I do much the same thing, only I don't have voicemail and for some

Re: Facet eyes

2007-06-22 Thread Toine
Thanks Kenneth.
Details... It's the most common Marmelade Fly (Episyrphus balteatus).
I was on safari in my backyard with the F100/2.8. The F100 fully
extended (1:1) and a ringflash fitted. The ringflash is fully manual.
The ringflash always fires at max power resulting in pitch black
backgrounds. Cropped a little and that's it.

I think the original reason for the UK legislation was to protect
power-critical places like hospitals and scientific institutions, so that they
could maintain accuracy of instruments. I suppose the introduction of
transistorised, regulating power supplies, needed for the less stable parts of
the world, has overtaken that specification.

Re: FA* 80-200 f/2.8

2007-06-22 Thread Patrick Genovese
Hi John,

1. Nice Shot...

2. Would you pixel peep a couple of high contrast images for me and
check out the CA artefacts etc... ?? Thanks in advance.

3. You mention its is a great action lens... In what ways ?

4. How is the focusing speed on the K10D ?

Basically I may have the opprtunity to buy one of these (estate sale).
And if the asking price is reasonable I'll buy it but since the K10
is my main camera now I want to make sure that it is a good
investment. The other alternative is the upcoming fa 50-135 ... I'm
not in a rush so I can wait but otoh i prefer the 70-200 range as
opposed to 50-135.

Update on my Peso Swans

2007-06-22 Thread David J Brooks
Sent in a copy of the picture to two of our local papers. One is
published twice a week, and has flyers and everything, and one is a
monthly.

The monthly is going to run it with story, but the weekly paper ran it
Thursday on the front page, with my comments.
I had a picture on a front page a few years ago, but this paper is
actually read.

Whoo Hoo.

Never would have got that shot, before retiring (well forced retiring LOL)

Re: my Iceland photos are online...

2007-06-22 Thread Amita Guha
Thanks, Ann! If you mouse over the bottom of the slideshow screen,
you'll get a control bar. There's a "transitions" option; you can
uncheck the box to get rid of the fading (I hate that effect too). And
on the control bar, you can hit "pause" and just go back and forth as
you wish by clicking the arrows, or by using your arrow keys.

Glad you like the duck in the ice lagoon! I thought I'd get some
amazing shots of the icebergs on the boat tour and that one, which I
took from shore, turned out to be the keeper...

Read that yesterday morning. Not bad really, though he should have
pointed out that it's possible (and pretty easy) th change the default
JPEG settings. Still, he seem to feel that the K10D is the best of the
bunch for experienced photographers.

The article demonstrates that Pentax really needs to come out with a
"Rebel-version" of the K10D: "Dummy" modes, optimized JPEG output,
pentamirror, skip the weather sealing...

I'd bet such a camera will appear fairly soon, probably before the
model above the K10D makes an appearance.

PESO - The Commute

2007-06-22 Thread frank theriault
This morning was about as perfect a day to ride to work as I'll ever
have. 15C (about 60F), winds from the north east (I commute south and
west), my spin felt perfect, the sun felt glorious.

Not a perfect photo from a technical viewpoint, but I ~felt~ as fast
as this photo portrays - I'm not saying I ~was~ that fast, but I felt
it. From camera to PDML in less than an hour - love digital!

;-)

New K10D

2007-06-22 Thread Steve Desjardins
Hey,

The K10D arrived yesterday. Here are some random thoughts and a
question directed at you folks because not one else wants to listen.

1. It is bigger than I'm used to from Pentax lately, but smaller than
my 645 and not heavier than the MZ-S with the grip. I was a bit worried
since I have small hands, but the ergonomics are perfect. For me, it's
one of those cameras that's a pleasure to hold, more so than the DS.
Nice viewfinder, shutter placement etc. The four way switch is OK,
still a bit touchy. The build is also pleasingly devoid of all those
little "why the hell did they put that cheap piece of crap" here. I
have small fingers, so I take a certain perverse delight in those tiny
latches. I prefer hard buttons to menus so that's also pretty good.

2. Images are pretty good in JPG. I'm yet to try raw. I was doing a
pseudo-macro (I had the FA 50 1.4) of a cactus in waning light, and
immediately drifted toward TAv mode with shake reduction on, wallowing
in the K10D capabilities. Good results, and, at least for me, pretty
intuitive to use.

