It is probably not paranoia, but it surely left its mark. 20 mln is an
official figure. It stands to reason that the actual figure may be
substantially more. Saying that every family (literally) was affected by
the war (death in the battlefield, loss to hunger, wound, etc) is
probably quite correct.

Many of us Americans view the Russians as paranoid, mostly because we

Ken, there is no such thing as Pentax Israel company. Some other local
company was given the rights of official re-seller and so on. There are
others as official, but this one is the biggest. They sell many brands

Trust me, it would have made no sense asking for the supervisor in this

Igor, I sincerely and most respectfully think that you overestimate or
overrate the regular clerks with whom you have to deal at Pentax
Services (whatever specific organization is).

Pentax USA, do you hear me?
Are you a serious company who is serious about its CS or just a bunch
of opportunists reselling products from Pentax-Japan?

My uneducated guess would be 2/3 of the latter and at most 1/3 of the
former.

Here is a brief transcript of my process of obtaining the price of K-5
in Israel.

_Day A_
Them: Hello
Me: Hello, whom am I speaking with?
Them: My name is X
Me: I'd like to know the price of new Pentax camera - the K-5
Them: Wait a moment
/some noise/
Them: Thank you for your wait. I don't have the price right now. Let
me write your phone number and we'll return to you shortly.
Me: Here is the number.
/end of conversation/

_A week later!_
Them: Hello
Me: Hello, who's on the line?
Them: My name is Y
Me: I'd like to talk to X, please
Them: They are not available at the moment, what can I do for you?
Me: I called you a week ago in order to get a quote on Pentax K-5, the
new camera. Are there any news?
Them: I am sorry, I cannot help you, but I can pass a message to X.
Please give me your phone number.
Me: Here is the number. But can you please make it happen in less than
a week?
Them: Oh, sure, she'll call you later today or in the worst case
tomorrow.
/end of conversation/

_Yet another week later!!_
Them: Hello
Me: Hello, with whom do I have an honor of speaking?
Them: My name is X, what can I do for you?
Me: Oh! Hello there, don't you remember I called you two weeks ago
about Pentax K-5?
Them: Hmmm Oh, may be...
Me: Well, so do you have an answer for me? I kind of need a price to
buy it from you.
Them: Sorry, but I don't. I can offer you another camera, just as good
- K-7, we have few left at very attractive price point.
Me: No, thank you - I have one already and want to upgrade
Them: Ok, can you give me a phone number...
Me (starting to aggravate really): No, I gave it to you twice - once
to you two weeks ago and the next week to your co-worker Y... Can't
you just give me the darn price quote?
Them: Please stay on the line...
/some noise/
Them: Thank you for your wait. The price would be ... and the camera
will have to be brought by the special order as we're not planning to
bring it here in numbers yet...
/the rest is irrelevant/

And that, dear Igor, is one of the major camera gear importers here
who happens to be also an official Canon dealer and this specific
department (just two women) is their private customers sale force...

Mere fact that my gear gets fixed when I need it has to be considered
a blessing.

Actually that doesn't really let you learn the craft of photography,
that lets you take pictures under favorable circumstances. You may

Very nice. I like the way the woman in the foreground is staring off
to the side, while the two background figures are facing towards the
center of the frame. It make the foreground woman seem very lonely,
isolated and despondent.

I also love the slogan. In the NYC subway system, gum is the least of
the many things they have to worry about . . . .

Droid 2 phone pic

2011-01-06 Thread Paul Stenquist
I had to purchase a smart phone, because I've missed a couple of Times
assignments, due to no e-mail access. Plus, believe it or not, they want me to
"tweet" from the NAIAS auto show floor on press day.

The cool part about all this is that the Droid 2 comes with a 5 megapixel
camera in a 16 x 9 format. I haven't had time to do any real photography with
it, but I did step out on my deck and shoot the frozen garden in my backyard.
Not bad. Looks like quite a bit of noise reduction, which makes sense, and I
sharpened it a bit and bumped up the saturation in PhotoShop, since the day was
dark and gray. It's here:

Pentax USA, do you hear me?
Are you a serious company who is serious about its CS or just a bunch

Mere fact that my gear gets fixed when I need it has to be considered
a blessing.

Particularly with some of the reviews out there that call the Droid 2
camera "mediocre".
One article's quote:

The Droid 2 is a total upgrade from the original Droid, with one
exception: the camera. The Droid's camera was bad, and the Droid 2's
camera isn't much better. The 5-megapixel snapper took decent shots
outdoors with bright, natural looking colors, but details weren't as
sharp as photos taken with the Droid X or the iPhone 4.

