Great story - I'd love to see the place... I never ate moose, but I
did eat reindeer sausage in Alaska...
I ate it the first time not realizing it was actually reindeer - Had
trouble eating it after I found out it was.
We ate a lot of Chinese food on our auto trips through the Northwest and
Alaska some amazingly good
stuff in remote places.

Sorry I missed your visit, Fernando!

Fascinating to see what others see in a place I see every day...
I'm generally not a fan of wide angle lenses but this was a fun series
6 and 8 jump out at me the most... 8 is a good example of where a wide
really has
a purpose... I'd say 6 was my fave tho

Carrying this to the (il)logical extreme ...
If you leave the lenscap on it produces results indistinguishable
from those take with lenses that are far more expensive.

Thanks, Jostein. I'm glad it's good. It's rather expensive. I've thought it
would sell for perhaps 75-100 USD. I had never heard of this lens before, when
the guy asked me. I thought it was an f4 100mm macro lens. Anyway, I'll
announce it on the list before submitting it to ebay along with some other
stuff - like a F 70-200mm and a AF500 FTZ flash and a MZ5n body.

Today's excursion brought the Cottrell/Øksne team to the glacier Folgefonna.

Here's Cotty on ice:
http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/displayimage.php?pos=-122

And a little landscape, just off the beaten track. Which you can see
in the background, actually, in the form of an alpint skiing track.
Still open for business, in August.
http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/displayimage.php?pos=-123

Too bad the weather was so poor... Forecast looks better for tomorrow,
and will hopefully grace us with some nice light on the next leg on
our trip. No more glaciers in store, though. We're heading out of the
fjords into the archipelagos.

I used the trip as an excuse to test drive the DA12-24/4 so all these
photos are shot with that lens and the K10D.

Re: M 2.8 100mm

2008-08-07 Thread AlunFoto
I have one. Haven't used it since going digital, so I can't really
tell you how it performs with a chip. With film, however, it was my
favourite lens for a long time. It is not very sharp at f/2.8, but
improves very nicely when stopped down to f/4. At least if my sample
was anything to go by. It is also a quite small lens, discreet, if you
like.

I have no idea what it would fetch in an auction, though. Iirc, I
bought mine for NOK 900 in a local shop some 12 years ago. That would
be about USD 180 by today's exchange rate.

PESOs - Cotty on ice

2008-08-07 Thread AlunFoto
Today's excursion brought the Cottrell/Øksne team to the glacier Folgefonna.

Here's Cotty on ice:
http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/displayimage.php?pos=-122

And a little landscape, just off the beaten track. Which you can see
in the background, actually, in the form of an alpint skiing track.
Still open for business, in August.
http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/displayimage.php?pos=-123

Too bad the weather was so poor... Forecast looks better for tomorrow,
and will hopefully grace us with some nice light on the next leg on
our trip. No more glaciers in store, though. We're heading out of the
fjords into the archipelagos.

Perhaps I should buy it myself. I already got the 200mm f4 and a 2.5 135mm

I thought perhaps it was like the 2.0 85mm - not sharp below f.5.6 og 8... Got
rid of mine years ago. But I guess it's better than that?

interesting new bag from Lowepro ...

2008-08-07 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I happened to see the new Lowepro Flipside advertised in a recent PDN
issue so I looked it up.

It's a slim backpack arrangement ... two sizes available ... with what
looks like plenty of space for a day long wander with a complete kit
(including tripod carrier). Digital camera review did a good review of
it including a utube video (pentax fans: he shows the 300 model with
K10D equipment in the video, so watch and cheer and also get a feel
for how it works with a K10/20D and grip and several lenses... :).

http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3356&review=lowepro+flipside

I'm impressed. It looks like a good bag for day long walks and
carrying with minimal stress on back and neck, it's shape and design
will keep it from catching on doors, walls, etc as you move through
airports and such. The inverted access means that if you are the type
that reaches into the bag constantly to change lenses it won't be
quite so good, but if you tend to work with one or two lenses for
extended periods of time it should be just right.

Anyway, I found it quite interesting and the price isn't too high...

The D700 certainly looks to be a superb body. Makes me question
whether I should keep or sell my Nikkor 20/3.5, 105/2.5 and 180/2.8

I don't know whether I'm as excited about it as I am about the

Re: russian 20mm lenses for pentax mount

2008-08-07 Thread Margus Männik
Hi,

I have tried both 20mm Mirs and do own Mir-20M. They're both quite good
on film bodies and K100D, but a little weak (corner resolution issues)
for K10D. Haven't tried my "20" with K20D.
Mir-20 has two versions and at soviet (and post-soviet) times people
used to say that older one
(http://static1.nagi.ee/i/p/46/97/0225469754e645_m.jpg ) was better than
newer one (http://www.rugift.com/images/mir_20m.jpg).
Mir-47K is much newer design and was destignated for LOMO Almaz
(semprofessional) K-bayonet bodies. Some say the optical quality is
improved, others damn the build quality. The sample I tried wasn't any
better than my Mir-20M. I do have Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 20mm f/4
(older, so called zebra-version, M42) in my collection, but I consider
it much worse than Mir-20.

BR, Margus

I like the third one best ... but I have to say I have a problem really
appreciating action shots (any) that freeze the person in action
totally... I know it is done a lot, but I kinda don't get it... And I
think what you saw isn't getting recorded. Maybe just
shooting this kinda thing with a slower shutter speed solves it... but
not , of course, if you want to freeze the action :)

The other little girl is just someone Grace latched onto at the park.
Her first priority is always finding someone to play with. The grown
up girl is the little blonde's cousin. I gave them a card and told
them I'd send them pics.

No-go on my Mac. Blank screen in Firefox3, and Safari just gives me a
still frame. A CUTE still frame, but nonetheless an image not in
motion!

(blank on IE 5.2 for Mac as well). Ah well!

Re: OT: Nikon D700

2008-08-07 Thread Paul Stenquist
A bit yellow/green on the white balance there, but the high ISO
performance is just outstanding. A local pro who shoots a lot of high
buck weddings is using one now as a backup to his D3. It's a great
camera for that type of event. Heck, it's a great camera for
anything. But when you have constantly changing light and near dark
conditions, it's superb.

 G'day All,

Quite an interesting night & the guest speakers were worth going to

Anyway I took one of my old *istD era CF cards with me & had a
 play.
Some of the shots I took can be found here:

 _DSC0413.JPG - ISO 200
 _DSC0416.JPG - ISO 500
 _DSC0420.JPG - ISO 5000
 _DSC0444.JPG - ISO 1600
 _DSC0446.JPG - ISO 1600
 _DSC0447.JPG - ISO 1600

 All shot using a Nikkor AF-D 35mm f2 lens @ f2 (EXIF data
 retained for
 those interested).

These files are straight out of the camera (shooting RAW
 + .jpg). No
PP applied to any of them. I have more interesting examples but
 they
 were shot on RAW only.

When I get the time I'll download Nikon's Capture NX & have a play
 with the RAW files.

Apologies for the OT post, but I thought some might find these
 interesting.

 Cheers,

 Dave

Excellent, Jens. A future conductor there in the making, without doubt.

I know a lot of people think the 21 fps, 1.6 MP mode of the K20D is