3. I know I should shoot raw, but I really like the level of color
balance control for the JPGs. Question: Is that Bright mode anything
special or is just some combination of Sharpness, Contrast, and
Saturation that I could do with the three sliding scales. For example,
if I set bright mode and throw the sharpness to full (not saying this is
a good idea) is it sharper than full power sharpness alone? I can't
find an answer anywhere in the manual, and I haven't tried it
experimentally yet.

4. This camera rewards me when I think like a photographer as opposed
to snapshooter. I'm an enthusiast, not a pro, and I take great delight
in carefully taking a shot. Despite all the market share arguments,
this is exactly what I really want and expect from Pentax: a nerdy
technical camera for a photo geek like myself. I've always thought
that this is what Pentax used to do well with film cameras, and it's
nice to finally see the digital version.

In my humble opinion, of course

Thanks, Jack, Godfrey, mike.

I do like a bit of a crop (computer with PS arriving on the weekend!),
and Jack, my biggest problem with it is the exposure - foreground too
dark, background too light - oh well, like you said, try again on

Around $1700 street price. I got mine, used, for $1200 or so,
and considered that a good deal. The lowest price I've ever
seen for one of them is still in four figures.

The ideal tool is a DIP chip lifter. It looks almost like a set of
tweezers, but the ends of the blades have the last .5 mm or so bent
inwards at a 90 degree angle, so there's something to catch under
the little lip at the top of the card. I used to carry one of
these to make it easy getting microdrives out of the *ist-D, but
so far (even with the new thicker Transcend lables) I haven't had
to use it to get a SD card out of the K10D.

Re: New K10D

2007-06-22 Thread Steve Desjardins
That's actually kind of funny. The college I work at has all sorts of
software licences, so I called my support person to see what I could get
on my office computer. The only thing they give out is Photoshop CS3.
(They actually pay something for each installation, but I do occasional
photography for school purposes using my own equipment so I qualify.) I
know this is a wonderful package, but I 've always hated working with
Adobe products and especially PS. Part of me still believes it was
designed by a bunch of engineers that never got over not being able to
program directly in hex anymore. Anyway, I did use the last non-CS
version of PS, so I guess I can adapt.

I do have an old package that I really like by Micrografx called
Picture Publisher. It goes back to 2001, however, so it can't handle
RAW.

>>> Rick Womer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 6/22/2007 12:04 PM >>>
Steve,

Congrats! It =is= a great camera.

Try RAW. It is amazing what you can do with it, and
how much better the results are, with very modest
effort. What photo software do you have?

Took a few shots in the park ( no pun intended )
with my SMC-K 30mm F2.8 lens today. Very sharp
and constrasty with excellent color saturation.
This lens works well on digital, no CA and no
distortion. Here's a few sample test photos converted
for web which frankly dont look as good as the
original raw conversions did:

( camera - Pentax *istDS, RAW to sRGB conversions
and reduced for web )

Tour de Wessex

2007-06-22 Thread Bob W

I came back yesterday from a cycle trip around Dorset, Wilts and
Hants. Here are the pictures in case you don't want to read all the
guff below: http://www.web-options.com/Byway/

Here's a couple of old boys who should join the PDML:
http://www.web-options.com/Byway/content/_6185590_large.html

I cut the trip short a few days because I blew my accommodation budget
in just 3 nights - it was costing me 2-3 times more than anticipated.
The prices of B&Bs around there is outrageous, and frankly I got sick
of traipsing around looking for somewhere reasonably priced, then
having to settle for the top end of the market because there were no
other vacancies anywhere.

Anyway, the cycling itself was very enjoyable, but difficult at times.
I don't know why they call them Downs - they seem mostly to be Ups,
into a headwind. I took the train to Tisbury on Monday, cycled to
Shaftesbury, which is a lovely town, and spent a very enjoyable
evening there. In the morning I cycled across Cranborne Chase via
Melbury, Ashmore, Farnham and the Gussages, up to Cranborne, Tidpit
and Rockbourne to Fordingbridge, where I had a huge problem finding
accommodation, but eventually found a grotty little place in a nearby
village.

By that time one of my spokes was breaking, which made the back wheel
wobble and catch the brake pads. I had to loosen the brakes almost to
the point of danger to let the wheel spin at all. I couldn't find
anyone to repair it quickly in Fordingbridge, so the next day I cycled
up to Salisbury along the edge of the New Forest via Brune Purlieu,
Woodgreen, Alderbury, East Grimstead, Farley and Pitton.

