On 13/11/08, John Sessoms, discombobulated, unleashed:

But, all seriousness aside, I was in the camera store today, and there
was a guy who was trying out a Sony video cam that had an adapter to
take Nikon lenses. Or, I guess he already had the camera adapter and
was trying out various Nikon lenses ...

Anyway, he said the adapter was to invert the image so it'd be right
side up when using still camera lenses??? What's with that?

Do video camera lenses invert the image twice or something?

If it was a Letus (or similar) then the adapter actually takes the image
from the lens and projects it onto a surface that the camera views -
hence you don't lose a part of the image like you would if you used a
(say) 35mm film lens on an APS-C body. Most professional use video
cameras have 3 chips in either 1/3 inch, 1/2 inch, or 2/3 inch sizes.

DOF is not a fundamental image property. It's based on a judgment of
what constitutes acceptable sharpness in the final product (print,
projected slide, image on screen, etc.). From that assumption, you
can get the acceptable CoC on the film or sensor, which will vary by
image format.

There is a good treatment in Applied Photographic Optics starting on
Page 216. You can get a suitable free preview from Google Books:

http://books.google.com/books?id=cuzYl4hx-B8Cprintsec=frontcoverdq=applied+photographic+optics#PPA216,M1

The author discusses the importance of enlargement factor and assumed
viewing distance. 8x10 contact prints are contrasted with 8x
enlargements from 35mm. Prints from 35mm are contrasted with
projected 35mm. Finally, a table is provided showing allowable CoC
for various formats, under certain standard assumptions.

Here is another such table, from the author of DOF-calculating software:

http://www.dofmaster.com/digital_coc.html

and a Circle-of-Confusion calculator for various formats:

http://www.dofmaster.com/digital_coc.html#coccalculator

Here is another discussion of the topic:

http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/tech/dof.html#DIGITAL
What's so special about digital cameras? Actually, not much, except
that most have sensors smaller (or much smaller) than the 35-mm film
frame. Therefore the CoC size used to define acceptably sharp also
has to be proportionally smaller.

Here is a reprint of a Kodak pamphlet, which also contains a table of
different CoCs for different formats:

http://people.rit.edu/andpph/text-kodak-aa-3.html

Here is another tutorial:

One of Bob Atkins' (the author's) comments may be particularly helpful
to you: The circle of confusion value is NOT an inherent property of
the image recored on film. Neither is DoF. As I carefully explained
above DoF depends on the circle of confusion value, which in turn
depends on how much you enlarge the image.

You are incorrect.

The DOF depends on the following factors:

Lens focal length (f)
Lens focal ratio (f-number, N)
Subject distance (s)
Allowable circle of confusion (c)

Actually, it depends purely on the magnification ratio and alowable COC.
Focal length doesn't matter, nor does subject distance.

P.S. THATS ALL HOGWASH. All you have to do is shoot a portrait
with a wide f-stop like F2 and blur out the background and shoot
again at F22 with sharp clear background to see the effect of
DOF and KNOW that it doesnt matter what print size you use,
the print size has nothing to do with DOF, DOF is a three dimensional
effect that is captured/cant be changed by print size.

No, but i found my install disk, actually there are two disks in the box.

The startup drive cannot be repaired. You must start up from the Mac OS X

 purpose, retail box deliverable.

Do i just put the first CD in the CD reader and boot the computer.??
I'm worried it will start to install something here.

To boot from the distribution CD/DVD:

 - insert it into the CD/DVD drive (in most cases, the system must be up and
 running).

 - either double-click the installer starting point or restart and hold down
the C key ... keep holding it until you hear the optical drive rev up and
the system starts to read the startup sequence from it.

When it comes up, you step into the first screen of the system installation
procedure. Stop there, go to the menubar and pick Disk Utility off the
Utilities menu. Then you can do a verify and repair of the internal hard
 drive.

