Re: OT - concert photography

2010-03-18 Thread Dario Bonazza
Got and read the book. I like the pictures in it and I appreciate the tips
and advice on how to access the venue, manage the shooting and the like.
What I find odd is that all pictures show conditions of very bright stage
lighting, allowing shutter speeds around 1/250-1/500 f/2.8 @ ISO 1600.
That's possible and very welcome, but also rather unusual in most concert
shooting, where 1/30-1/60 f/2.8 ISO 3200 is the average exposure condition,
while other situations require even slower shutter speeds or higher ISO
settings at f/2.8.

I'd like to see how the author manages such conditions.

Just doing some research and stumbled across this book about concert

lighting etc

Re: Chicago Exhibit

2010-03-18 Thread Christian Skofteland
My new job has me traveling quite a bit in the next few months... 3
weeks in Miami, 2 weeks in NY, 2 weeks in Paris and 2 weeks in Chicago
at the end of June. Unfortunately it looks like I'm going to miss out
completely on the gallery exhibit. Too bad my Chicago trip is at the
wrong time... :-(

Christian.

Ok, I'd like to hear some chatter about the Chicago Exhibit.

1) Who's coming?
2) Do you want to do a group photo-walk on Sat or Sun or neither?
3) Do you want to do a group dinner Sat night at some place cheap and
cheerful?

Friday, May 7th will be the opening reception from 6-9 pm. The
gallery is on the 4th floor of Dank Haus. On the 6th floor there is a
bar called the Skyline Lounge, which has an excellent terrace offering
a nice roof top view of the city. Sue said the bar might have free
jazz that night. So that could be fun, but if we don't want to stay
there, there are lots of nice bars within a short walking distance
from Dank Haus.

What do you'all think? Let's get the chatter going on this.
Cheers, Christine

PESO: Roman Roof Tiles Revisited

2010-03-18 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
The colors and textures of these roof tiles at the Castel Sant'Angelo
in Rome caught my attention. I have cropped the image slightly to
remove the distraction in the upper right corner, as suggested by Jack
Davis:

Comments, suggestions and criticisms will be greatly appreciated.

Just last weekend, I shot a show with the K10D fixed at ISO 1250 (the edge of
usability) and speeds of 1/10-1/40. 1/500 is a shutter speed I've only ever
gotten on nice BIG stages. Nice, but unusual/atypical!

Lynn and I will be there. I'll drive the van so I can do some
shlepping of folks.
Lynn probably won't photo walk, but definitely see the opening.

> 2)  Do you want to do a group photo-walk on Sat or Sun or neither?

Either day is fine, perhaps one day for the full group and the other
for smaller groups.
If the weather is good, there is nothing more glorious than a tour on an old red
London double-decker bus.

> 3) Do you want to do a group dinner Sat night at some place cheap and
> cheerful?

Yes, you pick the place or make some suggestions. Do we have 5 or 25 folks?

As to hotels, Lynn and I will do some looking. Anywhere west of Michigan Ave
will be a bit cheaper. And north of the river and south of Chicago
Ave. is good.
I might try Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites, Comfort Inn, or Hilton Garden Inn.
These are all along Ohio Street, west of Navy Pier and South of the
galleries you
talked about. See what kind of deals you can get. Everybody at 1 or
2 places would
make transit a bit easier. This whole area is relatively safe and secure.

I used them to scan hundreds of slides. I have never manually scanned
any slides, so I don't have any way to compare the results. Here is a
gallery of some of the scans:

(my smugmug site) ... http://tinyurl.com/ycpdsza

Pro:
One great thing about scancafe is the ability to only pick and pay for
1/2 of the images that they scan.
To spell it out clearly, you can send them 1000 slides and then only
have to pay for your favorite 500.

Pro:
They offer a service of retouching your damaged image(s). If I recall
correctly, I think it cost a dollar or 2 for this touchup. Here are
3 of the same picture retouched:
 1. the diry original
http://tinyurl.com/yzlqyjl
 2. the small preview of the retouch http://tinyurl.com/yka95yt
 3. the full size final
http://tinyurl.com/ybs27n3

Con:
Their website for browsing and picking your scans was mildly slow and annoying.

EXHIBIT box, but would still like to know if those considered worthy of exhibit
have been chosen.
If you would, I'd appreciate your checking to see if I did check the "OK to
exhibit" box..or whatever the heading.

Thanks,

Jack

You did indeed check the box for the exhibit.
Sue Barton has only picked about half the photos for the exhibit. (I'm
notifying people individually.) She promised the rest "tomorrow
morning". And that was on Tuesday. I sent her a reminder yesterday
evening. I'll send another in a few minutes.

Re: OT: PESO Sami in Karate class and a few other Things that probably interest no one in the world but me...

On Mar 17, 2010, at 10:26 PM, Sandra Hermann wrote:

First the Peso: http://samsphotopage.blogspot.com/2010/03/karate-class.html

I did my first firmware upgrade ever today. I had no idea how to do
them and was petrified of the whole process. Now my k10d finally
has the latest update. The reason for this update is the fact that
I am shooting a wedding Sat and I want to use my flash off camera.
Now to figure that part out. I hate shooting weddings. I can't mess
up, I don't like that kind of pressure.

I wouldn't mind being "the second photographer" at a wedding. I
wouldn't want to be THE photographer.

I also was curious how I could take better pictures of the kids in
the Karate class if I don't have a fast enough lens and I don't have
the money to buy a better one. I thought I was doing alright buying
stuff while I had a job, but I was buying more for nature
photography and now every one wants action photo's from me. Wrong
stuff.

