Re: K10D is back, again

2008-04-15 Thread Marcus A. Hofmann
Just out of curiosity, is there some standard way to test this? I have
not seen any focusing issues with my camera and lenses (because so
many pictures are out of focus, which is of course user error), but I
was wondering if there is a way to find out.

Thanks.

Thanks for the feedbakc Jack. Didn't want another bloom in the middle
pic, so I looked for a frame that would maintain some balance yet
push the flower off to the side. I have to disagree in regard to the
background. I shot some at a wider ap that were much smoother, but I
prefer the texture of this one.

4cm is huge. That's not on the order of matching up lenses, as with
the K20D. Either there's a major mirror box problem that they're
missing or the lens is severely out of whack. Is it out of whack when
you manual focus as well? If so, it's probably the mirror box.

I seem to trot this one out every year or so.
Anyway, this pictures shows how vicious cats can be.
This is a picture of a cat blinding a dog that got to close.
Warning, this is a very graphic representation of what can happen when dogs
and cats are allowed to be together.

Initial test with the new DA 50 F2,8, still shows about a 4cm back
focus at F2.8.

So now what, send in the 50, the FA 100, back with the camera. Pentax
said all i ok, and if i'm not happy, to do just that.,

If so, do they "match up" the lenses like the K20D does.

This is so bogus, i can see no why people get fed up and switch.
Courior bills are going to be high on this.

The "Chateau Moat" photo, loire_21, and "Loire Fog and Trees",

Mark, my last post on this subject indicated I has registered and

I was initially skeptical. A basic learned response. If someone had
information to the contrary, my suspicions might have been allayed by
their advice.

These are great. Like Frank, I like 'Old Farm Building' and also the

Frank: These shots Cheesecake & Cigarette Girl are great fun. Yes, I see
the similarity in portrait and woman, though I did read the other posts 1st
before I looked, so I cheated a bit. Excellent photos, Frank. Really enjoy
your work--oh, before I forget--about the photo the Look--when I first saw
that shot my 1st thought was "so they let them read the paper while in a

Ann: I agree with you about the left crop. A tighter crop on the left
makes the frame feel cramped, though I do appreciate the validity of
Godfrey's suggestion. But the right side is pretty tight, and she's looking
to the left, & a tighter left crop chops off the graffiti making the left
side feel unfinished to me. Godfrey's right about the repetition of twos.
The sign of the two people images between the two "couples" is fantastic.
Sounds like it was a really great assignment--must have been tons of fun.
Also, I have had a quick look-around on your site; the bw poultry shop photo
is a great favorite of mine.

Great work here, Ann. Big cheers, Christine

Don't worry about it. Unfortunately, the potato box really does
detract from it, IMHO. I mean, I like the photo, but the only way to
get rid of that eyesore would be to do something in PS that I don't
like doing, so I'm forced (or to be more precise, I'm forcing myself)
to live with it.

I was just funnin' with you guys (this response is for Jack, too, as I
see he's responded to the potato box thing, too) with my reply to der

Hmm. I like some things about this and find others distracting.

The woman and the picture on the wall are very much the relationship
of the photo. Her insouciant pose and the strange contradiction of
the garb and potato box tray just work.

The light is very flat, dead on casting hard shadows. That almost
works although I'd like it more if there was just a little bit of
modeling to the skin tones. The table edge jutting in from the the
left at mid-thigh height is distracting. I see no good way to just
crop it out ... maybe some artful cloning would work.

Good stuff.

Nice Ann! I like it a lot. Perhaps a little crop off the left end

No, the numbers are correct. The second figure is the netto data
throughput which takes into consideration the protocol overhead, which
is considerable with the wireless protocols.

Calculate the netto figures:

3,2 / 21 * 250 = 38 (~37,5)

And possibly extinct. Even if there are any left, given how long it's
been since the last well-documented sighting, I suspect that you'll have
to spend enough time stalking it that $10,000 will work out to be
something less than minimum wage. ;-)

PESO: on the N train

2008-04-15 Thread ann sanfedele
Did a photo shoot yesterday for a young lady who wanted to have photos
of herself and her boyfriend
romping around NY - they are from Toronto - not the "this is me in
front of the Empire State" type -
although it turns out she kinda did want some of those... She hired me
based on my gallery on line
and had said she particularly liked my black and white stuff of Paris
and the Scrabblers...

It was a difficult job - some stuff they wanted was undoable given the
time frame...
But I kinda liked this one:

Sorry about the password on this one but I don't want to go "whole
world" on my site with this yet..

Hmm. 540 = 54 x 10, but 250x is not 21x x 10.

At least one of those numbers is wrong :-)

Re: Ozark bird photography anyone?

2008-04-15 Thread Doug Brewer
I grew up a little over an hour from the Buffalo, and spent innumerable
weekends on the Ponca-to-Pruitt run in all manner of weather. It's a
treasure.

Matter of fact, the PDML as we know it can be tied to a trip I made to
the Buffalo River with the girl who is now my wife. We spotted a Snowy
Egret out there and silently floated our canoe as near as we could so I
could take a photo with my little drugstore P&S camera.

Getting the prints back and discovering that the wide angle lens of the
camera meant a tiny Egret and a lot of environment led me to thinking
I'd like to get a an SLR and longer lens. Not long after that I bought a
Practica in a pawn shop. It came with 50mm, 28mm and 135mm lenses, and I
began my photographic journey with that kit, adding a 20mm and a 200mm
along the way before moving to a Minolta X370 and then to my first
Pentax, a ZX-5.

And here we are.

Never saw an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, though.

At least, none that I recall.

USB 1.1: 12 Mbit/s = 1,5 MB/s (10x)
USB 2.0: 480 Mbit/s = 60 MB/s (400x)
Bluetooth: 3 Mbit/s = 375 kB/s (2.5x)

The speed notation is a factor of the speed of a single-speed CD
writer. It is used for other media types like SD cards as well. A
speed of 1x means 150KB/sec. The SD 2.0 specification (SDHC) also
defines speed-classes. Class 4 devices must deliver read/write speeds
of at least 4 MB/sec (~25x).

In comparison to state-of-the-art technology, a class 4 device is
really _slow_. It will most probably slow down any modern digital
camera.

A modern, fast card delivers read/write speeds around or exceeding 20
MB/sec (133x/150x). The SanDisk Extreme III that I always use are
guaranteed to deliver a minimum of 20 MB/sec. They also come with a
lifetime guarantee, although I have yet so find or hear of someone who
actually ever had problems with a Sandisk Extreme III. Panasonic SDHC
cards are said to be fast and reliable, too, but they are also a
little more expensive.

Don't know. It says on the packaging - "Minimum 6Mb/second" which is faster
than any I have at the moment. Seems to take about 2-3 seconds to write a file
with them. There are 8 & 16Gb cards there, too. That's a few too many eggs in
the basket for me.

Ozark bird photography anyone?

2008-04-15 Thread Sandy Harris
There's a $10,000 reward for finding and photgraphing an
ivory-billed woodpecker:

http://news.mongabay.com/2006/0926-woodpecker.html

Probably not easy; they're nearly extinct and live in swamps.