Once done, use the Quit command and you'll be back in the installer. Use the
Quit command again and it will bring up the Startup Disk control panel and
let you set the internal hard drive to be the startup drive. Restart and
 you're done.

OT: Christmas is Starting Early

2008-11-14 Thread Walter Hamler
Just have to share this with the group! :-)

There is a factory in Northern Minnesota which makes the Tickle Me
Elmo toys. The toy laughs when you tickle it under the arms.

Well, Lena is hired at The Tickle Me Elmo factory and she reports for
her first day promptly at 8:00 AM.

The next day at 8:45 AM there is a knock at the Personnel Manager's
door. The Foreman throws open the door and begins to rant about the
new Employee.

He complains that she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing
up, putting the entire production line behind schedule.

The Personnel Manager decides he should see this for himself, so the 2
men march down to the factory floor. When they get there the line is
so backed up that there are Tickle Me Elmo's all over the factory
floor and they're really beginning to pile up.

At the end of the line stands Lena surrounded by mountains of Tickle
Me Elmo's. She has a roll of plush red fabric and a huge bag of small
marbles.

The 2 men watch in amazement as she cuts a little piece of fabric,
wraps it around two marbles and begins to carefully sew the little
package between Elmo's legs.

The Personnel Manager bursts into laughter. After several minutes of
hysterics he pulls himself together and approaches Lena...

'I'm sorry,' he says to her, barely able to keep a straight face, 'but
I think you misunderstood the instructions I gave you Yesterday...'

'Your job is to give Elmo two test tickles.' :-)

The second one is great. Beautiful foliage colours and contrasts. I
find the out of focus foliage at the top of the first one detracts from
 the image.

Except in some of the colder areas of the country, we don't see a lot of
this sort of massed foliage colour here. Australia doesn't have many
 native deciduous trees.

Thanks to cheekygeek for these tips.

I ran the disk repair with the install disk, and all it found was the
volume needed minor repair and it fixed it.
I also reran the disk permissions. Many needed fixing.

Still have 7.9 gig free as apposed to 18.4.

Ran disk inventory, neat layout.

Only big thing i saw was in users, sparse image files had 29 gig in
it. In the sub directories a whole bunch of files named davebrooks.1
or davebrooks.15 etc.

Not sure what this is, so its still on the computer.

Nothing even close to 11 gig shows up.

What version of the Mac OS are you running? Do you happen to run Norton

Forcing the mac to do it's maintenance (getting rid of logs and temp files)
 may fix the problem:

To see where big files exist-
Download this free program (it's excellent donationware): DiskInventoryX
DiskInventoryX is a great graphical way to identify what's taking up big
chunks of your hard drive (and where it is).
 http://www.derlien.com/
It reads your drive and creates a graphical view (color-coded shapes)
A 10 GB file is gonna be VERY easy to spot. It will tell you exactly where
that file is so you can go in and delete it. You might google the name of
the file before deleting it, just to make sure you aren't gonna mess
 anything up by deleting it.

A couple of other pages that might be useful:

2008-11-14 Thread Paul Sorenson

Frank -

To me, that's what most of your pix are all about...little slices of
what life is...pieces of history that, if preserved, in 20, 50, 100
years folks can look at and see what our lives were like in the early
21st century. We can all enjoy the beauty in a great image, be it
photography or the old masters, but it's photography on a daily basis
that can depict who we are and who we have been; that can cause us to
look at the faces and wonder what their lives were, what were their
fears, their hopes, their dreams, were they fulfilled or did they just
live lives of quiet desperation.

Hey, I'm 39...

2008-11-14 Thread Gianfranco Irlanda
Hi everybody!

I'll try to put apart my lurking status for a while...

