Re: Wide angle for K-X?

2010-01-02 Thread Toine
If on a limited budget and lightweight the 16-45 is what you want. One
of my most used lenses.
Toine

2010/1/2 Sandy Harris sandyinch...@gmail.com:
I'm on a limited budget, looking for fairly lightweight travel
combination. I have a fairly strong bias toward primes, though just
getting the 16-50 as a single lens does tempt me some.

My last good camera (stolen some time back not yet replaced) was an
MX and on it, I used the 85/1.4 for at least 75% of shots and a 28 for
most others. I had the 40 mm pancake and a teleconverter, didn't use
either much. So this one will be a K-X with the 58/1.4 Voigtlander.
Comments on that choice appreciated too.

What I really want to know, though, is what can folks suggest as a
wide angle to go with that? Zeiss is beyond my budget and a 12-24 or
10-20 zoom too heavy. I need a good prime, around 24 mm, at a moderate
price. The Pentax 21/3.2 Limited and Sigma 24/1.8 are obvious
possibilities; either might suit but I'm not sure either is ideal for
 me.

What else should I be considering? Checking Pentax's site, I don't see
 a 24/2 or 24/2.8 among current offerings.

with the 21mm prime because I really wanted to go light in terms of weight
for the wide end and have a lens that wouldn't call attention to itself.  I
am a huge fan of the DA* 50-135mm--a superb lens--and I'm sure the DA*
16-50mm f 2.8 is equally superb, but in considering a wide lens for weight,
street work, and family snaps, (anything really--Ted has shot some beautiful
landscapes with the 21mm)  you just can't go wrong with 21mm.  Despite its
3.2 f-stop, it also performs well in challenging light situations.  I've put
together a gallery of 12 pics shot in different light situations. I didn't
use any flash for any of these pics.  The meta data is at the top, and a
very brief description of the lighting situation is at the bottom.

All of these pics have had some tweaking in post-processing, but nothing
extensive--I might have lightened up darks or shadows a twinge or bumped up
the lights or increased exposure by +19 or 29---very quick tweaking done in
a matter of seconds.  If I could only take two lenses while traveling, I
would take DA 21mm the DA* 50-135mmand, well, I'd probably have to
sneak the FA 50 mm f1.4 in my brazier--that's great lens too in my view--I'm
kind of partial to that lens as well  :-).

Here it was 30 celsius by 10am today, and got up to 33 before the wind changed.
I was hoping for a repeat of the 38 we had about this time last year.

I can't even comprehend what -36 would feel like. I think -11 is about the
coldest weather I've experienced.

Nice collection Christine! I particularly like the last shot, of Darrel.
And I agree with you about the 21mm. I have been surprised by how much I have
used mine. In my film days I seldom used my 30mm or 31mm (approximately the
same FOV), but the 21mm has been one that is always carried and frequently
used. I also have the 14/2.8 and the 15/4.0 lenses. The bulk of the 14mm is
offputting for me, but the 15mm is another winner in a class with the 21mm. The
14mm is in my small stack of items I have decided to sell one of these days
when I get around to it...

with the 21mm prime because I really wanted to go light in terms of weight
for the wide end and have a lens that wouldn't call attention to itself. I
am a huge fan of the DA* 50-135mm--a superb lens--and I'm sure the DA*
16-50mm f 2.8 is equally superb, but in considering a wide lens for weight,
street work, and family snaps, (anything really--Ted has shot some beautiful
landscapes with the 21mm) you just can't go wrong with 21mm. Despite its
3.2 f-stop, it also performs well in challenging light situations. I've put
together a gallery of 12 pics shot in different light situations. I didn't
use any flash for any of these pics. The meta data is at the top, and a very
brief description of the lighting situation is at the bottom.

All of these pics have had some tweaking in post-processing, but nothing
extensive--I might have lightened up darks or shadows a twinge or bumped up
the lights or increased exposure by +19 or 29---very quick tweaking done in a
matter of seconds. If I could only take two lenses while traveling, I would
take DA 21mm the DA* 50-135mmand, well, I'd probably have to sneak the
FA 50 mm f1.4 in my brazier--that's great lens too in my view--I'm kind of
partial to that lens as well :-).

Actually this thread has reminded me that I once filmed inside a series
of deep freezes - a collection of rooms within rooms, varying in
temperature in the first room at -5c, through to -15c in the second
room, and finally through to -25c.

Even with winter jackets on, we could only be in the final room for
about 5 minutes - the camera was not set up for such conditions and
plastic cabling will do funny things in such cold. Even in 5 minutes the
zoom remote on the pan bar was frozen solid and it became painful to
actually breathe so the [food company manager] brought us out.

It was very quickly gave me a lot of respect for people that live in
cold conditions.

My guess is Sony's objective is to be one of the major players.

For example, almost every camera store carries N C, but not all
have Pentax or Olympus. I've seen online advice that some buyers
should consider only N or C because they have the broadest range
of lenses and you can rent lenses for them easily. I'm not sure that

Sony want to be a major brand in DSLRs, competing with N C.

That objective has to be rated succeeded in the UK. _The_ major photo
chain now stocks CNS, with S given equal prominence to the others. NO
Pentax, which has been relegated to one of the major box shifters, and
precious little else.

Hm, 16 + 45 / 2 = 30.5. I guess that's why I love the 31mm Limited ;-)

Making Nikon help pay for it is just icing from Sony's point of view.

My guess is Sony's objective is to be one of the major players.

