Yes only DNG.
It produces JPEG more Canon-like IMO and may (not sure) have its
exposure more Canon-like as well.

The shape is a bit different as well and the menu IMO is way better
than the Pentax verion.

Fair point. Lens is allegedly sealed against dust and moisture, so if

I've just binned a Sony V6000 camcorder. About 12 years old, but hardly
used. Optically and mechanically like new. The problem: dozens of
leaking electrolytic capacitors. The phenomenon is known. Affects all
V5000 and V6000 sooner or later. Canon users report the same trouble
with their former top-of-line EX-1.

My Philips FM1000 vhf transceiver doesn't let me program new receive
frequencies. Transmit yes, but not receive. Hasn't been dunked, either.

Just two examples of electronics failing.

It's not distortion of the lens type, it's an effect of the focal plane shutter
working in slit mode. As the slit crosses the frame, the wheel moves forward,
giving the oval shape. It's just fortuitous (or maybe a result of this photo
in particular) that the direction it leans is the one usually depicted
graphically to indicate speed.

What Cotty said is possibly badly worded but it is true that when/if the
electronics (i.e. the custom programmed processor chips) die they are gone.
Pretty much anything mechanical can be restored. Unless you have access to the
source code for the custom chip you are stuffed if you cannot find a
replacement.

Certainly is. I didn't time it but recently used a 486 66MHz/Word 2

But with a 200mb HDD, 8mb Ram, etc it was severely limited in other ways.

I have one very speculative scenario.

Let us say that Hoya are not as strong as they seem to be, and are in need
of money on a longer term. Let us say that they see the giant Samsung as a
way to get some long term investments. We know that Samsung has invested in
K-mount. Whats the logic thing to do then?
The answer could be to shake up Pentax, and then buy them. Why? Because then
Samsung will protect their interests in the K-mount. How? By throwing money
at Hoya Pentax.
We could say that Hoya are playing with Samsungs balls now ;-)

As I said. This is a very speculative theory. But it does make Samsung a
player.

So could Samsung be a player in this? They're certainly strong enough
in electronics (biggest RAM manufacturer on Earth last time I saw the
numbers, lots of other chip-level products including complex ones like
Alpha processors) and they have an interest; many (all?) of their
cameras are re-badged Pentax designs.

Having Hoya wipe out that division, if that is their plan, might really hurt
Samsung. Would Samsung buy it instead?

I think Samsung are big enough to buy the Pentax camera division out
of petty cash, or to buy all of Hoya if they really wanted to.

Tom,

Neither you nor Herb had or have the slightest idea what you are talking
about.

Pentax is in better shape now than it was two years ago. What has changed
is that it has a major shareholder that owns enough shares to call the
shots. And that major shareholder has no interest in cameras, it just
wants to make money. It believes that it is in its best interests to sell
its shares to Hoya now for 770 yen than to hang on to them and see whether
the Pentax board can do better.

What will happen when Hoya buys the business is anybody's guess, but you
can bet that it's not telling until after the deal is done.

My guess is that it has already sold the imaging division to Samsung
(subject to the deal going through, of course), but that's just a guess,
like everything else that has been said on this subject.

A lot of us often use laptops with 1280 x 800 pixel screen dimensions.
With some overhead for other screen elements it's inevitable that
800-pixel-tall images get chopped. Assuming 1024 x 768 is still the
best compromist or web displays.

I'm now sizing my horizontal shots at 800 pixels wide and my verticals

Re: GESO. my old bike.

That's not so old!

I recently had to upgrade to an expenside set of Tektro ultra long
reach calipers simply because the pads for my current brakes have been
out of production since 1982.

And I had to have my LBS modify the hub on a new sheel to fit the tiny
rear spacing. This is because my ancient shimano derailleur took 3-5
spokes with it when it grenaded.

That beibg said, I'd LOVE to own a slightly more modern but
classically designed steelie, so consider me incredibly jealous of
your bike.

Getty claiming copyright on National Archives images

2007-05-22 Thread Bob Shell
This came up on another list and I thought people here would like to
know about this major scam.

It seems that Getty Images learned a few years ago that they could
buy 4 X 5 negatives of images from the US National Archives for $ 5
each. They bought thousands. Now they are selling these same images
through their stock agency and claiming copyright on them. The vast
majority of the images in the National Archives were taken by
government employees and are public domain.

Here's just one example for anyone skeptical. Getty image: 3090980

On the getty website it says, "American Pilots November 1943:
American pilots leaning against the tail of a F6F Hellcat on board
the USS Lexington after a raid on the Marshall Islands. (Photo by MPI/
Getty Images)"

  http://preview.tinyurl.com/2825kt

Now the same image from the US National Archives.

To locate the same image, it is a bit more complicated. First go to
the NARA ARC search engine:

http://arcweb.archives.gov/arc/basic_search.jsp

click the large yellow oval that says, "SEARCH" and you will see a
search page. In the blank box at the top enter the ARC number 520896
(just enter the numbers only) and click on the GO button to the right.

