Nice stuff there Ted.
I went recently to a local air museum that has a number of British
warplanes, including a Hawker Hunter which was built while I worked for
Hawker Aircraft Co. in 1956. This was quite spooky, as it is very possible
that some of the cockpit canopy parts were those I had treated when I spent
six weeks in the anodising plant. At least they had obviously not failed,
so maybe I did a better job than an inattentive apprentice usually did!

RE: For those who wants spec sheets before announcement

2010-09-29 Thread John Coyle
Tan, I do the same thing too. Three of my grandchildren were here for the
last two days, and taking shots of them dancing you have to be quick, no
time to muck about with menus and buttons. The alternative is manual
focussing, pre-set usually to where the action point will be - a technique I
used when there was a sack-race for the kids at another grandchild's
birthday recently. I have to say that I am a bit of a Luddite when it comes
to some of the fancy features on today's digital cameras: it's sometimes
hard to see the point (pun intended!). I think it was Weegee who said that
the secret of his success in photography was "F8 and be there" - I go along
with that.

This is an interesting line of conversation for me, as I NEVER use anything
BUT the centre focus point. I am in such a habit of positioning that point
on whatever I want in focus and half-pressing to lock it, then moving the
camera to recompose the shot, I find it clumsy and time-consuming to play
with focus points. Especially, when I am shooting fast moving kids, it is
so intuitive to me now, to do as I just mentioned and I just don't even
think about it anymore.

Would I benefit, do you think from changing this habit and selecting
individual focus points? Is there a way of doing this quickly, and without
lots of button pressing?

Tan. :)

While I don't do a lot of studio portraiture, I do some, and I frequently
shoot people. I admit I sometimes have to reposition from the top or second
tier outside point before clicking the shutter. I guess I've learned to live
with that inconvenience and don't even think about it. But a few more points
in that area wold be helpful. However, I still want the fast, low-light lock
on the most. That would make ti a winner for me.

4 way controller on the back can be set up to do it. The selected one
lights up in the viewfinder. It works well for all subjects moving
semi-fast and slower

FWIW, the selected point also shows up on the rear "info" display (on the K7).

Re: Prophoto RGB, gamma and other Qs

2010-09-29 Thread Fernando
Thanks Godfrey, I went with the Eye One Display 2 based on your
advice -and with Bill Robb later confirmation as well.

Today I got a batch of prints done at my local Photo Lab
(http://www.pikto.ca/). It's close to my place and has profiles
available -I used their Frontier+Fuji Matte Paper.
I`m happy with the result, even viewing under tungsten light prints
match fairly well -had to play with some of the options in photoshop
soft proof menu though.

Finally no more darker prints: thanks to Mark's Monitor tips and the
i1 calibration recommended by Godfrey, now I have an affordable color
calibrated setup and I even successfully played with skin tones
(wouldn't dare before) -testing lightroom as well, found that nudging
the red and orange I get better skin tones (Hue Red +20, Lum Orange
+18 and Sat Red -9) still found Capture One pro skin tools more useful
though (using both tools on trial for now).

And speaking on Lightroom V3, that B&W module is awesome -better than
anything I tried other than PS. I rescued a couple of shots with the
conversion tool in a couple of minutes:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4128/5038332778_e1b587bdb6_o.jpg

But the best investment so far this year has been getting Bruce
Fraser's Real World Sharpening for $7, it's an old book and refers to
older versions of CS2 but still relevant
http://www.amazon.com/World-Image-Sharpening-Adobe-Photoshop/dp/0321449916/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_7

Later and hope everything is ok

Been sort'a wondering why we hadn't read or seen anything from you for awhile.
"The" Penguin shot had no chance of not making the Premier Collection.
Validates the process for me.

Re: OT - Sistine Chapel

2010-09-29 Thread Stan Halpin
I kept thinking the same thing at numerous sites in Rome that obviously had not
been planned for electric lights, air conditioning, etc. Who did the retrofit!
We were there in 2009. The Chapel speakers are used for periodic announcements
asking visitors to be respectful, to be quiet, and to not take photographs. The
announcements are somewhat drowned out by the noise of camera shutters and
people talking. But it is a marvelous place if you can ignore the noise. The
virtual visit Cotty pointed us to is great but being there in person makes the
lines and crowds and noise level all worthwhile.

Perhaps, but I suppose Michel's aim is to out this guy as a plagiarist.
No doubt the English translation is useful, but for Dave Schneller to
simply publish it without any sort of acknowledgment is inexcusable.

I've had a similar experience with a (non photographic) web site I
manage and the guilty party apologized and took down the copied pages.
I hope Michel posts the outcome in this case.

Is the alleged offender, Dave Schneller, associated with the PDML in any
way? I don't recognize the name.

Re: Monitor Calibration System

2010-09-29 Thread P N Stenquist
My Spider 2 calibrated iMac 24 is a perfect match for my Epson R2880
and R 2400 output with the brightness turned all the way down. Perhaps
I just got lucky, but it's a completely adequate monitor for both
printing and publishing. I have an Apple Cinema Display 23 sitting
alongside, an dit doesn't show as good a range of highlight and shadow
detail as the iMac 24. However, I have heard all the complaints, and
the brightness does have to be turned all the way down for
photographic rendering.

