I'd recommend Wordpress. We build quite a few Wordpress sites at work and it's
good enough that our designers can handle it without getting me involved. The
only thing I hate about it is that it's a pain to change domain names (eg
moving from a test environment to production).

Joomla is harder to learn but is very flexible once you know what you're doing.
I like it much more than Wordpress but I've had a few years experience with it.

Regarding security you only need to keep two things in mind:
1. Keep the system up to date. Security patches come out fairly regularly for
any of the popular CMSes and once an exploit is known then it's only a matter
of time until they find your site.
2. Be careful which themes / extensions / plugins you install as the coders
aren't always competent. Keep them up to date as well.

I've had to clean up hacked installs of both Joomla and Wordpress. Two
instances were due to external password breaches, the rest were just out of
date software.

BTW Wordpress is very good at notifying you of updates for both the core CMS
and its plugins & themes. You can see what's available when logged in via your
admin area and if your server is appropriately set up, upgrades are just one
click away if you're not too concerned about making backups. I did once have a
theme update break a site so be warned :)

As for the others, I won't go starting a flame war with my opinion of Drupal ;)
I've not used Typo3 so I'm not qualified to comment on it.

Cheers,
Dave

What a fucking rock ape!

(I don't swear much at all, and definitely not on list either, but that guys
deserves it!)

Truck drivers and motorists in general are total wankers to cyclists.
Everyone knows how much our planet would benefit if more able bodied people
would take to cycling - not just at the environmental level, but our overall
health would be improved, less burden on taxes/medical system as a result
etc etc.

My hubby and I are keen cyclists but I refuse to ride on the road anymore.
I have five kids who need a mummy and I am not willing to risk my life at
the ends of one of the rock apes, that somehow managed to find themselves a
drivers licence in the bottom of a Cornflake box.

Last year, my husband made it home, (bleeding and barely conscious) after
having a FULL BEER BOTTLE thrown at the back of his head by a car of drunken
teenagers, on his way home from work at 6pm on a Friday night. That was the
end for me. People are DICKHEADS, and it really riles me up that they seem
to think that THEY own the roads. We even have protests around the place
and you see on tv, interviews with drivers saying that cyclists shouldn't be
allowed on the road as they don't have a licence and don't pay car

Your comments are appreciated, but no lack of contrast with this pic. The
earlier photo you're referring to was somewhat flat because it was direct
window light. More evenly lit than flat actually, but each to their own. On the
other hand, this shot has plenty of shadow -- on the right cheek, under the
chin, and every wrinkle in her face is pretty hard edged. The black values are
right around 5 on the histogram and the highlights are around 250. Any more
contrast, and it would be out of the box.

Can't, however, see why that would be a problem, especially when shooting in

Only once so far for me. The camera has not been used that much. It had had
only 2000 or so shutter actuations when I got it last summer. Don't know how
many I've added. Certainly not very many compared to what might be expected
over the life of the camera.

Unfortunately, I don't have any warranty. Keeping my fingers crossed. Not ready
for a K-x -- or K-r -- yet. Haven't learned all this camera has to teach me.

RE: OT - Another bad break for a cyclist

2010-12-20 Thread Tanya Love

We even have protests around the place
and you see on tv, interviews with drivers saying that cyclists shouldn't be
allowed on the road as they don't have a licence and don't pay car
registration to assist in maintaining the roads etc.

They are effing idiots, and it pisses me off no end, and I am not
apologising for the language guys, cause Frank was just doing his job, and
that guy needs a smack in the head himself...

Typing real slow as my left hand's in a splint with my middle fingers taped
together. Broke a bone in my hand after a driver attacked me and threw me
down on my bike (bent my seatpost as well!). Should be better in about a
month - not a bad break, no surgery needed thank god.

He cuts me off, I yell at him that I had right of way, he gets out of truck,
grabs me (while I'm walking away with both hands on handlebars and 25 pounds
in my backpack so I'm defenceless) and throws me to ground. I try to get
plate number so he pushes me to ground again and drives away.

He couldn't be traced so cops can't do a thing. I may have a claim against
the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board.

Incident happened Friday, went to hospital Sunday and yesterday got
temporary cast off and got fitted for splint.

Still working, with a Metropass, riding transit and walking.

Can ride again next Monday.

Taking camera with me to work now, so that's a good thing!