National Archives ARC: 520896 It also says Local Identifier: 80-
G-470985 (this is the National Archives number for that image. The 80-
G says WWII and US Navy PHOTOGRPHER, other photographs are NOT in
this category, only ones shot by US Navy personal. The top page says
Digital copy available, that line is a link, click it. The next page
has a thumbnail and the text block starts with, "Pilots leaning
across F6F on board the USS Lexington (CV-16) after shooting down 17
out of 20 Japanese planes heading for Tarawa." THIS block of text is
a link to the next page so Click that link.. This page is where the
truth lies. At the bottom it lists "Steichen, Edward, Photographer"
If you do not know, Edward Steichen was a Commander in the US Navy
and headed the Navy's photographic team. He was a US Government
employee and as such ALL of his images (during his service) are in
the Public Domain. This is noted earlier on this page by saying,
"Access Restrictions: Unrestricted Use Restrictions: Unrestricted"

As public domain images, these images belong to US, the public.
Getty, or anyone else, has absolutely no right to claim copyright to
these images and sell them.

We need to spread the word on this, and any of Getty's customers who
have paid to license such images should demand an immediate and full
refund.

I'm dumb.

2007-05-22 Thread AlexG
So I've been eyeballing the limited lenses The real, fast ones not
the slow crappy new generation ones.

It occurs to me that there is something seriously wrong because a
month ago I would never even consider any of them, but it seems that
now i have no qualms about spending the equivalent of a brand new k10d
on a single god damned lens.

And this is not even for any realistic gain in lens performance or
image quality. A month ago, I went with the k100d instead of the k10d
because the extras in the k10d were not, to me, worth the extra 400
bucks. And they still aren't but I'm mentally prepared to pull the
trigger on ultrapremium glass.

What the hell is wrong with me?

Am I trying to fill a very distinct void in my life with nice toys
instead of dealing with the deeper issues?

It must have been cooler in Wisconsin in the late 1940's, too, 'cause I
remember this as a song that was sung in school from just before
Thanksgiving until Christmas. Another was "Over the River and Through

We *did* sing that verse along with others using "The Little Golden Book
of Songs". I remember quite a few songs in that book that were
considered innocent that would not be politically correct now. I wish I
still had a copy.

It was registered the same day they announced the agreement for the
Hoya-Pentax merge into Hoya Pentax HD, remember? Why is it peculiar? It
should be peculiar not to do that.

In any case, I think the only truth we can be sure of is we have no
capability to foresee the future, hence any guess could be true or false.
Any guess will also be useless for a positive change, while the negative
prophecies could be self-fulfilling. For that reason, I tend not to enter

I think that you seriously overestimate the influence of the list in
this matter, the fact that they have basic problems like delivering
lenses that people want is a fair indication of how poorly the company

You don't remember it because it probably had not yet been written.
This verse was written 20 years ago for the movie "Funny Girl" and
the name should read Fanny Brice, the protagonist played by Barbra

Don't believe much of what you read on the Internet... (but you

PESO - Chester

2007-05-22 Thread frank theriault
My 14-year-old daughter Claire came to visit me on the weekend.

We spent Sunday walking about town with my girlfriend. Just for fun,
since she's expressed interest in photography in the past, I took a
film camera for me (my first time since I got the *istD!), and Claire
took the *istD. I set everything to green, and she used it as a point
and shoot.

She took over 200 photos! She had a blast. I'd like to share a
couple of them with you today.

She actually has a really good eye, IMHO, but I'm not sure about the
weird guys she photographs:

I know Claire would appreciate your comments.

In this case the camera was also panning with the car creating even
more interesting distortion, like the leaning man on the left. To
visualize how it happens, turn the picture upside down and consider a
relatively slow moving slit running from top to bottom, and that
"straight up and down" would require a vertical line through the man
on the left...

Solid state logic components rarely if ever "die", Mike, unless
subjected to abuse in the form of wet environment or bad power . All
the failures mentioned so far are mechanical failures of inexpensive
electronic components built to substandard specs.

That said, electronics can fail occasionally but mechanical
components *will* fail. Some things, while theoretically possible to
repair, are very difficult to do so or too expensive to be worth the
effort in either case.

I was by the camera shop yesterday and enjoyed playing with a lovely
old Nikon F3hp from 1980. Perfect working condition. One of my most
favorite cameras.

Fun little LBA test!

2007-05-22 Thread AlexG
LBA test! If you answer yes to 2 or more of these, you have LBA,

1. Have you ever searched eBay for the words "Super Takumar" and
filtered it for those auctions that are only "Buy It Now"? (Try it
now)

Yes.

2. Do you compulsively look into the used lens section at camera shops
or KEH for anything that could remotely fit on a Pentax camera? Even
though you already have the focal range of 15mm to 300mm covered with
your present lenses?

Yes.

3. If someone says they have a 50mm Pentax lens, do you question them
further to find out exactly which version it is, and depending on the
answer, do you get smug or jealous?

Most definitely yes.

