I remember.
A lady came into my camera store with a lens that she insisted was falling
apart. It had a couple of largish black specks in it.
That was looking through the lens one way.
The other way revealed a couple of very dead insects on one of the lens
elements.

I remember I once got dust mites inside the mirror housing of my first
camera (Pentax P50). It was pretty weird to see those small,
half-transparent bugs wander across the matte screen. At first I
didn't know what it was, and made the mistake of asking about it in a

Re: OT: Strange bug

2008-08-17 Thread John Francis

That shouldn't be a surprise - it's well documented.
Nowadays it's expected that there will be so-called
"Easter eggs" in any video game. There have always
been in-jokes in animated movies (not to mention the
idea of a 'blooper reel' for animated characters).

Probably the earliest example of humo(u)r of which I have
personal experience was with TECO (the text editor used on
many early DEC systems). The command to create a new file
(rather than edit an existing one) was "MAKE filename".
If you typed "MAKE LOVE", it would create a file called
LOVE, as told. But it would also respond with "NOT WAR?".

And, of course, there is amazing Grace's remark about the
first example of an actual bug being found. It might not
be the world's best joke, but it was definitely a joke.

the reply.

Typical expectations are changing and will continue to change.
Photography can produce more "realistic" images than painting, but as
manipulation methods become better and more commonly used, reality will
have to reside with documentation of the process rather then the final
product.

I agree with your first point but I do think my analogy has some use.
Writing can be either fiction or nonfiction and sensible people look for
documentation to tell the difference. Most people considered
photography to be closer to the visual image generated by the eye than
painting. Their were always manipulated photos and very realistic
paintings, but most of the time people expected photos to be the more
realistic of the two media. Digital photography has made photography
more like writing, and people's expectations will change. It's not a
right or wrong issue; sensible people will become more suspicious.

Hi Ann

We call them McMansions here too. In fact I almost called the PUG image
"McMansions", but I wasn't sure whether it was a universally understood
term. Glad you liked the image.

I can remember singing along to "Little Boxes". It's interesting the
influence that Pete Seeger has had on music. I recently saw a DVD of
Bruce Springsteen performing a host of songs that Seeger either wrote or
performed. It was great stuff and I'm not really a Springsteen fan.

The general consensus in camp was that the salt looked like
an ice cube. :-)

I shot this with the *istD, an M42->K adaptor, a Vivitar 2x
teleconverter, a Diramic 200mm f/3.5, and a reversed SMC
Takumar 55mm f/1.8. I lit it from the side with a Vivitar
5200 on a hotshoe extension cable (the one from the Super
Program era), and used the screen of my PDA as the stage.

I didn't have a reversing ring, but I noticed that the clip-on
hood for an 85/2.8 was the same size at the wide end as the
built-in hood on the 200/3.5 and the same filter-size as the
55.1/8, so I used that to make it easier to stick on the
reversed lens with gaffer's tape. I figured the air space
between the 200 and the 55 wouldn't matter much one way or
the other, since the rays ought to be parallel at that point,
right?

Er ... and I hand-held the camera (braced the business end
of that lens combination on my fist which was against the
table. Adjusted the lighting by trial and error ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H
... I mean 'successive approximation' ;-) ... sliding it
a smidgen closer or farther after each shot.

A picture of the camera and the PDA just after I finished
is here: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3066/2762601219_1dc4284b86_m.jpg
and I blogged it at http://dglenn.livejournal.com/1176441.html

It's scaled down to fit the 1000-pixel limit for free Flickr
users, but that also hides some of the colour fringing seen
in the full soze version (the original is a smidgen over twice
the size of what I posted).

I want to see whether I can manage an even sharper version
sometime. I'm not sure whether the color fringing is all
the fault of the teleconverter, or aberration in each part
of the chain all multiplied together. Though come to think
of it, out-of-focus points wouldn't generate parallel rays
coming out of the reversed 55mm, so maybe the colour fringing
was the cost of sticking that lens hoos in for the convenience
of taping things together?

