K-mount Cosina

2008-03-22 Thread Sandy Harris
I live in China, went rummaging round the local flea
market today. Found a Cosina RT-1 Super, which
appears to be a K-mount SLR, with a couple of
Ricoh lenses.

Oddly, that camera is not in either of these lists of
Cosina products:
http://www.diecastdeluxe.com/cosina.html
http://www.camerapedia.org/wiki/Cosina

Web searches for it turn up only sites in Chinese
or Japanese, some with Googl'es "this site may
damage your computer" warning. One without
that warning, and with pictures, is:
http://exchange.xitek.com/showexchange.php?ex_threadid=123410

Anyone recognise this device?

But I was a bit disappointed. Call me literal-minded, but I was

Some have mentioned cropping the lower LH corner. My vote is actually for

RE: PESO: Cover Driving (and GESO)

2008-03-22 Thread Bob W
That's a classic shot.

You realise, of course, that on an international list like this very
few of the people have any idea what's going on there, and you're
going to have to explain what's happening in the pictures to the
people who don't have a clue about cricket.

Like the English.

That's interesting. The way the light and shadow work against the
curves makes it look like a solarisation or Sabatier effect (is that
the right word) and consequently reminds me of Man Ray, rather
unusually.

Re: K-mount Cosina

I've seen the Cosina Collector list before - it's a bit of a work in progress.
I don't think anyone really knows how many models Cosina have produced over the
years.

I don't recognise the RT-1 specifically but I gave my son a CT-1 when he was
about 18. It was second hand then and it's still going 15 years later. They
were pretty rugged beasts.

Re: On the Verandah

2008-03-22 Thread Rick Womer
Thanks for the comments, everyone!

This was not an easy shot. On the other side of the
ballusters it was a bright, bright sunny day; any bit
of background leaking through became a blown-out
highlight. That greatly constrained my choice of
focal lengths.

I tried various crops but liked this one the best. I
might try a crop where the square vertical post is,
though...

cheers,

Rick

Re: PESO: Rowan Oak

2008-03-22 Thread Paul Stenquist
I read The Sanctuary. The Snopes trilogy rings a bell but doesn't
come to mind. I took a Faulkner course in grad school but haven't
really touched him since. I should. I don't read enough these day,
perhaps because I spend so much time writing on a computer. My eyes
are worn out by the time I get home from work.

I did pick up "As I Lay Dying" again last summer because I wanted to
revisit the working of the narrative. I wrote a novel about a
psychotic advertising writer, who slips back and forth from one
personality to another. At first one personality is dominant then the
other takes over. It's written in first person, present tense, so I
had to give some thought to making the narrative coherent. I
eventually settled on starting a new chapter every time the narrator
switches. The first chapter narrated by the subordinate personality
is only one sentence. As the story ends, he is the sole narrator.
Seems to work, but I don't know if others will find it of interest.
Haven't really had a chance to look for an agent let alone a
publisher. I've heard that's near impossible. Someday I'll try. By
the way, it's not autobiographical, although some of it is based on
personal experience:-).

Re: GESO 2008 - 38-43 - GDG

2008-03-22 Thread Paul Stenquist
I like the third and fourth in the series very much. Good, graphic
images, well rendered. On some of the other pics, the geometry of
the liens and the cropped elements (like the barricade horse to the
left of the door on one shot) prove a distraction to me. I want to
like the first one. The parking lot lines and numbers are
interesting. I'm not sure about the suggestion of elements in the
background here. Perhaps they are more visible in a print or when
viewed against a frame that is other than white. Some interesting
experiments overall, and, as usual, excellent rendering.

With a young John Hurt as Caligula, no less. Although to my mind the
best characterization by far is Sian Phillips as Livia. Not to forget
Brian Blessed as a cheerful (albeit confused) Augustus.

One of these years we're going to break down and buy the DVD set.

Without the suits we would have been fighting hard for our lifes from

Re: White Balance Problem

2008-03-22 Thread David J Brooks
Bill, just to side track a tad,

Have you tried the expo disk.

I was shooting in the some what bad indoor horse place today. I had
the older arena, with higher, plastic covered windows on the South,
East and West side. As this was dressage, were they are all over the
arena, i decided to go with a pre set WB with the disk, instead of the
cloudy -1 i do in the brighter arena. One side will be bright, one
side dark and one side more light from the mecury type lights. I took
an averag e of the lighting.
I'm down loading the first batch now, but i looked at a few and they
seem decent enough, to at least get some good results.

