It's just differences in how the cards format. Much like two
different hard drives of the same nominal capacity, you'll often seen
a couple meg difference in their formatted capacity.

Hi Markus,

You may be able to make it look more realistic to your eye by applying
the curves tool. However from the perspective of a viewer that was not
there when the shot was made it looks very good compared to the vast
majority of HDR output that I've seen. Very nice.

thanks for the tip. It looks like this lens won't
work ( mamiya 55mm F1.8) because the hole that
would need to be drilled in the lens's flange
would be interfering with the lens's aperture
setting ring movement. drats! Seems like you said,
this can only be done on M42 lenses that have
large diameter flanges at the mount

It would depend on which lens you were trying to permanently adapt.
Something like the SMCT 135 f2.5 with it's large base would be
possible. Remove the spring from the adapter that locks it into the
camera body. I don't have an adapter available but I think the tapped
hole for the screw that holds that spring goes entirely through the
adapter, if so you can simply get a screw with the same thread that's
slightly longer to hold the adapter in place. Next mount the lens on
the camera and mark where the lens lock falls on the lens body. Drill a

small hole to match that location. If the lens has an A/M switch you're

all set. Otherwise you'll have to find a way to keep the stop down pin
in place, (a dab of super glue would work).

I know that you didn't intend to sound condescending ;-) however
images made by "real" photographers with "good" exposures can also be
affected by VPN. If you haven't had it bite you, then good for you, I

Juan, you're not being attentive to the list lately ;-). I asked just
the same question (except that it was 60 vs 61 images for 1 GB card)
some days ago. Apparently the PEF file size varies from 8 MB to 14 MB
depending on the shot. Thus on average you gain order of 3 MB per a
single shot. On 1 GB card in PEF mode I manage to get approx 70 shots.

I do have an M6, with a Summicron 50, a Voigtlander 28/3.5, and a
Jupiter 35/2.8. And I still use it, lately I've been shooting color
film with it so I can have almost the same b&w workflow as I use with
digital.

The M6 is the camera I 'learned' to do street photography with, that's
why the M8 would be perfect.
The RD-1 I'm not so sure about--it seems to have had some QC issues,
plus frankly, I think it is less bang for the buck than the M8.

Thanks everybody for the answers! I'll let you know what I decide...

I agree with you. A picture of nothing in complete darkness with the
highest ISO may either mean you're an astronomer or you have a badly
exposed photo...in which case, the VPN is the least of your problems.

Re: Pixel peeping and looking for defects (was Re: Full frame lenses and the K10D, CA anyone?)

2007-04-13 Thread Brendan MacRae
Good point, Mark.

In fact, I could really care less about it except that
I've had some rejections because of it. Now, are the
inspectors looking past 100%? I have no idea, but
probably so.

For my own peace of mind, I'm trying to get to the
bottom of something that will, in the end, make me a
more competent "fixer" of images, as opposed to let's
say, a better photographer. It is, unfortunately, part
and parcel of the digital capture world in which we
wish to function.

To go little further with this, I have been reading a
few Photoshop books and visiting forums recently and
I've come away with the feeling that Photoshop, as
great and wonderful a tool as it is, is also the bane
of my existence. It is not really a photographer's
tool; it is a designers tool. Probably 80% of what PS
can do I want absolutely no part of. I cringe at even
needing to learn the 20% I MUST learn. But forge ahead
I will.

So, your point is very well received. I would so much
rather be out shooting. But if I want to move forward
with my images I have to dig a bit deeper into some of
the mundane issues that I would normally ignore with
pleasure.

Re: converting a M42 lens to PK mount?

2007-04-13 Thread P. J. Alling

Pixel peeping and looking for defects (was Re: Full frame lenses and the K10D, CA anyone?)

2007-04-13 Thread Mark Erickson
Brendan's post and the response bring up an interesting issue that seems to
increasingly dominate the digital photography world--pixel peeping and
hunting for defects. It is easy to zoom up to 200% and tear apart an image,
but how much of the defects we observe will actually show up in real world
applications?