4. Have you purchased more than 3 of the Limited lenses?
Not yet :( Why would I do it? I can't help it. i want to...!?

5. Have you ever put your lenses in a display case?
No. lenses exist to be used, or admired in hand,

6. Have you ever hidden receipts because "no one else needs to know
how much I paid for it"...?
Can't hide a receipt when someone else accepts your package :)

7. Have you ever felt pride in getting a lens for under market value
and set that as your new "threshold to break"? For example, you pick
up an SMC-M 28mm lens for $15 bucks, and now you're on the look out
for grabbing anything for under $15 that could qualify as "a better
deal"...?

Sure, but that's a ridiculous deal!

8. Have you ever drawn up a short list for which lenses to bring on a
trip and then thrown in some extras "just in case"...?

Yep.

9. Have you ever stalked a lens on the internet, by researching it
tirelessly for days by looking for sample shots, qualified reviews,
tests, etc., and this lens pre-dates the internet?

Oh yeah!

10. Did you pre-order a DA* lens and get giddy just thinking about its
arrival this summer?

No. Zooms suck.

Post your responses or stories!

I have yet to see an :"affordable" LCD with resolution that high. Still
the Hitachi seems to render characters smoother at 1600x1200. I don't
know the actual specifications on this beast, it was a castoff from a

because they were upgrading to an LCD with lower native resolution). I
simple installed the proper drivers and set the highest resolution I
could read with Windows Fonts set to 125%. I use other resolutions to
check output but the highest produces the smoothest and sharpest

The first rule of enablement is that desire alone is adequate purchase

Re: I'm dumb.

2007-05-22 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thanks Paul and Alex for the compliments. :-)

Having owned and used all of them now except for the DA40, all the
Limiteds are exceptional performers.

I have no interest in 35mm film any more, other than sentimental
desire to use my Rollei 35S once in a blue moon (coming up...). The
DA21 and DA70 are a better fit to the K10D than the FA31 and FA77
were. I still prefer the FA43 over the DA40, I think it presents
nicer rendering qualities.

An interest in high quality lenses generally means that either you
have developed enough critical ability to discern quality that they
are warranted or that you want them as a status symbol. Wanting only
the highly vaunted, much adulated by peers older Limiteds is a sign
that the status symbol qualification may be intruding on your
objectivity. It doesn't guarantee this is true, but it's something to
think about.

On the other hand, far be it from me to discourage a little "lens
buying addiction". There are worse addictions in the world.

Electronics wear out just like anything else. Cycling it on and off
creates heat stress in connections at the very least. Mechanical
switches are a week point they wear out from physical movement, seals at
those points wear as well, and replacement parts after 30 years will be
made out of Unobtainium . Even if the electronics survive, batteries
can be a problem. I have a small collection of HP calculators that are
at least 30 years old that would work perfectly except that batteries in
the proper form factor are no longer manufactured. I recycled the
plastic shells until they could no longer be re-assembled. After that
it was easier to just buy a crappy new calculator. (Luckily when my
original HP 42s crapped out, (keyboard failed), the replacement HP sent
me used S76 cells, instead of the original PX13s...)

I think they could justify selling the images, as a large part of what
they sell is the service of being able to search their archives, not
just the image itself (aka the standard Open Source Software business
model, sell the service not the software). Claiming copyright on the
images is out of the question, of course.

RE: Getty claiming copyright on National Archives images

2007-05-22 Thread John Poirier
I think it is shocking that government bums like the US National Archives
should be practically giving away images, interfering with the sacred right
of Getty Images to eke out a modest living. Clearly the Archives must be
broken up and turned over to private sector people with a fundamental
understanding of, and true faith in, the bottom line.

LOL!

BTW, the 77's short lens hood is mostly useless for the DSLRs. I
strongly recommend buying a B+W screw-in metal lens hood, telphoto
model 49mm threads. It is a *perfect* match to the FA77.

They're out of stock right now but it's well worth waiting for...

It depends on how you shoot, but I've always preferred mid-longish
focal lengths. As a result the 77 is my most used lens.

And while it seems the recent crop of Limited's are as fine optically
as their older siblings none of them have really called to me to run

Great shot! Despite the lack of blur she's definitely a Theriault; that
distinct style must run in the family ;-)

I kind of like it, but you're right, she could have chosen a better subject.

That's probably why I can remember walking to school through snow up to
my knees...of course, I was a little shorter then.

I just came across a site on the web that says that Jingle Bells was
originally written as a Thanksgiving Day song. Must have been cooler back
in 1857. Strangely I do not remember this verse from school,

Cheap components, usually the resistor used for the K-mount aperture
follower if I recall what my service tech friend told me. I bet
someone could repair it but it isn't cost effective to do so.

Nikon FTn Photomic heads for the F and F2 often have problems with a
similar component. There's a guy who rebuilds them and recalibrates
them for currently available batteries for about $70 a head.

What all these problems really indicate is how cheap, low-spec most
of the electronic components being used are, even in high-end
cameras. Curiously, my 1966 RCA transistor radio that cost me $20
(expensive back then!) is still going strong.
