Re: PESO: Near the Reichstag

2008-07-30 Thread Brian Walters
Hi Rick

That's really a very effective composition and nicely executed.

The curve of the canal, the boat, the reflection in the glass wall of
the building and the man looking at the crosses all combine to give the
scene perfect balance and some poignancy.

Excellent use of a fisheye!

Cheers

I think I prefer the uncropped version. Yes, the equipment in the front
sort of gets in the way, but I prefer looking at it to the feeling that
something is missing, which I get from the cropped variant.

And it's a rather good shot either way...

Re: Newbie - Quest about batteries

2008-07-30 Thread Brian Walters
Hi Bong

I don't know about the Minolta SRT101 specifically but I have several
old cameras that were originally designed to use the 625 Mercury
battery. I've found that the 1.5 volt silver oxide 625 cells work OK.
The higher voltage may affect the metering but not sufficient to cause
problems with print film (slide film might be more sensitive but it
should be possible to apply some exposure compensation).

Wein cells are zinc-air batteries that start to discharge once the
protective tab is removed from the base of the cell. Standard hearing
aid batteries are also zinc-air and work well. They are also much
cheaper than Wein cells. The 675 hearing aid batteries come in packs of
four for much the same price as a single Wein cell. They are smaller in
diameter than the 625 but a bit of padding around the cell keeps them in
place.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the Wein cells.

Cheers

Brian

Re: PESO (Boris) Weeks 20 through 30

2008-07-30 Thread Tim Øsleby
I think 20 - 30 is a mixed bag.

I like 23, thats clever seen and executed.

20, 21 and 22 does not speak to me,

Neither does 25 and 26, mainly because I don't find the motifs
interesting. Maybe, that's me. I don't know. But I do think you needs
to explore them deeper to make them interesting.

27 aint very original, but I do like it.

I can't make up my mind about 28. It is pretty, but I wish the water
had a more soothing effect.

29 is another clever one. Well done.

I like 30 because of the colours. The pattern in the tiles, and the
texture in the background adds more interest.

This gives a total score of 50'% keepers, that ain't bad :-)

It's a nice photo of a couple of men who clearly get along.

The fact that I can see some audience members smiling as well helps
the image.

If I could change anything (and I can't!) it would be to get more
separation between the man on the left's mouth and the trees behind
him - but I don't think there is any post-processing which could help
that without wrecking the photo.

The "story" as you describe it seems to be well-told with this photo.

Tim,

I like the photo, and it clearly conveys the story. I'm not so keen on the
rendition, though. If this had been shot on film, I would say that your camera
had a light leak on the right side of the frame. The whole thing could use
more contrast.

Rick,
I really like this shot. It is much better than the previous one.
You have encompassed the whole scene with this shot.
You see the building, the crosses, the river and the boat.
The person gives it scale, and the fish-eye lens adds a bit to the
modern architecture.
(I love how the wall on the left bends in over the scene.)
Excellent shot!

Re: PESO - Bonding in public

2008-07-30 Thread Tim Øsleby
Thanks Rick. This is valueable input.

The rendering could have been better, I agree on that.

The problem is a result of a high contrast situation. The two men in
shadow, and the crowd in the background in direct sun. Parts of the
crowd are totally blown out. And I need a hint of the smiling faces in
the crowd to make the picture work.
So the rendering is basically an attempt to lower the contrast,
without loosing to much details in the important parts. Your comment
suggests I failed.

I'll see if I'm able to get more out of the frame.

Don't bother with the Wein cells.

You might want to lo look for an MR-9 adapter. I think the SRT-101 is
fairly voltage sensitive. The adapters are kind of pricey but they're a
lot cheaper than having your camera re-calibrated for a higher voltage
if it can be done at all. I don't know if these people will do overseas
orders but at least you know what it looks like from this.

Hi, John.

I currently have an Energizer E387S in my SP500. It's a perfect fit (it
even has the little plastic ring already on it). Since most of the
Spotmatics have a bridge circuit, voltage differences won't matter.
This is not true for the F, Electro, ES or ESII. I get my batteries
from http://www.swatchbattery.com/ since I can rarely find them locally.

Take a look at http://photoethnography.com/ClassicCameras/batteries.html

I'll also second the recommendation to join the Yahoo Spotmatic group.
As soon as you're in, you'll get a series of email messages with several
documents attached. One of them will be the battery list. Alternately,
their files are available at their Yahoo site. If you'd like, I can
email the battery list to you directly. Just let me know.

Agreed. The Wein cell is not necessary for a camera with a bridge
circuit, like the Spotmatic. The only way I'd ever mess with those
things is if I had a camera wouldn't work properly without one.