It looks like I'm growing older every year (most of us do...)
Among the good news, yesterday was the opening of my new exhibition, several
years after the last one.
A good crowd for an opening, but strangely I didn't take a single shot when the
people were there (well, not that strangely, I was constantly shaking hands and
hugging friends...) Luckily others took pictures, I hope to have them pretty
soon. If you want to have a look at the exhibition shots (a few of them are
well known here) not in the same shape as the prints on show, of course - good
ol' silver based prints - I have them on facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2009813l=e2183id=1283751350 )

So, that's all for now.

Ciao,

Gianfranco

so check around system preferences if you don't see it in the Security
panel. It would most likely be in the Accounts panel if it's not in
the Security panel.

If FileVault is turned on, that explains the 'sparse image files' in
the Users directory and where your disk space is going. When you are
running FileVault, all of your account's directory tree (including all
your files and folders) is encrypted into a sparse image file (a form
of virtual volume file like a disk image) which is opened and mounted
every time you login on the system. When you hard-quit the system
using the power button, FileVault cannot cleanly close that file and
ensure that it is properly safeguarded, so the next time you start up
it recreates the sparse image file, increments the number you're
seeing (davebrooks.N, where N is the copy number) and opens that. Each
one of those files takes up however much space on disk, even though
the older versions are no longer being used.

So the last time you forced power off, it recreated that sparse image
again ...

To fix this:

- Be sure you BACK UP all your account's data files to an external
drive first. Preferably to a freshly formatted, empty external drive.

- Turn FileVault off.

- Once you do that, and FileVault finishes the job of returning your
account to an unencrypted tree of folders and files, you can safely
delete all the sparse image files named davebrooks.N.

- If you then feel you need the security of FileVault, turn it back
on. It will recreate a sparse image file but there will be only one of
them. Personally, I would only use FileVault if you had data that
needed to be secure on a laptop that you used for a lot of travel, but
others have different ideas ...

This should regain all that lost disk space for you.

Ran disk inventory, neat layout.

Only big thing i saw was in users, sparse image files had 29 gig in

I found the 17-35 very acceptable in all other respects, it's interesting to
note that it's not just Klaus who noticed the field curvature but Pop Photo and
IIRC Shutterbug. It may have been one of the few times I should have given more

The Tamron 17-35 has quite a bit of field curvature resulting in a
lot of images that do not look sharp at the edges. This was something
I found quite unacceptable in a lens I used mainly for landscape and
group photographs and I eventually sold it and bought the DA 16-45.
The DA 16-45 has to be one of the best value lenses I ever bought and
I'm more than satisfied with the results. Apparently the Tamron 17-50
shares the same field curvature issues as the 17-35, I'm hoping the
10-24 performs better in this respect because I'd really like to try
one and keep it company with my Tamron 28-75 or a bag full of FA

This isn't my best subway shot ever, probably not even
 my best subway
shot this week, but it's why I love shooting
 underground.

There are a few places along our subway lines where the
 trains come
out of tunnels and ride in the open for several minutes.
 It's funny
nowadays: many people reach for their cellphones (and now
 i-Phones
and Blackberries) for truncated conversations and surfing.
 One day
I'll catch a bunch of people on camera doing just that,
 but last
weekend it was just this fellow.

What I really like about this sort of ultra-wide shot is
 taking a look
at what everyone else is doing in the car. Some sleeping
 (or at least
with their eyes shut). Some reading. Some in
 conversation. Some
just staring blankly into space. It may not be great
 photography, but
it says something about human nature, IMHO.

 Hope you enjoy:

Brian: thanks for the compliment. The photo was taken 3 feet away from a
screen with the Gnome desktop, but I hadn't realized where I got the idea
from.

I think my favourite is Footsteps by Thrainn Vigfusson - well thought
out and well executed. It looks like the Gnome Desktop logo
(http://www.gnome.org/) except it has one too many toes.

Cotty: I think you're right. I was concentrating on getting the reflections
on the aluminium right, and the aperture was set to match the output from
the strobe. I couldn't have changed the aperture more than 2 or 3 stops
anyway, because of space and strobe limitiations.