I _really_like_ doing macro.  :->

The General Lee of the television series was a 1969 Charger. I think this car
matches that criteria. I suppose it's a clone in terms of being an oriinal hemi
Charger. It would be worth much, much more in factory colors if it were not a
clone. More than 100K to be sure. But a couple of General Lee's always show up
at the Dream Cruise. I assume they're created from cars that originally had the
bas 318 cid, two bbl engine. A numbers matching hemi Charger is a very valuable
piece of iron. (Some have sold at auction for a quarter million in U.S.
dollars).

OT: Strange bug

2008-08-17 Thread Bob W
Have a look at this webpage:

http://www.nordicgroup.us/s78/flashlights.html

Scroll down to the section headed 'Commercial Flashlight Holders' and
take a look at the frame on the right hand side. There's a teensy
little flea wandering around inside it.

How strange.

It's an animated gif. Presumably the programmer who wrote the page was
a bit bored at the time.

I shot about 1000 pics on the trip (nothing to some of you machine-
gunners!) but plenty for me. I was brutal and lost 2/3rds of them on the
first edit, the rest all survived but the 90-odd that made it through to
the gallery were all done in a hurry at 700 pixels max. Sorry about
that. I need to work on presentation a lot more. I'll try and bump it up

Fewer than four and it's now over.

I think I'm the only non-lurker PDML'er who showed up. We can no longer
taunt Cesar for oversleeping gate-boy duty a couple of years ago because
Doug Brewer "overslept" the entire weekend: He thought is was *next*
weekend and didn't find out otherwise until Grandfather Mountain PR
Director Landis phoned him up on Friday.

Had four presentations, varying from very, very good to quite poor. The
second was the better of the two presented each day.

I came down a few days early and did some hiking/photography/research
for the book I'm working on. Then helping with logistics for the camera

Oh, the images scale fine, they just scale well beyond the native
resolution of the files, which is not terribly flattering to the more
detailed images which appear soft & fuzzy on a high-res display. This
is one reason why auto-resizing galleries are not a great idea.

I used a program called GPicSync. You load the tracks from the GPS
device and the photos from the camera both onto your hard drive. The
program then matches up the times in the track to the times stamped into
the photos, and it updates the EXIF data to include lat/log/alt
information. There are several other programs like that around if you
do a Google search.

The full magazines are definitely the way to go. What I like best about
them is the way the convey the "space tourist" feel. When I look at the
Apollo 11 archive and click through the first post-landing roll, I get the
feel that these two guys were like super-excited kids on safari or
something--"look at that! look over there! oooh, there's the Earth!
Cool!" It's a very different feeling compared to the polished, professional
test-pilot publicity that the space program sold to the public. I like the
excited tourist perspective a lot better.

Must have been one heck of a ride

Re: Apollo archive

2008-08-17 Thread Toine
You do need a polarizer:

Hasselblad EDC (Electric Data Camera)
This is a specially designed version of the motorized 500EL intended
for use on the surface of the moon, where the first lunar pictures
were taken on 20 July 1969 by Neil Armstrong. The camera is equipped
with a specially designed Biogon lens with a focal length of 60 mm,
with a polarization filter mounted on the lens. A glass plate
(Reseau-Plate), provided with reference crosses which are recorded on
the film during exposure, is in contact with the film, and these
crosses can be seen on all the pictures taken on the moon from 1969 to
1972. The 12 HEDC cameras used on the surface of the moon were left
there. Only the film magazines were brought back.

Parting with some lenses

Anyone in the market for a FA 300mm f2.8? If so, please let me know
off-list (send me a price). I've watched it sit long enough, and finally
can't justify keeping it (I just don't get to use it often enough). My DA
50-135mm lens will be on the market soon as well. I just have to use it
for one more event soon. Again, contact me off-list if interested. Thanks.

P.S.
The 400mm f2.8 is also on the verge of being sold also... but I'm still
too emotionally attached to it at the moment. Check back in a month or two

hi Doug,

the eneloops were pretty decent too since i did leave the backlight on
at moderate levels because i was stopping and entering waypoints every
once in a while. the vista hcx was pretty good. the only time it lost
the signal was when we were inside a 3-km long tunnel (of course)

how do you sync your photos with the gps device? i never used the
garmin to geotag my photos...