For example, the DPReview Pentax SLR forum has had several VPN (vertical
pattern noise) threads lately. Basically, if you crank the ISO way up,
shoot in very low light, then amplify the shadow areas in Photoshop you'll
see patterns in the noise. My *ist-Ds does it, but I never noticed it until
I went looking for it. My ultimate conclusion is, "So what?" It's like the
old joke where the patient says, "Doctor, it hurts when I do ," and the
doctor responds, "So don't do ".

I know that blooming and CA can be pretty obvious in certain situations
(e.g., backlit tree branches in winter). In less contrasty cases, you may
be able to find it if you go looking for it. If it's not obtrusive,
however, why worry so much about it?

Just a thought

What it did was minimize it to the point where viewed
full size it's no longer really noticeable. As you
would expect, some of the lenses fared better than
others. On the A50 f1.4, for instance, f8 was where it effectively
disappeared, at f5.6 it was OK (same for the A*85 f1.4 and the zoom). On
the FA31 Ltd it was "gone" by f4...no real surprise as this lens excels
in nearly every dept.

Re: Full frame lenses and the K10D, CA anyone?

2007-04-13 Thread Boris Liberman
Brendan, I'm living in a very sunny country and I am shooting in all
times of day. The only lens that gives me really visible CA is 80-320.
All others (31, 43, 50/1.7, 77, 28-105, 17-35 FE, FAJ 18-35, Tamron
28-75, F 80-200/4.7-5.6, Sigma 18/3.5) don't produce any CA that would
really affect my judgment while choosing the lens or taking the shot. In
fact, I thought they were CA free until I stumbled on 80-320. And even
80-320 is not really that bad.

With all due respect I seriously think you're paying too much attention
to this issue.

Cheers.

2007-04-13 Thread Boris Liberman
Juan, I've been wondering for a long time why don't you shoot range
finder. It is so much fits your style.

I cannot say much for M8, but if you could still use film, I think it
would be preferable. I honestly think M8 was served not fully cooked, so
to say.

Otherwise - if you can - go for it. You have "Japanese Leica" (Pentax)
and you'll have real one too ;-).

Or you can buy this Epson camera (R-D1 or something) which is way
cheaper and probably quite good enough.

What it did was minimize it to the point where viewed
full size it's no longer really noticeable. As you
would expect, some of the lenses fared better than
others. On the A50 f1.4, for instance, f8 was where it
effectively disappeared, at f5.6 it was OK (same for
the A*85 f1.4 and the zoom). On the FA31 Ltd it was
"gone" by f4...no real surprise as this lens excels in
nearly every dept.

You may be seeming sensor bloom not CA as CA is pretty much able to be
eliminated using the ACR lens tab adjustment tool and it only takes a
few seconds (hint, set the image view to 100% or more, head for an
image corner and hold the ALT key down whilst adjusting the either of
the sliders).

Blooming can be exacerbated by applying excessive sharpening at the
RAW conversion phase.

When CA is the problem, ACR can fix it. But in most digital images,
what you're seeing is not CA, it's fringing. You can fix it with
"replace color" and the clone tool. A bit more work than a quick-fix
CA correction but worth the effort most of the time.

Color fringing in areas of high contrast is endemic to digital
sensors. But most of what you see is not CA. It's fringing, and it's
a different animal. You can still fix it quite easily but not with
the CA adjustments in ACR.

Shooting wide open is a nightmare for me. Is anyone
else seeing this issue? Is it endemic with film lenses
plus the smaller sensors? It can't stricly be a
function of older glass since I have seen ED IF lenses
having the same trouble on the K10D. Perhaps only the

I tested the FA31 Ltd, the A*85 f1.4, the A50 1.4, and
the FA 24-90 today, all wide open, RAW, ISO 100, and
all of them were showing some amount of color
fringing. It didn't go away until 2-3 stops beyond
wide open on any of these lenses. I'm wasting time
trying to fix the problem every time I shoot for
shallow DOF. Would a full frame sensor make any
difference in this regard?

How do the DA lenses handle this? Are they free of CA
wide open? One hopes as I have my eye on the DA10-17mm

It's endemic with most lenses, digital sensors just tend to exacerbate
the problem, different coatings would make little difference as the
source is lens aberrations. Fortunately CA is also easy to manage when
post processing RAW images.

