Re: Costco slide scanning

2008-03-02 Thread Walter Hamler
Gee, those are terrible!
I must say that the photo lab staff at the store I used are very
knowledgable and know the technology. They showed me the equipment and
the scanner alone was 60,000.00. It is attached to one of the Noritsu
machines so it can make prints if ordered or it just spits out the
cd's. They monitor each scan and tweak as necessary.
I suspect you are up against some newby's that don't understand fully
what they are doing.

Re: Costco slide scanning

>Are you happy with the results?

Not really. For the most part, they look good, a few will
need to be inverted (scanned backwards), and a couple were obviously
too much color saturation for their machine to handle, and most were a
bit blown out on the highlights with a lack of saturation.

I've uploaded a few for you to see, with a comparison between some I
scanned myself on someone else's machine when I had a chance. My
scans aren't perfect, but I'm satisfied they are fairly close to the
original picture so you can see the difference between their scan and
the way it should look.

Actually, you can get auto aperture on Sony/Minolta mount with a
chipped adaptor, although I don't think anybody made such an adaptor.
Alpha mount uses a mechanical aperture stop-down, but electronic
communication of aperture info. It's essentially identical to
aperture-ring-less FA J and DA lenses in function.

Personally, even though it's expensive, if I felt the need for an AC
adapter I'd buy the Pentax qualified unit for the K10D (Pentax K-
AC50). That way if there is any weird problem, at least you have some
grounds to call in Pentax and say "hey what, your power supply just
fried my camera ... !!!" And they might listen ...

Re: K20D long-lens, high ISO samples

2008-03-02 Thread pnstenquist
Hi Jack,
Yes, the noise is noticeable on number three. It's the result of underexposing
to preserve the highlight detail. Number two is basically the same shot exposed
at about meter reading, but the bright highlight on the front of the bird burns
out. A function of the light. Deail looks pretty good, even at 100$; Of course
a TC and lens isn't the optimum answer. The first two were off the tripod, BTW,
so you wouldn't have to lift it:-).

2008-03-02 Thread Jack Davis
Noise is a slight bit noticeable on #3. Don't know if I could lift this
combination, let alone shoot and adjust focus at the same time.
I did sort of expect slightly more detail, but with the 2X T/C the
inadvertent rapid scene movement would have been extremely difficult to
overcome even at the noted shutter speeds and SR on.

Thanks Micah. Sorry to tempt you:-). I had to sell a bunch of stuff to come up
with it. And if I had done my income tax return first, I might have had to

K20D long-lens, high ISO samples

2008-03-02 Thread Paul Stenquist
Went out to the nature center today to give the K20D a workout with
my A400/5.6 and A2X-S converter. This combination wasn't really
working with the K10D or the *istD. Because the wide open stop is
f11, I had to go to at least ISO 800, even though I was working off
the tripod. Too much noise. The same was true for handholding the
A400/5.6 without the converter. One of the reasons I wanted the K20D
was to be able to use this lens and lens/converter combo efficiently.
Some preliminary samples follow. All were with High ISO noise
reduction set to weak.

A4005.6 with AF540GFZ flash and Xtender, ISO 800, handheld:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7013146
I like this one.

A4005.6 plus A2X-S converter with AF540GFZ flash and Xtender on
tripod, ISO 1000, exposure at meter reading, f8 @ 1/200th:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7013166&size=lg.

A4005.6 plus A2X-S converter with AF540GFZ flash and Xtender on
tripod, ISO 1000, exposure at f8 @ 1/1250th (about 2 1/2 stops under,
but flash is pumping up the exposure. I had to push the midrange
brightness on this which increased the noise, but it's still
acceptable, IMO:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7013168&size=lg

In brief, due to reduced noise at high ISO, the new camera is giving
me long-glass capability that I didn't have with any of the other
Pentax digitals.

Re: Opinions needed

2008-03-02 Thread Micah Kleit
I've just gotten back on the list after a break of a few months (my
wife and I had our first child, a baby girl named Alice; there is of
course a voluminous selection of photos of her at
http://pugnax.smugmug.com/gallery/3328936_sHtfP/1/261082219_pijqN)
, and I hope everyone's doing well.

