Yis, thus is vary finny:-)

It reminds me of the TV show 'allo 'allo (Hallo Hallo).
The actors actually all spoke English. But still they were able to speak French
with a german accent. Still in English, of cource. Brilliant show :-)

The JOBO Photo GPS has a Geo Hint button. This can be pressed before or after
endtering locations (inside buildings etc.) with no or poor GPS signal AND for
situations where I must use shutter speeds faster than 1/180 sec. If I press
this button when changing lovation, the software for teh JOBO Photo GPS will
still be able to tag the images reasonably accurate. The more ofte I press the
Geo Hint button, the more accurate geotagging. I practice the limitations
provided by Pentax (not activating the hot-shoe at fast shutter speeds) will
not be a great problom. Unless of cource I want to geotag my aerial photograps,
wher shutterspeeds typically will be faster than 1/1000 secs - and I wont have
time to press the Geo Hint Button. In situations like aerial photography I will
just use annother tracer.

Yes, it is pretty monotone. I had a bit of a play with a BW conversion
but I think I prefer the colour, what there is of it!

Here's what I came up with:

2 Funny PESOs: Street Clown and a Ghostbuster

2009-11-12 Thread Igor Roshchin

1. I took this shot in Turin, Italy in September:
http://www.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Italy2009/_IRP0141.jpg

A clown was staying at the street intersection, doing some funny tricks
in front of the traffic stopped for the red light.
As we crossed the street he tried to follow us.
I had my camera in my hand, but it was a second or two and no time to
look through the viewfinder - I shot it "from the hip".

2. The second one is a photo of a ghostbuster:

Taken at the Castle of Pavone near Turin.

Two big advantages to me of digital:
1. A huge back catalogue of recordings is now available that had ceased
to be so on vinyl.

2. They are much safer (for them...) to be played when inebriated.

Is there a way to engage such a function - for instance in a mode designed for

I thought the modern offerings had a burst mode for high speed flash?

I respectfully disagree here, gentlemen. The problem is alignment
precision, especially with time, after sensor has been changed many

consequently - high price or alternatively, it can make the user life
miserable.

My understanding of the design is that the lens and sensor come as one

I just purchased all the Beatles remastered CD's in Stereo within the
last two months. There is a HUGE difference that I can hear, compared
to the earlier CD's. Yay!

OTOH...That kind of sucks because now I want to hear what they sound
like on LP ($30- $50/per new LP), with a decent system.

I'm guessing that even on mediocre playback gear I'll hear more on
LPs, based on my lone, recently purchased, 20+ year old Beatles
compilation LP.

It's getting better all the the time, here comes the sun, baby you can
drive my car, beep beep, mmm, beep beep, YEAH!

similar stories, and the list changes according to the tone of the
article you are reading.

FWIW, the motorcyclist didn't hit the kangaroo in Bondi Junction, he
merely lived there - but not any more :-( The accident happened
several hundred kliks out of town. Kangaroos only hop down the

Re: How can I fire a flash at 1/1000 secs?

2009-11-12 Thread Peter Loveday

I will let you guys know when and if I get answers.

I don't think there's much JOBO can do about it, the camera simply doesn't
signal the GPS.

If there is a way I'd be very interested. I have previously tried to fire a
slaved camera using RF triggers this way (such that a stationary camera on a
tripod would take a shot from a different angle every time I take one
myself). It works great, but not above 1/180 :(

Please Pentax, give us an option to trigger the flash no matter what.

a good used turntable plus a USB audio interface will do much better
(some interfaces can't handle the low level signal and bias of a
turntable output, in which case something like a Rolls phono preamp or a
used receiver with a good phono stage will be needed) FireWire audio
interfaces are a step up, i use USB and am relatively happy; there are
tools to make the whole thing easier, but you can get by with free
software like GarageBand or Audacity

Sort of like the one that controls whether the shutter will release in

I agree with everything you say. My point was simply that when cops
or other investigators ask questions, the ~way~ those questions are
answered is often as important to the investigator as what's said.
Shifty eyes, uncomfortable looks, hesitation, stammering, profuse
sweating, turning and fleeing all raise red flags.

 OMG!... sorry for, the OT...

I know my observations, forthcoming, are not scientific and
 subjective
 to the extreme... BUT...

Like many, I got a CD player in the mid '80's and never
 looked back.
The apparent 0 background noise, no clicking, pops, dust,
 made me love
 CD's.

My son told me two months ago that he was interested in
 vinyl records.
That's all it took to make me start looking around at
 vintage gear.
I've kind of stagnated on a mid 90's Technics all-purpose
 AV receiver,
quite well spec'd and all, with either Bose Acoustimass
 speakers
and/or whatever is installed in the ceiling of our home.

