On 13/11/08, John Sessoms, discombobulated, unleashed: But, all seriousness aside, I was in the camera store today, and there was a guy who was trying out a Sony video cam that had an adapter to take Nikon lenses. Or, I guess he already had the camera adapter and was trying out various Nikon lenses ... Anyway, he said the adapter was to invert the image so it'd be right side up when using still camera lenses??? What's with that? Do video camera lenses invert the image twice or something? If it was a Letus (or similar) then the adapter actually takes the image from the lens and projects it onto a surface that the camera views - hence you don't lose a part of the image like you would if you used a (say) 35mm film lens on an APS-C body. Most professional use video cameras have 3 chips in either 1/3 inch, 1/2 inch, or 2/3 inch sizes. P.S. THATS ALL HOGWASH. All you have to do is shoot a portrait with a wide f-stop like F2 and blur out the background and shoot again at F22 with sharp clear background to see the effect of DOF and KNOW that it doesnt matter what print size you use, the print size has nothing to do with DOF, DOF is a three dimensional effect that is captured/cant be changed by print size. When it comes up, you step into the first screen of the system installation procedure. Stop there, go to the menubar and pick Disk Utility off the Utilities menu. Then you can do a verify and repair of the internal hard drive. Once done, use the Quit command and you'll be back in the installer. OT: Christmas is Starting Early
Just have to share this with the group! :-) There is a factory in Northern Minnesota which makes the Tickle Me Elmo toys. The toy laughs when you tickle it under the arms. Well, Lena is hired at The Tickle Me Elmo factory and she reports for her first day promptly at 8:00 AM. The next day at 8:45 AM there is a knock at the Personnel Manager's door. The Foreman throws open the door and begins to rant about the new Employee. He complains that she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing up, putting the entire production line behind schedule. The Personnel Manager decides he should see this for himself, so the 2 men march down to the factory floor. When they get there the line is so backed up that there are Tickle Me Elmo's all over the factory floor and they're really beginning to pile up. At the end of the line stands Lena surrounded by mountains of Tickle Me Elmo's. She has a roll of plush red fabric and a huge bag of small marbles. The 2 men watch in amazement as she cuts a little piece of fabric, wraps it around two marbles and begins to carefully sew the little package between Elmo's legs. The Personnel Manager bursts into laughter. After several minutes of hysterics he pulls himself together and approaches Lena... 'I'm sorry,' he says to her, barely able to keep a straight face, 'but I think you misunderstood the instructions I gave you Yesterday...' 'Your job is to give Elmo two test tickles.' :-) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Frank - To me, that's what most of your pix are all about...little slices of what life is...pieces of history that, if preserved, in 20, 50, 100 years folks can look at and see what our lives were like in the early 21st century. We can all enjoy the beauty in a great image, be it photography or the old masters, but it's photography on a daily basis that can depict who we are and who we have been; that can cause us to look at the faces and wonder what their lives were, what were their fears, their hopes, their dreams, were they fulfilled or did they just live lives of quiet desperation. -p frank theriault wrote: What I really like about this sort of ultra-wide shot is taking a look at what everyone else is doing in the car. Re: Stupid iBook
CheekyGeek: Disk Inventory X is a great tool! I have several other tools that attempt a similar task but this one is much more accessible and easier to understand. Thanks for posting the link! Dave: The most important question, given what you found, is whether you have FileVault turned on. I think you do. It's a question I only rarely think to ask ... (thanks again, cheekygeek!). You can find this out by looking at the settings ... In Mac OS X v10.5.x, the FileVault setting is in System Prefs - Security panel, FileVault tab. I seem to recall that the switch to turn it on and off was elsewhere in Tiger, so check around system preferences if you don't see it in the Security panel. It would most likely be in the Accounts panel if it's not in the Security panel. If FileVault is turned on, that explains the 'sparse image files' in the Users directory and where your disk space is going. When you are running FileVault, all of your account's directory tree (including all your files and folders) is encrypted into a sparse image file (a form of virtual volume file like a disk image) which is opened and mounted every time you login on the system. When you hard-quit the system using the power button, FileVault cannot cleanly close that file and ensure that it is properly safeguarded, so the next time you start up it recreates the sparse image file, increments the number you're seeing (davebrooks.N, where N is the copy number) and opens that. Each one of those files takes up however much space on disk, even though the older versions are no longer being used. So the last time you forced power off, it recreated that sparse image again ... To fix this: - Be sure you BACK UP all your account's data files to an external drive first. Preferably to a freshly formatted, empty external drive. - Turn FileVault off. - Once you do that, and FileVault finishes the job of returning your account to an unencrypted tree of folders and files, you can safely delete all the sparse image files named davebrooks.N. - If you then feel you need the security of FileVault, turn it back on. It will recreate a sparse image file but there will be only one of them. Personally, I would only use FileVault if you had data that needed to be secure on a laptop that you used for a lot of travel, but others have different ideas ... This should regain all that lost disk space for you. Godfrey On Nov 14, 2008, at 10:18 AM, David J Brooks wrote: Thanks to cheekygeek for these tips. There are a few places along our subway lines where the trains come out of tunnels and ride in the open for several minutes. It's funny nowadays: many people reach for their cellphones (and now i-Phones and Blackberries) for truncated conversations and surfing. One day I'll catch a bunch of people on camera doing just that, but last weekend it was just this fellow. What I really like about this sort of ultra-wide shot is taking a look at what everyone else is doing in the car. Some sleeping (or at least with their eyes shut). Some reading. Some in conversation. Some just staring blankly into space. It may not be great photography, but it says something about human nature, IMHO. Re: November PUG is up
