OT - Google Chrome Browser

Hi all

If you're running Windows XP or Vista, you might be interested in this
new web browser from Google (note that it's a beta).

I'm a sucker for this sort of thing so I'm having a play with it. I'm
not sure if it's any better than what's already available but it looks
interesting enough.

Re: B&W help with digital -

2008-09-02 Thread Brian Walters
This web site has a couple of good methods:

http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/color-black-white.htm

I generally use the "Hue-Saturation Adjustment Layer Method" but the
"Channel Mixer" method produces good results as does the BW-Plus plug-in
that Peter mentioned.

They all give slightly different renderings so it's worth trying them
all.

In photoshop you can also just adjust the color balance before doing the
desaturation
to simulate traditional B&W colored filters for B&W film to modify tonal

OT Rant: County Fair and the Digital Ghetto

2008-09-02 Thread Matthew Hunt
So last weekend, the wife and I went to the local county fair, for the
first time since moving back here. If I point you to my meager
gallery, can I get away with a rant?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/coneslayer/sets/72157607060568138/

Anyway, we learned that if you submit something for competition, you
get in free. It occurred to me that paying $8 to enter the
photography contest and get in free is at least as good as paying $8
at the gate just to get in. And I just might beat the people who have
the date burned in red digits on their pictures, not to mention the
folks who entered color photographs in the B&W categories (true!).

So I look up the entry guidelines, which are here:

http://cambriacofair.com/19___arts__crafts__photos

I call your attention to the "Digital Manipulation" categories. Taken
literally, it seems impossible to shoot digital without ending up in
the "Digital Manipulation" categories, especially if you shoot raw.
For example:

"26. Single or Multiple Images - The creation of an improved image
through the use of computer tools"

Well, debayering a raw file certainly improves it. So does using
"computer tools" to choose a suitable 8x10 cropping, as required by
the rules. I've even been known to improve an image by picking black
and white points with my "computer tools". But even worse:

"28. Tonal/Colorization - Black & White, Sepia, or Color saturation
of a digital photograph to increase visual dynamics to the viewer."

I take this to mean that any digital B&W conversion lands you in the
"Digital Manipulation" ghetto, instead of, say, "B&W Portrait".

Maybe we'll just enter the Trail Mix competition... that one's only $3.50.

If you made it this far, here's a bonus gallery with better shots:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/coneslayer/sets/72157607029365140/
No rant for this festival, except for the $8 chicken-on-a-stick.

PESO - improved park

2008-09-02 Thread George Sinos
There has been a nice little park and walking trail near my home for
over twenty-five years. Recently, due to street construction, it was
improved. It turned out it drained into a wetland and could no longer
be mowed as it was in the past. It's now planted with wildflowers and
actually looks fairly nice. Here are a just a few shots I took on a
little walk through the park and the nearby neighborhood.

Re: PDML Family album :)

If the files are kept around 200Kbyte then it wouldn't take too much
space I think. But if needed I can host (at clancode.hu) the space for
the pictures and PDML could link them from there.

I'm going to post this in the context of her daily photoblog. Each

I think it's a fabulous format, something I've not seen on other photoblogs.

Willy

2008-09-02 Thread Paul Stenquist
I sometimes called him "Wilbur." With his droopy eyes and long face,
he looked like a Wilbur. Marlene, who nursed him through puppydom,
called him "Wee." My mom -- great, great grandma -- who came to know
him as both she and he were living their last days, called him "Old
Sock," And he dutifully sat by her side as she ate, knowing that she
would share her meals with him, no matter how hard we tried to
persuade her otherwise. When he had the opportunity, he would sneak
into her room and lay at her feet. He loved us all very much, but his
last and most obvious love was Grace. He didn't like it when someone
tried to move him by tugging on his collar, but he let Grace move him
by tugging on his hair. He followed her as she played and smiled
contentedly as she rode him, sat on him, and slept on him.

Several months ago, he became ill. He soldiered on, and we did what
we could to comfort him. But this weekend his burden grew too large
for even this big-hearted dog to bear, and this morning he went to
sleep for the last time. Willy was a good dog, and a good dog is one
of the best things that one can be.

Re: Peso Millard Street Pond

2008-09-02 Thread David J Brooks
I bought a converted Canon G3 at the beginning of June. It came with a
preset WB which works ok, but i set the camera to shoot B&W and in the
live view i can see exactly how the shot will look in IR, the whites,
darks etc.

I shoot it in Av mode at F8 with +0.5 EV. Then a gentle nudge in LR
and its done.

RE: Peso Millard Street Pond

2008-09-02 Thread Bob W
what's a G3?

I discovered a use for live view this weekend that I haven't heard
mentioned before. If your camera can show the histogram on the live
view screen, then as you alter the exposure manually or using AE, the
histogram also moves, so you have a better idea of where your exposure
is going before you take the picture. I think that's pretty cool.

Don't know if said combination rises to the level of "artsy", however. If
it does it for you, what else really matters.

I had to really hunt for that shot, alot of trees on the bank, and no

Dave,
Those IR shots are really eye catching.
The change from dark green to a light color changes the composition a lot.
Very nice work and anticipation of what you had.

I think that lens and the 21mm limited pancake and I'd have everything I need.

Okay, the fisheye zoom, I'd like that too.

And one more dslr body (preferably another *istD for consistency, but
I'm already in negotiations wrt that one).

I'm a man of simple needs.

Terrific gallery, Derby!

To Ken -
I like the crane a lot although I'd take down the brightness a bit...

look like dust even if not...
I take out specks that size in stuff I do even if they were "really there" .

I've been shooting a lot with my darkside camera at 1600... wish I could
go to 3200.
seems to me there is no reason for shots like this lose nothing from the
graininess of
the settings you are using...

to Dave
I'm guess it would , too :-)

to Jack -- I like the graininess vis a vis the bokeh..

Great portrait, Frank. Casual, relaxed, excellent rendering with great
context. I like this picture very much. Cheers, Christine

We just came out of our Labor Day holiday weekend--and yes, trying to savor
the last few weeks of summer. Glad you don't have a cold, Dave. :-)