;-)

cheers,
frank

Re: OT which open source/free CMS for complete beginner

2010-12-20 Thread Darren Addy
Does your web host have SimpleScripts or Fantastico?
If so, I'd recommend using Prestashop for your eCommerce sites:
photogear.eckinator.com
remoteaxe.eckinator.com

2 Prestashop installations will allow you to duplicate your knowledge
of setup and administration.
Google: free Prestashop templates
if you don't want to start from scratch

For your basic pages site (www.eckinator.com) take a look at SilverStripe
http://www.silverstripe.com/
and CMS Made Simple
http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/

Drupal is a bit of one piece of software trying to do it all. Since
your duties are easily subdivided by subdomain, there is no need to
try to do it all under one piece of software/domain (IMHO).

PESO - coffee shop portrait

2010-12-20 Thread paul stenquist
I really wanted to shoot this lady because she was very expressive. But she was
quite close and I was in her field of vision. And of course, if she knew I was
shooting her that would destroy the moment. So I shot her using live view with
the camera in my lap. The K-5 live view autofocus is a huge improvement over
that of the k-7. It's very useful. This pic is at ISO 1600, f4, 1.250th, 60mm,
the lens was the DA* 60-250. Shot this past Saturday. Mostly window light from
a wide expanse of windows on a cloudy day. That's my favorite lighting setup

there will be no information kept there except a db of newsletter

Hi Kent,
I'm starting my own business next month doing four things
1) selling an extremely awesome remote access solution, my main area
of business and the one to push out all the others once it takes off
and provides a consistent passive income from software maintenance
agreements and such. also selling messagelabs aka now symantec hosted
services (the yellow peril bought it...)
2) IT consultancy and services (sideline for customers of 1) who want
a one stop source, plus some legacy customers and one company that
uses me as a subcontractor), I will not actively market this service
outside of my network
those two are my priority, the other two are
3) translation, english and french into german, separate site
4) selling used photo gear, again separate site, doesn't need to be an
online shop system due to small number of items
I want something clean and professional looking, ideally including the
environmentally friendly aspect of teleworking so it can be kinda
greenish =)
thanks

One more thing. If you have an agency in mind, I'd ask them. Some of
them specialise in certain CMS packages. If all you're going to do
with it after it's created is update pages, I don't think it really
matters which you go with. Just pick the interface you like to work
with the most when you evaluate them. Security is a concern, but most
of the time if you're going with a CMS, you're probably not keeping a
database full of client credit card numbers around. :)

I'd say try their demos or get a free account with them and see what
you like. At least you can do that with joomla and wordpress, I don't
know about the other two. I've work with all you listed, except for
typo3. I like joomla and wordpress the best, for ease of use. Drupal
I used a few years ago, I'm sure it's changed a lot since then. At
that time it was more geared toward multi-user setups, that's why I
was using it.

What do you want to do with the site? Hiring someone to create a
website for you can cost a lot of money. But you probably know that.
Unless you want something real sophisticated, it's pretty easy to put
up a basic website (blog, static pages, photo gallery) with any of the
packages you mention.

The K7 will be sold out and retired. I'm talking about a Kx
(beginner), Kr, and K5. Pentax needs a $500 camera, and if they can't
make the Kr for that, then they should keep the Kx. I've seen too
much good work with that camera on the PDML to doubt its quality, and
too much interest throughout the photo lit to doubt its marketability.

thanks steve, I am kind of leaning towards drupal from what I've read
so far. what do you think would be a reasonable amount of time an
agency would require to develop a web site (visual appearance only, no
texts) containing the following:
welcome page
about me
products and services
terms and conditions
newsletter subscription page
reference page (50% external links)
link page to my other activities
pages shouldnt look all the same with only text differing but rather
there should be an overall theme plus a sub theme for each topic
thanks again

i'd recommend Drupal for its overall flexibility and security, and the
fact that it has the most thriving Open Source community; it isn't the
easiest to maintain, though Drupal 7 (currently in RC2 release) improves
it quite a bit, and Drupal Gardens is a free service that will host and
maintain your site, and it lets export it later if you want to host it
and maintain it yourself, or upgrade to a paid version ($20/month) to
get rid of ads and get more support

there are quite a lot of free Drupal themes (Drupal Gardens offers a
more limited selection)	, some of which are quite good, but if you want
a "professional" design, i'd recommend Top Notch Themes:

my bias: i develop Drupal sites, i know WordPress & Joomla mainly by
reputation, and don't know Typo3 at all; i used to work with a firm that
did Drupal support for Top Notch Themes

Nicely composed, I'd have liked it better if the sign were over more in the
frame, but you don't get the choice of that stuff in a street portrait. I
might crop it just below the sign.

Something about the processing looks interesting. Did you desaturate or
unsharpen her skin tones?

