RE: Firmware 1.10
Godfrey, Sadly I think they were optimists as I took identical condition images before and after the update from v1.1 to v1.2 and sadly I could see no significant difference. I was actually pursuing minor VPN noise that I can only clearly display IF I underexpose by two stops and then push 2 stops in RAW development - In other words RIDICULOUS conditions. Re: Firmware 1.10
Since I've never seen any of the noise problem with my K10D .. and evaluating grossly underexposed and misprocessed exposures intended to exaggerate noise seems to me a total waste of time ... Re: Firmware 1.10
My tests showed the K10D has an increasing tendency to overexpose in the 'Manual/green button stop-down metering' mode as the metering operated with the lens opening moving away from wide open. However, the metering error is predictable and can be adjusted for. Furthermore, you can use the Digital Preview with Histogram display to see what the camera has set and perform a correction, no need for a hand held meter. So while it's inconvenient, I wouldn't say that K/M lenses are unusable. It just takes a bit more time and effort to use them to best effect. Godfrey On Apr 30, 2007, at 6:25 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I use K and M lenses regularly on my K10D. Paul -- Original message -- From: Bob Rapp [EMAIL PROTECTED] The reason for the post is that using K and M series lenses on the K10D yield images that are generally overexposed. I have a large number of K lenses that I would love to use with the camera. I was hoping the new firmware would correct or minimise the exposure errors. Bridge is not an organizer and has no ability to manage data that is on an off-line volume. Bridge is a browser and workflow/automation coordinator for the Adobe Creative Suite. Album was never available on Mac OS X anyway so that was never an option for me. Lightroom works exceptionally well as the center of your photographic workflow. It handles import, renaming, organizing (combining into sets, sorting and grading, etc), metadata editing, global editing (cropping, rotation, tonal rendering) and limited spot correction, integrates beautifully with Photoshop CSx and other external editors for higher-level selective editing, and has excellent tools for slide show and print output. It also does web site output although I find its facilities there a little weaker than the rest. I use it extensively, every day, and the more I use it and uncover its subtleties, the more I like it. Macro- merely means large. So any image that is larger than normal is a macrophotograph. That said, usually people consider the macro range to be 1/5 to 5 times actual size. Isn't macro photography supposed to be enlarging the subject? On a computer screen my 3872 pixel would look like 1366 mm. That's an enlarement of appr. 2900% (almost 30 times). Re: Spotmatic - focusing
I never liked microprism focusing aids very much. The Pentax Spotmatic had a good viewfinder, regardless, although not quite as good as the Nikon F I bought in 1969, which had a type A screen as standard (plain matte fresnel with central split-image) and replaced it with an E screen almost immediately (plain matte fresnel with 'thirds' horizontal/vertical reference scribings). That remains my favorite focusing surface today. The only 35mm SLR viewfinder system that I liked more of the ones I had was the Nikon F3/T with hp focusing head. The K10D viewfinder system reminds me very much of that Nikon. I just wish I could get an E screen for it ... the LL-80 has too many markings for AF and such, seems cluttered to my eye like the LL60 for the *ist DS. Re: Capture One Pro vs.......
I have been a Capture One LE user for a couple of years and have used Lightroom and also own Silkypix. The two areas of Lightroom that were problematic for me were - SPEED - Lightroom is quite resource intensive and I found the overall speed to not be to my liking. This is not to say that it was totally slow on my system, but compared to alternatives, it is slow. The other area that I don't care for in Lightroom is the heavy handed organization that is imposes. For many, this could be considered one of it's best features. For me, who shoots lots of events, weddings and portraits, it gets in the way. I have other programs that I use for those duties including Breezebrowser and ExpressDigital's Darkroom. So what I am saying is, if speed is not an issue for you, and you like the organizational tools, then you would be hard pressed to find a better tool. -- Bruce Monday, April 30, 2007, 3:28:26 AM, you wrote: PG With the availability of Capture One for the K10D it would be PG interesting to see how it stacks up against the other options eg. Re: lightroom comments
Hello Godfrey, Good information. Yes, much of my organizational comments were based on beta. I have run the release version but not much compared to the beta. A big area for me is that the ExpressDigital Darkroom product does much the same kind of thing as Lightroom - and Darkroom handles all of my online ordering system along with direct connection to the lab, etc. A much more needed tool for me than the raw converter. So I end up with two systems - one at each end of the workflow, wanting to manage the data. Re: lightroom comments