Re: K7 versus K5

That's what I was looking for. Thanks Paul. I haven' run into some of the
autofocus problems that others have experienced with the Pentax dSLRs, so I
don't know if it is a design flaw or a quality control problem that people are
experiencing. But I don't really use many lenses with a huge focusing throw
(like macro) where the lens searches a lot for a focus. My macro is on an
Olympus E-1 (and it can be problematic on that camera).

bit. Can anyone offer (in a sentence or two) why a person who has a K-7 would
want to or need to upgrade to a K-5? Would a K-5 be considered to have the
improvements of a K-x but in a much more durable body?

Re: PESO: Alabaster & Coal

2010-09-29 Thread Walter Gilbert

  Thank you, Michael!

The thing I like most about the shot is that it has made me a more
confident photographer. I'm not nearly as hesitant about approaching
potential subjects as I was before taking this one. In that sense, it's
opened up a new outlet for me -- which is a real benefit.

Thanks again!

Re: For those who wants spec sheets before announcement

2010-09-29 Thread P N Stenquist
I think you would benefit from choosing a focus point in situations
where DOF is minimal. Repositioning after locking in focus slightly
alters the distance from lens to subject. It can be a significant
difference when shooting a tight portrait, for example, with a lens of
moderate focal length -- say a 40 mm lens. When shooting moving kids I
usually go for the center spot on top or in the second row. That
comes closer to the eye level than does the center spot. Changing
focal points is quick and easy once you get used to it. My thumb now
does it automatically, and my brain nows that if I'm on the top spot
and want to go to the left spot in the second row from the bottom,
it's three clicks down and one left.

it is

Would I benefit, do you think from changing this habit and selecting

Ok, Found the specs at DPReview. I take it SAFOX IX+ is a
crippled whore

that can run a little faster?
Note to Pentax: Put a new AF into your cameras and stop hobbling
them

with an 11 point system.

I think I'll wait to hear from someone who has actually TRIED the K5
autofocus before passing judgement. I always pick my own focus
points, and
11 are adequate. All I want is better lock on. The K7 is a lot
better than
the K20. I suspect this camera will be another significant
improvement. But

like I said, I'm not going to pass judgement, based on the DP whiners.

Obviously we don't have the same wants in a camera, 11 points in the
current emulation is at best adequate sometimes, and at worst is
inadequate
much of the time. I always pick my AF point as well, and sometimes,
there

is even a focus point where I want it to be.
The major exception to this is studio portraiture (which you don't
do a
lot of), where the end point isn't ever in the right spot and the
next tier

in is too close to the center to be of any use.
I wouldn't mind the 11 point AF if they'd move the points around a
bit to
make them useful, but I suspect that losing the left hand point and
moving
it to the right side and moving both end sensors off center halfway
between
the location of the mid point sensors would cause the people who
think the
present system is adequate to whine like a 747 coming in for a
landing.

While I don't do a lot of studio portraiture, I do some, and I
frequently
shoot people. I admit I sometimes have to reposition from the top or
second
tier outside point before clicking the shutter. I guess I've learned
to live
with that inconvenience and don't even think about it. But a few
more points
in that area wold be helpful. However, I still want the fast, low-
light lock

on the most. That would make ti a winner for me.

FWIW, the selected point also shows up on the rear "info" display (on the K7).

The K20D was so good at it, as it only needed to press the unmistakable
'4-way ring' while looking through the viewfinder.
The K-7 is a lot worse, as you have to find the proper arrow button (no
longer a ring, unfortunately) and you risk to press the evil LV button
instead. It happens to me about 50% of the times, thus resulting in the Live
View screen flashing in your eye, while the viewfinder blacks-out! I find
this the most annoying step back of the K-7 upon the K10D/K20D series. I've
asked Pentax to update the K-7/K-5 firmware so that the LV button can be
disabled, while re-assigning the LV function to the trash button, which has
no use while shooting. To no avail, of course!

They've created a listing and a "notify when in stock" button. Hoping the

GESO from trip to local air museum

2010-09-29 Thread tbeilby
Sunday, our photo society, PSNWA, paid a visit to the Arkansas Air Museum
here in Fayetteville. We were able to get into the museum a couple of hours
before it was open to the public. We were hoping to be able to roll a few
aircraft outside but the weather precluded that. I decided to tryout the HDR
function on my K 7 and found that it worked well for some shots but others I
prefered the normal exposure. Most shots were jpegs but some were raws. All
were postprocessed in LR2.

Re: Monitor Calibration System

2010-09-29 Thread Rick Womer
Yes. It is okay. On the second try I got my laptop and external monitor to
match perfectly (laptop + docking station = desktop work computer), and the
laptop matches the home desktop nicely.

The primary problem is that one cannot adjust luminance, and iMacs are =bright=
even when turned down as much as the OS allows.

Some early units had defective sensors, that gave monitors a magenta cast. So,
you would buy a used one at some risk.

Cheers,

Rick
