Speaking of (washing) photo bags

2010-08-30 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

My Orion Trekker bag is due to some cleaning... Any tips on the matter?
Can it be just thrown into the washing machine and then dried by the
Israeli sun? Or tumbler drier is better option? Or perhaps a hand wash?

Fascinating language barrier example. In Russian this is called "Copper

Absolutely. Using the P&S, I deleted many more images than I kept.
Now, with the K-x, my biggest challenge (at least in shooting drag
races) seems to be after-the-fact cropping -- trying to maintain a 5:4
ratio at the original resolution to help preserve IQ after resizing. I
assume that's the best way to go about it -- please tell me if I'm
wrong. :-)

Re: K7 or Kx

I was at WallyWorld today and saw Pop Photo for the first time in
ages. Big Ol' K7 on the cover. They extolled the virtues of the K7
and the DA 55-300 as a serious but affordable nature kit. They like
the Kx two lens kit as well, but the K7 with a Sigma 10-20 made the
cover as a "cityscape/landscape camera. PP always did give Pentax a
little dap.

Gear discovery Lowepro Inverse 200 AW belt pack

I've been looking for a good belt pack for about three years, I don't know if
they just came out, or the local store just started carying them, but the

that, the tripod straps are almost exactly right for strapping it to the rack

Re: PESO: My first Red Tail Hawk

2010-08-30 Thread Walter Gilbert
Very nice! I got a shot of one in flight a couple of months ago, but
it was utterly unusable. I just barely caught him in my peripheral
vision, and had to run around to the side of the house to get a shot of
him over an open field out back. There's also one that eludes my camera
on the way to work pretty regularly. He perches atop a street lamp in
the mornings, sometimes. I came very close to getting a great shot of
him, but one of those big utility trucks drove past and scared him off,
just as I was getting focused. I was livid about it all day.

Congrats on the shot!

PESO: My first Red Tail Hawk

2010-08-30 Thread David Parsons
My very first Red Tailed Hawk shots. They aren't the sharpest, and a
little blurry, but I was working quickly to get some shots before he
decided to fly off (and he flew off right after the second picture.

If the subject is in fairly close proximity and either coming toward or going
away from you that would be necessary. Then select or crop to create the best
composition in post.

Yes, Doug I realize that. Thing is one tends to focus and then compose and

Only problem with the "S" setting is the danger of holding "focus" too long

Sure. The DOF became extremely shallow.

No, both were shot in S setting. I switch between the two. The C
setting will give you a shutter release even if the subject isn't in
focus although it will attempt to lock in constantly. The S setting
yields more "will not fire" situations, but when it does go, it
usually lock right on.

Yes, the first is a relatively slow shutter pan -- 1/40th I believe.
While the ap was rather small, so DOF is great. I've found getting a
lock on focus with pans isn't as easy as one might think. The distance
from camera to subject is changing constantly, if only by a relatively
small amount.

Subject: GESO: Sikeston, Missouri Drag Strip

  Hi all,

Just wanted to share a set of photos I took yesterday on my first trip
to the Sikeston Drag Strip this year. There are a few pictures of a
little boy in an orange t-shirt that didn't turn out well, but I
included them anyway for the benefit of his parents, whom I met while
taking pictures and told them I'd post them. Otherwise, I think most of
the photos turned out pretty well. There are 61 images in all -- mostly
of good ol' American muscle car horsepower.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157624712518913/detail/

(All shots take with my K-x -- the vast majority with the 18-55mm kit
lens in aperture priority.)

Comments and critiques are, of course, welcome.

Best,

Walt

I have seen the statue in Moscow, and it is indeed enourmous.

The irony, of course, is that Peter hated Moscow and everything it
stood for. The more famous statue in the Bronze Horseman in St
Petersburg, by Falconet, which was imortalised in the Pushkin poem:

http://www.saint-petersburg.com/monuments/bronze-horseman.asp

The base is call the Thunder Stone, and is alleged to be the largest
stone (1200 tons) moved by manpower. No, the Bronze Horseman does not
have a small head like the
English statue.

