Unless of course they deliver something finer, then maybe we can have

Re: equipment issues this week

I have a small imperfection in my K20D's LCD, it was annoying me. I
feel much better about it now.

I don't think I mentioned that on Monday I went to a dance in the city. when I

As far as I can tell, the only thing that they took was the fannypack that I
had picked up in Chicago, after a fair bit of searching around for just this
pack. Of course it also had my Raynox, some hybrid AAs, spare battery for my
phone, checkbook and probably a couple other things in it. I'm guessing that
it was about a $200 hit.

I think that what happened was that when I closed the trunk there was something
in the way of the latch and the trunk didn't latch. The good news is that they
didn't get the carbon fiber tripod. The better news is that before I went up to
the city I took the bag of lenses I don't use that often and the tammy 300/2.8
out of the trunk. So it could have been a lot worse.

Last night, when I got home from photographing some friends play at JJ's, I
noticed that the LCD on top of my K20 had taken a hit:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157624073414869/

Maybe, if and when, I upgrade I'll send it in. But as long as it works, and it
has the plastic scratch protector on it to keep water out, it's not worth the
money, or being without my camera for a month. I have no idea how it happened.
I didn't drop the camera or bash it with anything.

using a "regular" 50mm might work, but not as well
as a dedicated macro bellows lens will work. Another
low cost but high performance solution is to use a enlarging lens via
adapter. Those are similar to a macro bellows lens.

I haven't tried that particular one, but I've used bellows before.
Note you
can use a regular 50mm on it, no need for a macro lens as the Bellows
will
provide plenty of extension (my current bellows gets 2:1 magnification

a 50mm lens).

RE: Early 1900s in Colour

2010-06-04 Thread John Coyle
Mike appears to be correct in identifying it as a Farman, but there are some
significant differences: there are, for example, three wing strut pairs in
the Kahn photo against four in the Farman Shorthorn: however, since many of
these planes were basically hand-built, I would expect variations to occur
as the designers (and the pilots!) gained more experience of practical
configurations. The machine gun mounting in the nose is probably a late
modification, perhaps made in the field, as there is no such mounting in the
Farman illustration. From further research into Caudron models, it is
unlikely that it was built by that company, as all their models for which I
can find illustrations had puller airscrews rather than pushers.

I'm fairly sure now that it's some variation of a Farman Shorthorn.
http://www.aviastar.org/air/france/farman_mf-11.php

You can see that the tail fin is likely to be one half of a pair. I
suspect it has been front-line modified into a bomber and the
apparatus on the left side of the nose is some form of bomb-aiming
device. Hence the bombs on the ground in front of it. The design of
this particular machine does not, to my eye, encourage the throwing of
ordnance. Too much stuff for it to hit/catch on before it is clear.

I assumed the round thing was a Lewis gun magazine but now I'm not so sure.

Before assigning that title I checked with Google and found the correct
spelling to be as shown. I, just now, checked "Bridalveil" with Google and
found that to be even more correct.;) Tie was broken with a park map, as well

It pleases me, however, that you couldn't find anything wrong with the image.

Trying my luck again now that the Euro is down to US$ 1.20 from almost
1.40. Still on reduced sick pay so I need to let a lot of stuff go.
Some of this was part of other purchases that just sort of collected
over time.

Pentax smc-DFA 50/2.8 complete package, hardly used (optioned). Having
a DA* 16-50 and also a DFA 100, the DFA 50 tends to get overlooked
when I pack my bag so it has to go.

Pentax Refconverter M

Cullmann 3335 tripod with upside-down center column, 3 way head and
detachable macro arm, proprietary quick release, complete set of
accessories

Cullmann Titan CT 77 low profile macro/adjustment rail, rather
underrated product

Tiltall tripod, post-Marchioni, post-Leitz, probably Star-D, like new
in box, was my standard tripod till I got the Quadropod, supports
fairly heavy kits, one leg doubles as a monopod, and upside down
center column replaceable with Gitzo and identical diameters, fixed 3
way head but it should come off with some force and fancy language.

Emo Wetzlar Quattro Axial (locking axis, supports upside down use) and
Quickmaster (qr uses proprietary, arca-shaped but smaller plate)
tripod heads, ideal for viewfinder and EVIL cameras and lighter kits
plus one qr base and plate, qr plate size ideal for P&S, EVIL and
rangefinder cameras

Old school ROWI hot shoe mount infrared remote release, sync cable
looks like Nikon but have to check. You can basically have it for free

Canon viewfinder magnifier S, fits most rectangular eyepieces but not
Pentax, maybe with some modification, haven't tried

Also, Canon FD stuff, anyone?

