the stand but eliminated it as I used it with a
diffuser dome so you can use just about any light source. Ideal for small
objects like stamps.
I am sorry I do not have any more meaningful info, but I remember it worked
superbly.

It's a bit overkill, but an enlarger chassis makes a great copy stand, and
should be fairly inexpensive.

Great shot.

There is just a little humorous bit there. Look in the right bottom
corner of the full sized version. There is this container that says
"Maersk Tokyo" in Greek alphabet... Seems like crossing all the
continents in just one sentence ;-).

If I am not mistaken (Jostein, Tim, Dag?) Maersk means "Seafaring" in
Norwegian...

Boris

P.S. Julia doubts that Maersk is Norwegian word.

Macro stand setup

2007-01-20 Thread Micah Kleit
Hello:

Can anyone give me some advice on where to find an affordable macro
stand setup? I know that Novoflex has a terrific magic studio repro,
but that's a little out of my price range. I'm going to be
cataloguing someone's collection of stamps, and I want to have a
setup where I can ensure that the camera and stamp will always be
parallel and at the same distance every shot.

With thanks,

Micah

Great shot.

There is just a little humorous bit there. Look in the right bottom
corner of the full sized version. There is this container that says
"Maersk Tokyo" in Greek alphabet... Seems like crossing all the
continents in just one sentence ;-).

If I am not mistaken (Jostein, Tim, Dag?) Maersk means "Seafaring" in
Norwegian...

Boris

P.S. Julia doubts that Maersk is Norwegian word.

Pixel Pitch Calculation

2007-01-20 Thread K.Takeshita
I encountered this calculation in a Japanese site. There is nothing special
about this itself but I found it interesting that the pixel pitch/area of
K100D is pretty good in relation to FF 5D.
In terms of pixel pitch alone, 4/3 obviously has disadvantage (I know image
quality is not a matter of pixel pitch alone).
Some of the mathematical symbols may not be copying well here (originally in
Japanese) but you get an idea.

Ken

Calculation of pixel pitch

fr= focal length at wide end
ff= 35mm equivalent focal length at wide end
a= aspect ratio, 3/4=0.75 or 2/3=0.66
p = effective pixel count
diagonal length of image in mm d=43.3×fr÷ff
image width w=√(d^2÷(a^2+1))
area per pixel a=w×w÷p
pixel pitch =√aw×w÷p
area =√(a×d^2÷(a^2+1)÷p)

Example of Calculation

1. Fuji Finepix F10 fr=8.0 ff=36.0 a=0.75 p=630 pixel d=43.3×8
÷36=9.62mm w^2=92.587÷1.5625=59.25568 pitch=√(0.75×59.25568
÷630)=2.65 micron. area 7.02 square micron

2. Olympus μdigital 800 fr=8.0 ff=38.0 a=0.75 p=800 pixel
d=43.3×8÷38=9.12mm w^2=83.1÷1.5625=53.18 pitch=√(0.75×53.18
÷800)=2.21 micron. area 4.88 square micron

3. Olympus E-330 a=0.75 p=750 pixel d=21.6mm w^2=468.29÷1.5625
=299.7 pitch=√(0.75×299.7÷750)=5.47 micron. area 29.9 square
micron

4.Olympus E-500 a=0.75 p=800 pixel d=21.64mm w^2=468.29÷1.5625
=299.7 pitch=√(0.75×299.7÷800)=5.30 micron. area 28.1 square
micron

5. Canon EOSKissDigitalN a=0. p=800 pixel d=26.68mm w^2=711.88
÷1.=492.855 pitch=√(0.×492.855÷800)=6.40 micron. area
41.0 square micron

6. Pentax K100D a=0.6676 p=610 pixel d=√(23.5^2+15.7^2)=28.26mm w
=23.5mm pitch=√(23.5×15.7÷610)=7.78 micron. area 60.48 square
micron

7. Canon EOS5D a=0.6676 p=1280 pixel d=43.04mm w^2=1852.44
÷1.44569=1281.35 pitch=√(0.6676×1281.35÷1280)=8.17 micron. area
66.8 square micron

Scrapbooking with Henry

2007-01-20 Thread Bob W
Henri Cartier-Bresson described his scrapbook as his most precious
possession. It has recently been recreated and published as part of a
book imaginatively called "Scrapbook".

I bought a copy today, and although I haven't come close to looking at
all of it, I can recommend it. It includes a number of very
interesting biographical essays, but the particular aspect I'm
enjoying is the number of previously unpublished photographs it
includes. As well as new photos there are many variants of well-known
photographs, giving us some insight into his thinking as he took the
photos. Many of them appear to be reproduced from his own original
prints, which are fascinating to look at in their own right. There are
also tearsheets of articles about him, and articles showing his
pictures in published contexts, as well as bits and pieces
representing some of his influences. A very worthwhile book for fans.

I hope you enjoy being a stay at home parent. It is both rewarding and can
cause several types of insanity. I am currently on maternity leave, with a

every development, every new experience they have, I get to see. It is also

causing me to crave adult companionship and so I turned to this list - and
then turned back to watching Blue's Clues with my son. I think he is more

RE: Praising K10D performance even with limitations

2007-01-20 Thread Markus Maurer
A minimum distance of 1.5 -2 meters would have helped here :-)
But even the newspapers here like to photograph people from less distance
and make them look "a bit comical"
greetings

Boris,
Light looks ideal to me.
If I knew you better I might be tempted to remark about the terrible
distortion produced by the lens...but perhaps I shouldn't. :-))
Congratulations on your anniversary!

I too would like to know about the diffuser. Have an AF220T. works well
enough with the red and green auto modes but would like to add this little
trick as well.

Re: OT: Anyone heard from our friends in the Northern Europe?

2007-01-20 Thread Cotty
On 20/1/07, David Savage, discombobulated, unleashed:

Dah. Storm in a teacup. Winds peaked at 99 mph off the Needles.
Gusts to about 80 or so in exposed places inland in southern England.
We're lucky, it's nothing like a real hurricane, and very infrequent at
these speeds. Winter gales gust to 60 regularly, but that's no problem.
Atlantic low pressure systems scud in from a south-westerly direction so
the air is damp and mild with temps peaking at 14C.

We had a few killed by falling walls and trees. One was in a car that
was flattened down the road in Berkshire. Tragic, he was in his thirties
leaving a pregnant wife and young child. Otherwise, power lines down - I
was filming repair crews yesterday putting up new poles in a forest.
Still a few thousand not back on the grid yet, they'll all be on by
Sunday night.

We've had a rapid succession of lows rumbling through for weeks, but now
a big high is taking up position, bringing Arctic air down on its
eastern flank, so we can expect snow showers in the British Isles for a
while. Some will wake to a couple of cm tomorrow, which will be nice,
but bring the country to a halt. We are the worst nation in the world
for preparing for it.

Join me in a few minutes for the full forecast :-)

Cheers,
  Cotty