Glad to be of help. From that description, it seems like exporting your finished work to a 'completed' directory tree as I do and then letting ExpressDigital Darkroom do its thing with that could work well, complementing the original exposure import and editing workflow. I find it important to separate my finished work from work in progress this way. I always want to be able to return to the exact file that made a print when I fulfill a subsequent print order and not risk having modified it further inadvertently. Sometimes being a photographer makes photography so much more business management than it is making photographs... ! At one point I did enable 'automatic XMP' updates and I experienced quite slow responses, perhaps mostly due to 'touching' DNG's that had been changed before and got the XMP info updated but quite annoying anyway. When you enable Automatic XMP updating, Lightroom will run through and touch every file in the library, updating the metadata with any and all changes. After that, LR will constantly synchronize metadata from its database to the actual files. Whether you're adding keywords, cropping, doing tonal adjustments, etc, all of these changes are stored in the metadata as you go along so it gets into quite a bit of library to file back and forth. However, I guess it does mean that I need to 'export' DNG's if I want to use them elsewhere and retain any settings right ? If you have the Automatic XMP updating turned off and want to access those same files in place, say with Bridge and ACR, go to the folder you want to edit in, select Library/Grid mode, select all the files, and choose the Metadata-XMP-Export XMP Metadata To Files command. Lightroom will force all the metadata to be updated. You can then quit Lightroom and open a view on that folder with Bridge. Both Bridge and Camera Raw 2.7 will read and interpret the metadata properly. If you make changes on files in that folder with Bridge and Camera Raw, when you restart Lightroom and go to that folder, select all the files and use the complementary 'Import XMP Metadata From Files' command (same submenu). That will refresh LR's database with the latest settings. You should also do this if you have the same folders in two different Lightroom libraries. For other applications beyond Bridge/Camera Raw/Photoshop, the same thing will apply. You can always Export a DNG too: Lightroom will embed all the current metadata settings at the time of export unless you turn off metadata embedding. Have you done that sofar, or are you just using that single system ? I do combinations of the above as I occasionally use Bridge to run some scripted outputting, but generally have my files organized in the file system such that they are in separate Lightroom libraries so I don't get into the which set of Lightroom edits is the correct, current one. Just copying the DNG from the filesystem woyld be the version as original imported by Lightroom I guess (converted from camera PEF). Yes, unless you have forced a metadata export as above. Re: lightroom comments
OK, thanks Godders, Had not found the import/export for XMP data yet ... I don't have Bridge/CS on the MAC yet, but looking forward to CS3 that should arrive sometime next week. I do miss having photoshop arround for tweaking some of the images a bit more than Lightroom allows, that is why I enabled that auto XMP updating at some point. (I have CS2 on another, Windows system) Sofar, LR is sufficient for at least 95% of the images and I must say I really love the amount of control that you have with the RAW conversion in the develop module! Makes sense, thanks again! Re: Sacred Heart in BW
Nice capture, but I have a few nits - as nice as the sky is I'd crop out about half the distance from the top of the building to the top edge. I'd also eliminate the light pole on the RH edge. Kenneth Waller - Original Message - From: Mark Erickson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: PESO: Sacred Heart in BW Got a little time to play today, so I went down to Sacred Heart Church in East Sacramento. The church is a really nice example of local brick architecture from early in the last century: http://www.westerickson.net/mark/misc/SacredHeart01bwmed.jpg Taken with my *ist-Ds and 21 Ltd lens. I did a little perspective correction, used channel mixers to go to BW, burned the sky in a fair bit, and finished off with my digital lith process. No flames please: the trees get upset. I can't explain why, but I like it a lot. As others have said, it's technically brilliant, but there's something more to it than that. There's something almost transcendental to it (does that make sense?). It's like an Ansel Adams print - there's a beauty to it that simply goes beyond the actual content of the photo (again, I know I'm not expressing myself well - I guess I don't do artspeak). [After checking which camera I was using] Well, I suppose, depending on your tastes, you might beat it with a different Pentax. Or, depending on your tastes, you might not. Yeah. They're great cameras. I have an LX. Whoops. I'd forgotten about the LX. Yup, you can beat the K2 with another Pentax even if you really like the K2 ... (I also had a conversation with a couple of much younger fans, when they saw the cameras I was using. They were intrigued by the Holga, though quite reasonably more attracted to the Pentax K2 (I had also brought the Program Plus and PZ-10); one said she'd gotten a Canon AE-1 specifically for a photography class. I wish I'd brought an S3 with me ... I did pull out the Argus 'brick' that I'd brought along but not used, for a bit of show and tell.) I shot 125 frames on my digital camera yesterday. Plus eight rolls of film and finishing off two more rolls that were already loaded when I started. I'd started the day thinking I was probably too tired to do a lot of shooting and might need a nap before our performance ... but there was so much to shoot even though I didn't wander too far from our stage most of the day. (Okay, a lot of that was trying to catch other performers in different postures / with different expressions / from different angles.) I sure as hell get much more conversation from strangers about my older Pentaxes - Not so much the LXen, but the MX and the Spotties - than I do with the *istD. The little Leica CL gets more yet (when it's noticed), but the sure-fire attention-getter of my arsenal (such as it is) is my Yashica Mat. There just aren't a lot of people out there shooting with anything that looks like a tlr anymore... ;-) Sounds like you had fun with your cameras, Glenn! cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
