Re: Big-telephoto advice

2009-05-27 Thread peter alling
The multi coating is not that big a deal if you follow the the usual
precautions of not shooting into a light source and use a good lens
hood. However the later lenses, those which are the same optical
formulas as the subsequent [K] mount lenses are usually better than
the same focal length of an earlier design. That's kind of a duh
comment, but it is something to keep in mind. The Super Takumar
lenses coatings were excellent and are still better than many
manufactures mulit-coatings.

A used Tamron 300 ƒ2.8 AF SP with a Tamron 2x Pz-AF TC gives you a 600
ƒ5.6 with AF for 1/2 of what an A 600 ƒ5.6 would cost, and "might" be

Re: Big-telephoto advice

2009-05-27 Thread Brendan MacRae

The A400 5.6 suffers pretty bad CA even right down the middle, at least mine
does. There was a long thread about this a couple of years ago when I posted a
shot where the fringing was pretty bad in the middle of the image and the scene
wasn't even backlit. The CA correction in Camera Raw and other converters can't
fix it.

That was coupled with the K10D. I've not used it much with the K20D.

The A 400/5.6 is a much better lens than the screwmount, the SMC or the M
versions of the 400, in that it will focus close enough to get a bird full
frame, and it gives you all metering options on a Pentax digital DSLR. I've
seen them for less than $400. I think that's about what I paid for mine four or
five years ago. A decent lens. It also works well with the Pentax AX-S 2 and
1.4 converters. It doesn't accept the L converters. Some CA on digital cameras
when shooting branches against the sky, but that's fixable. I would guess the
SMC 500/4.5 or 300/4 are even worse in that regard.

Holy cow, this used-glass thing is a fascinating sub-sub-sub-culture.
I was particularly charmed by a K-mount Tokina SL400 400mm f5.6 going
suspiciously cheap on EBay, from the UK. The URL was three lines long

The Super-Takumar 300 (no SMC) is *definitely* the most common thing
out there, as many of them as everything else put together. One of
those would probably meet my needs.

I had to resist the temptation to pull the trigger several times; that

I've hand-held a 300/2.8 with the 1.7x AF adapter on it.
That's a sweet combination (a 500mm/4.5).

But you won't find that going on eBay for $700 ...

The Tamron 300/2.8 is a darn good lens, too; I only
switched to a Pentax A* because I got an offer that
I couldn't refuse. And that one used to be available
at around $1000 (although that was some years ago).

I would disagree with this. The difference between SMC and Supertaks is
Nearly nil with these low element long telephotos. It doesn’t

I think with the SMC coatings, they are virtually indistingushable from
the A series lenses, maybe even the FA's. Without the SMC coatings, get
a good lens hood! The SMC is best for reducing flare in backlighting.
I think the Super Takumars are the series before the SMC Takumars.

Confirmed: no K30D ever. The K-7 *is* the K30D.

2009-05-27 Thread Matthew Miller

The original name for the K-7 was the K30. However, as developement rolled
on, we realized that this camera was much more than a replacement to the

As far as where that number came from, it is hard to say. I probably
shouldn't share this, but the original suggestion was K-9. For obvious
reasons we here in the US and our European counterparts vetoed this idea.

Re: Big-telephoto advice

2009-05-27 Thread paul stenquist
The A 400/5.6 is a much better lens than the screwmount, the SMC or
the M versions of the 400, in that it will focus close enough to get a
bird full frame, and it gives you all metering options on a Pentax
digital DSLR. I've seen them for less than $400. I think that's about
what I paid for mine four or five years ago. A decent lens. It also
works well with the Pentax AX-S 2 and 1.4 converters. It doesn't
accept the L converters. Some CA on digital cameras when shooting
branches against the sky, but that's fixable. I would guess the SMC
500/4.5 or 300/4 are even worse in that regard.

Something that kings and queens let us do so that we feel important?
Anyway, our democracies seem to be devolving back to totalitarian styles of

Which makes me wonder which is the more natural style of governance.

I'd rather think some of those were intended to make noise, keep the noise
up, and keep the noise still higher. No doudbt they made a lot of noise.

No, I'm not taking any leaks as truth. But I think they're not so

Arrived in NC

I'm now safely ensconced in "the cabin" (and roughing it by Cotty's
definition: Only dial-up for Internet).

Scott, I ended up bringing my whole 645 kit: 645 body, two 120 inserts,
45mm, 75mm and 200mm lenses. So I can shoot the 645 if anyone wants to
borrow my 67 (or vice-versa). I also brought a 52mm polarizer because
someone was looking for one. I brought much more gear than I can
possibly use this year since I'm traveling by car this time and have
extra storage space.

