RE: It's about freaking time...
Hi Doug It looks good - clean lines and everything works. Only thing I feel needs attention is where you've got images inline like on the "about us" and "custom" pages - you could do with a little more space between the text and the images. Thanks for the suggestions and all around cheer-up, Brian, Paul, & Godfrey. I'll take a rest and try one of the better whizzy-wigs. Suggestions much appreciated. Using Notepad to write HTML mark-up is a recipe for the sort of head-banging that you're experiencing. Grab a HTML editor - they are just text editors with enhancements to make writing HTML easy (I use HTML Kit - free for private use and it has HTML-Tidy built in to find all those typos). If you'd rather not hand-code, try a WYSIWYG editor. Someone here mentioned Komposer a month or two back. I don't use it but I had a quick look at it - seems fine: http://kompozer.net/ And please, please don't use MS Word to produce HTML. It produces masses of bloated text liberally strewn with MS-specific tags. It might produce readable web pages but as browsers become more standards complaint, it might not in the future. Yes, Christine - Definitely take a look at Kompozer. It's relatively easy to use in WYSIWYG and it lets you tweak the source if you're so inclined - and it includes a CSS editor. I once made an attempt to do a web page using MSPublisher. After I saw how bloated it was with useless text I threw that idea out the window along with the file(s) I had just created. -p -Original Message- >From: Brian Walters >Sent: Jul 3, 2009 1:17 AM >To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List >Subject: Re: Way OT @ $#*woman throws in towel on writing code*#$@ > >Christine > >I agree totally with Graydon. That's a lot like saying your first two tries at making bread produced patio stones, so you're going to take arsenic now. Open Office produces much better HTML than Word -- Word's HTML is proverbially awful -- so if you want to use a WYSIWIG editor to generate HTML, it's a better choice. Way OT @ $#*woman throws in towel on writing code*#$@
Up until 2 days ago I had never written 1 line of html code--not one--for any purpose. I have spent the last two days, however, learning about html and learning how to write some html code using Notepad so that I might get a simple index page up. Oh my gosh, am I brain dead. (Aside: as I write this, I can hear the most beautiful live xylophone music coming through my study window. It's absolutely delightful. Someone is playing in his or her backyard somewhere across the alley.) I did, in fact, get something written, but oh, is it stinky--and I never did get it just the way I wanted. On the one hand I am a bit proud that I learned to write some code--and I learned how to write a css style sheet--and I was successful at linking the two, though they didn't link at first, and it took me forever to find the typo. I had written *type="test/css"* instead of *text*. Ugh! And I got the jpeg to link to where I *almost* wanted it, but I never could figure out how to get my little two item list to align the way I wanted to. Still, like I said, I'm a bit proud of my meager results here. But that's just the problem--oh, how meager the results are! I have no problem being a beginner at anything--it's where everyone starts when learning something new, but gee wiz, you'd think after 2 days I'd be a little further along! Moreover, I started looking at the code for some elegantly simple web pages that I admire, and I'm totally intimidated by the complexity of the code and feel quite sure it would take me most of the next 12 months just to get close to learning this stuff. Hence, I'm going to throw in the towel and will probably use Word Web Pages to get something up. Lastly, to all you Cyber Techie Code Writers who can write this stuff at the speed of light, I sincerely tip my hat to you in admiration. Re: Cellphones while travelling in the US & Canada
Paul, Just in case, - consider buying a cheap unlocked GSM cell phone with the right frequencies from e-Bay, and a separate prepaid (and refillable) sim card - also from eBay. This way you will be left with a cheap and potentially usable cell phone. (I am not sure if prepaid cell phones that you buy in Walmart etc can be easily unlocked or not). Very often you can buy some promotional sim-cards on eBay at half the price of what the minutes are worth otherwise. Couple years ago I bought couple of sim cards for Tuyo (it's an IDT-owned cell phone company using T-mobile's network). If you are within populated area, T-mobile's network works just fine. Recharging with Tuyo was just fine (online or over the phone), but outside of recharing their customer service sucks. Also, their balance if not renewed expires one day earlier that they claim. (but what do you care?) http://www.tuyo.com (they seem to have coverage in HI as well.) Also, it has good rates for international calls to many countries from the US. Re: Flatbed glass cleaning?
