Re: PESO Dunes
Thanks, Boris. The problem is indeed the tree. My intention was to capture the whole tree in the right part and move the middle one to the left. Should have used a tripod. Editing on the images is heavy, on the second one maybe a little overdone. Indeed a HDR rendering from a single RAW file and other tweeks. The dunes are officially wet dunes. Toine 2009/8/23 Boris Liberman bori...@gmail.com: Toine, both scenes are very good, though of course you and I have different notion of what dune is ;-). In fact, I quite like the second photo though I wish you could have moved your camera just a bit to the right to include more of that tree there. Yet, I must say that I find both shots somewhat overprocessed. Without knowing exactly what you did it is hard to put my finger on what is bothering me, but it is somehow very obvious that you applied some rather serious editing here (HDR perhaps?). RE: [Not Pentax] Interesting advanced compacts cameras announced
The E-P1 Has some faults, but they are mostly speed of operation, especially the AF. The IQ is excellent. I've also adapted to shooting off the LCD, and, to my surprise, it's not really a deal breaker for me anymore. This camera is essentially just what is needed to make a good image. Re: DA 16-50 lens with faulty SDM?
Resend: (probably obsolete by now but I am happy I can finally post) Had the same thing on my K10D with a ten week old 16-50 bought from a gentleman who claims he used it twice before having to put it up for sale to raise funds for his house payments. Shaft drive wouldn't work either, playing with AF/MF on lens and body didn't have any impact either. Took it to Pentax Germany (lucky to live nearby), cross tested with another 16-50 and a K20D and left it there for repair. Got a letter a few days later from Maerz, the new outsourced repair place saying it would take longer, the SDM control chip had bought it and the spare part wasn't in stock. As time ran out, I finally contacted Pentax again, told them of an upcoming wedding (just a friend's, I don't shoot them for a living) and they ended up giving me a new lens. So now that I have the lens, I like it a lot, I don't find AF overwhelmingly quick but it hunts much less than my other lenses and I appreciate both how quiet the AF is and how little mirror/shutter noise gets past the weather sealing; it makes shooting much more quiet than with any of my other glass. On the downside, there is visible distortion at 16mm and images are soft throughout the aperture range to a point where it has me thinking about going back to Pentax for another copy... Re: Punting
Nice job, Cotty! Nice visuals there.. It looks like you were chasing the boat, running on the sidewalk. Your guy is talking too much, and making a big deal out of simple thing. I learnt how to punt in my mid-teens on a lake with a lot of reed that we used to hide in. My dad and I were hunting ducks there, and punting was the easiest way to navigate through the reed islands. It is not a big deal, just a matter of practice. Sorry, I am a bit bitter toward noisy news anchors, commentators, etc. Watching tennis turnaments in the last few days contributed to that. Besides other things, I was extrmely irritated hearing ignorant ESPN commentators who were mispronouncing names of Russian tennis players (stress on a wrong syllable), while you can hear the umpire (and probably the stadium announcer) pronouncing them correctly (SharApova and DemEntieva, as opposed to ESPN's SharapOva and DementiEva). photographing outdoor car shows
There was a hotrod show in Scotts Valley today (about 5 miles from my house). I figured that it would be a good opportunity to park the racecar near the show, with the for sale signs prominantly displayed. I didn't get any nibbles on my racecar, but I spent some time wandering about with my K20 and 18-250. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157622125850288/ Getting decent exposures when shooting cars in full sunlight is pretty challenging. The specular reflections will just blow out, and if you try to expose for the highlights, then everything else is so underexposed as to be useless. Short of carrying fill reflectors, or dealing with a fill flash, is there anything that can be done? Or is it simply a case that if you want good shots of a shiny hotrod with lots of chrome, you're going to have to do it in shade, or spend a lot of work, or both? -- The first step is learning to take great photos, the second step is learning to throw away ones that are merely good.
