Ann,

So, I'll share yet another idea just for the heck of it:
Chairful.

Ghm.. I just looked in Google, and it turns out that I was not the first
to make this word up: There are over 6000 of pages containing this word.

In some cases, it is even used in a photo title:

Re: PESO Dunes

2009-08-23 Thread Toine
Thanks, Boris. The problem is indeed the tree. My intention was to
capture the whole tree in the right part and move the middle one to
the left. Should have used a tripod.
Editing on the images is heavy, on the second one maybe a little
overdone. Indeed a HDR rendering from a single RAW file and other
tweeks.
The dunes are officially wet dunes.

Toine

2009/8/23 Boris Liberman bori...@gmail.com:
Toine, both scenes are very good, though of course you and I have
different notion of what dune is ;-). In fact, I quite like the second
photo though I wish you could have moved your camera just a bit to the
right to include more of that tree there. Yet, I must say that I find
both shots somewhat overprocessed. Without knowing exactly what you
did it is hard to put my finger on what is bothering me, but it is
somehow very obvious that you applied some rather serious editing here
 (HDR perhaps?).

My limited readings on the subject point to a Dual AF problem, not an

SDM-only lenses have much less problem if at all. I remember a Pentax

driven but not both as it posed manufacturing and reliability

I posted a little gallery for Grace's t-ball team. It's a bit
redundant in that I made sure I posted at least one pic of each kid
batting, but I think it's mildly entertaining as well. Notice that
most of these four-year-old batters are hitting pitched balls. The T
was used mainly in the beginning of the season. Kids learn fast.

RE: [Not Pentax] Interesting advanced compacts cameras announced

2009-08-23 Thread Desjardins, Steve
The E-P1 Has some faults, but they are mostly speed of operation, especially
the AF. The IQ is excellent. I've also adapted to shooting off the LCD, and,
to my surprise, it's not really a deal breaker for me anymore. This camera is
essentially just what is needed to make a good image. I'm definitely thinking
of getting the 17mm, at which point is its pocketable enough to make PS's
irrelevant.

No condescension implied. I'm just bemused by why every announcement

even on lists that are not Canon centric.

This G11 isn't much smaller than the Olympus E-P1. At the same time,
it lacks interchangeable lenses and has a much smaller sensor. Why is
it so interesting to so many people?

Re: DA 16-50 lens with faulty SDM?

2009-08-23 Thread Eckehard Wegner
Resend:
(probably obsolete by now but I am happy I can finally post)
Had the same thing on my K10D with a ten week old 16-50 bought from a
gentleman who claims he used it twice before having to put it up for sale to
raise funds for his house payments. Shaft drive wouldn't work either,
playing with AF/MF on lens and body didn't have any impact either.

Took it to Pentax Germany (lucky to live nearby), cross tested with another
16-50 and a K20D and left it there for repair. Got a letter a few days later
from Maerz, the new outsourced repair place saying it would take longer, the
SDM control chip had bought it and the spare part wasn't in stock. As time
ran out, I finally contacted Pentax again, told them of an upcoming wedding
(just a friend's, I don't shoot them for a living) and they ended up giving
 me a new lens.

So now that I have the lens, I like it a lot, I don't find AF overwhelmingly
quick but it hunts much less than my other lenses and I appreciate both how
quiet the AF is and how little mirror/shutter noise gets past the weather
sealing; it makes shooting much more quiet than with any of my other glass.
On the downside, there is visible distortion at 16mm and images are soft
throughout the aperture range to a point where it has me thinking about
going back to Pentax for another copy...

 Cheers
 Ecke

It should be dróttkvætt with runes.

Five runes, seven runes, five runes.

Runes are phonetic, not ideographic!

Runes are just a family of alphabets that have fallen into general
disuse; they're not conceptually different from the latin characters
we're all used to using.

PESO: model car racetrack (IR)

2009-08-23 Thread Ralf R. Radermacher
Arrived at Liège this afternoon and had forgotten the K-7's battery in
the charger at home. So, I've spent a day doing more IR with the *istDS.

This is a panorama out of three shots, auto-assembled with Hugin. The
location is a model car racetrack in the approach path of runway 23R at
Liège's Bierset airport, hence the runway markers on the right.

Enjoy...

Re: Punting

2009-08-23 Thread Igor Roshchin

Nice job, Cotty!

Nice visuals there.. It looks like you were chasing the boat,
running on the sidewalk.

Your guy is talking too much, and making a big deal out of simple
thing.
I learnt how to punt in my mid-teens on a lake with a lot of reed
that we used to hide in. My dad and I were hunting ducks there, and
punting was the easiest way to navigate through the reed islands.
It is not a big deal, just a matter of practice.

Sorry, I am a bit bitter toward noisy news anchors, commentators, etc.
Watching tennis turnaments in the last few days contributed to that.
Besides other things, I was extrmely irritated hearing ignorant ESPN
commentators who were mispronouncing names of Russian tennis players
(stress on a wrong syllable), while you can hear the umpire (and
probably the stadium announcer) pronouncing them correctly
(SharApova and DemEntieva, as opposed to ESPN's SharapOva and
DementiEva).

Cheers,

Igor

Thanks, Cotty. So the fence doesn't bother you then. I printed the pic

I was going to label this OT, except that a few PDMLers met recently in
Oxford to photograph, and ended up down by the river. As it happens I
was there a couple of weeks ago to film our weather presenter learning
how to punt. Proud of this one as it's all off the shoulder except the
last shot. Nicely edited (not by me), runs about 5 mins

It's intriguing. The fence creates tension. Not necessarily a bad thing.

photographing outdoor car shows

2009-08-23 Thread Larry Colen
There was a hotrod show in Scotts Valley today (about 5 miles from my
house). I figured that it would be a good opportunity to park the
racecar near the show, with the for sale signs prominantly
displayed.

I didn't get any nibbles on my racecar, but I spent some time
wandering about with my K20 and 18-250.

Getting decent exposures when shooting cars in full sunlight is pretty
challenging. The specular reflections will just blow out, and
if you try to expose for the highlights, then everything else is so
underexposed as to be useless.

Short of carrying fill reflectors, or dealing with a fill flash, is
there anything that can be done? Or is it simply a case that if you
want good shots of a shiny hotrod with lots of chrome, you're going to
have to do it in shade, or spend a lot of work, or both?

Re: What's half way between Pittsburgh and Boston?

2009-08-23 Thread P. J. Alling
I've considered this question for a couple of days. Apparently Scranton
PA, a place thats been described to me as the middle of nowhere, is
about half way between Pittsburgh and Boston. So I guess there's really
nothing half way between Pittsburgh and Boston...

Mark Roberts wrote:

I'm finishing up the work on the house in Pittsburgh (it gets

for Boston on Wednesday. I'm thinking of splitting the trip into two
days and I'm looking for somewhere interesting to stay approximately
half way through the journet. I've considered New York City but I'm
not entirely comfortable with taking the motorcycle through there.

Any suggestions from the teeming millions of the PDML much
appreciated.
