He mentions that he had a lens reversed on a longer focal length.
Here's a shot I did using a similar method:

The monitor had a dot pitch of .22mm, this is not a cropped image.

RE: What plans do you have for old digital SLRs?

2008-08-12 Thread John Coyle
I have only ever twice sold a camera: a Voigtlander Vito CD, which was my
first ever serious camera, and a Fujica ST701n, which was a replacement for
a stolen SV, which had been my first SLR.
I now have several Spotmatics, an SV (bought on a whim because it is
identical to the one stolen, and is a joy to use), an ES, a K2, an ME, an
SFN, an Espio 70 and an MZ-S in Pentax, and a Fed 4 for 35mm film, a
Rolleicord for medium format, and in digital, one compact, an Optio 4WR, and
one SLR, an *ist-D, and I doubt I'll ever sell any of them, being as much of
a lover of classic cameras as a photographer. I've also got a box full of
dead Pentax 35mm and digital compacts of various recent models which came
gratis from a local distributor clear-out.

My workhorse cameras are the MZ-S or SV for film, and the *ist-D for
digital. The Optio is carried in the car, or is used by my wife on the rare
occasions she wants to use a camera. The *ist-D and just two lenses, the
16-45 and 50-200 were what I carried for a recent trip to Egypt and Spain,
and served me very well: the results are excellent and the kit was light and
easy to carry in a small backpack.

I may consider buying the next Pentax digital SLR, depending upon price and
size: I don't need or want a behemoth of a camera which doubles as a
weight-training tool, nor do I really need full-frame - but it would be
interesting to see how my collection of Pentax lenses of various eras
perform on such a sensor. If I do, the *ist-D may go to one of my
granddaughters, who is expressing an interest in photography as a career - I
know, don't encourage her!

I tend to hang onto cameras. In all honestly, I should dump most of my
film cameras. The problem is that I'd keep the nicest one (the MZ-S)
and then get so little for the others it wouldn't be worth selling. I
gave my MX and ZX-7 to the Art dept. for photo classes and I kept the
MZ-S, the Sp500, and the 645. Keeping the SP500 (vs the MX) is
definitely a sentimental choice but it still works fine and it was my
first camera. I'm always amazed how intrigued students are by a
screwmount lens.

Re: OT: Got my book from Blurb.com

2008-08-12 Thread Walter Hamler
Yes, I ordered the 8x10 hardcovers, one of each type. I actually liked
the quality of the picture reproduction on the dust cover version over
the printed directly on the cover. Here are two shots of the book, the
last two on the smugmug page.

http://walthamler.smugmug.com/gallery/4592986_mrB5J#350718693_wbVmC

As you can see the book is a "novel" or short story, 62 pages. It
takes a couple hours to read at one setting if you are a normal
reader.

I am working up some pics to do a photo book of about 12 to 18 pages.
We will see :-)

Darn this is fun!!!

You should have realized by now that "portable" in photographic parlance
means that it has a handle (wheels optional). If it has wheels but no
handle it is "moveable". Weight has never been a consideration to these

I think my Venice book came out pretty well with Blurb. Hardcover,
10.5x8 (?), their mid-size. 40 pages or so.

Then I did a 20-page softcover 7x7 of photos from a family event. 20
pages. Quality was fine, no complaints there, but a 20-page softcover
is just not a very substantial "package." For anything less than
40-60 pages I definitely recommend the hardcover version for gifts.

Speaking of PSUs, though, I've been hoping for a laptop fuel cell unit

Michael Johnston points to this nifty little site with a few

Cindy Sherman and has nothing constructive to say about modern

Contrast this with the humour and humanity of Ruth Bernhard, Nick Ut,

OT Bike update

2008-08-12 Thread David J Brooks
Well, its been a cool wet summer, but i have been managing about 4
days a week on the Norco and am just about
up to a 10K round trip.
Not all ups like Mark and Frank do, but decent grades and work out.

Its 4 k to the old house, then i do some side streets, a small trip in
to a bit of cedar bush, then 4 k back to my place.

Last year, i need to stop every 500m but now i can do it with next to
no stops, except for the traffic light on the
route, which is a nice 30 sec break at 2 k.

No i'm not bringing it to GFM

Well if you mean those big spongy things I couldn't agree more. I have
a thin, flexible, metal-reinforced mat which doubles as screen
protection between the screen and the keyboard when I fold the screen
down. Without anything in between, I tend to get greasy marks on the

I certainly could see where the code was spat out into the HTML
page... but what I'd really like to do is somehow edit the HTML Web
Engine so that it puts that "next" code right in there automatically.
Editing all of the HTML pages (scripted or not) doesn't really appeal.