Might be worth a try in that indoor place.

I have also heard people use an old coffee can plastic lid in stead of
the expo disk.

Fwd: [OM] FF Sony

Seen on another list, seemed equally off-topic but interesting here.

Will Pentax become a player here? Will any hats be eaten?
"One is a fluke, two is coincidence, three is enemy action."

Certainly Samsung has the chip technology to compete with
anyone, Hoya has raw glass, and Pentax has everything else.
So maybe they will.

News is out about the FF Sony A900 with 25MP. Competitively brilliant
by making a smaller camera with an add on vertical grip. Looks like
Sony is quite serious about being the third major player in digital
 photography.

Yes, quite small, in the same general area as ME/MX or OMn.
Looking at Vivitars on the web, it is very close to this:
http://www.pbase.com/cameras/vivitar/v4000
Has the grip/bulge on right, but the Cosina I saw was all
black.

I did not check that. There were distractions; other customers
and other cameras -- assorted Chinese ones, some Russian,
a fairly decent Rolliflex TLR and a Mamiya RB 67 in dreadful
shape.

Kind of old news. I expect Pentax will have to eventually produce a
~24mm x ~36mm sensor SLR but they won't while they can still sell.APS C
sensor Cameras and lenses. Pentax has dropped all it's FF lenses except
for the DFA macros, so I doubt that their immediate plans call for a FF
sensor camera, they have nothing to mount on it.

Interesting to see that it's finally official (and officially named the
A900). Pretty ignorant write-up, though. Asking if it's going to compete
with the performance of the Nikon D3. The answer is NO - it's not going
to be targeted at sports shooters like the D3; it has twice the pixels,
which will slow down the data throughput, and the pixels are half the
size, so they'll be noisier. Still has amazing potential, though.

There are a handful of Nikon-supported pros already shooting with
prototypes of the 25-megapixel full-frame Nikon (presumably to be called
D3x) that uses this sensor (or a variation thereof).

That's a very big camera. But well-featured and full-frame. Sony make
first rate broadcast TV cameras - I wouldn't buy anything else - but
breaking into the pro stills market will be very difficult. Based on my
experience, and if I was shooting pro stills, I'd give it a punt - but
the lens choice would be the show-stopper. If they made it in Nikon,
Canon, or even Pentax mount, well - that's different.

Re: There's no bad weather

2008-03-22 Thread Bob Sullivan
Ralf,

That's an excellent shot.
I am a US train hobbyist and know why they set-up on that curve.
It gives an excellent perspective on the train.
You have a powerful image of the front of the locomotive AND
a look at the rest of the train as it rounds the curve.

Furthermore, they are not all the same trains.
As I model an old, now merged midwestern railroad,
I treasure old pictures of equipment now retired to scrap.
Sometimes each locomotive is unique.

Re: Pentax SLR lineup

2008-03-22 Thread Adam Maas
Only Canon continues to sell a full line of Film SLR's, and that's
likely as much a case of having a large number of NOS items as
anything else. Nikon still makes one and also sells a second and
Cosina makes a number of semi-identical ones including the second
Nikon. There's also a chinese manufacturer who makes semi-clones of
the Cosina as well as K100 clones and of course Leica who still makes
the R9.

Everybody else is out of the 35mm gig.

Tis indeed a big thing. There are plenty of good Konica-Minolta AF
lenses, and the line of CZ lenses that are coming out for the Sony
cameras are likely to be excellent.

Still too early to tell how they're going to do in the long run, but
given Sony I think the camera will be competitive on features and

Perhaps what Sony is hoping for is to make sales of packages that
include both still and video cameras. *You* wouldn't buy such a package,
but corporate clients with technically ignorant purchasing departments
might. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Sony started working that angle
aggressively.

If it is the old Maxxum AF mount, then the lens line has a longer history than
the Canon EOS

This one seems to be well recommended.

Ok, it's time for me to be educated.
Most of the street photography that is posted, I just don't get. Some of us are
seeing wonderful
images, I'm seeing crap.
Since many of the people who like and shoot this sort of work are people who's
knowledge I have
a lot of respect for, I have to presume that my education is lacking.
So, what is it that makes a street grabshot good? What are the necessary
elements to make it
succesful?

I thank you in advance for your time and patience in explaining this to me.