I started out planning on giving him my early '80's
 Kenwood
30W/channel system, amp, tuner, EQ, and getting a mint
 Technics TT and
a better than average cartridge.  He would choose the
 loudspeakers.

Well I went a small bit crazy.  He also was interested
 in
reel-to-reel, something I always wanted, but I opted for
 cassette back
in earlier years for $ reason and because I could make a
 tape and play
it in the car. So I bought him a mint TEAC 3340S
 4-track.  My Kenwood
system, quite nice, but all I could afford at 21 yrs. old,
 does not
accomodate the necessary tape inputs/outputs, dubbing,
 etc., and has
no speaker A/B for a possible sub-woofer.  So onto
 look at more amps.

I bought him a nice used Denon 50W/channel receiver &
 perfect Pioneer
CD changer for $150.  Then I saw a Kenwood KA-3500
 40W/channel
integrated amp and got it for $31.  I subsequently saw
 a 65W/channel
late '70's Pioneer integrated amp & tuner in mint
 condition with the
silver fronts, wood sides, Blue Fluoro meters, and analog
 tuning for
$260 + shipping. He liked it the best out of the bunch, and
 we got it.

He had picked out some PSB (Canadian-made) speakers which
 are quite
good (also my pick of the affordable ones we demo'd) and
 which are due
to arrive.  Meanwhile I found a pair of mid '80's
 B&W English-made
speakers for $100 and bought them undemo'd on a whim.

I've sat here most of the day listening to some vintage
 LP'S (OK, 99%
Beatles with a little Nat King Cole, Chicago, Heart, Macca,
 and
classical thrown in).  This is with a $31 amp, a
 vintage turntable and
a cheap Audio-Technica cartridge, and a 25 year old pair of
 speakers.

I may never buy another CD again.  The amount of
 musical detail I can
hear and the dynamics of the music (can't describe it any
 better) are
just superb.  It sounds like real music and real
 voices.

Likely the Pioneer turntable/cartridge and JBL tower
 speakers I could
afford when I was much younger were not as good as what I'm
 listening
to at the moment.  Just the musicality of what I'm
 hearing on 20-30
year old gear and on equally old vinyl LP's is astounding
 (I purchased
 214, played only once LP's + a 50w/ch Technics receiver,
 cassette
deck, a 2nd pretty good TT, and speakers (worthless), for
 $250). It
was worth 2x-3x more than that for the LP's alone.
 What I'm hearing
is really better than what I hear on CD or iPod.

 Simply amazed... not over-imbibed

Their IP statement gives them specific rights to use your image in the
way that facebook works. the language from the "all your bases r
belong to us" ToS was scrapped but they still have default permissions
that allow things that most reasonable folks would not. thus the point
Ann (I have trouble not putting an e there) made about un-checking
everything.

what I do put up there is mostly useless by definition anyway.

always important to know what folks are doing though.

Wrong.

Facebook gets the right to use the image for promoting Facebook. And
only as long as you have the image *on* Facebook. As soon as you
remove it, they lose these rights. Pretty reasonable for a free
service.

A few months ago they tried to change their TOS to allow them to use
your image (including for purposes beyond promotion and advertising)
even after you took it down, but there was such an outcry that they
backed down very quickly. This incident is probably at the root of the
"you give up all rights" urban legend. Even that overzealous TOS
didn't make the photographer give up all rights (the photographer
could still copy, sell, modify, license the image).

Also, if your photos on Facebook have recognizable people in them,
Facebook would still have to get a model release. See the
Flickr/Virgin Mobile fiasco already mentioned in this thread :)

Indeed. I'd hope someone at the ad agency lost their job over that.

Just to complete the train wreck: The ad appeared only in Australia,
but the girl in the photo sued the *American* division of Virgin
Mobile, rather than the Australian corporation (which ran the ad) or
the parent corporation in Britain. AND they sued Creative Commons! The
U.S. branch of Virgin Mobile asked for dismissal for obvious reasons
and I think they got it. I know the suit against Creative Commons was
dropped when the plaintiff's attorney realized it was mind-bogglingly
stupid.

BTW: For those who want to really learn about this licensing business
I highly recommend a book I just picked up, "Getting Permission" by
Richard Stim (Nolo Press, ISBN 978-1-4133-0518-0). It's written by an
IP lawyer, but it's in clear, understandable English and covers
licensing of photographs, music, trademarks and more.

In order to solve the problem described below, I wonder if it is at all
possible to fire a flash at 1/1000 secs?

