Causse celeb

2010-07-03 Thread Bob W
M. Christian Avesque is the last paid shepherd on the Causse Mejean. He is
the subject of a recently-published book called Un Dernier Berger, which I
bought as a souvenir of my trip to the causse: <
http://www.amazon.fr/Un-dernier-berger-Renaud-Dengreville/dp/2812600403 >.
It's a beautiful book with superb photos which really capture the place -
worth having a look at if you ever get the chance.

I saw M. Avesque when I cycled on to the causse to visit the herd of
Przewalski's horses that they have up there, but he was talking to a group
of other tourists so I didn't want to stop and bother him a second time, and
only took this snap and one or two variants. Interesting chap though,
according to the book. Apart from an engineering course in a nearby town,
and a spell in Algeria on military service during the war there, he seems to
have been up there with his (or rather, not his) sheep all his life.

Not a bad shot considering the equipment limitations that you're facing.

If you had a K-x, you realize you wouldn't need to use strobes to have enough
light to get the shot.

Seriously though, I can't find a single nit to pick. Awesome shot. Just for

GESO burner party

It's a long story but by parking in front of someone's garage, and not being an
asshole when he asked me to move my car, I made a new friend that invited me to
a party he was having. I didn't know anyone there, and it's not my normal
crowd, but since other people were taking pictures, I pulled out the little
storm trooper, the 50/1.4 and the 31 and had some fun taking pictures of
interesting people having fun.

It was an interesting challenge shooting in a new environment. I think that

In this case, I believe the IR unit usually (so to speak) seen between the
lens and the Nocta body has been replaced by a simple barrel, in order to
keep the register distance.

See this picture I've just uploaded:

Hmm, sure that lens comes from a Nocta IR camera. About its rear barrel, I'm
going to ask a friend which owns a Nocta unit (camera+lens).

Whew! It took some googling but I finally tracked this one down. It
looks like the lens from a Pentax Nocta from 1966, which is part-way
down this page:

http://www.aohc.it/oddse1.htm

Any comments, Dario?

As rare as it must be, the starting price on this auction looks
ludicrously high.Terms such as "IR focusing system" and "image
intensifier" came up in references to this lens. It seems like that
function of the lens has gone out-of-service and has been replaced
with a simple mounting tube which looks unoriginal and most
un-Asahi-like in its style and finish.

Strange, never seen, unknow: NC (?) Takumar 1:3.3 (?) 300 mm
It has been changed, but the ring marking seems real...

Hi there,

I can use an 8gb SanDisk Extreme III in my *ist DL with no trouble.
Not that you'd want to use a card that large as you probably don't

Re: Thoughts on Trailing Curtain Sync

2010-07-03 Thread Jos from Holland
John, maybe it tells the flash digitally through the communication line
that it has to use the trailling edge of the triggerpuls of the camera
for triggering the flash (that would be the same principle as on the Z-1)

If it works like that, your adapter board will be very simple :-)

Obviously, if the AF-540FGZ can do trailing curtain sync when mounted
on the shoe, some information is being communicated through one of the
contacts that tells the flash when the trailing curtain begins to
close. How is the information formatted and what connector does it
come through? If I knew that, I might be able to bread-board my own
adapter.

The Nocta is described pretty well in Oosten's "The Ultimate Asahi Pentax Screw
Mount Guide 1952-1977," pgs 255-256. From the three pictures in this book, it
appears as though the eBay lens is complete minus the larger focusing handle. A
rare unit indeed.

The description of lens from the book:

"The lens is a highly specialized Takumar 1:3.3/300mm for Infrared photography.
The minimum aperture is f/22, the angle of view is 8 degrees. It was supplied
with a 256X Neutral Density filter (42mm) for use under daylight conditions.
The actual front of the lens measures 300/3.3 = 91mm in diameter of which only
the central part is used in daylight." - pg 255.

Frank,
Unusual for me to see them flying, very elegant compared to the geese.
Most around here are wing clipped to keep them on guard duty against
the Canada Geese.

that's a great shot! I watched American Graffiti again on Thursday evening,

Sun-drenched shutters

2010-07-03 Thread Bob W
I have put together a gallery of snaps from Florac, including a few pictures
from some of the nearby hamlets. It's a very quiet village at this time of
year, waiting for the tourist season to begin, so not much to photograph
other than shutters! Still, easy to see why the great painters were so
attracted to the south.

The graffiti in one of them ('Pour qui trimes-tu?') means 'Who are you
busting a gut for?'.

Over the next day or two I'll put together a gallery of shots from the
causse and other hill walks that I did.

Hope you enjoy - comments welcome.

I've found it most effective for my taste at 1/15th second,

some sort.

Start here, and click through about 8 snaps:

Thanks for the photos ... good stuff!

The trigger lead time is shorter than I wrote. A 125 second flash burn
is 8 ms and that's a long burn; they probably do trigger with 30 ms
lead, not 300. :-)

During my holiday in France I took a number of pictures with a view to
stitching them into panoramas, it being a big country over there. Here's my
first attempt at one, using Hugin. It shows the Causse Mejan towering over
Florac, the village I stayed in.

The village is at the crossroads of several rivers: the Tarn, Tarnon,
Mimente, Pecher, possibly others - there are a lot of them! A 'causse' is a
limestone plateau, like The Lost World. There are several causses separated
by deep gorges such as the Gorge du Tarn. Florac is at about 500m altitude.
The Causse Mejan ranges from about 800m to 1240m at it's highest peak. What
you see here goes up to about 1000m. I can't wait to see the Himalayas!

OK. With KX and AF280T, it's no go. Trailing curtain seems to be a
PTTL-only mode, as the RTF preflashes. Some illogicality there..
There is no trailing curtain mode on the DL2.