Honourable Mention:

Footsteps by Thrain Vigfusson
Great idea but for me too much and not enough depth of field. The upper
footprint is trying to be soft but needs more softness, or it's trying
to be sharp and needs more sharpness.

Thrainn

PESO: Dodge Challenger Race Package

I shot this car for Dodge PR and Mopar Action magazine about a month
ago. The embargo has been lifted now, so I can show a pic. Another
frame from the shoot is going on the cover, so I'll hold off on
showing that.

The car itself is quite remarkable. It's a basically stock Dodge
Challenger with a different third member and a slightly modified 6.1
liter version of their hemi engine. You can buy it from the factory on
special order. It's engineered for drag racine. i photographed it
during prototype testing, so I couldn't choose the time of day for
best light. This shot was in early afternoon. Performance? The car ran
10.01 at 132 mph in a quarter mile. That's faster than any exotic you
can buy today. Not bad for a basically off-the-shelf piece of Detroit
iron.

RE: FA 1.4/50mm tested by DPReview

2008-11-14 Thread JC OConnell
DOF CHANGES are relative and DO NOT depend on a
circle of confusion number, this thread started
out talking about DOF changes.

1. If you lower the in-camera magnification or
increase the fstop number, DOF gets deeper or MORE DOF.

2. If you increase the in-camera magnification or
decrease the fstop number, DOF gets shallower or LESS DOF.

Changing format, print size, focal lenght, etc, HAVE
ZERO EFFECT on DOF. It doesnt matter what circle of
confusion you use to define in focus, only factors
that change the DOF are in camera magnification and fstop.

that's surprising. I wouldn't have thought Dodge were particularly interested in

Viz:

http://www.letusdirect.com/letus-ultimate.html

Might not have been exactly that one, but yes, something very similar.
It didn't have the offset rails. The rails on the one he was using went
all the way through both front and rear mounts.

I remember him saying something about a 1/2 inch sensor and a spinning
or vibrating ground glass.

Three chips? Separate sensors for RGB?

The guys at the camera store didn't know anything about his video
camera, and he didn't know anything about Nikon camera lenses, so they
were having a fairly interesting discussion.

One of the lenses he looked at seemed to be the Nikon equivalent of the
FAJ lens (i.e. no manual aperture ring) and it defaulted to fully
stopped down when he mounted it to the adapter. They were trying to
figure out how to force it to stay open all the time, because it was
just too dim.

For the most part, I use Facebook for casual photography. I've read
that agreement before and while it is somewhat worrisome, I, for the
most part, don't put stuff I depend on for a living up there. I
realize that although those terms are somewhat draconian for ANY
person, I don't really rely on my photos for anything more than my own
amusement and entertainment - and, sadly, it makes for a very easy
platform for sharing casual snaps with my friends.

I'd never post stuff to a site with these sorts of terms of use for

The next day at 8:45 AM there is a knock at the Personnel Manager's
door. The Foreman throws open the door and begins to rant about the
new Employee.

He complains that she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing
up, putting the entire production line behind schedule.

The Personnel Manager decides he should see this for himself, so the 2
men march down to the factory floor. When they get there the line is
so backed up that there are Tickle Me Elmo's all over the factory
floor and they're really beginning to pile up.

At the end of the line stands Lena surrounded by mountains of Tickle
Me Elmo's. She has a roll of plush red fabric and a huge bag of small
marbles.

The 2 men watch in amazement as she cuts a little piece of fabric,
wraps it around two marbles and begins to carefully sew the little
package between Elmo's legs.

Hey dudes, JC is correct on DoF. Chill.

Mixing CoC and DoF is a no win argument unless a value of CoC is fixed
before you start. You can achieve a deeper DoF from any projected
image if you decide after the fact that a sloppier focus (larger CoC)
is acceptable in your resultant print or negative, but that is not
changing the DoF, only your eyesight.

