Thanks, Beaker. He WAS posing and hung around for a while picking up
cow parts. Two others flew in and out and landed on various perches
over the course of an hour or so. I shot over 100 frames of them.

What looks like a bad toupee is the crest in the lowered position. :-)

Bill Bryson did part of the trail and managed to sleep in a lot of

Re: How to improve this shot? (Heavy Weather 2)

2007-05-23 Thread Tom C
This is the best, straight to the point, critique of an image(s) that I
think I've heard on the PDML.

I agree whole-heartedly.

Good job on that Christian. Basically it's wasting time on an image that is
almost good enough. If you have one of those, your time is better spent
doing almost ANYTHING, than working with the sub-par image.

Go out and try again, anything! Start out with a good shot and make it
better, but don't start out with something less and expect it to be great.

This is not meant to criticize you in any way Tim. I agree with Christian
that focus is all important in wildlife shots.

I refrained from commenting on the "Heavy Weather" series originally,
because, personally, I found nothing too appealing in the shots. I
understand the concept and the idea for the series and I truly
understand adverse shooting conditions. But since you seem to be really
fond of this shot, I'll tell you what I don't like about it and offer a
suggestion or two.

First, the oyster catcher (middle bird), drags my attention straight to
its bright, red beak. This is unfortunate since it is out of focus. I
know it's not meant to be in focus for the layering effect (see below)
but it's just bad luck that it's the brightest thing in the frame and
I'm distracted by bright, shiny objects.

Second, I don't like the pose of the lapwing (foreground bird). It's a
nice bird, but its rear end is not that interesting and conflicts with
the profiles of the other two birds.

Third, nothing is really in critical focus. I think for this layering
effect to work, you need one bird in super-sharp focus. Just as an
example and with entirely different weather conditions (overcast, no
snow) check out: http://tinyurl.com/2emxee The shooting angle is
similar (slightly above) and the idea was the same. I wish my birds
weren't intersecting and for that I missed THE shot too (again, in my
opinion). With static birds (perched, standing, etc) I REALLY think
critical focus is the key. Seriously, if I miss focus, especially on
the eye, by more than a hair, I delete the image.

So, MY suggestion; what I would do with this image; I would go back and
try again another day. You say you "don't have time" but really, as a
hobbyist, all you have is time. It'll snow again, the birds will be
there again and you can use other images for your display in the
meantime. I guess I don't "push" my images to fill a gap or try to make
them into something they can't be. Perhaps it's an experience thing. I
go back and look at old slides and wonder why I kept them. I've
improved a ton in the past 6 or so years as my shooting increased (and
still have a lot more to go!). Maybe that's why I am so critical of my
own work, because I KNOW I'm capable of better. It's just a matter of
going back and doing it again and learning from my errors. Instead of
fixing a current image, I'll shoot another of the same
subject/location/style, remembering why I didn't like the original.
Sometimes, for example Australian birds (the parrots there are amazing),
I might have to wait several years to re-shoot.

Any way, my 2 Kroner. Only meant to help you since you seem to have an
interest in something I have a real passion for.

Hey, Mark? I did half the Appalachian Trail with a day pack and a poly tarp.
And, I started from Tampa. I was older then than you are now. I didn't even
have a credit card. Am I a pansy?

I spent a night on the rim of an ancient volcano in the Rockies, with only two
sticks to rub together for equipment. Am I a pansy?

I walked across the US from, DC to Portland, with my home on my back. Am I a
pansy?

Or are you, yuppi?

If you read some of the followup postings you'll find out that:

 1) This isn't really new - in fact just about the same press
release was discussed on dpreview back in 2005.

 2) Sony already sell cameras with this level of sensitivity.

 3) The resolution is quite low (VGA?), and the pesky laws of
physics pretty much say you're going to be stuck at low
resolutions to get even marginally acceptable signal-to-
 noise ratios.

2000 times faster than conventional sensors, they say. Wow! 11 stops.

I reckon most of us only need about four; that gives any of the dozens
of F4 or thereabouts lenses around -- nice ones like Pentax 21/3.2
Limited, Olympus 7-14 F4 zoom for 4/3, Canon 24-105 F4 on a 5D,
or cheap ones like almost any kit zoom -- the low-light capability of
an F1.0 Leica Noctilux.