I found a very good, helpful bike shop in Salisbury (Stonehenge
Cycles, if you ever need a bike fixing in Salisbury!
http://www.stonehengecycles.com/) and he was able to replace the spoke
and true the wheel in the morning. He was also helpful in recommending
several B&Bs, but they were all full and I had to settle for the only
vacancy I could find, which was humungously expensive - not much
cheaper than one of the top hotels in town. Next morning I heard one
of the guests had arrived at 2am after searching the whole of
Salisbury, accommodation being so scarce. Probably all the druids have
booked the rooms.

When I had the bike back I headed back to Tisbury via
Stratford-sub-Castle, the Woodfords, Wylye Valley and then down across
Cranborne Chase via Dinton and Teffont Magna. Including various
side-trips (and getting lost) I cycled about 110 miles - over half of
it on an out-of-true back wheel.

The countryside and villages are quite spectacular. Some of the
villages, especially on Cranborne Chase, are quite breathtakingly
beautiful, they're so ancient and crumbling. Mostly I didn't even
bother trying to photograph them. To get the best shots you need to
wait around for the light, and to find the best view, but even then
you'd just have a postcard view. To do the places justice I think you
need to live there and have the places as a background to the locals'
lives, as James Ravilious did in Devon.

But it's a wonderful area to cycle (although some of the hills are
hard work) and shows the very best of tourist board England. I was
very surprised in Hampshire though that so few of the villages still
had pubs. I'd planned on pub lunches, but from Fordingbridge up to
Pitton not a single village still had a pub. The pub in Pitton
wouldn't serve me any food because it was after 2pm and the chef had
gone home. Apparently only chefs can make a ploughman's lunch, which
probably explains the absence of ploughmen in Hampshire - they've all
starved to death. The villages in Hampshire seem dead - just dormitory
villages - whereas at least in Dorset and Wiltshire they seem to have
something other than rich commuters.

Salisbury and the area around the Cathedral Close are really stunning
in the summer evening light. Unfortunately the cathedral itself is
covered in scaffolding at the moment, but the cathedral close is very
beautiful.

I'd like to have gone to Filly Loo tonight in Ashmore (that's their
annual festival when they have pagan rituals round the duck pond), and
earlier I was still debating whether to drive over and back today, but
I'm very tired (slept 11 hours last night), so I'll give it a miss
until next year.

I still plan to cycle around South and West Dorset and visit various
Hardy sites, and the prehistoric and Roman sites, but I'll do it from
a base near Dorchester. Maybe even next week, if I can find some cheap
accommodation at such short notice.

Cheers,
Bob

Another Lightroom Question

2007-06-22 Thread Eactivist
Apparently in Lightroom I can import the whole Elements 5, "library" with
tags and all that I have already setup. From the organizer section, if I am
not
using exactly the right words, well, that's what I mean.

Anyone done this? I am debating doing this or just resetting up a library in
Lightroom from scratch. I don't think I can reimport it back into Elements 5
if I change anything in Lightroom. It would be a short cut, though.

Well, any info. on this appreciated.

Neat story and some nice photos as well... esp. the abbeys, the stone bridge

An enjoyable way to spend my lunch on Friday. Thanks.

Bouncer

2007-06-22 Thread Bob W
Today I was walking past the UK HQ of one of the big US banks and
noticed 3 identikit bouncers on the door. I was framing up to shoot
them, and waiting for other people to get out of the way so I could
get a clean shot, when I noticed a couple of them start to scowl, and
one started walking towards me:

http://www.web-options.com/Bouncer.jpg

The usual argument ensued:

Bouncer (East European accent): You are not allowed to photograph this
building
Me: This is a public place, I can photograph whatever I like
Bouncer: It is against the law
Me: Are you a lawyer?
Bouncer: No. It is what I have been told. Are you a lawyer?
Me: Yes. Tell whoever told you that that they are wrong
Bouncer: This is what I have been told
Me: You've been told wrong

But I never got the shot I wanted.

It really pisses me off when people do that. Anyway, the bank I work
for is bigger than the bank he works for, so there.

You obviously did the safe thing by not taking the shot you wanted,
but I've always wondered what would happen in those situations if one
continued shooting and the bouncer roughed you up, tried to take your
camera, in any way assaulted or battered you.

I suppose a law suit would be in the offing.