>

The non-dedicated flash fires when the main hot-shoe contact triggers.
I'm asking how the camera controls when that main hot-shoe contact
triggers. Could a camera software change make it trigger the main
hot-shoe/PC contact on the trailing curtain when the on-board flash is
set to trailing curtain? Or would it require physical changes to the
wiring inside the camera?

The K10 and the K20 allow you to set the on-board flash to
trailing-curtain. The AF-500 (which worked with the *ist-D) and the
AF-540FGZ have trailing curtain sync built into the flash.

On the K10 and the K20, with the on-board flash set to trailing curtain,
the main hot-shoe pin triggers on the front curtain. Same for the K20's
PC sync.

Is this main pin trigger on front curtain hard-wired into the camera, or
is this something that could be changed by a firm-ware update?

Of course you can shoot trailing curtain synch at low shutter speeds on either
the K10 or the K20. I get good results shooting trailing synch on the K10, K20
and K7 at 1/8th or 1/15th.
Paul

But you can only do so with the on-board flash or a dedicated Pentax
flash like the AF-540FGZ.

The regular hot-shoe contact (or the PC contact on the K20) ONLY sync
with the front curtain. The trailing curtain sync does not work with the
AF-540FGZ in wireless mode, you have to use the Hot-shoe Adapter F and
F5P cable to get it use trailing curtain sync off camera.

I was wondering whether the main contact tripping only on the front
curtain is hard-wired into the cameras or is it something Pentax could
change in the firm-ware? Could Pentax tell the camera when the on-board
flash mode is set for trailing curtain, trip the hot-shoe/PC contact
with the trailing curtain as well, or would it require a physical change
to the wiring inside the camera?

It would be useful to have the camera trigger the hot-shoe/PC on the
rear curtain so I could use trailing curtain sync with pocket wizard
type radio slaves.

Obviously, if the AF-540FGZ can do trailing curtain sync when mounted on
the shoe, some information is being communicated through one of the
contacts that tells the flash when the trailing curtain begins to close.

How is the information formatted and what connector does it come
through? If I knew that, I might be able to bread-board my own adapter.

Are you sure about that? Compare the pictures at AOHC:

to the picture at the auction:

http://i.ebayimg.com/11/!Bw0VCdQBGk~$(KGrHqIOKioEwPgB+i)hBMKt40,WIw~~_12.JPG

You can see that the historic pictures show a much shorter tube
between the wide part of the lens and the body of the image
intensifier, with no obvious tapering or visible bright metal. The
ebay lens doesn't have any place where an image intensifier could be
placed according to the old pictures.

thanks Bob (and Bruce too). apart from the cycling, i am just so
looking forward to being on the road, in that vast emptiness so to

Hi Ann
comments interspersed

no there is typically one per approx. two physical USB ports, max
four. also when you have ports on the front and back they will be
managed by different root hubs as a rule. they're really just little
chips on your mainboard. this bit of info you can safely ignore =)

> I'll call anyone that could be of  help (In the USA -or , very briefly in
> Canada ) I don't have a way to call anywhere else.

if all else fails i'd call you, I'd rather be last in the chain though
since calling from Germany isn't exactly free

please right-click the my computer icon, click properties, go to the
tab hardware and open device manager. expand (i think in english it
is) input devices, right-click the keyboard and choose
remove/uninstall (again dunno the proper translatíon, my windoze is in
German), do the same with all usb root hubs all the way down the tree.
then, reboot. this is probably what was done before, it forces the
computer to re-identify and reregister the usb subsystem and the
keyboard.

also if you have someone to do this with you - and i apologize for not
thinking of doing that any sooner - you can open a free and ad-free
support case on www.protonic.com - they are a very helpful community
even though the number of techs has gone down a bit lately. i used to
be in QM there and you can rest assured that every answer you get has
been reviewed by at least one other tech.

also, about your attempts to let me take over your computer, maybe you
just came too late and my computer was already off? we can try again
if you like later in the day

cheers

In the Z-1 time I measured burntime of several flashes at hand, they
all were much faster than the 1ms mentioned by Adam. It requires
additional measures in the design to increase the burntime, I have
seen that some Metz designs have that.

It could also be in _Hardware_:
In the past I measured the trigger pulse of my (P)Z-1 (Pentax hi end
35mm camera).
The trailing edge of the trigger pulse was the right timing
information for the rear curtain sync.

So the pulse width of the triggerpulse changed with shutterspeed.
And on the flash the decission could be for first or second curtain sync.
I made even a small interface circuit to get rear curtain sync with
non dedicated flashes.
I donot know if my K20 has the same info in the rear sync. I think it
would not harm other use if it was there.

When I'll be retired, I might find time to measure this.

E.G. like with a radio-sync transmitter or Vivitar 285HV? Dedicated

Is this something they could do with a firmware update?

Or is it something that would require radical hardware revision?

For that matter what do the dedicated pins on the Pentax shoe tell
the flash? I know what the big one in the center does, and it's
obvious which one is ground.

As rare as it must be, the starting price on this auction looks

I reread the "Spotmatic" No. 40 (April 2004): You're right, it's a 300mm

The mounting the tube seems also an original.

I've found it most effective for my taste at 1/15th second, generally when
there's already quite a lot of ambient light in the scene. These pictures
from midsummer a few years ago are my most successful and (I think)
effective efforts, shot at 1/15th. All shot with an Oly E-1 and Oly flash of
some sort.

Paul means a USB PCI card like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&Description=usb%20pci%20low%20profile&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=100

Note you'll need a low profile one for a Dell C521. If the one PCI
slot already has a card in it there are two PCI-e slots so you get
this instead (but more expensive):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&Description=usb%20pcie%20low%20profile&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=100

You wouldn't need any tools/screwdrivers to put the card in either,
it's all plastic clips.