But at what cost? What is the dynamic range? Colour rendition? Noise
performance? Are there manufacturing difficulties? Wiil the thing ever
make it out of the lab?

And are there tradeoffs? Instead of 11 stops faster, can we have, say,
5 stops faster with 6 stops better dynamic range? Either would be
wonderful. Together, they'd be stunning.

Haven't tried it, but I want to get my S.O. to have a go with the K10D
on her microscope. We have to get the university to get the proper
set-up for using the K-mount body on it (though M42 would do since I
have an adapter). She had an Olympus microscope before but she's just
moved to a different hospital and I'm not sure what she's using now.

If the microscope is properly set up, getting the image in focus
through the eyepiece will also make it in focus at the sensor plane.
There may be a little trial and error in this, but once done it
shouldn't need to be tinkered with.

Like I said, properly design electronic devices made with
high-quality components and attention to thermal design last practically
forever. Major causes are:

- Bad or no thermal design... especially with computer parts
- Electrolytic caps
- Electrostatic damage
- Mechanical shock (not too normal)

Citing examples of consumer-grade electronics failing often negate
the original assumption of properly and correctly designed with decent
components. Take a piece of aircraft avionics they live in a
*horrible* environment with heat/cold/vibration/shock/corrosion and last
literally for decades. The failures are almost always mechanical, not
electrical, and are due to the bad environment.

How to improve this shot? (Heavy Weather 2)

2007-05-23 Thread Tim Øsleby
Some NEWS first:
I'm now prepering my first "commersial" displaying at a local cafe. It is
noting big, just a wall to display at. And most of the regular visitors
arent excactly the type to pay money for photography. So I don't expect
much. Never the less, it is kind of exiting :-)

The birds in Heavy Weather series means something for me, despite the mixed
reviews. The idea is to display then next to some slick looking "Bird in
Sunset" etc.pictures, to make a contrast.
It might be a bad idea, but I think it's the right thing to do, for me.

And now, the PHOTO:
You may remember this
http://foto.no/cgi-bin/bildegalleri/vis_bilde.cgi?id=308716
and Godfreys response (at the bottom of this post). Those of you who are
less senile than me, may also remember that I responded claiming Photoshop
phobia, and asked for more concrete suggstions on how to make the separation
better. He responded by adwising me to get rid of my Photoshop phobia by
picking up some books.
I'm doing that now, reading.
And it seem to help. In fact it is rather fun. Now I'm actually able to open
Elements without a major sweating attack ;-)
So thank you very much Godfrey for kicking me in my lower back region.

Now I'm looking at the photo, the one that triggered the "read some books"
suggestion. I'm looking for ways to make the separation between the bird and
the surroundings better. Haven't come up with a solution yet.
So now I'm asking more. (That's the downside of doing people favours, they
tend to come back for more (-; )
Could you please give me some hints on what techniques to use, to acomplish
the goal, a better separation?
I'm not asking for tutoring or detailed explonations. Just some simple
hints, on what to go for, and what tools.

I could make the crop a wider, and move the "offending" bird down a tiny
bit. That would probably help. But I think it needs a bit more. Something
adding some punch to the bird and the bird alone. I don't think encreasing
saturation of the bird more is the right direction. Encreased saturation
will alter the mood of the shot.

But I'm open to most suggestions.
Unless they means to go back to reshoot. Havent got time for that. It ain't
snowing all year here ;-)

I haven't done it, but I can't imagine that it will be any different

6 suits of tropical linen
sou'wester

cane for whacking snakes
coil of rope

several cleft sticks
riding breeches for winter and summer
bush shirts
a sola topi
a double-brimmed sun hat
a camp bed and sleeping bag
long boots to deter mosquitoes at sundown
quinine pills to protect against malaria
slabs of black chocolate for energy
metal uniform cases
a cedarwood trunk lined with zinc to keep ants out
silk pyjamas to avoid typhus

I like the symmetry - both of them with legs crossed, both of them looking down.

I also like the way they're apparently together, but seem to be in
their own worlds for the moment.

Lovely B&W rendering.

I was at a presentation of the plenoptic camera technology a few
months (or was it a year?) ago. Practical implementations is
predicated on the notion that within the next few years there will be
available cost-effective sensors with 100Mpixel or more, essentially
excess resolution for practical use with current imaging systems.
Bending that excess resolution to recording direction vector
information gives access to whole new dimensions in image capture.
