Hi Amita,

I definitely wouldn't get it repaired, I would cite the fact that is
has this problem in any pending sale however I would indicate what
Pentax want to charge. I'm sure their quote is over the top. The unit
is probably a little corroded but as it still works I would suggest
that a clean and contact treatment by someone who knows what they are
doing would likely halt further degradation.

This wasn't really an event but some silly outbursts which were
restricted to one identifiable thread in reality (sorry Ann).

I'm pretty pleased that Doug has set up the list as he has and yes the
demeanor of the list does rely upon self moderation to a degree but it
also relies upon tolerance and self control, neither of which
necessarily require any party to withdraw from any particular threads
or the list or refrain from communicating with any particular lister.
The way that each lister manages their interaction with the list and
its subscribers is up to them.

Markus seemed a little perturbed that he had not received feedback on
his photograph but there's no reason to blame that on another thread
nor Pauls issue regarding missing personal communications. All sort of
people have left the list over the many years I've been here citing
all sorts of issues, my favorite parting comments being "if xx doesn't
stop yy then I'll unsubscribe". If they like the place they will come
back.

Me too - I couldn't cope otherwise. When I get too far behind I just dump the

not sure that I'm able to block a specific thread. And it's been one thread

I would not have the repair done. Live with the stickiness, or perhaps some

Well, selling it "as is" you know it will likely fail at some point
due to corrosion. So if you're going to sell it, you should disclose
its condition, which will hurt the sale price. Completed auctions on
*ist D "body only" are running around $250-300 at present.

would you get this repair done?

2007-04-20 Thread Amita Guha
I have decided to sell my *istD, but it was due for a cleaning, so I
sent it to CO for a CLA. I mentioned that it had gotten some salt
spray on it and that the power switch was a little sticky as a result.
Their estimate is for $271, to "repair or replace internal electronics
and mechanisms due to corrosion" and "replacement of circuit boards
and/or image sensor". Basically it sounds like they're going to
rebuild the entire camera. Now I'm trying to figure out if it's worth
it to do the repair, since I only want to sell it anyway. What would
you guys do in my situation? The body seems to be working fine, except
for the stickiness.

Thanks,
Amita

NO, it wont prevent ALL illegal sales or importation from
occuring (its not clear to me which or if both may be
illegal in some way) but it would prevent the
large chains from selling them wouldn't it? They dont
do gray or black market stuff which is what these would
be if it's not legal to sell these non region coded 1 players

Well obviously I'm not a resident of the US so I'm not sure of what you
mean when you refer to "the major retailers" but it's fact that there
are a lot of retailers within the US that do sell non-region coded DVD
players. Whether they are breaking laws in doing so surely is up to the

Well, no - I certainly wouldn't.

If I decide that a TV show is something I want to watch, then
I take reasonable precautions to make sure the recording will take
place. Given the number of $K I've spent on A/V equipment, an extra
$150 or so on a battery backup to tide me over the vagaries of power
supplied by PG&E doesn't seem unreasonable.

FS: various Pentax lenses

2007-04-20 Thread Stan Halpin
I am selling the following lenses:
A 20/2.8 ???
K 24/2.8 $275
K 35/2.0 ???
A 100/2.8 macro ???
M 120/2.8 $145
DA 16-45 $275
FA 20-35 ???
and
Vivitar MC 100/3.5 macro $50

The listed prices are my best guess at value based on what I paid,
minimal info from recent eBay and KEH listings, and two glasses of
wine. Shipping not included. For the ones marked with ???, I have a
general price point in mind but am less confident on the "right" price.

Anything not spoken for here in the next few days will go on eBay in
a week of so with the above prices as the reserve price.

All are in very good condition, the newer ones have the original
boxes etc.
The Vivitar is one I bought to have an alternative 100mm macro that I
could throw in the bag (unlike the PK-A-100/2.8 which I have always
treated like a jewel.) Haven't used it that much...

Am also considering selling my *ist-D with battery grip. Though I do
find it nice to have two camera bodies to use. If I sell the *ist-D,
I might have to buy another K10D.

Contact me off list.

Ann,

The smugmug site prevents printing direct from the web browser or
capturing the image to disk as an http download, but if you don't
care about quality or just want to use a photo on a web page, you can
use anything that captures the pixels off the screen and writes them
into a file. (There are a ton of utilities that do this for

doing it built into the OS.)

It's very hard to completely secure anything ...

just post much later that all the posts

I wouldn't know. I've not made my position (on the matter of regional
DVD lock out) public if you check back over what I've written.