A FF sensor would likely make the CA more apparent as the angle of
incidence would be more acute towards the edges and the lenses will
exhibit more distortion towards the edges.

Hi Jan,

It works! I managed to upload something and the one on hold got

Transcend 150x SD cards in 2G capacity are now $21 in the US. Sandisk
Ultra IIs are about $28, Extreme IIIs about $39. At least in the US,
there's no sensible reason not to buy the best there is.

FS: Tripod

2007-04-13 Thread John Celio
For Sale: Promaster SystemPro 1 Professional Tripod

I've owned these legs for about two or three years now. They're good,
sturdy legs for just about any size camera, though you will need to get a
head for it.

It shows some signs of use, such as scratches around the leg locks and other
parts, but there is no other damage to the tripod. I replaced the original
center column years ago with the shorter one Promaster made as an accessory
(primarily to reduce weight), but can't find the original one any more.

Features:

- Sturdy aluminum alloy construction
- 3 leg angle settings for shooting versatility
- Quick release leg locks for rapid setup and adjustment
- Self leveling feet with retractable spikes (also good for spearing fish or
fending off attackers)
- Padded hand/shoulder grips on two of the legs for added comfort
- Maximum Height (center column extended): 55" (with current center column)

>From Promaster's website:
http://tinyurl.com/dnxcr

A poorly-edited photo of my personal tripod-inspector:
http://www.neovenator.com/special/tripod_inspector.jpg

Price: US $57 obo
Shipping: I'm *guessing* US shipping will be in the $15-$20 range, but I'm
not sure of the final package weight. If you give me your address, I can
give you a more accurate cost next time I'm at work. Same goes for
international
shipping, but I'm sure it'll cost more.

Thanks,
John

FS: Lightning-fast Delkin CardBus 32 CF PCMCIA reader

2007-04-13 Thread John Celio
For Sale: Delkin Cardbus 32 adapter for CF cards

If your computer has a PCMCIA card slot (very common on most laptops), this
adapter is the fastest way
I've found for downloading your data off of Compact Flash (I & II)cards.

Delkin's site:
http://www.delkin.com/products/adapters/cardbus/

The item for sale is a couple years old, but is in excellent condition. It
has lived in my laptop's PC slot pretty much since the day I got it.

When it came out, I tested the speed of this device compared to a USB 2
reader (SanDisk 8-in-1) and a standard PCMCIA reader (cheap Lexar model).
The Cardbus 32 adapter was many times faster than the cheap PCMCIA reader,
and also faster than the USB 2 reader. I can't remember the specific
results, but I bought the reader that day after seeing how well it
performed.

Price: US $37 obo
Shipping in the US should be $6 to $9 (I charge actual shipping, so if it's
less I'll give you a refund). For international shipping, give me your
address and I'll find out the cost.

Only the adapter is included in this sale. I lost the original plastic
case, and drivers are available from Delkin's website.

Thanks!

Well, I'm happy for you that your idiot is getting punished, at least. It's
been almost 16 months since my old Mustang was smashed up, and the fucking
kid has wormed his way out of everything I've done so far. He even got a
judge to force me to accept a payment agreement so he could have his license
unsuspended. Of course, he missed the first payment right off the bat, so
now I'm looking into my options again.

Good luck finding decent replacement wheels! I know how hard that can be on
a tight budget.

If you get it, won't you have to use those special filters Leica is giving
out to deal with the IR sensitivity issue? I don't know if you have other
Leica lenses, but I'd hate to have to switch the filter from lens to lens as
I change them.

On the other hand, I'd love to own a Leica rangefinder, too. I got to use
an M6 for a weekend back at my last job, and really enjoyed it.

Juan, have you ever been to the Leica Boutique at Camera West in Monterey?
If you're ever down that way, you MUST see it. It's heaven for Leica fans.

As some of you know, I've been missing my Leica rangefinder since I
returned to Pentax in 2004 with an istD.

Now, I wasn't really thinking seriously about buying an M8 until
today, when two things happened: I realized I'm getting a nice tax
refund that I wasn't counting on (I know, it was my money all the
time, but still), and I saw the camera, in stock at K&S in Palo Alto
(I won't buy there btw, they always treat me pretty badly.)

