That's really great weather, Joseph, but...how do you stand the very
high percentage of precipitation and the omnipresent GRAY overcast?

You just said, sun after 5 PM. Seattle happens.

Wouldn't you like the sun during the day?

Just askin'...

Check your percentages of rainy days vs sunny days here against many
other places. It is true we have more days of rain, but up here, it's
usually just a mist or light drizzle, which is why we don't carry
umbrellas. No need.

This Afternoon - Mostly sunny. Highs in the upper 60s to mid 70s.
North wind to 10 mph.

While it's true that many of our days start out cloudy, we have what
are called sun breaks in the afternoon, and nice sunsets. The sun
was out today from noon until sunset at 9:10 pm. It'll be back up (no
clouds) at 05:07 am tomorrow, and drive the temperature all the way up
to the low 70s. Actually, in Everett, it only made it to 69.8 Friday
at 4:51 pm:
Temperature: 69.8°F / 21.0°C | Humidity: 22% | Pressure: 29.65in /
1003.9hPa (Steady) | Conditions: Clear | Wind Direction: East | Wind
Speed: 5.4mph / 8.7km/h

Saturday - Mostly sunny and warmer. Highs in the 70s. Light wind.

I personally like a high overcast and temps in the mid 60s. Higher is
too hot. I've had several carcinomas removed from my back as a result
most likely of to much beach time in Florida and San Diego in my
twenties, and am advised to wear long sleeves, long pants, and big
floppy hats when I go out in the sun. So I don't spend as much time as
I'd like outdoors on sunny days until a few hours before sunset or a
few hours after sunrise.

Re: OT: GPS and geotagging images - Columbus V900

2009-06-27 Thread Jens
Hello again
I would like to explain the simplicity of geo-tagging with Columbus V900.
In a simple application called Time Album for Columbus 1.6.1 you import your
JPEG's and the GPS tracking file (from the Columbus V900), which has the
exptension CSV. After having made sure the time is adjusted correctly
(camera/recorded sattelite time) you make (export) a .MMZ or .NMEA file. These
files are meant for showing you journey in Google Maps. Before doing this you
get the option to copy and save your image files in annother file (archive)
called GPSed. The files in the GPSed file are now tagged with Longitude,
Latitude and Altitude. This is a quite easy way to geo-tag your images.

But still, it would be very simple and easy if all this was done in real-time
in the camera, during the actual shooting :-)
This will of course eventually be a feature in new cameras in a few years
(nikon allready made a Coolpix PS that does this. More will follow - or we'll
get a plug-in option for GPS tracking and geo-tagging devices. I believe Nikon
alreay made one of these too.

Regards
Jens

 Great little thing.
 http://www.blog-shmog.com/2009/01/04/columbus-v900-an-in-depth-review

The software that comes with it actually CAN geotag the images, quite
 easily.
(the info can be seen, if you click on file info in Photoshop.
Only problem is, that the clock in the camera must be set to satelite
time, meaning you need to set the camera clock to the same time as
the clock on the internet - which you get from you computer. The
software does - however allow you to transform you images to annother
recording time, so your GPS track will correspond with your image
 files.

I can recommend using this to anyone who want to know where the
pictures where taken. Especially since this tagging device for images
is the only on available, that comes with a memory card (Micro SD) -
so can can store millions of Waypoints - maybe fro a journey that last
a long time. It also has a battery saving mode (spy mode) that allows
the thing to track for 30 days without charging the battery.

The thiong comes with a lot of software - to set the clock - to edit
EXIF data (NICE) and to show your journey on Google maps - including
showing your photographs along the way.

A I work as a planning photographer I find it very nice to be able to
make a slide show on a map. And I can geotag my images for the benefit
 of other picture users/customers.

 By the way:
I tag all my images, for archiving purposes, in Fotostation 6.0

New lens - 300mm or 400mm - Sigma 135-400mm APO

2009-06-27 Thread Jens
Hello list
I was recently recommended, by some og you great guys, buying af Pentax 300mm
F4 lens.
I decided the cost was too high (considering how litle use this lens would get).
So, I got a used Sigma 135-400mm APO lens.
I have made som test shots, an I must say I'm not thrilled. Not very sharp, but
still much better than my old Tokina 500mm mirror lens. But the Sigma cannot
compete at all with neither the M* 4/300mm or the FA* 2.8 80-200mm. But I
wanted auto focus and 300mm or more.

I will, however do some more test at very short shutter speeds - to see if that
helps. Perhaps 1/2000 secs.