It's kind of silly to put a 1.4x on a 20 rather than just using my 30, or just
using the 20 on my aps-c. The 1.4x would be for my longer lenses, though it
could be handy for putting on my 16-50 when I'm shooting at the dojo and
really need a 24-70.

This conversation reminded me that the TCs that came with the 300/2.8 would
work with my tamron adaptall macro, which only goes to 1:2.

Yes indeed, it is Peter the Great. He lived in John Evelyn's house, Sayes

I was struck by the similarity to the statue in St Petersburg. Didn't

My guess is that the statue was an unwanted Christmas present that Putin
managed to palm off to Lewisham Council. It's so bad it's magnificent - I'm
very fond of it. There is an inscription in Russian which Chris

Yes indeed, it is Peter the Great. He lived in John Evelyn's house, Sayes
Court, in Deptford for a while when he was studying ship-building in
Deptford. Apparently he completely trashed Evelyn's house. The garden was
said to be the finest in England. It survives as a rather forlorn
corporation park where people like to sit and smoke ganja or drink cider.

My guess is that the statue was an unwanted Christmas present that Putin
managed to palm off to Lewisham Council. It's so bad it's magnificent - I'm
very fond of it. There is an inscription in Russian which Chris
photographed; we hope one of the Russophones will be able to translate it.
Although I could read it, I couldn't make sense of it.

I don't have artistic intent. I just see stuff and take pictures of it.

As for the "nearly square" format, didn't really choose it, I merely
had to crop out some crap on the left hand side of the frame. There
was nothing on the top or bottom that I wanted to crop, so I left it
as is after the LHS was cropped out.

Yes it's cluttered. That's part of what attracted me and made me
shoot. Don't know why, it just did.

As for the DOF, it was shot at f2.5 on my f1.7 50mm. I'm not going to
get a lot shallower DOF than I have now.

Someone said something about a re-shoot: I don't do re-shoots.
Whatever photo was there at that moment is what I took. Maybe one day
I'll walk by there again and see another one to take, and if I do I'll
take it. But it won't be a re-shoot. It will be a completely
different picture.

;-)

Thanks all for the comments. I appreciate them all, and thanks for looking.

cheers,
frank

We have an old push mower like that. It's heavy enough that it's a pain to
bring out of the shed It's old enough that I had to take it apart last year
and reshape a couple of the parts in the ratchet mechanism because they were so
worn.

One of these days I might get a motor mower because the push mower is no good
on wet grass. There is the laziness factor but it's good to put the iPod on
and enjoy the sunshine.

18-250 repair, AF-540FGZ keeps flopping down with Lumiquest

2010-08-30 Thread eckinator
Hi gang,

first of all, the good news:
A big thank you to Pentax for fixing my K10D free of charge and also
to Novoflex for doing the same with my macro rail and shift adaptor.

Next, the not so good news:
My 18-250's stuck zoom will cost € 103 to fix and it will be every bit
as loose afterwards. The zoom can't be made to have more friction.
Just FYI.

And while on the subject of things slipping down/out unexpectedly:
My AF-540FGZ's reflector won't stay put when I point it up for
indirect illumination with a Lumiquest bounce-something attached (I
have 3 different ones, eBay steal, same difference to a degree), it
keeps flopping down, the leverage is just too much for what little
stiction the reflector can muster. I was wondering if anyone had a DIY
fix or suggestion what I might do? I was thinking to put a length of
3mm accessory cord and a tanka around the base of the flash maybe and
somehow attach it to the reflector but it seems awfully cumbersome
given I have to change the reflector's position every time I go from
landscape to portrait and back. There has to be a better way. Your
suggestions will be much appreciated.

Cheers

I was going to mention to Dave that it was a good job he didn't try
taking this photo in the UK. He'd probably be writing his posts from a
warm cell  :-)

Dave, I was approached by a security guy when photographing at the
Christian Science fountain in Boston while kids were playing in the
are. He said police could be involved if I was photographing the kids.
It's ridiculous.