Please, help me save $5000 and stay on the Pentax side...

Or, help me rationalize this crazy purchase :)

OT: Photos & Sentencing

2007-04-13 Thread dglenn
OT because they were shot with my non-Pentax digital p&s
(the Pentax photos still haven't been developed yet):

The idjit who totaled my car went to trial yesterday, and I
got a phone call from the Assistant State's Attorney handling
the case afterward. She said the photos I gave her on a CD
last month, which she printed out and introduced as evidence,
were a factor in the judge's decision to impose the maximum
possible penalty for the crimes the fellow was convicted of.
"Oh. Those cars were _crushed_!"

I'd been subpoenaed as a witness, as were several neighbours,
but when we were in court last month to hear the guy request
a postponement, the judge told us this time we'd be "on call"
witnesses -- didn't have to show up unless the State's
Attorney called us, just had to stay near a phone and within
an hour's travel of the courthouse yesterday. I'd wondered
what we could add as witnesses other than showing a large
number of faces to illustrate how many victims there were;
as it turned out we were not called in to court yesterday.

But I feel like I was helpful anyhow.

(Note that the maximum penalty was only sixty days, and
I'm still out of a car, but at least the idiot is actually
getting punished. Hey, anyone got a spare car that'll
carry a double bass and pass Maryland inspection, for
under $1400? (That's what the insurance company gave me
for my car.))

, if anybody's curious.

That's interesting. I've had this problem ever since I started uploading
images (I'm uploading and editing with Firefox). The screen always darkens and
locks when I click on the 'Edit Info' link. I found the solution is to right
click on the 'Edit Info' link and then choose "Open in new Tab'. The editing
page then opens OK in the new tab.

I just tried it now and it's still showing this behaviour.

I never bothered to report it as I assumed it was something that would be
worked out during the Beta testing. Pehaps I should report it.

Hard to say. There do seem to be a rash of Sandisk Ultra II fakes on
the market these days at very low prices.

GESO - Park Sorek

2007-04-13 Thread Walter Hamler
Boris, the presentation is very good. I like.
The biggest reason I like these types of photographs from you and others
that do similar work is the insights I get into where you live and sometimes
how you live. I did not respond to the pics you posted on the auto show and
bikes, but I thoroughly enjoyed them for the foregoing reason. I was frankly
surprised that those sort of events would be common in Israel. Don't know
why I felt that way, as I have travelled a lot in my life and find a lot of
familiar stuff no matter where I go. I guess the solution is to visit that
part of the world and get my mind cleansed :-)

I remember selling those cameras when I had a job at a camera shop in
my first couple of years of college... !

The auto-flash-by-coupled-GN was popular on a number of cameras at
the time as auto-flash units (with light sensors and quench circuits
built in) didn't become common or popular for another few years.
Nikon even made a neat little lens, the Nikkor-GN 45/2.8, that did
this for their SLR line. It is a very effective way to get good flash
exposure. My Olympus Pen E series cameras all have this system as well.

Fun stuff. Now load up some fast film and go low light shooting. It's
amazing what can be done with 1/30 second, ASA400 film and an f/2.8
lens...

Re: Stupid Lightroom bug (importing pics)

2007-04-13 Thread Thibouille
I checked: with Import and it is OK. I now figured out it happended in
Auto Import and not in normal Import. Will test more and report back.

Edit: it happens in the Settings for Auto Import, when I modify
filenaming settings and add the date (JJMM) it adds 13042038.I
suspect a little bug.

I used normal import and all went well it seems but I will check if it
just shows wringly but acts OK or if it acts wrongly as well.

Transcend 150x SD cards in 2G capacity are now $21 in the US. Sandisk
Ultra IIs are about $28, Extreme IIIs about $39. At least in the US,
there's no sensible reason not to buy the best there is.

Most likely a card error. If you can see the image on the LCD, then
the embedded JPEG preview is ok, but the RAW data written to the file
is corrupted.

Assuming it only happened with this card, test with another card then
take this card back for a refund.