Big thanks to Mark, Brian, Gaydon, Dave, Ann, Bob W., Rob, Bob S.,
 Larry,
Paul, Jack, and Subash. A few points:

The shot is a deep crop with hefty recovery of highlights in Lightroom
(recovery slider). The camera was set to Auto WB (5100K), and I bumped
 it
up to 8005K in Lightroom.. I wanted feedback to see if it was too
 much/not
enough, whatever. So, Rob, yes, I was unsure ;-). The camera was also
 set
to +EV 7, so I brought down the exposure in Lightroom to -.75, and then
added strong contrast and bumped saturation up from 0 to 10. Then I
 was
 done.

I was, in fact, driving, and I never put my nose behind the camera; I
 just
held on to the steering wheel and tried to aim it in the right
 direction. I
had no idea what my camera was set to, so like I said, it's a real Hail
 Mary
 shot--saved by a bit of post-processing.

Yes, Brian, I thought I might be able to sneak this into the PUG, but
 it's
 ok that I can't.

Hey, Bob S. want to go photodriving with me along I-90? ;-)

 Big cheers everyone, Christine

RE: New lens - 300mm or 400mm - Sigma 135-400mm APO

2009-06-27 Thread John Whittingham
Hi Jens

I had the 135-400 for a while and was quite dissappointed with it, I went back
to using the 300/4 APO with 1.4 EX TC and 70-200/2.8. Apparently the new
120-400 HSM is much better, but after seeing samples from one being sold for
£400 on Ebay, I resigned myself to sticking with DA*300/4 amd Tamron 1.4 TC
I'd love to find a Sigma 400/5.6 APO at a reasonable cost though to get the
full benefit of SR, however recently I'xe come to the conclusion thet there's
no substitute for fast shutter speeds when shooting wildlife and sports.

Jens

Geso Pickering Horse show

Again nothing special or out of my ordinary equine stuff.

Just thought i'd share.

D200, 70-200 f2.8 VR, unadjusted and imported straight to jalbum.

I've owned the D200 for just over 3 years now, and still play around
with settings to get a nice jpeg image. I read up on a few Nikon
review sites lately and many are suggesting not using the adobe rgb
colour setting, but the default srgb. Shot these 49 photos as srgb. I
can see they may need a touch of contrast or saturation, but the
sharpness seems better, using a custom setting of +1 and defaults on
everything else.
Sharpness was/is my major complaint of the D200. I hear the D300 is much better.

Time will tell.

RE: PESO / GESO Bees

2009-06-27 Thread Bob W
Nice opportunity, well taken, Chris. I love honey, and always try to buy or
at least sample the local produce wherever I go. Our housemaster kept a
couple of hives among the apple and pear trees in our boarding house garden
at school, so I got to see it all close up quite often. I particularly like
your shots of the comb, and it's good to see an over-abundance of bees in
these threatened times!

Of course, if you want to see how it really should be done, take a look at
Eric Valli's book The Honey Hunters of Nepal. Stunning stuff.

I poked my nose round the corner and took some pictures from

rescuing a hive that had got out of hand in someone's garden.
 He then said

I have made som test shots, an I must say I'm not thrilled. Not very sharp,
but still much better than my old Tokina 500mm mirror lens. But the Sigma
cannot compete at all with neither the M* 4/300mm or the FA* 2.8 80-200mm.
But I wanted auto focus and 300mm or more.

I will, however do some more test at very short shutter speeds - to see if
 that helps. Perhaps 1/2000 secs.

*

Two beekeepers are chatting. One says to the other, ' So how many bees
do you have then?'

The second beekeeper answers, 'Oh about ten thousand'.

The first says, 'Ten thousand, eh? Right. And so how many hives do you have?'

The second answers, ' Ten hives'.

The first says, 'Ten? Hmmm, ten thousand bees, ten hives. Hmmm.' He nods
approvingly.

The second beekeeper asks, 'So how many bees do you have?'

The first says, 'Me? Oh, I've got about a million.'

The second beekeeper looks surprised. 'A million! Holy cow, how many
hives do you have?'

The first answers 'Oh just the one hive'.

The second is astonished. 'A million bees and only one hive???'

The first pauses and thinks, realising the gravity of the situation.

He says 'Yeah well., fuck 'em, they're only bees...'

this kind of photography, but perhaps introduction of K-7 with its
allegedly better AF system would help you to move away from center based

That's pretty much the enforced composition in this type of photography. I

I am cameraless now as I sold all my Pentax stuff this AM at another

were selling, selling, selling! :-)

I am probably going to get this camera with the 17mm lens. I probably
will wait awhile before getting other lenses until Oly comes out with
other single focal length primes. Ultimately I am looking for a basic
three lens kit, WA, Std, and medium tele.