For example, almost every camera store carries N C, but not all
have Pentax or Olympus. I've seen online advice that some buyers
should consider only N or C because they have the broadest range
of lenses and you can rent lenses for them easily. I'm not sure that
is correct and it is irrelevant to me anyway, but it is out there.

Sony want to be a major brand in DSLRs, competing with N C.

I was in one of the few remaining Wolf (Ritz) Camera stores the other
day. It's between the library and the 10,000 Villages store where I
found a Christmas present for my niece, so I wandered in for a moment to
browse.

They had a fair stock of Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Sony DSLRs plus
lenses NCOS + Tokina Quanteray.

Pentax was notably absent from the offerings, and Wolf used to be the
only chain camera store that carried them.

Took a quick look at the Wolf Camera website just now and they offer the
K7, K200 and K2000 online ... Usually ships in 1-2 business days
(Canon, Nikon Sony ship within 24 hours except for the A850 which is
still on order).

Supposedly Walmart stocks Pentax, but I've yet to see one, and that was
my only reason for going in there. And a quick check of th Walmart
website shows that all Pentax cameras are ! Not Sold In Stores

The local CompUSA store (owned by Tiger Direct) had the white K-x in
stock a month ago.

Re: Wide angle for K-X?

2010-01-02 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Sandy,

It would help to indicate realistically how much you are willing to
spend. There are quite a few options that have a wide range of
price. Also, since you are talking about an APS-C format, how wide
are you really thinking? 28mm for full frame is not really very
wide, just starting to get wide. For APS-C that is about an 18mm
lens. So it you really want wide, you are looking at the 14/2.8,
18-55, 16-45 and 16-50 for current lenses.

More info would help us give more useful opinions.

SH MX and on it, I used the 85/1.4 for at least 75% of shots and a 28 for
SH most others. I had the 40 mm pancake and a teleconverter, didn't use
SH either much. So this one will be a K-X with the 58/1.4 Voigtlander.
SH Comments on that choice appreciated too.

SH What I really want to know, though, is what can folks suggest as a
SH wide angle to go with that? Zeiss is beyond my budget and a 12-24 or
SH 10-20 zoom too heavy. I need a good prime, around 24 mm, at a moderate
SH price. The Pentax 21/3.2 Limited and Sigma 24/1.8 are obvious
SH possibilities; either might suit but I'm not sure either is ideal for

SH What else should I be considering? Checking Pentax's site, I don't see
SH a 24/2 or 24/2.8 among current offerings.

It's just a little below freezing here in Boston: 28F
I ran 13 miles this morning and it was pretty miserable because of the
snow and (mostly) slush underfoot. I'd much rather run in colder

Right at freezing in Raleigh, NC 31.8F (according to Weather Underground).

I don't run if I can help it. I figure you're only alloted so many miles
I want to save what I have left in case I really need them someday.

But, I went for a walk yesterday with the idea of shooting some film.
Overdid it a bit, 4-1/2 hours I'm pretty stiff today.

Didn't find a whole lot I wanted to shoot, so I still had 8 (of 36)

PESO High Voltage Headshot

2010-01-02 Thread eckinator
Just an old warning sign I saw at La Granja manor (south of
Valldemossa, Mallorca, Spain) and found kinda fun.

La Granja is a medieval manor now converted into a museum based on its
own history; well worth a visit if you are in the area. Friends own a
small apartment on a hilltop overlooking Puerto de Andratx which has a
fabulous view but is in somewhat poor repair so they rent it out for
15 to 25 € a night which is next to nothing by any standard. Thus, I
will definitely be going there again some day.

Well, its about 22 degrees colder than it was New Years day, so what
better time to make a Geso of the walk in the snow yesterday.

It's warmed up here a bit since yesterday.

Actually this thread has reminded me that I once filmed inside a series
of deep freezes - a collection of rooms within rooms, varying in
temperature in the first room at -5c, through to -15c in the second

Even with winter jackets on, we could only be in the final room for
about 5 minutes - the camera was not set up for such conditions and
plastic cabling will do funny things in such cold. Even in 5 minutes the
zoom remote on the pan bar was frozen solid and it became painful to
actually breathe so the [food company manager] brought us out.

It was very quickly gave me a lot of respect for people that live in
 cold conditions.

Friend of mine who lived in the UK for a number of years opines that no
one in Canada really understands rain and no one in the UK really
understands cold. There might be some truth to this.

I've found the K20D works fine at -25 C if you don't bring it inside too
fast.

Nice shot. I like both one and three. The bush adds balance in one and gives
the statues a sense of place. But the tight crop on three locks in on your
subject and is attractive and interesting as well. Two is neither fish nor fowl
IMO, so it is the least desirable.

Thank you Paul for your input - can't make up my mind which one gives
a stronger sense of distance - 1 and 3 are similar to me in terms of
effect whereas 2 was an attempt to give the female a more dominant,
self-centered place in the image; sky is a tad too dark though which
doesn't really add to the image

Thanks, Scott! PUG looks great. Paul's CD cover is a dandy, as is Ann's
Paris Cops. Love Dario's Moving to the future--wonderfully layered in
meaning. Love the expression on John Celio's lab friend--subject really
fits the theme. Dan's landscape is wonderfully vibrant, and Rick's orange
is very clever! Fun to see Frank Pat's old film cameras. Mark did a
great job on evoking the moody broody, and good to see Dave still has his
hand in medium format, which resulted in a nice tractor shot. Brian brought
a true splash of color to Artist's Studio, really nice there. Joseph proves
himself daring in posting a goose in silhouette ;-), Toralf's macro is
fun confetti crazy ;-).

Thanks to everyone for their kind comments on Carolyn! Cheers, Christine
