I wanted a digital camera I could leave in the car and forget. I was
recommended the Technika SH340T 3.1MP, takes an SD card (up to 2GB). I got
it from Tesco for under £20. It takes most acceptable pictures, which I know
from seeing the results my wife has taken with it, and the fact I'll never
get the camera back!

RE: K20D firmware update

2009-04-11 Thread John Whittingham
Hi Bob

Focus confirmation/lock seems faster with my FA primes, particularly in low
light/contrast situations. I've yet to try F 70-210 and my third party lenses.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Graydon and Tim.
I don't own any SDM lenses, screw drive only!
I don't want to install this update if it's not useful for the old drive also.
Wasn't one of the updates for the K10d or K20d to enable SDM lenses?
I sure don't want to install if it disables screw drive autofocus.

Jens, some schools queue the kids, one class each time, and you'd better
have some goofy hat or curvy assistant to help gather their attention -
according to their age span, I mean. Seen 40+ students in some classes...

25 students in 15 minutes probably means a not so fast but not lazy
session, with time to try something else than a quick smile - but no
time for a full scale session with each victim - er, student. What ages?
Is that a photo of the student seated in a desk with fountain pen and
scroll in hands, national and city flags behind? Head and shoulders, and
if so, are they so different in height to grant moving the lights too
often? Are you going alone or do you need an assistant? A friend from 30
years and 1500km away deployed a team of four per school. Then those
were film days, and he used 120 film... and Rollei TLRs, three of them,
plus a backup.

...wait a minute... lights?? Are you going to use flash? Else, can you
be sure the shutter speed will be high enough to freeze the angelic ones
mid-flight?

...can you stand 25+ students in a single day??? And still be able to
return home to your family with a smiling face?

Did some sessions for a friend: model school, ages 5~15, all posed head
and shoulders, flashes, 35mm film, 6 frames per future top model,
usually 5 students each film since there was always someone claiming
eyes closed - they were all told by me and their teachers to report if
they failed to see the flashes go off. No, the trick didn't prevent dead
fish looking youngsters with half closed eyes. We survived, only minor
cash returns or re-shoots. No profit for that kind of photographic
vacation you're talking about - and the next guy charged only half my
fee... can't understand how.

Good luck - and bon voyage.

Good points, Luiz

I'm not sure how this is usually done. I'd prefere being alone waith each

class - 25 students - in just 15 minutes. I haven't seen his shots, but they
certainly made him rich :-)
If I can earn my yearly sallery in two months, I will have 8 months left to do
really nice, artistic shots elsewhere - and two months holliday with my family

Re: PESO - portrait of a young man

2009-04-11 Thread Bruce Dayton
Around here, the meaning of portrait and character study are much
more like Bill has said. Perhaps it has meaning based on the intent.
In a character study, one is trying to bring out something more about
the person than just the exterior view. In a portrait one is trying
to show a pleasing view of the exterior.

Perhaps another way to think of it is that portraits are regularly
asked for and paid for by the subject. Character studies may not be.
I'm sure in different parts of the world, there is a difference of
meaning of these words. And, at times, even with different meanings,
a single photograph could show both. One of the easiest tests of the
portrait success is if the subject is happy with the image.

So Jostein, has the subject seen this image and what did he think?

I got my M8 back today. It's been all the way back to the Fatherland. You
may remember I put it in for repair because someone had spilt beer on it,
which got into the shutter release mech. I hoped to get it repaired under
warranty, but wasn't terribly optimistic.

The release is now working better than it ever did. As well as that they
cleaned it, modified the electronics, cleaned the sensor, updated the
firmware, cleaned and adjusted the rangefinder and adjusted all parts. Cost?
£0.00 (that's $0.00 at current exchange rates, for those of you listening in
black and white). They even charged the battery.

The firmware upgrade provides the 'discreet' shutter cocking mode, which is
a great improvement on the previous one and is much quieter all round,
almost into M3 territory.

I love Leica.