I told the KEH guy that I had been doing this photo stuff for over 55
years now and was getting tired of keeping up with all the gear.
Nowadays I shoot for the web or for the wife. All she needs are 4x6

Re: New Oly E-P1

2009-06-27 Thread P. J. Alling
You know you probably could have gotten back to basics with a nice
subset of the equipment you already owned. I use the Pentax Ds, A-24
f2.8, Fa 43mm and M 85 f2.0 exactly that way. (I'd use a 35mm f2.0
instead of the 43mm but I like a longish normal).

Walter Hamler wrote:

I am cameraless now as I sold all my Pentax stuff this AM at another
camera store. KEH was there buying, buying, buying! And lots of folks
were selling, selling, selling!

All she needs are 4x6
prints. Getting back to simple!

Apparently the 17 mil is made of - - plastic - - ugh!

Well, I've sold two of my voigtlander lenses, waiting on a third, and
the R-D1 will be up Sunday night. Interestingly I've kept the
Voigtlander 15mm digital finder (correct field of view for the 15mm lens
on a 1.5x sensor camera In a few years I will source the collection again.

In fact I may not bother with the 28 next time - the 15 4.5 was my favourite:

I'll get the M version next time and who knows, might be rich enough to

Good luck with the buying ;-)

I've heard that Asterix is also the inspiration for Pentax's top range lenses.

2009/6/27 Bob W p...@web-options.com:
Just back 2-3 hours ago from an extremely enjoyable week in Brittany. I
discovered the dolmen that is supposedly the inspiration for the village of
Asterix - Severalpix to follow. On the last evening I went in search of a
menhir called Gargantua's Finger, but it was in the grounds of a place that
was closed by the time I got there.

However, not wanting to waste my time, I followed up on something I couldn't
understand on the local 1:25,000 map, and found a wonderful hidden trail,
which I suspect the farmer wants to keep hidden. Along the trail I found
this perfect Obelix-style menhir which is not marked on the map and appears
to have been deliberately hidden in this grove, either by the Christians who
pushed it half over, or by the farmer not wanting the heritage authorities
to know about it. I couldn't get closer because the field is full of crops
which I wasn't about to trample on:

 http://www.web-options.com/Menhir.jpg

It's not a great picture, but the terrible pun came to me in a blaze of
 glory, and I can't resist.

Here's Obelix, in case anyone out there is not familiar with him:

We hit 35* C yesterday, but it won't last long. And the

spend quite a bit of time outdoors. Doesn't bother me much.

Hope you get some cooler weather soon.

Hi Paul. But I have to point out that won't last long is
 the keyword
in your case. In ours, it will be this way until mid
 September if not
later... Julia, sitting beside me, adds that I am being seriously
  optimistic here.

Could be worse. Foggy here today. So..
 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wear/8122092.stm

Hmm. As I write we're in the middle of a torrential downpour and noisy
electrical storm. It's been hot and muggy all day. While I was walking home
the thunderclaps were coming about 1 second after the lightning bolt, so the
storm was more or less overhead, but there were few raindrops. As I closed
the front door the deluge began and right now it is distinctly Noachian.

RE: New Oly E-P1

I noticed Jessops in London pushing them today so I went in to have a look.
The Olympus demonstrators were there so I played with one. It's quite nice,
reasonable build quality, lovely size and design but what kills it stone
dead for me is that there is no viewfinder except the screen on the back,
which I can only see properly if I put my reading glasses on, so it's a big
no-no for me unfortunately, and I told the man from Olympus. I also told him
that I own an E-1 and an E-500, and made sure he saw my M8 so he knew they'd
really lost a likely sale by that omission.

There I was taking pictures of the setup for a local music festival,
Togfest

at Bradwell Abbey in Milton Keynes, when someone mentioned that there were
some beekeepers on site.

I poked my nose round the corner and took some pictures from a respectful
distance and one of the beekeepers came and explained that they were
rescuing a hive that had got out of hand in someone's garden. He then said
that they would welcome some photos for training purposes and would I mind
getting suited up and getting in amongst them. What an opportunity! Even
when he said that he couldn't guarantee that I wouldn't get stung (I
didn't)

I thought it was an opportunity too good to miss.

Here's the PESO - click on the symbol to the left of the green bar at the
top for the full GESO. K10D, DA* 16-50.

http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/Togfest09/Togfest2009/Bees/slides/20090625_IGP4

http://tinyurl.com/qjaza3

I wasn't prepared and was a little nervous (thanks Pentax anti-shake) so
I've asked them if I can have another go in more controlled circumstances.