Brian: thanks for the compliment. The photo was taken 3 feet away from a screen with the Gnome desktop, but I hadn't realized where I got the idea from. I think my favourite is Footsteps by Thrainn Vigfusson - well thought out and well executed. It looks like the Gnome Desktop logo (http://www.gnome.org/) except it has one too many toes. Cotty: I think you're right. I was concentrating on getting the reflections on the aluminium right, and the aperture was set to match the output from the strobe. I couldn't have changed the aperture more than 2 or 3 stops anyway, because of space and strobe limitiations. Honourable Mention: Footsteps by Thrain Vigfusson Great idea but for me too much and not enough depth of field. The upper footprint is trying to be soft but needs more softness, or it's trying to be sharp and needs more sharpness. I shot this car for Dodge PR and Mopar Action magazine about a month ago. The embargo has been lifted now, so I can show a pic. Another frame from the shoot is going on the cover, so I'll hold off on showing that. The car itself is quite remarkable. It's a basically stock Dodge Challenger with a different third member and a slightly modified 6.1 liter version of their hemi engine. You can buy it from the factory on special order. It's engineered for drag racine. i photographed it during prototype testing, so I couldn't choose the time of day for best light. This shot was in early afternoon. Performance? The car ran 10.01 at 132 mph in a quarter mile. That's faster than any exotic you can buy today. RE: FA 1.4/50mm tested by DPReview
DOF CHANGES are relative and DO NOT depend on a circle of confusion number, this thread started out talking about DOF changes. 1. If you lower the in-camera magnification or increase the fstop number, DOF gets deeper or MORE DOF. 2. If you increase the in-camera magnification or decrease the fstop number, DOF gets shallower or LESS DOF. Changing format, print size, focal lenght, etc, HAVE ZERO EFFECT on DOF. It doesnt matter what circle of confusion you use to define in focus, only factors that change the DOF are in camera magnification and fstop. RE: PESO: Dodge Challenger Race Package
It's engineered for drag racine. that's surprising. I wouldn't have thought Dodge were particularly interested in 17th century French playwrights who respected the classical unities. And I'm astonished to learn that he, a Jansenist, liked to dress in women's clothing. He seemed like such a nice man. Qui te l'a dit? as Hermione so famously asked. Re: OT: Seeing Red
From: Cotty [EMAIL PROTECTED] On 13/11/08, John Sessoms, discombobulated, unleashed: But, all seriousness aside, I was in the camera store today, and there was a guy who was trying out a Sony video cam that had an adapter to take Nikon lenses. Viz: http://www.letusdirect.com/letus-ultimate.html Might not have been exactly that one, but yes, something very similar. It didn't have the offset rails. The rails on the one he was using went all the way through both front and rear mounts. I remember him saying something about a 1/2 inch sensor and a spinning or vibrating ground glass. Three chips? Separate sensors for RGB? The guys at the camera store didn't know anything about his video camera, and he didn't know anything about Nikon camera lenses, so they were having a fairly interesting discussion. One of the lenses he looked at seemed to be the Nikon equivalent of the FAJ lens (i.e. no manual aperture ring) and it defaulted to fully stopped down when he mounted it to the adapter. They were trying to figure out how to force it to stay open all the time, because it was just too dim. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Hey dudes, JC is correct on DoF. Chill. Mixing CoC and DoF is a no win argument unless a value of CoC is fixed before you start. You can achieve a deeper DoF from any projected image if you decide after the fact that a sloppier focus (larger CoC) is acceptable in your resultant print or negative, but that is not changing the DoF, only your eyesight. Re: Spotted in a stairwell...
That's quite fun, Charles. Good eye! FYI, I saw the pic on the public link you posted after this link. And wrt to the facebook copyright thing, Charles, I'd stay clear; you just never know. :-) Cheers, Christine - Original Message - From: Charles Robinson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Friday, November 14, 2008 12:02 PM Subject: Spotted in a stairwell... Re: PESO - Out of the Tunnel - Check Your i-Phone!
Nice, Frank. And I agree with Paul's comments about your work. Cheers, Christine - Original Message - From: frank theriault [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Friday, November 14, 2008 11:35 AM Subject: PESO - Out of the Tunnel - Check Your i-Phone! This isn't my best subway shot ever, probably not even my best subway shot this week, but it's why I love shooting underground. Hope you enjoy: http://knarf-underground.blogspot.com/2008/11/out-of-tunnel-check-your-i-phone.html cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Dodge Challenger Race Package
Congrats, Paul on the shot. Looks great as usual. Hope to see the cover shot soon. Cheers, Christine - Original Message - From: PN Stenquist [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Friday, November 14, 2008 4:53 PM Subject: PESO: Dodge Challenger Race Package I shot this car for Dodge PR and Mopar Action magazine about a month ago. Not bad for a basically off-the-shelf piece of Detroit iron. http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8226674size=lg -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Gianfranco: I'm new, so you don't know me, but I thought I'd say happy b-day anyway and congrats on the exhibit. I'll try to put apart my lurking status for a while... It looks like I'm growing older every year (most of us do...) Among the good news, yesterday was the opening of my new exhibition, several years after the last one. A good crowd for an opening, but strangely I didn't take a single shot when the people were there (well, not that strangely, I was constantly shaking hands and hugging friends...) Luckily others took pictures, I hope to have them pretty soon. If you want to have a look at the exhibition shots (a few of them are well known here) not in the same shape as the prints on show, of course - good ol' silver based prints - I have them on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2009813l=e2183id=1283751350 ) So, that's all for now. Re: PESO: Dodge Challenger Race Package
Thanks Doug. Hmmm, I could clone the halo out. It's due to a shadow in the rear. Don't know what caused it in front. I thought it contributed to the sensation of motion, but perhaps it's distracting. Nicely captured PAul. What's that going on at the front end - looks like cloud build up?