Unless they can make money on the Kr for the price of the Kx, they should. The
Kx is an amazing camera for the price. Hell, it's pretty amazing all the way
around. IMNSHO Pentax should sell as many as they can, for as little as they
can, just to bring people into the fold.

The Kr costs a bit more, and you pay a premium for the features, but it's still
a good deal and it addresses the major shortcomings of the Kx (focus points and
feel). The K5 is a damned nice aps flagship.

Christine commented on the name when I posted the set from January. The boat is
permanently moored there and people live on it. I must pluck up the courage one
day to ask them "why?". The main reference I can find on the web is a beer:

Sounds like a good solution. But I frequently move from the desk to another
location two or three times a day, so separate computers work well for me.
Plus, I e-mail all work to myself and download it to the other computer, when I
switch off, so that gives me an extra backup as well.

just need to adapt the FW800 to FW400 at the computer to start the
chain, this little $12 adapter does a great job:

moshi FireWire 800 to 400 adapter (on Amazon)
http://tinyurl.com/2f4y3dy

It's what I use for my FW400 connection off the Mac Mini.

One thing I've found with the Mac Mini compared to my PowerMac G5 is
that Apple has invested heavily into USB 2.0 optimization. Where on
the G5 a USB 2.0 device couldn't even remotely approach the
performance of the same device connected via FW400, now the USB2
device are at near-parity and sometimes edge out the FW400 connection.

FW still has an advantage on sustained high-volume throughput and has
features lacking in USB2 (multi-master, more reliable power, etc), but
I have no problems using either of these two interfaces now when
optimizing data transfers and doing image processing. FW800 on
suitably well engineered devices, of course, out-performs USB2 and
FW400 but I haven't found I need to upgrade all of my drive
enclosures: current performance is quite satisfactory for still
photography work.

I'd guess that Pentax is keeping the K-x model going because they can
very easily compete with the entry level Canons and Nikons right now.

The K-x is, AFAICT, doing great biz for Pentax here in Canada. Stores
that haven't carried Pentax for years are selling the K-x alongside
other entry level Canons and Nikons, and beating them all on price. My
BIL was able to grab a K-x with kit lens for my niece for about $530
Canadian a few weeks ago. The store he got it from is Blacks, a
country-wide chain that mainly caters to the P&S crowd. For the last few
years Blacks only carried a few Pentax P&S's like the waterproof models.

I have no way of knowing if Pentax is simply dumping the remainder of
existing K-x inventory before price-dropping the K-r or if in fact they
are manufacturing new K-x stock to supply the demand for price-sensitive
entry level DSLRs here.

But in any event it's a good sign that the Pentax name is returning to
mainstream retailers here.

Re: Ever seen a DA*55 failure?

2010-12-20 Thread Thibouille
JC, I can't compare directly because I do not own a DA55/1.4 so what
I'll say here is from readings here and there.

The K55 is a fine lens but not regarded as the 50s (all kinds).
The DA*55 has nothing to do with it.
Supposedly (being cautious) the K55 < 50s < DA*55 as far as sharpness
is concerned.

Anyone lending me DA*55, I'd be happy to compare :)

Re: Played with a K-r for a couple minutes today.

2010-12-20 Thread Thibouille
Four actually. IMO K-x and K-7 are end of production.
They won't stay but it makes right now some funny buying decisions:
K-r or K-7 at about the same price ??

I know I'd the the K-7 but sensor isn't the biggest problem for me right now.
I'd like to upgrade to K-5 but as a couple others, I won't pay full
price this time and have a couple other interests going on (like MF
TLR, film developing and so on). K-7 will do the job right so I don't
care so much.

IMO it is extremely unlikely. Kr is obviously an upgrade of Kx,
therefore it would have to be purely marketing decision to keep both. I
don't think Pentax has the capacity to /keep/ producing three 16x24
frame cameras and 645D at the same time.

I'll be curious to see if Pentax maintains three levels of body
prices, i.e., Kx, Kr, K5.

Every joke I can think of for "Heisenberg Compensator" is
inappropriate for a family audience. After all, Schrödinger was the

Re: Peso: Hiberbation

2010-12-20 Thread Steven Desjardins
Thanks for the suggestions, folks. I've never really made my peace
with winter "exposure" so I thought I'd try a bit harder this winter
with RAW. I may try the shot again with the FA135, which will isolate
the tractor better than the 55 upper end I had yesterday. It's
interesting that I felt the branches framed the shot and for that
reason I tend to shoot that way. I'll definitely try it with a bit
less clutter.