I'll be up before the sunrise tomorrow for photography and I expect to
head to the mountain around noon. Then I'll have Landis phone Doug to
remind him which weekend is the NPW ;-)

But for now it's time for some food and beer and to put my feet up for a

Check the as new prices of the A-1.4 X-S, 1.4 X-L & the A 2.0 x-L (none of
which allow auto focus) and you can get a decent price for auto focus
convertor, more than quite a few of the existing lenses. I'm not an lens
specialist, but there can't be much more involved with the design &
execution of an auto focus convertor.

I'm not equipped to make my own.

I'd be willing to bet you could eyeball a profile with little trouble.

As long as you have the software to create ICC profiles you can indeed
do it that way.

I just save them as a paper profile in the printer driver.
Am I missing something?

I dunno. Depends on your printer driver, I suppose. Whether it's
saving a batch of proprietary settings or generating a true ICC
profile. Save one and then go look in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color and see if a new .icc file
shows up there.

Of course, what works, works. But it's often nice to know what's going
on behind the scenes.

The Epson control interface allows you to save a "profile" for a
particular paper but it does not appear anywhere as a *.ICC file. Under
the colour management tab, you can (in manual colour control) add new
profiles and the add button brings up the list of *.ICC files in
C:\Windows\\color so I assume that you can add a file to that
directory and then use it by choosing it from the add dialogue.

That's very good, with a witty touch at the end. I think you could edit it

Re: GESO-Egret

2009-05-27 Thread Jack Davis

Bruce,
Without question, the first would be my choice of the group. Leg and neck
positions are great. Second might be the shot immediately upon taking flight
from the limb.
You, obviously, weren't able to get much feather detail due to distance and the
'hot' white. As possible, I'd crop to severely limit the presence of the limb
except in the shot of it taking flight.

Hope helpful,

Jack

Thanks, Luiz. The New Cumberland Memorial Day parade is a pretty
standard parade. They lead off with a police car, followed by
servicemen, VFW members, etc. Then the local politicians, a few
bands, community groups, boy scouts, ball teams, church groups, you
name it. The Shriners with their "Police Car", clowns on scooters,
synchronized go-carts and sports car unit were almost their own little
parade within the parade. Then fire trucks. Lots and lots of fire
trucks. There must have been trucks from 5 or 6 nearby fire stations.
I think they do it out of fear that the politicians at the front of
the parade are questioning their funding. The most interesting
vehicles were some old sports cars, a series-III or IV Metropolitan (I
can never tell) and some really old fire engines from the PA National
Fire Museum. Those are always a treat, as the drivers and crew are
wearing period clothing and they make a point of really showing off
the aerial ladder truck.

Christie took a bunch of pictures. I'll post a link once she uploads them.

Re: So I've been thinking ...

2009-05-27 Thread Joseph McAllister
We had this discussion. The patent in question was a modification to
the existing K mount to facilitate the use of both old and new weather
sealing rings in the current and future DA lenses. You'll probably be
able to see it in the K7, in that the camera body's mount plate is
slightly larger in diameter, and the outer edge is chamfered to
accommodate the weather sealing band found in the two new "kit"
lenses. It's a flat band, not a round ring like the earlier lenses
have. old O versus new [] in cross section. Camera body mount will
be / vs | at it's outer edge. Band will be slightly bend
when in contact with mount, creating pressure at the sealing point by
deflection, while maintaining weather sealing by compression with old
mount plate and sealing rings. Lenses without any weather sealing
component will still seat normally.

Or something like that. :-)

P.S. I just looked at my 17-70 SDM with a magnifier and it's sealing
ring is more like ___/°/ in that the sealing edge is at a 45° angle
to the plane of the lens' mount plate. The 18-250 has no sealing ring
at all, nor does the 31 ltd., but the DA* 200 has the same 45° rubber
as the 17-70 SDM.

On May 27, 2009, at 09:00 , Nick Wright wrote:

Uh oh, watch out!

Anyway.

I seem to recall something recently about a Pentax patent detailing a
lens mount with two bayonets.

And now we have Pentax maybe putting full-frame 35mm digital lenses
back in their roadmap.

So I was thinking, would it be possible that the new Pentax 645 has a
mount that allows you to attach both 645 and 35mm FF lenses without an
adaptor?

And then I thought, the camera could automatically sense which kind of
lens was on the camera. If a 645 lens was attached the sensor was in
"645 mode" but if a 35mm lens was attached then it reduced itself to a
24x35mm frame and appropriate resolution.

Would that be possible? Surely it would be. The better question would
be, is it feasible?