Wow! Those are expensive!
Besides the physical spacer, all that's in them is a single Schottky
barrier diode (which gives a 0.2 Volt drop when forward biased - just
what you need). I'd just get a Schottky diode from an electronics
supplier for a dollar or so and solder it in line with the power lead to
the battery (you only have to remove the camera's base plate, IIRC). But
even having a technician solder it in shouldn't be too expensive.

If your background is blurred, I would seriously doubt any stitching
software would be able to line up each photo correctly. The programs
I've used rely on sharp detail and contrast in order to line things up,
and I was never able to get them to stitch images well that had too much
blur to them. I'd say bite the bullet and do it by hand.

Good luck!

Yeah, like that. I'm not sure mine is going to work out so well,
though. The background is a lot closer, a lot more complex, and pretty
blurred. That's why I asked ... I figure that blurry background is
going to put a wrench in the works for the auto-stitching software. :-)

I guess what I meant was that in regular panoramas, the photographer is
typically trying to make it look like it was one huge exposure in one
instant. In the case of the one you showed of the airplane, and the one
I'm thinking of trying, the movement of time through the exposures is a
critical part of the composition, rather than being an impediment.

That's pretty much what I both expected and feared. In the race photos,
the background is pretty close, so it's heavily blurred. The only
things in the frame that approach sharpness are the cars that are the
subject of the shot, and the overlap doesn't include the cars. So it
sounds like I can expect the automated stitchers to have trouble setting
up the registration automatically.

Personally, I like the newer one ('249) better. The overall emptiness
of the space contrasted with the handful of people in the deep
background and the person in the foreground give scale to the space and
the building. The emptiness of the space and the looming mass of the
building work in contrast to the diminutive scale of the crosses and
people. A sad, somewhat forlorn or contemplative mood, which seems
appropriate for that place.

Most of that stuff is there in the earlier photo ('895), but in much
smaller doses.

There are (or used to be) instructions on the net for modifying a dead
625 cell with a Schottky diode so that you can fit a (smaller diameter)
675 cell inside the 625 casing. I did this once, using a kit I bought
on EBay. It worked, much to my surprise! However, doing the
modification to the 625 cell was at the limit of my ham fisted ability,
so I've never bothered again.

To my taste, she comes across as harsh, which Ken interpreted as having a
hard time smiling. I tried to pick two that showed some warmth, or at least
mirth in her eyes. Again, just my taste, but I think softer lighting might
have toned down some of the 'tough broad' look that I think she exudes.

Just my thoughts, I hope this works out for both of you...

settled on these two. Hope it helps. Looks like folks have been great in
helping you out, so you should get some good advice. Big cheers, Christine

Re: GESO: Kimberly

2008-07-30 Thread Paul Stenquist
Thanks Bill. Your first pick is the consensus favorite. I like your
second pick as well, but the pose is a bit unnatural.

The tough, no-smile look is what sells these days. Look at Vogue or
one of the fashion supplements to the NY Times. But that aside,
smiles just don't work for Kimberly. When she smiles with her mouth
closed, those dimples at the edge of her mouth become extreme.
(They're greatly softened here as it is.) When she smiles with her
mouth open, her face appears to be far too long.

Good to hear from you, Mr. Sawyer.

thanks for the Kimberly feedback

2008-07-30 Thread Paul Stenquist
Many thanks to all who have responded or who might still respond.
It's been very helpful. 6780 is far and away the favorite, with a
number of others closely matched for second place. I had already made
a big print of 6780 for my book, and I suspect Kimberly will want one
as well.

M28/2.8 vs. A28/2.8

2008-07-30 Thread Scott Loveless
Hello again, Margaret.

Would anyone be able to comment on the M28/2.8 AND the A28/2.8.
Preferences? I'm mostly interested in optics and ergonomics. The 'A'
setting is not important to me at this point.

Thanks!

2008-07-30 Thread Anthony Farr
I'm not Margaret, however

Optically, these lenses will be the same formula. The M lens will be better
built. The A lens will have better coatings therefore better flare
resistance.

The A lens will integrate with all exposure modes (except MTF aware modes as
it has no chip).

Anthony Farr

Anthony Farr wrote:

Me neither.

> Optically, these lenses will be the same formula.

Sorry Anthony, but NO. They are very different lenses (both formula and
performance have very little to share).

Recalling a 10-years old comparison, the M lens wins very easy when
considering 3D effect, while the A lens outperforms its counterpart about
center-to-edge performance (resolution/sharpness).
Hence:
1 - Choose the M for shooting real-life subjects in their environment
(they'll pop out from the background) without worrying too much about
resolution at edges.
2 - Select the A lens for shooting targets, repro work, architecture,
graffiti, and the like.

> The M lens will be better built.

Never noticed a difference worth considering.

> The A lens will have better coatings therefore better flare resistance.

That's possible, but I can neither confirm nor deny.