I'm thinking of the Data Robotics unit for external storage, not as a working
drive. I have five
drives in my computer, and will be adding a sixth at some point, removing a
Gigabyte I-Ram to
make room for it. My final drive configuration will be 2 striped pairs and one
mirrored drive in
the computer. This will give me pretty much all the drive performance I need,
but I like the
idea of an external array for redundant data storage.
I'm thinking that for this purpose, a USB interface will be fine, though
obviously an eSata or
Firewire would be better.

What about a Network Attached Storage system?

I'm seriously considering a 2TB array (1.5TB RAID 5) for external image storage.
That can be hooked up with GB ethernet, although I'll probably end up using the

If performance isn't an issue, yeah, it will work. I did a test
running a system clone to both 100G FW400 and 100G USB 2.0 drives of
otherwise identical spec. The FW400 clone took 30% less time than the
USB 2.0 clone. That's a big hit when you're talking about 50 Gbytes
of data. The FW800 interface is almost exactly twice as fast as the
FW400 too, it completes the same clone in about 52% of the time that
the FW400 drive does.

My config is two internal SATA drives setup as a 1T single volume
RAID, which mirrors out to a standalone 1T external and another 1T
dual-drive RAID volume through FW800 on backups. Performance is very
good.

Could you expand on this idea? Perhaps point me in the direction of some
hardware options? Right
now, I have a 500gb mirrored drive that I am using for internal storage, and a
couple of 750gb
external drives that I manually back up to from time to time, But I would
really like a better
external storage solution, especially if it would free up an internal drive for
striping.

As long as Sony maintains backwards compatability with the Screwdriver AF

should be in good shape to reel in the old Maxxum users (at least the ones who

I haven't tried the expo disc, though I suspect I have something similar tucked

Once upon a time I bought a plastic stick on the lens thing that was supposed
to turn a TTL

The Hungarians, who are all aliens, invented street photography and
looked for 'little moments'. It is the instantaneous recognition, to
paraphrase HCB, of the shapes, light, composition and event in a way
that reveals something interesting about the way the world is.
Discussions about it usually sound pretentious and arty-farty, but I
will take the risk and compare it with poetry. At its best it distills
a huge amount of meaning into a small form which resonates and
operates on several levels simultaneously.

Not all street photography is good, however. The problem is that most
of it is crap, but has become surrounded by a lot of Pseuds'
Corner-ish nonsense. Often it draws extreme reactions, from 'the
Emperor has no clothes on' (usually true) to 'the Emperor's every fart
smells like Chanel No. 5' (never true - a fart always smells like
Chanel number twos).

There are a lot of good things about Godfrey's picture, but in the end
I don't think it quite works because of the man coming in from the
right. I do like the visual echo between the big globe thing and the
logo on the menus outside. I also like the empty space and the empty
chairs, and the rhythm of the menu cards against each other and their
reflections.

The woman on the left seems to be aware of the camera and that for me
also distracts somewhat; had she seemed unaware then the 3 different
expressions of the main people would have been a considerable boost,
each in their own world.

Frustrated With AF Problems

2008-03-22 Thread Joseph Tainter
My defective DA* 16-50 is ready to go to Pentax to correct the fact that
it won't autofocus to infinity at 16 mm on the K20D. The K20D has to go
with it.

Before sending them off I thought I would check the focus asjustment of
the DA* 50-135. I tested it at 135 mm, figuring that the most rigorous
test would be at that focal length because that's where the depth of
field is smallest. It turns out that an adjustment of -4 gives the
sharpest distance focus at that focal length. But then I noticed that
when I zoom the lens to 50 mm it now autofocuses beyond infinity, and
the images are not sharp.

Arghhh! Okay, I guess the DA* 50-135 has to go to Pentax too to be
calibrated to the K20D. But this is disturbing and frustrating. I have
been concerned that it may be difficult or impossible to adjust the AF
of zoom lenses through the K20D--adjusting for correct focus at one
focal length could mean incorrect focus elsewhere. What I have seen so
far (with both DA* lenses) confirms that suspicion.
But there are larger implications:

1. Does this mean that I have to give up using autofocus zoom lenses if
their focus cannot be uniformly adjusted?

2. Does this mean that every time I buy a new camera I have to send the
body and all of my zoom lenses to Pentax to be calibrated to each other?

3. Does this mean that every time I buy a new zoom lens I have to send
it and all bodies currently in use to Pentax?

Or did I just get three bad DA* lenses (this is my second DA* 50-135)
and two bad K20D bodies?

That's about $3000 worth of gear that I can't use.

(Yes, I know, some of you will want to reply that your zoom lenses work
fine. Please don't.)

Frustrated, frustrated, frustrated.

Joe