I'm playing around with the "TTG HTML 1.61 Gallery" engine right now
(third-party freeware) to see if it works out. Seems to generate
clean code although the menus on the right-hand side prior to
generating the gallery are a bit more convoluted than the ones from
Adobe.

Re: Lightroom web gallery modification question

2008-08-12 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
What it does is pretty easy to see if you look at the HTML source
code. On a small test gallery of three photos, I was able to move the
URL into the right position so that the clickTarget action did the
move to the next image rather than a return to the index view. It's
simple: there's an ... bracketing line
which surrounds the display line in each image's HTML
source file. Replace the '../index.html' with the address of the next
photo and you're in. I imagine that a good perl coder could find the
pattern and edit the exported HTML source with only minor manual
intervention.

What I'm not sure is how to prepare a template that would allow
Lightroom to generate this variant of the HTML gallery display, as
editing the source for a gallery with a lot of images is nothing I'd
want to do by hand. I'm sure the information on how to do this is
available somewhere.

Well, I think it's very portable, here's a picture of my first
introduction to a "portable" computer.

It's the size of a Large portable sewing machine. A 17" laptop is petite.

Lightroom web gallery modification question

2008-08-12 Thread Charles Robinson
Here's one thing I'd really like to change about the behavior of the
HTML galleries which are created by Lightroom:

When one clicks on a large image, I'd LOVE it to go to the next
image. Right now, clicking on the large image brings you back to the
index of thumbnails.

Has anyone poked around the innards of the scripting which is
generated by Lightroom to see if there is a way to change the
behavior? Basically, I'd like the large image to behave the same as
the "NEXT" link when clicked.

Seems simple enough, yet complicated.

Hmm. My Dell Precision M50 is showing signs of decrepitude, and that
could be a contender (except that it's probably made in China, and I
don't have any money).

I have an IBM Thinkpad 760ED on which I run Oberon. It's built like a
Victorian khazi.

Lightroom does quite good Flash galleries (if that's not a

Using the Chameleon skin, which is what I use for the PUG, you can
select Settings->Chameleon->Images->Image save protection. It works
pretty well, with or without Java script enabled on the browser.

Lightroom by itself has several very good and light weight flash slide
show templates. Coupled with the Slide Show Pro flash plug-in, it can
produce some very very nice sites with ease.

I built this one in about four minutes using the very simplest flash

Thanks all for looking and commenting.
I've been wanting to do some work in that little area for months. It's the
attic of a house I am renovating, and the light is wonderful. A friend found
us the model and we spent a couple of hours shooting.
The flash gallery is a Photoshop automaton. There are a couple of different
ones available, that was the first one. I did the same series with the other
one, and then played a bit with the code, but I'm not really happy with the
results, especially the placement of the controls, which I can't figure out
how to reposition. At least it makes bigger thumbnails and doesn't have them
dancing around, so that's an improvement over gallery 1.
The entire gallery was just over 1mb, which accounts for it's fast loading.

I'm not a big fan of flash, but I am quite likely going to be doing more
work like this over the next while, and I want a display platform that is
less easy to rip off. Flash gallerys seem more secure than plain HTML
galleries, are there any other options out there?

Re: PUG is up

2008-08-12 Thread Brian Walters
Once again some fine work here:

Favourites? Lots, and mentioning just a few is unfair but these are the
ones that particularly caught my attention.

Tumulus by Filip Nicolai - nicely minimalist
Some architecture and its two architects by Toralf - an unexpected
interpretation of the theme
Brio by Walter Hamler - love those curved trees!
Children playing at Mashid Abdul Gafoor Mosque by Jos van der Hijden -
the ornate design, the shadows and the two children add up to a great
composition
Tower by David Savage - unusual combination of colours, particularly in
the sky
Meis' Masterpiece by frank theriault - eye-catching contrast
An old Russian Church by Ken Waller - I really like the way the
foreground has been included in the composition here
Chicago Blue by Christine Aguila - quite a dramatic building and
enhanced by the reflections

And I also like Churchill Rugby Cup by Yebo Gogo - better late than
never!

Now, if someone can explain to me what "Documentary and Reportage" is
all about, I'll go out a shoot something for next month. :-)>

Like others have said, that's another very nice gallery.

I was going to mention one or two favourites, here, but found that it was
just too hard to pick this time; I pretty much like all the pictures.

Glad to take you there... I think I had the same feeling at the time - I
used Lego a lot myself when I was younger. It was also nice to see how all
sorts of different people at all sorts of ages were happily working
together on their architectural masterpieces.

Great set. No problems with the photos generally, its the thumbnails
that are good as useless. You did the hard work in programming flash
or did you use an album generator?