Some reading pertinent to the region lock discussions (if you can be bothered):

http://www.ipjustice.org/eucd012903.shtml

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_lockout#Legal_design

If you aren't interested in reading then I'll make it easy for you.;
what it boils down to is that the DVD producing cartel in the U.S.
were instrumental in pushing though the U.S. Digital Millennium
Copyright Act (DMCA) which through convoluted logic can be used to
prevent users circumventing regional lock out codes on their personal
DVD players. However this legislation effectively flies in the the
face of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
International Copyright Treaty to which the US is an active member.

Yes, it is really tiny. The closest modern counterpart (the FA
77/1.8 Limited) is almost, but not quite, as small. Of course the
FA has autofocus, so Pentax did their usual fine job of
miniaturization to get it as close to the M85 in size and weight as
they did. All metal too!

M85: 63mm x 46mm, 250 g
FA77: 64mm x 48mm, 270 g

No seriously. I think you have a problem understanding what is legal
and
illegal.

I think it's legal to buy a multi-region DVD player in the USA. I think

it's legal for an individual to reprogram a region 1 player to be a
multi-region player in the USA.

I think it would be illegal to make copies of copyrighted material for
other
than personal viewing. It would be illegal to distribute them without
prior
permission by the owner(s).

I don't mind being wrong. I'm wrong often (that's often as in

it.

DUH, I wasnt repeatedly contending it wasnt legal to **buy** a non-
region 1 DVD player in the USA, I repeatedly
made the contention that its illegal to **sell** them
here and also stated repeatedly that's
mostly likely why none of the USA major retailers
sell them. YOU counter argued that they dont
sell them because there isnt demand for them
not because it isnt legal to sell them. NOW
you are changing your positon to say its not
illegal to **buy** them which does not address
my repeated contention or your insistance why the
major sellers dont sell them. You are trying
to argue buying now when we were discussing
SELLING them.

"All DVD Players shipped in the USA must be set to Region 1. It is not
legal

are you really trying to say that you think the above statement
doesnt say or mean that its not legal to ship anything other
than region 1 DVD players that are not changeable by the
user to the USA? (shipped "in" is vague, it probably means shipped "to")

I never said you cant modify a player yourself, I said my continued
contention was that
I didnt believe that it was legal to **sell** non region 1 DVD players
in
the USA and thats exactly what the above statement is
saying the way it reads. like I said above the reason why circuit
city and best buy and the like dont sell these is most
likely because the above quote is TRUE (assuming shipped to) and because
they
dont sell illegally imported items.

Read it CAREFULLY.

All DVD Players shipped in the USA must be set to Region 1. It is not
legal
for the manufacturer to provide information or any other means of
changing
the region code to allow the playback of DVD's from other regions.

Let me help you parse these two simple sentences John.

Sentence 1:

"All DVD Players shipped in the USA must be set to Region 1".

Set to Region 1. It doesn't say you can't change it from region 1. So
guess
what? When I bought my multi-region DVD player it was set to Region 1.
HAHAHAHA!

Sentence 2:

"It is not legal for the manufacturer to provide information or any
other
means of changing the region code to allow the playback of DVD's from
other
regions"

Manufacturer to provide. If someone besides the manufacturer provides
it,
it's not illegal. HAHAHAHA!

Your reasoning that it's illegal because Circuit City and Best Buy
doesn't
sell them is foolish, foolish, foolish. They also don't sell multi-color

flashing LED underwear, but it doesn't mean it's illegal to sell or buy
them.

RE: OT - for those of youwho haveDVD equipthat can playPAL systemDVD's

2007-04-20 Thread Tom C
No seriously. I think you have a problem understanding what is legal and
illegal.

I think it's legal to buy a multi-region DVD player in the USA. I think
it's legal for an individual to reprogram a region 1 player to be a
multi-region player in the USA.

I think it would be illegal to make copies of copyrighted material for other
than personal viewing. It would be illegal to distribute them without prior
permission by the owner(s).

I don't mind being wrong. I'm wrong often (that's often as in frequently)...
a little takeoff on a Gilbert & Sullivan line. When I'm wrong I admit it.

2007-04-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hallo Paul,

Well, I've tried all possible combinations now. Far as I can see,
there is a marginal gain in sharpness going from + to 0 setting, and
no further improvement happens by removing the feet. Probably unit-to-
unit variations account for this.

Dolphins v Chargers 12/19/99 Marino's last home win

These DirectTV HDDVR (HR-700)

reboot fully before the picture
comes back. Its a quite annoying wait
if you didnt want or need to reboot.
And even worse problem if you were in the

Re: Size Sells?