I agree on the brands: I have a Sandisk 4 GB along with the reader
that came with the card, and I've been very happy with both. Dell
screwed me over on an order so they practically gave it to me, so I
don't remember the price. Also have a cheaper 2GB card which I've
been using for a HD video camera.

One thing I've been using around the house is an Eye-Fi 2GB wireless
card. I don't think it's that useful unless you're close to your
computer or another computer where you've already set up an account,
but for taking shots at home, the card has saved me a lot of time in
organizing, as it automatically creates a folder of the photos ou take
wherever you prefer with the day's date and of course uploads the
photos wirelessly; I just trash the photos I don't want to keep, and
edit the ones I do. With a reader the Eye-Fi is around $99.

Buy only SDHC cards for any capacity greater than 2G. Be sure you
also have a fast SDHC compatible card reader as well. Class 6 are the
fastest ones. Class 2s will likely be fine for someone shooting JPEGs

2008-03-02 Thread P. J. Alling
The adaptall mound doesn't work with Autofocus lenses, or more properly
all autofocus lenses have dedicated mounts. In fact you won't even get
auto aperture on these lenses if you get a mount for Canon EOS or
whatever Sony ne. Minolta/Konica calls their autofocus mount. There's
an internal motor to stop down the aperture, and the mount doesn't
supply one.

Newer version of the lens. Unfortunately, there are no (to my knowledge) AF
versions of Adaptall lenses. If you think you will need AF, go for the
adaptall and Pentax AF1.7 adaptor. Excellent combination, which will cost you
about $200 more than just the lens.

My experience of late has been that a lone image will sit in ready for
"review category" for several weeks.
If I up load an additional image during this time frame, I'll get an

Go figure.

Re: K20D PEF Files On a Mac?

2008-03-02 Thread David Savage
Well I think the the Pentax software handles the high ISO (1600+) shots better.

I took some at ISO 3200 in mixed WB lighting & adjusting the white
balance in ACR introduced some interesting noise. The same shot
processed in PhotoLab was much better.

I hate using PPL though. It's slow, has an awkward interface. (and did
I mention it's slow).

I just hope that Adobe bring out an update soon.

Cheers,

Dave

Re: K20D PEF Files On a Mac?

2008-03-02 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
No. It's still crap software.

There are only two reasons to use PPL ...

- So you can obtain the same JPEG rendering as the camera produces.
- Because it's free.

To the first, if that's what I wanted, I'd make the image processing
settings on the camera and not waste my time with post processing.

To the second, I already have better tools that work with all my RAW
image files.

I ignore the voting nonsense entirely. I disagree with the concept
and don't waste any energy thinking about it.

I post a batch of photos now and then. Some are "accepted". Most are
not. Sometimes I notice which are which before I post another batch.
Sometimes not.

Sadly, the voting system makes me not care at all.

Re: Need advice about 300mm 2.8 (I'm a lucky dog)

2008-03-02 Thread Francis
Thanks for your help guys!
The Pentax A and FA versions I've seen so far are, for me, prohibitively
expensive (2,000.00 -3,500.00). Do old beaters (that still work) ever
sell for < 1000 ?

Mike: when you said "You can get an AF version that will work with all
present Pentax DSLRs" are you referring to a AF version of the adapter?
Or a newer version of the lens? If the latter, do you know if these are
also "adaplall" so that if I found one in Canon/Nikon mount I could just
get a new adapter?

Thanks again,
Francis - (foaming at the mouth)

mike wilson wrote:

Happy birthday. The Tamron is an excellent lens, so close in imaging

difficult to distinguish between them. The manual focus version uses an
adaptor mount that allows you to choose between A, M or screwmount Pentax
cameras. Or most other popular mounts. The adaptors are about £50 new but not
so easy to find like that, these days. You can get an AF version that will
work with all present Pentax DSLRs. Or you could get the Pentax AF 1.7

I like the texture especially on the wall where there letters are

Well, why the hell not?

When we lived in St. Louis, the county was still enforcing "Blue Laws".
Basically, you couldn't buy or sell booze from 1am to noon on Sundays.
(I may be off an hour or two on the time.) Once, after a very rude
cashier pulled my sixer off the conveyor and proceeded to scold me for
trying to buy the stuff at 11:45am, I told him that the only people who
cared if I bought it were in church and couldn't see the sin going down
anyway.