Novoflex K mount auto bellows BALPENT-AS, 2 minor paint chips, soft drive action
or
Novoflex K mount auto bellows BALPENT-AS, 1 minor paint chip, tight
drive action (means lubrication is no longer as good but also means
you no longer have to mind locking the drive before pointing the
camera downwards so there is also an advantage and it is cheaper, too)
for both
matching Auto Bellows Macro Noflexar 60/4 APENT-60, dust and fungus
free, aperture not sticky or oily
matching Auto Bellows Macro Noflexar 105/4 APENT-105, fungus free,
aperture not sticky or oily but some dust, doesn't hurt pictures
also
Novoflex auto bellows for Minolta MC/MD mount, exc in box

for all the above
matching sun shade bellows BALSON-AK
matching slide copier attachment BALCOP-K
matching 49 mm M-Ring adaptor
matching 52 mm M-Ring adaptor
matching Novoflex CASTEL-K adjustment rail exc. used
all no box except the lens, whole kit in great condition

Novoflex Auto Duo Flash with TTL adaptor for analog Pentax bodies plus
one for analog and older digital Nikons, generally good condition with
two minor exceptions: under serial shooting left flash head will stop
firing after 3 or 4 shots, all it needs to resume is a small break,
maybe a capacitor getting old, also one case seam widened, seems it
took some heat or pressure maybe

Novoflex MC-Vertikal L bracket for MiniConnect quick release system,
comes with two MC plates, plus one extra MC plate sold separately

Novoflex PentPro adaptor to connect Pentax 6x7 camera to Novoflex
Balpro and Balpro T/S bellows

Finally, tons of filters and step up and step down rings, too much to
list, let me know what you need.

shipping at cost, trackable, insured. Payment up front BIC/IBAN.
DHL unless carrier indicated. Favorable rates via my workplace

so why are you getting the message? it might have to do with how La Cie

Flat field of focus to be exact, which is a common design feature of
macro lenses, not specific to bellows macros. What's unique about
bellows macros is that they are short barrel lenses and require a
bellows to hit infinity in most configurations.

Pentax made one, Nikon made a couple and Olympus made about 4,
including a 20mm f2.

What you really want is a lens optimized to have a flat depth of field.
Pentax made one - a 100mm for a screw mount.

Macro lenses are better for this use as JCO notes, and enlarging

Macro bellows: fifty bucks!

2010-06-04 Thread Bruce Walker

Just had to share this apparent gem.

Kirk Tuck in his blog points out a great macro bellows deal, a Fotodiox
for $49.95 US at Amazon.

He has tested it (on Canon) and found it to be as advertised, tough and
accurate.

Kirk's blog entry: http://is.gd/cCu8R

A link to the Pentax flavour of it at Amazon.com is:
http://is.gd/cCuc9

I think even I can afford this! The only showstopper for me is that my
only macro lens is a DA Ltd and as such has no aperture ring. I'd have
to try the reversing ring trick with my old SMC 50mm or rummage around
for a deal on an old macro.

Has anyone here tried one out by any chance?

Did not. Compare for yourself how the heads are turned:
theirs:

Besides you didn't tell them not to steal it so there is no way they
could have done so =P *duck&run*

Any, yours is a great photo, too =)

I like the symmetry too. Did you open the phone books or were they like that
when you found them?

HA! some a-hole stole my peacock photo:
http://birdofthemoment.blogspot.com/2009/12/peacock.html
or full size:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bNuA-oAASYY/SzlkoQxQW3I/AWU/6m3WUedlptI/s1600-h/peacock_IMG_5000.jpg

The others are pretty good but there are a lot of studio shots and some serious
color enhancement going on.

You can do a screen shot, a window shot, or a selected area shot of any
proportion or size with a Mac, either through keyboard shortcuts, or
using the "included with the O/S" little program called "Grab". Can't
show you here, because this list has never gotten past the DOS 6.2.2 era.
:-)

Can't you post a screenshot with a Mac? I was doing that as far back as
Win98

I've never had a book refuse to open because I've read it too many times.

I'm sure Kindle will change all that...