2007-04-20 Thread Mark Cassino
Thanks, Marnie. It was cold and (obviously)windy to boot. Early January.

The thing I remember about that shot was a kid - maybe 11 or 12 years
old - who came up to me and asked for money. He was wearing only a
windbreaker and was shivering violently. I gave him $10 and he ran off.

FWIW - the shot was taken with a tripod mounted A* 400 f2.8 and Pz-1p
camera on Kodak E100S slide film. The roll of film got splashed with
bleach in the lab so there is a burn in the sky right of the lighthouse
that I had to touch up with Photoshop. One thing I like about digital -
no lab horror stories!

John,

I don't mean to change the subject but I'm looking for a few old football
games that I'd like to rewatch. I'm sure the NFL won't mind. I'm looking
for:

Dolphins v Bears 12/2/85
Dolphins v Bills 10/4/92
1993 Pro Bowl 2/7/93
Dolphins v Eagles 11/14/93
Dolphins v Cowboys 11/93
Dolphins v Chiefs 12/31/94 Marino v Montana PLAYOFF
Dolphins v Chargers 12/19/99 Marino’s last home win
Dolphins v Falcons 12/30/01 Great Defensive Game
Dolphins v Broncos 10/13/02

The only caveat is the dish electronics ( I forget
the name of it, its some sort of RF amp or

for the SAT receiver/DVR to have a good signal to

What's "wow" about that?  I'm sure many of us use a UPS for our PCs;
I've got one that's earmarked to be put on my DirecTV TiVo boxes the
next time I power down the A/V rack. That way I'll be able to record
shows even if there's a power dropout. I won't be able to watch them
until the power comes back, of course, but that's not the time-critical
step.

Re: Worst Bokeh ever in a non-mirror Pentax Lens?

2007-04-20 Thread Mark Cassino
The A* 400 f2.8 can produce some horrendous bokeh too.

Near out of focus elements can look really bad. I tested it by focusing
in on an isolated subject - like a single grass stalk - and the slowly
de-focusing by moving the focal point closer. The image would initially
split into two softer versions of itself which would then ultimately
blur out into a pleasing bokeh. But if you got a bunch of stuff in that
"split in two" range the bokeh would look like a mess.

A couple of examples of bad bokeh -

http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/birds/b0009.htm
http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/birds/0204b59.htm

One the flip side - it can produce a nice bokeh and sometimes a
distinctive one in some lighting situations.

Nice:

http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/birds/0308b18.htm
http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/new/lis082.htm

Distinctive:

http://www.markcassino.com/galleries/birds/0204b49.htm

Your sample is a pretty high contrast harsh light situation - perhaps
the bokeh would look better in more moderate light, different distance
for the out of focus background etc.

Read it CAREFULLY.

All DVD Players shipped in the USA must be set to Region 1. It is not legal
for the manufacturer to provide information or any other means of changing
the region code to allow the playback of DVD's from other regions.

Let me help you parse these two simple sentences John.

Sentence 1:

"All DVD Players shipped in the USA must be set to Region 1".

Set to Region 1. It doesn't say you can't change it from region 1. So guess
what? When I bought my multi-region DVD player it was set to Region 1.
HAHAHAHA!

Sentence 2:

"It is not legal for the manufacturer to provide information or any other
means of changing the region code to allow the playback of DVD's from other
regions"

Manufacturer to provide. If someone besides the manufacturer provides it,
it's not illegal. HAHAHAHA!

Your reasoning that it's illegal because Circuit City and Best Buy doesn't
sell them is foolish, foolish, foolish. They also don't sell multi-color
flashing LED underwear, but it doesn't mean it's illegal to sell or buy
them.

Yup, when you are using a SAT receiver
your DVR recordings can still go on during short
power dropouts with a UPS if the dish
electronics still have power. It's really most useful
for short AC power glitches which might have
caused the HDDVR to do VERY unwanted system reboots
while watching or recording shows.

I didn't remember where this was or taking it at all. My negative

that in mind. Many on list have found it a good way to do some home brewed
moderation.

Re: Epson V700 resolution tests - 645 film

2007-04-20 Thread Jack Davis
Well, it's been done to death, I know. The web will, also, give one
about all they can stand.
The reason it's been done and is being done is because of irrepressible
curiosity about camera and process comparisons.
I don't think I need to explain "what I'm trying to see" and I accept
that your tests were for something altogether different.
I'm ready to move on, Godfrey. ;-))