The cherry on top is that my M4-2, which was in the shop on commission sale,
has sold. So when the mandatory return period has expired I should (not
wishing to count unhatched pullets) have a bit of money to spend on toys.

Talking to the evil pusher about it, I said I was surprised it had sold so
quickly - about 1 month. He told me that sales of used film Leicas are
through the roof at the moment. He's sold 3 M4-2s on commission in the last
couple of weeks, and as we were speaking someone was buying an M6 which had
only been in the shop one full day. He said they're turning over used film
Leicas in a matter of days at the moment.

RE: PESO - portrait of a young man

2009-04-11 Thread Bob W
That's a very interesting difference in how we use the words. So, to give an
example, you would not consider Arnold Newman's photograph of Krupp to be a
portrait? If so, it goes very strongly against the way the word is
understood in British English at the very least.

I have never noticed such a distinction in American or Canadian writing
about photography.

You can see Newman's picture of Krupp on the PDN page for Newman
(http://www.pdngallery.com/legends/newman/). Under Portraits! ;o)

Anyway, I did the update and discovered, much to my lack of surprise, that
the AF speed on the DA55/1.4 is no faster than it was prior to the upgrade.

In supported bicycle touring the van that follows people is called the sag
wagon, because it's what collects you if you start to sag. It kind of fits
as a name for a coffee stop, too - you need coffee when you start to sag.

That little type of Citroen van reminds me of a terrific French cartoon film
(Belleville Rendezvous) which featured such a van being used to collect
racing cyclists, although in racing I think it's called a broom wagon, or
something along those lines.

RE: GESO Liu shoot

2009-04-11 Thread John Sessoms

From: "Christine Aguila"

Hi Everyone:

1) For this homework assignment, I tried my hand at playing a
PJ/environmental portrait shooter. My colleague Liu was kind enough to play
the subject--a famous artisan knitter :-) .

2) This was all done with window light only. I shot 106 shots, got the 1st
cut down to 28, then picked these 8 for the gallery. Liu's niece, May, was
with us, and for #2 she held a reflector photo left. The window light was
coming from photo right.

3) We finished in the kitchen then Lui started showing May how to knit; I
grabbed the camera and started shooting, but the 2 of them were standing in
a darker part of the kitchen & I had to bump up the ISO to get it. What was
amazing was how totally relaxed I became when shooting these spontaneous
shots. When working in the living room for the more posed shots, I was so
nervous and tense. The switch in feeling is so striking. Hopefully, the
more I do this I'll learn to relax.

Comments welcome.
Cheers, Christine

Numbers 4 & 5 look like you hit the mark. Number 8 is a nice portrait.

A Photo-Journalist would be ready for the darker part of the kitchen in
shot number 6 and would have an off camera fill - flash or reflector. I
think a lower camera angle, bringing the faces more in line with the
hands might improve the shot slightly.

Photo-Journalism is about story telling and numbers 5 & 6 tell a story.

Nice light - a couple of very nice close-up shots of the builders,
especially the guy fiddling with his tackle.

Actually, just checked. They both look as though they're fiddling with their
tackle. I mean the 2nd one.

Around here, we use "sag wagon" for the follow vehicle on supported
tours. It typically carries luggage, spare parts, the driver's bike,
etc. I think you're right about "broom" being more of a racing term,
although on our slower club rides I often volunteer to ride "sweep".

Nice pic, btw. When did you guys get coffee over there?

I have very mixed reactions to this shot. Lovely shot of the girls, of
that there is no doubt.

It appears to be a still "action" shot, like they just got through sliding
on the cardboard. But when I look at the surroundings, what I can see of
them, there doesn't seem to be anyplace to slide. So I come up with the
feeling that the shot is posed. But a posed shot makes no sense of the
supposed
action -- it falls apart.

That's my mixed reaction and .02. Do it with it what you will.

You might consider a crop right down the middle of his nose,
and across at the lowermost edge of his lip. ?That would give
more emphasis to the eye and the half-smile, which is where
the power of the shot is.

I don't know why, but for some reason that reminded me of a scene from
an old movie "The Magic Christian".