You can buy it from the factory on special order. It's
engineered for drag racine. i photographed it during
prototype testing, so I couldn't choose the time of day
for best light. This shot was in early afternoon.
Performance? The car ran 10.01 at 132 mph in a quarter mile.

 Thanks for posting the link!

 Dave:

The most important question, given what you found, is whether you have
FileVault turned on. I think you do. It's a question I only rarely think to
ask ... (thanks again, cheekygeek!). You can find this out by looking at
the settings ... In Mac OS X v10.5.x, the FileVault setting is in System
Prefs - Security panel, FileVault tab. I seem to recall that the switch to
turn it on and off was elsewhere in Tiger, so check around system
preferences if you don't see it in the Security panel. It would most likely
be in the Accounts panel if it's not in the Security panel.

If FileVault is turned on, that explains the 'sparse image files' in the
Users directory and where your disk space is going. When you are running
FileVault, all of your account's directory tree (including all your files
and folders) is encrypted into a sparse image file (a form of virtual volume
file like a disk image) which is opened and mounted every time you login on
the system. When you hard-quit the system using the power button, FileVault
cannot cleanly close that file and ensure that it is properly safeguarded,
so the next time you start up it recreates the sparse image file, increments
the number you're seeing (davebrooks.N, where N is the copy number) and
opens that. Each one of those files takes up however much space on disk,
even though the older versions are no longer being used.

So the last time you forced power off, it recreated that sparse image again
 ...

 To fix this:

 - Be sure you BACK UP all your account's data files to an external drive
first. Preferably to a freshly formatted, empty external drive.

 - Turn FileVault off.

 - Once you do that, and FileVault finishes the job of returning your account
to an unencrypted tree of folders and files, you can safely delete all the
 sparse image files named davebrooks.N.

 - If you then feel you need the security of FileVault, turn it back on. It
will recreate a sparse image file but there will be only one of them.
Personally, I would only use FileVault if you had data that needed to be
secure on a laptop that you used for a lot of travel, but others have
 different ideas ...

This should regain all that lost disk space for you.

IIRC, you can bend the film supports on the feed side enough to fit

This isn't my best subway shot ever, probably not even my best subway
shot this week, but it's why I love shooting underground.

There are a few places along our subway lines where the trains come
out of tunnels and ride in the open for several minutes. It's funny
nowadays: many people reach for their cellphones (and now i-Phones
and Blackberries) for truncated conversations and surfing. One day
I'll catch a bunch of people on camera doing just that, but last
weekend it was just this fellow.

What I really like about this sort of ultra-wide shot is taking a look
at what everyone else is doing in the car. Some sleeping (or at least
with their eyes shut). Some reading. Some in conversation. Some
just staring blankly into space. It may not be great photography, but
it says something about human nature, IMHO.

Hope you enjoy:

Hi everybody!

I'll try to put apart my lurking status for a while...

It looks like I'm growing older every year (most of us do...)
Among the good news, yesterday was the opening of my new exhibition,
several years after the last one.
A good crowd for an opening, but strangely I didn't take a single shot
when the people were there (well, not that strangely, I was constantly
shaking hands and hugging friends...) Luckily others took pictures, I hope
to have them pretty soon. If you want to have a look at the exhibition
shots (a few of them are well known here) not in the same shape as the
prints on show, of course - good ol' silver based prints - I have them on
facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2009813l=e2183id=1283751350 )

So, that's all for now.

Ciao,

Gianfranco

Re: PESO: Dodge Challenger Race Package

2008-11-14 Thread PN Stenquist

Thanks Doug.
Hmmm, I could clone the halo out. It's due to a shadow in the rear.
Don't know what caused it in front. I thought it contributed to the
sensation of motion, but perhaps it's distracting.

/Very/ nice shot, Paul. I'm not fond of the halo around the car,
but that's a nit, surely. :-)

Nicely captured PAul.

What's that going on at the front end - looks like cloud build up?

Not bad for a basically off-the-shelf piece of Detroit
iron.