I was even less impressed with my indoor shots. A few had a greenish
cast to them, but this may have been due to the lighting. Details were
a bit soft too; not as sharp as photos taken with the recently
reviewed XPeria X10. I also detected some graininess, and a few
objects had a sort of ghostly aura around them. The camera's autofocus
isn't very effective, and despite the nice variety of scene effects, I
didn't find them to be very useful in improving my shots.

Another strange omission is the lack of support for 720p-quality video
capture, which is pretty much the default for high-end cameras these
days. The Droid 2 captures at 480p, and there's no dedicated
"narration" mode for capturing your own musings via video. Video
quality was decent, although a bit pixelated when capturing
fast-moving objects. Despite the missing narration mode, the Droid X
did capture audio pretty well. Another plus: one of the treats in
Android 2.2 is the ability to use your camera's flash as a light for
shooting video in dimly-lit environments.

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/product/646269/review/droid_2.html

Of course, these articles are from back in August, so maybe they
upgraded the camera they put in them in response to the reviews?

Re: Droid 2 phone pic

2011-01-06 Thread paul stenquist
I read that same article before I bought the phone. The Droid X, which the
author cites, has an 8 megapixel camera. I'm suspicious of the noise level with
that many pixels on an itty-bitty sensor. I know my 5-megapixel Panasonic P&S
delivers plenty of resolution for most purposes. But I wasn't shopping for a
camera. I needed a communication device with a screen large enough for an old
fart to be able to read e-mails. Both the Droid X and Droid 2 have nice big
screens. But the Droid X has only a touch-screen keyboard. The Droid 2 has a
touch screen keyboard and a pushbutton keyboard that slides out the side. It's
like a mini computer keyboard. With my fat fingers, I have a real problem with
touch-screen keyboards. I found the Droid 2 keyboard made typing much easier.
The fact that it has a decent camera was just a pleasant surprise.

I'm not terribly thrilled with the image quality in my first generation Moto
Droid. What I do like about it though is the ability to geotag photos, so if I
want to go back and see where I took a photo, I can.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/collections/72157622699921737/

A few apps that I find very helpful:

K-9 mail is better than the original mail client.
Compass is now very handy because you can tag a spot with GPS and use it to
find that spot later, like when you park your car in an unfamiliar city.

My friend Ed wrote an RPN calculator that's very nice, it acts just like one of
the old HPs.

Tricorder is amazing, it gives you access to all of the sensors in the droid:
accelerometers, magnetic flux, gps, and will even do FFTs on the audio input.

Google sky is very, very cool.

Shop savvy allows you to take a picture of a products UPC code and will look up
prices on the web for better deals either on the web, or in local stores that
have their prices posted.

others worth checking out:
wifi analyzer
gps status
navy clock
bubble level

I'm also learning to use swype for input, and it seems to work very well.

I'm trying to learn the development environment for it, but it's a bit
challenging.

OT - Adobe CS Live: of any use?

2011-01-06 Thread Bruce Walker
When I registered the Photoshop CS5 upgrade, I was "rewarded" with a one
year subscription to Adobe CS Live. That seemed nice until I looked
around the intro pages and found that the services it offers are a
browser compatibility test for your web designs (I'm not doing any), and
a whole bunch of other densely buzzword-infested things that will work
wonders for my workflow, apparently.

Now I just got a reminder from Adobe that I've got access to this
wonderful service but I haven't used it. And it's going to expire next
November. Oh noes!

So, am I actually missing something here? Is there anything at all
relevant to a photographer in CS Live?

645D fiddling

2011-01-06 Thread AlunFoto
Fiddled with a 645D today. Some observations:

1. The aperture coupler works. One can bring any lens out of its "A"
position, and the aperture is still reported correctly to the camera.

2. With extension tubes attached, exposure remains correct. Lens IDs
of FA and DA lenses are not reported, though.

3. Exposure of snow scenes is more conservative (ie a little too dark)
than what you find with eg. K-7.

4. There's no snap-in focus with manual focus lenses. This is the same
as for 645N/645Nii.

5. You will not boost your FPS by going from "single" to "multiple"
drive mode. :-)

6. There is a blessed absence of LiveView, video, and in-camera
post-processing presets.

oh, and what should be the zeroth point:
It takes absolutely fabulous pictures, even of crappy motifs. :-)

That's true of K-5 as well. More accurate, IMO, since the meter assumes an
overall balance.

Re: 645D fiddling

2011-01-06 Thread P. J. Alling
Since I'm pretty sure that the Flex board in the K-7 is the same as that
in the 645D, (it would only make sense from a cost perspective), and the
A lenses are supposedly electronically comparable from K mount to 645
mount, Pentax could easily implement such a thing in a future higher
level K body much as Nikon has done with their higher level bodies with
their older lenses. I'd pay a little extra for a K-3 with that
capability. Probably even buy one before a major price drop for it.

So we get an aperture simulator for 10,000 bucks?

You got it in one.