Judging by the karate classes I've taken, they're halfway between
blues dancing and Aikido. You don't have a lot of bodies flying
through the air and the subjects stay pretty much in place when doing
drills and kata. Some things I've learned from shooting dance and
martial arts.

Your cheapest fast glass is going to be a 50/1.4 supertak with an
adapter. If you play your craigslist cards right, you can get the
glass for free, or with an old spotty for $50. M42 adapters are about
$20. The problem with using the old lenses is that they get you
spoiled for build quality.
In this case the lack of an automatic stopdown isn't going to be an
issue, because you'll be shooting wide open, or close to it, anyways.

At my dojo, I find that 50mm is a reasonable length to work with.

It's manual focus, so I recommend refocusing a lot. That way if you're
off, you'll only be off for a few shots. A katzeye could help here.

Another low budget (as in cheaper than a new lens) thing that'll help
is a monopod.

http://www.linkdelight.com/index.php/Tripods-Heads/Benro-8x-Carbon-Fiber-MC-66n6-5-sections-Monopod/Detailed-product-flyer.html
is a sweet deal, I use it with a manfrotto ball head.

Try higher ISOs. I'm almost always shooting stationary objects at
base ISO, but for dance or marital arts, I'll push the ISO pretty
hard. High ISO noise will often look better in black and white.

I need to get off my butt and finish working on this project, but
here's something I'm writing about shooting action in low light:

http://red4est.com/lrc/photowriting/

specifically:
http://red4est.com/lrc/photowriting/photoing_blues.txt
http://red4est.com/lrc/photowriting/blues_photo_equip.txt
http://red4est.com/lrc/photowriting/photoing_blues_notes.txt

I got a 2x converter last month. I found eagles so I had to have it
to take pictures of them. I still wasn't close enough. But next
year I will figure out a better plan.

Boris, your B-1 is a business visa, so you don't need another visa.

People coming to the US on a leisure visit used to be able to just
show up at US immigration and enter the country thanks to the Visa
Waiver Program, an agreement between the US and several other
"friendly" countries whereby visitors automatically received a tourist
visa valid for 3 months. But now, in order to obtain said visa, you
have to request it online prior to travel, like Jostein said.

Also make sure you bring all 10 fingers as they will be scanned by immigration.

Cheers,

If I get an image selected for the exhibit I will try my hardest to

Hi,

you may take a look at the photos I uploaded to different server:
http://nagi.ee/photos/haramount/sets/256079/?picture_type=t&start=0

Don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining and I really do like I-10. In
my opinion, it is one of the few (if not the only) compacts that look
like a camera, not a soapbox. Just when you take it to you hand together
with Auto 110, it feels pretty much different from Auto 110. As I said,
they are similar, but not THAT similar :)

I agree with Boris. You've got some great work. Sometimes the symmetry

Christine already knows this - Karin and I are coming. Photowalk Sat or Sun

half decent PDML gathering.

On the recommendation of a work colleague, we'll be staying at the Whitehall

Looking forward to seeing you and putting faces to names. Fingers still
crossed that I get in the exhibition (but it'll be a great trip anyway!)...

Re: Tamrac Summit - opinions sought [Scanned]

2010-03-18 Thread eckinator
Hi John
Dunno about the Tamrac as I haven't tried it but the outer cover of
the LowePro DryZone 200 tends to balloon at higher speeds so it was no
joy to ride with. The tripod fitting of the DryZones is IMHO superior
to the Summit's as the tripod is attached farther down and there is
less risk of neck injury in a crash situation. Personally, I would not
carry the tripod while riding but attach it to the frame somewhere or
put it in a waterproof roller bag to go across the bike atop the
panniers/rack. For offbike, either attachment is fine. There is also
the ortlieb backpacks but they have no dedicated photo interior.

film/slide digital conversion: dynamic range question

2010-03-18 Thread Larry Colen
I know that when it comes to exposure, film has a much higher dynamic
range than does digital.

What about the dynamic range of the image on the processed film? I know
that there's some roll off, so that if film can record 9 stops of range,
(numbers POA*) it might only be represented with 7 stops of dynamic
range. Does anyone know off hand what the real values are for these
numbers?

What about scanners and digital cameras? Do scanners have more dynamic
range than your standard APS camera?

If the image on film has more dynamic range than that on the camera,
could you recover more of that data with bracketing and HDR processing?
How many stops of bracketing would you need?

Re: Tamrac Summit - opinions sought [Scanned]

2010-03-18 Thread Larry Colen
I know that you said you don't need the laptop pocket in your gear bag,
but I've found that when I'm not carrying a computer that pocket is very
handy for carrying things like grey cards, flash modifiers/diffusers,
the Itoya 9x12 photo albums, or basically anything fairly large and
flat.. It's also a great place for my monopod without the head on it.

I'm starting to do another look at something to carry lenses and such
that I don't want/need in my pack at the moment. I've run across a
couple mentions of the pelican 1550, which seems to have configurable
dividers. There also seems to be a (Lowepro?) softcase that the Pelican
case will fit into. This seems to be a pretty good compromise on
protection, size, capacity and price. Anybody have comments or
experience with the setup?

My guess is that it's some sort of frequency response issue. Something
is charging up the cells on the sensor and reading them isn't
discharging them maybe?

my readings on HDR from raw indicate that the two stop advantage of
raw is a theoretical value with 1.25 give or take 0.25 stops as a real