I have discovered, that if I fire the camera at 1/1000 secs a split second
after activating the RTF, it will actually fire, as long as the RFT is not
fully charged yet.

Is there a way to engage such a function - for instance in a mode designed for
strobo flash functions?

Actually, Peter.
This is a brilliant question. Now why didn't I think of that?
I made a small in-door test. It seems that it does not work below 1/160 sec.
But the software will tag the images same as previous ones, shot at above 1/160

So in practice this is not too much of a problem, if you know this in advance -
and if you remember to take a few shots above 1/160 every time you chang

The Photog in that case was mildly silly, the ad agency was just

RE: OT: Vinyl vs. Digital

2009-11-12 Thread Desjardins, Steve
I remember the time we borrowed a turntable to play some LPs for a music course
my wife was taking. My daughter was fascinated and thought we should get one.
This was also shortly after she had tried to shove an old 45 she found in a
kid's book into our CD player.

Well, this kind of reminds me of when I flew down to New York City for
the Cycle Messenger World Championships back in 2005. I didn't have a
passport, so crossed the border with my birth certificate and an
expired driver's license (as it had a photo and my birthdate on it).
With the "sketchy" ID I had, he asked the "usual questions". My only
checked luggage (which was next to me) was my bike in a proper
hardshell traveling case. He asked what was in the box.

He asked what type of bike I had. "Rossin trackbike," I replied.

He asked, "Is that titanium?"

"Nope, aluminium," was my prompt reply.

I later related that story to a friend, and he said, "Wow, the guy
knew that Rossin doesn't make a titanium frame? He must have been
trying to trip you up."

I explained to him that in fact he wasn't interested in my answer and
likely didn't know that Rossin only (at that time) only made steel and
aluminium frames. He was looking for my reaction, any hesitation on
my part, ~how~ I answered, not ~what~ I answered.

I'm guessing that Larry's cop was in the same situation.

I expect Larry's cop was doing what cops are supposed to do, checking up
on an apparently abandoned vehicle on the side of the road to:

a. see if someone was drunk and passed out
b. see if someone was broke down and needed help
c. see if someone abandoned a stolen car there
d. log it and put a sticker on it, so the next cop who came by would
know it had already been checked, and it could be towed if it sat there
long enough.

From Larry's story, the cop didn't see him taking pictures, Larry saw
the police car next to his car and walked down to talk to the cop. The
cop asked Larry what he was doing and Larry told him.

That's when the cop asked "But what are you taking pictures for?"

It's not an unreasonable question given the "time of day", location and
apparent subject matter - after midnight [?], taking photos of the power
grid out in the middle of nowhere.

Having determined Larry wasn't doing anything wrong, wasn't in trouble &
didn't need help, he left Larry to do his thing.

That was a different issue: The photographer himself put the photo on

Don't know which USB type turntable you saw but the general consensus
is they are basically junk. Sure they work but the cartridge/needles
are inferior and rumble, wow and flutter specs probably aren't even
listed... good for making an easy copy if not listening critically.

Re: RE: RE: RE: "The Tool" versus "The Toy" (K-x vs. K20)

2009-11-12 Thread Dragan Grašič

Jaume,
yes, the K-x AF-performance is a veritable step forward, now it works
flawless also in low light.
You should check if this AF-tweak is good enough to suit your particular
style of photography.

Concerning Hyperprogram, you can activate it in the Rec Menu 4/Green
Button then set up E-dial in P-mode either to Program shift (default) or
Av/Tv and off. You have to pick either one or the other because K-x has
just one E-dial.

Yes, status screen can be turned off by pressing Info button twice
(first klick: control panel, second klick: off), yet if doing so it
won't show you the review after shot. But if you want to change ISO and
press the dedicated button the status screen will go on again even if it
was turned off before. There is a way to work around this though, the
Sv-mode.

A word about shutter sound: this is unique by each Pentax camera I have
heard so far. K-x sounds less "motorized" and less damped as the K20
sound, somehow the subjective feeling upon the sound is as the exposure
time is being longer as it actually is. The camera is a bit louder than
K20, which makes it harder to use unnoticed in silent situations. But
outside in the crowd with a pancake lens, you will have no problems... :))

cheers,
dragan

I never gave up on my turntable, still have one here. It should need a
new needle, just need to figure out the model # etc and a place to
buy.

The Source sells a trun table that can DL the Vynal onto the computer
and or ipod. Might just get one. I'll have to see if having USB 1.1 is
a limiter. Lat i checked at the source is it does not work on a Mac,
or at least did not at the time. I have firewire and USB 2 on this.