That's really just about the only thing that really bugged me in
Bulgaria ... there's a lot of trash on the ground, basically everywhere
outdoors. Part of the problem may have been that I was there before the
leaves started coming out, so the trash was much more visible. But it
was definitely a bit of a downer and it messed up some gorgeous locales
and scenes. I sure hope they get a handle on it. Other that that, the
Plovdiv area is visually delightful, between several thousand years of
history and being nestled in between about three or four mountain ranges
but lying on the banks of the Maritsa river in the central plain. I
hope to visit the Black Sea coast area next March or April and it'll be
interesting to see if there's a difference in the heavily touristy areas
there.

I also used an eTrex Vista HCx on my trip to Bulgaria back in February.
I did the same thing you did, leaving it running and recording my
track all of the time I was out and about. I used Lithium AA batteries
and got about 50 hours of use per pair of batteries with essentially
zero backlight usage, and not one heck of a lot of looking at the screen
at all.

I learned a valuable lesson when I got home and tried to sync the photos
with the tracks: don't change anything about your clock setup on either
device while you're doing this. One night, I was reviewing my shots for
the day, and realized that the K10D thought it was still in Atlanta,
time-zone wise. I changed a setting that I thought would only change
the displayed time zone when on the screen without affecting anything
else. Unfortunately, it changed the times burned into the photos, so I
could only "geolocate" about half of the photos automatically.

Before I mangled the time settings, it worked a treat, though. Most of
the time my eTrex Vista was getting about 6-10m of accuracy, since we
were in a city in hilly terrain. Out in the suburbs it was typically
running at about 3m accuracy. It was really quite interesting to see my
own shots' positions located on the Google Earth imagery.

The GPS was really handy when exploring the city, too. I could always
see all the tracks since we arrived, so it was easy to tell where we
hadn't been and what we hadn't seen. "Hey, the map is pretty clear of
tracks over there, let's go there!".

(1) LOL , Mike...
(2) Although when I was "young and easy under the apple boughs" - that

But we poked fun at it,too. that being said, I found the film to be

In fact, I find most high-techy fantasy type films unwatchable, so I

Bob, moreover, most of the himalayas draw a blank on google maps. i
mean you do get the terrain and stuff but none of the villages roads,

Bob, AFAIK google maps doesn't support garmin gpx files/tracks. one can
feed the tracks to this online utility (gpsvisualizer.com) which in
turn will project them onto google maps which i saved as a static map...

the site also can convert gpx files into google earth kmz/kml format...

the site also limits the size of the tracks to 3 mb so i have to break
up the ride track into four or more sub-tracks...

if you want i can send you the individual tracks off-list so that you
can use it to view the tracks/terrain live on gpsvisualizer.com..

OT: GPS tracks and google maps

2008-08-17 Thread Subash
hi,

posting this (definitely OT) subject here in the hope that it may be of
interest to those who tinker around with gps devices/google maps and
the like...

during my recent ride in the himalayas i had taken a garmin gps with me
(the vista hcx) and almost every day's ride was saved as tracks. had
taken eight eneloop batteries to power the device (had also fixed
a DC 12V cigarette lighter socket to the motorcycle battery to charge
the eneloops through a DC charger). managed to keep the device powered
through the 21 days of the ride...

since i am on slackware, i use the following programme to put
together/combine the waypoints/tracks into one single track.
http://qlandkarte.sourceforge.net/. once i had a single track with
the waypoints, for the first 10 days (from new delhi through
lahaul and spiti to leh, the capital of ladakh district, about 1550 km,
maximum altitude attained on the way, 16600 ft), i used an online
facility (www.gpsvisualizer.com) to project the track on to google
maps.

a lot of cut & paste later, i have a rough-cut google map of the first
10 days' ride. i have a png file (about 7.7 mb) and a jpg version (1.4
mb) for those of who might want to take a peek:-))

jpg version (1.4 mb!!):
http://picasaweb.google.com/pdml.live/Etc/photo#5235403121982680194

png version (7.7 mb!!):
http://picasaweb.google.com/pdml.live/Etc/photo#5235405345629675218

i am keeping the next 11 days' ride map for another lazy weekend. :-))