That being said, I'd prefer to be unhurt and poor to being black and
blue (or worse) with monies in pocket. Best not to argue with such
people...

Still, I like the shot you got...

Rhode Island was OT know your place

2007-06-22 Thread Tom C
>From Wikipedia...

Rhode Island is a large per capita consumer of coffee. According to a
Providence Journal article, the state features the highest number of
coffee/donut shops per capita in the country, with over 100 Dunkin' Donuts
locations in the state alone.

Several foods and dishes are unique to Rhode Island, and cannot be found
outside of the state. "Wieners," which are sometimes called "gaggers" or
"weenies" are smaller than a standard hot dog but are covered in a meat
sauce, chopped onions, mustard, and celery salt.

The quahog (whose shell is Rhode Island's state shell) is a large clam which
is mixed with stuffing and spicy minced sausage and then baked in the shell
to form a "Stuffie."

The first automobile race on a track was held in Cranston, Rhode Island on
September 7, 1896.

Thanks. I acted on the assumption that the bank trains its bouncers

Semi OT (non-Pentax) PESO: Spider at Sunset

2007-06-22 Thread Charles Robinson
Those who are Arachnophobic have been warned: SPIDER PICTURE

The wife and I were walking across a bridge at sunset and came across
this guy. I had the Fujifilm F30 on my belt so I took a quick
picture of the little guy.

There's a lot a person could have fiddled with in terms of the
appearance of the web or whatnot - as there were about 1,000 of these
guys all across the bridge I could have looked for "the perfect web"
- but I didn't.

Still, I like it:

Small Quahogs. (also called littlenecks), are steamed dipped in butter
and served with sweet corn, (this tastes best if the shellfish are taken
out of collected without a license, and the corn is stolen from a
farmers field), but they're still great anytime. Rhode Island is the
only place I've seen Coffee Syrup, a concoction much like chocolate
syrup, for making coffee milk. It's an interesting place...

The other thing you can do is make this a whole new picture. Create the
layer as described above and save the layer as a PSD file. Name it
something like "oval-mask.psd". Then whenever you need it, just open it
copy the layer and paste it as a layer into any portrait.

If you want to get fancy, you can have a "white-oval-mask",
"50percent-grey-oval-mask", ...

Okay, I may be wrong about this, it is possible the catalog used for Adobe

You can have several different libraries in Lightroom, and can choose
where to put them. By default it put mine (Win XP) in My Documents\My
Pictures.

To find out, or to use a different library, on the Edit menu, choose
Preferences. On the General tab there is a Panel called Default
library. In the dropdown list you should see the name of your library
among the options.

Thanks to you both. It was in the Mitre at Shaftesbury, where they
serve a very good pint.

The view from the garden is nice too:
http://www.web-options.com/Byway/content/_6185584_large.html.

Great spot to sit and chat over a pint while the shadows lengthen.

In fact, all the pubs I went in on that trip served great beer, mostly
fairly local brews such as Badger and Ringwood, and at the Bell Inn in
Wyley (built in 1373) they have about 7 different beers from the
Hidden Brewery only 2 miles away. It's superb beer, although entirely
the wrong thing to have for lunch immediately before trying to cycle
up a Down.

On which note, I made the mistake of asking for directions in one of
the villages, and was told (West Country accent): You go right down up
over.

Gee, thanks. And how would we say that in the 21st century?

Re: New K10D

2007-06-22 Thread Bob Sullivan
Steve,
Glad to see you enjoying the K10D.
Try working with RAW.
Cotty posted a comparison some time ago.
The difference is in the range of blacks & whites.
I think it is the 14 bits used in raw vs the 8 bits in jpeg.
It allows you to extract extra detail and make it visible in the final jpeg.
Mighty handy...

Nice pix, Bob--I especially like No. 4 (though one
might crop out the bicycle frame at the extreme
right); I also like the look of those pints of Young's
(my favourite).

Filching with an "I" means stealing, or at least it did when I was
growing up. Actually, it meant a really, Really, petty theft, e.g.
"filching apples from ol' man so-and-so's orchard" ... kid's stuff. Sort
of in the same league with tipping over out-houses and puttin'
cherry-bombs in mailboxes.

Felching with an "E" has another meaning entirely.

I quite like the shot as well.
Having said that, I also believe that our natural tendency to comply with
people to threaten to hurt us if we don't comply with their illegal wishes
will ultimately cost us much more than a few bruises.