RE: facebook totally strip metadata from uploaded pics

2009-11-12 Thread John Sessoms

From: Bran Everseeking

A friend twittered this and I found the facebook part to be true at
least.

http://www.pdnpulse.com/2009/11/warning-facebook-and-myspace-strip-photo-copyright-data.html

Goes back to earlier concerns regarding that "Orphaned Works" copyright
legislation.

Someone pulls your image off one of the sites without your permission,
someone else takes it from them ... and pretty soon anyone can take &
use your image for commercial purposes without compensating you.

It's already happened; some teenage girl's myspace photo ended up being
used by an Australian cell phone company for their ad campaign.

PESO: Downed Tree

2009-11-12 Thread John Sessoms
... or Hurricane Ida visits Raleigh, NC ... Tropical Storm Ida by the
time it got here I guess.

I was sitting at my desk reading PDML digests when I heard the tree
fall. I made sure it hadn't fallen on my house, and then went down the
street looking for it.

In the photo with the police car, you can see the driveway on the right.
That's the neighbor whose back yard is behind my backyard. The house
where the tree is located is in the next block down the street from my
house.

In the "Big Tree Stump" photo, you can see where the tree hit the roof
of the house when it broke off. The house has been empty for almost a
year now, the owner lives out of town and has been coming around on
weekends working on the house.

I had one window pane blown out by the storm, and I'll have to fix it
once the weather clears. Window's about 15' off the ground, so I'll have
to get a ladder out to remove the sash.

Sooner or later I've got to replace or rebuild all the window sashes in
this house, and I guess now is as good a time as any to get started on
that job. Rebuilding them costs less, and it's a job I know how to do
and have the tools for.

Nice to see they are still choosing police from the shallow end of the
gene pool.

Not fair. The guy was doing (to a large extent) his job and made the
decision that no further action was required upon investigation. His
personal interests are largely irrelevant. I am not sure I would have
stopped so quickly - let's face it, someone photographing power lines at
night _must_ be up to no good.

I was commenting on the cop's apparent lack of any creative efforts This is
a completely seperate issue from questioning people who are not engaged in
criminal activity.

There's not much colder than cold rain. Whenever people ask me what
the worst weather to cycle is, I unhesitatingly respond: "Under 5C
(about 40F?), heavy rain, wind."

Look forward to that PESO, once you've gotten the chill out of your bones.

The storm is apparently the remnant of Hurricane Ida. It seems kind of
late in the season for hurricanes. It hit here on Veteran's day when
most of the government - such as crews that clean up fallen trees out of
the street.

The first police officer who responded was a little bitty girl. I doubt
she weighed a hundred pounds soaking wet, which she was by the time
she left, but it was left to her and another officer (guy about 150 lb)
to do what they could to get that big branch out of the street, because
the one emergency road crew on duty yesterday had bigger issues to deal
with.

I'm having trouble getting the photos to upload to Flickr. I couldn't
get my first effort to upload at all, so I went back and redid the jpegs
in a smaller file size & Flickr is still stalling out during the upload.

I don't think it's Flickr's problem really, I think it's Time-Warner
Cable Road Runner. I've had problems with a lot of sites in the last few
months. Several times a day sites I regularly visit give messages "can't
find the server". And it's not confined to only one site.

So, it may be a while.

Using Facespace and Mybook for photo hosting is silly. People
uploading anything more serious than snapshots of their drunk friends
drinking drinks really need to find somewhere else to host their
photos. Picasa and Flickr are free, easier to use, and allow the
photographer to specify copyright. I'm not making excuses for the
abysmal behavior of Tom Anderson and Mark Zuckerberg, but calling
oneself a photographer and then telling all their friends to check out
their slammin' pics yo! on Facebook is, well, dumb.

Quite right. And however much I suspect the motives of anything
Facebook does, I'm pretty confident the stripping of metadata is
mainly to conserve storage space and bandwidth (the same reason
Photoshop's "Save for Web" module strips metadata).

Exactly. I strip metadata from every photo I show on the web,
primarily because I use PS "Save for Web." I show some photos on
Facebook, because I have a lot of friends there who want to see them.
They're lo-res pics that are useless for anything other than web
display, and anyone who might want one for a website wouldn't
purchase it anyway. However, I have sold some hi-res images because
the lo-res version was shown on the web. Facebook's policy isn't a
big deal. Like you, I don't like everything they do, but I enjoy
being able to connect with long-gone friends from all over the planet.

I never use "save for web" anymore.. because then I've lost info I need

I donated 6 photos of Scrabble players to Wikipedia entries about them

It occurs to me , however, that ebay may likewise strip the metadata