Anthony Farr wrote: 2009/7/2 mike wilson : Newspaper, vinegar and elbow grease. Newspaper as a glass polisher is a hangover from the good/bad old days when newsprint ink contained carbon black, the same stuff that Lenspens use. Modern newsprint ink is plastic based and will only contribute to more smudginess. That's the theory but I haven't found it to be true in practice. Works just as well as it has always done. CD/DVD cleaning spray is effective and mostly harmless to transparent plastics if the platen isn't glass. I believe they're essentially isopropyl alcohol. Paper towels contain wood fibre which could be abrasive. A well worn, well washed cotton handkerchief is one of the best cleaning cloths around, because it is absorbent and collects the grease that the cleaning liquid has released. Microfibre cloths are great for buffing cleaning marks off a clean but streaky surface, but if there's any grease about they'll spread it everywhere as they have no absorbency. Once the plate is clean, keep a broad, soft brush handy for whisking away dust. Re: Lightroom and backed up catalogue question
Regards backup, you should always have at least two duplicates, plus your working copy of the Lightroom .lrcat file in its enclosing directory, and the entire original image file repository on separate hard drive volumes. The more the merrier. Use a backup or synchronizing utility application to do this for you rather than trying to remember to do it manually. (On Mac OS X, I use ChronoSync for this purpose. It is excellent and not expensive.) -- Godfrey www.gdgphoto.com www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto www.twitter.com/godfreydigiorgi -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Lightroom does not have the concept of importing the originals into a specially maintained file system structure as Aperture does. Importing in Lightroom parlance means "storing the original image file locations, file system info and metadata into the database for use". As a convenience to the importing process, Lightroom can move or copy the originals to a locate that it will structure for you (by creating directories in a date oriented hierarchy), but it's up to you to be sure that the originals are backed up. To move an entire Lightroom catalog and its original files to an external drive volume, you move the original files however you have them organized (most conveniently in one directory tree) to the new volume, then copy the entire directory containing the Lightroom .lrcat and .lrdata files there separately. Once everything has been copied, update the catalog so it uses the originals in the new location - double click on the .lrcat file that is located on the external volume :: that ensures that you update the correct catalog file. - In the Library module, Folders panel, control-click (right-click on Windows or if you're using a two-button mouse on Mac OS X) on the folders that appear there and choose the "Update Folder Location..." command from the popup menu. - Navigate to the new location of the folder on the external drive and click OK. You'll need to do this for each folder in the Folders panel unless you have all your folders in one directory tree and have the root folder of that tree in the Folders panel. If you do, and you do it just once for the root folder, all the others will be automatically updated as well. If your Folders panel shows individual folders that you know are all in the same tree but doesn't show the root folder, you can right-click on the folders there and choose "Add Parent Folder" ... do this repeatedly until all your folders are shown as under one root folder, then update the location of that root folder. -- Godfrey www.gdgphoto.com www.flickr.com/photos/gdgphoto www.twitter.com/godfreydigiorgi -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I have no idea about Lightroom specifically, but if (as it sounds) it's using a database to store the history information, the essential thing is to take your backup to some other machine, load it on to that machine, and try to use it. That's about the only way to be sure that you have got all the necessary bits and pieces in the backup. I use something called ufraw, which leaves simple text files containing settings next to the image files; not very flexible, but more robust than the database approach. -- Graydon -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Is it too late to comment? :-) I love "Lee", awesome. That Godfrey dude looks a bit uncomfortable; probably not used to being around cameras. Not sure about "Dave & Felipe", the wide angle does not favour Dave...unless he's naturally deformed :-) However, his expression is great, so it's probably a keeper. Good luck selling, Nick! I already have one of these cuties, but I hardly ever use it. By the way, I have a friend called Nick Wright. Re: Exploring Boston: Bromfield Camera
Mark, Sadly, I know of no "proper" camera stores in Boston. There used to be plenty of Ritz Camera, including one on Beacon St in Brookline, but they all closed. Not that they were any help to people like me, shooting a camera brand that is going to go bust any day now. Ironic they went bust before Pentax did. Brookline is a great place, and I would suggest walking into the city whenever it's for leisure. Plenty of opportunities for street shots on the way. Maybe once you're installed we should organise a little PDML Boston Chapter get-together, to show you not everyone living in Boston is a masshole. Re: Opinion wanted on Pose
From: "William Robb" I shot a make up shoot yesterday for a girl in my wife's office. She was less than happy with the pictures her photographer gave her, so I offered to make it right for her. This pose was her idea, and I'm not quire sure if I like it. Opinions welcome. In wedding photography, I contend only two opinions matter - the bride's and the bride's mama. It's technically well done; well lit. And it's what SHE wanted. The only thing I would question is why is he staring off into space instead of looking at her in adoration? Re: PESO: So what do you do..
From: Rob Studdert ...if you're planning limited budget wedding? Ask your big brother to be photographer and chauffeur of course! Weddings aren't my forte photographically and severe winds, gray skies and driving rain (and having to play brother, driver and photographer) don't lend themselves to induce a stressless day but we all survived sans tears. Caveat was no flash, this of course limited the scope for shots but negated one potential major source of stuff ups and distraction (given my lack of flash skills). I shot less than I had planned but I think I did OK with the ones that counted. The following is one of my favourites from the day, shot up close with the DA16-45 at 45mm f5.6 1/125 at ISO 500 K20D: http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~distudio/temp/IMGK02779.jpg (~550kB) Nicely done. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
