This is how I work too, generally I set the in camera JPEG to 2Mpx and no software I have used has had problems with the in-camera generated JPEG files. To me it seems that somehow the files are being truncated or otherwise modified on import, I would try to check images on an alternate system straight from the card using another card reader, then at least the general source of the problem could be identified. Modified on import, or somehow being broken in-camera. I'd suspect this of being an isolated problem; if it were endemic I'd have thought that we'd have heard about it long before this. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

RE: K20D files and Lightroom (Windows)
-Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Robert and Leigh Woerner [...] The reason I like shooting JPEGs is that I can apply settings in camera so that I can quickly email, etc. to friends who lack software that can deal with RAW files. Again, this is a real PITA. Windows Photo Viewer (which is supplied with Win7) can read DNG files and attach jpeg version to emails with one menu click. You can't use it for any editing, but for a quick email it's perfectly adequate - much more convenient than using LR. You could also see if it will read you embedded jpgs and send them. B Thanks for the replies thus far. I just edited 19 RAW images and exported them as JPEGs for posting on Facebook, emailing, etc. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
GESO: fantail
I had a great time with a little fantail this afternoon. They aren't shy at all - if you're careful they will happily perch a couple of feet away and fly to within inches of you. He even ate a bug off my foot. Unfortunately that does make them prone to predation. http://www.multi.net.nz/fantail-apr-10/ They eat insects on the wing and people tend to stir those insects up as they move about. It's fun to watch their antics as they flit through the air in random directions while happily chirping to each other. I consider it a real blessing to have them hanging around our garden. My late grandmother used to like them so they do remind me of her. I had a lot of trouble with the light and ended up using the RTF at 800ISO. Other than that it's the good old K10D, FA*200mm f/2.8 and FA 100mm f/2.8 Macro. You know it's a good day birding when you have to use the 100mm macro. Not quite as easy as it might appear, the major issue lies with the actual plane of focus on a sensor assembly vs the materials that must be placed in front of the light sensitive surface. IOW the sensor assembly would need to slightly protrude into the mirror box, not a great situation when combined with a focal plane shutter ;-) Any protective coverings would have to be thin enough they wouldn't protrude materially beyond the film plane or the whole idea wouldn't work. - No virus found in this message. Re: PESO: Daisies 'n Moss
As a completely neutral observer, I think something in between the two versions would work. The lighter shadows bring out some color and texture from the shadow side of the rock. But it seems the brightly lit areas get a bit brighter as well. Perhaps, lighten the shadows about half as much without boosting the brightness of the rest of the image. My $0.02 as long as I don't have to do any of the work. From: Jack Davis I really don't know in what way you see your version different from what I stated. I did another quick images exchange and to me, your do is still flatter due to your having lightened the shadows. As I initially stated, I prefer more depth. It's fine to use multiple times. Just put the cap on between uses and spin the cap once or twice before using. It's considered disposable, so it's not something that you'll be using forever. Re: PDML Book update and expenses
Ideas for places to advertise the book: We should, of course, send word to Ned, and press releases to the major online photo blogs. It probably would not hurt to send emails of the press releases to the dead tree photo mags either. Are there any sort of pediatric oncology trade journals, professional websites etc? I wonder of Pentax USA would be willing to buy some to sell at trade shows? They'd get a tax writeoff, a great way to show off the abilities of the gear, good PR etc. If they buy in on the concept, it could be worth it to them to have more than a few printed, which could greatly lower the cost per book. Someone should set up a facebook event for selling them. Events are the easiest way on facebook to get the word out to a lot of people, and it seems that most people younger than 40 have facebook accounts, albeit with a fairly steep dropoff in age for folks over 50. I wonder if anyone has the chops to make a short video to post on youtube about it? We should ask Craig Shergold, who was a childhood cancer survivor, to send out an email asking people to buy a copy. understanding sensitivity, dynamic range, contrast etc.
In my typical geeky fashion, I'm trying to wrap my head around all of the ramifications of adjusting sensitivity (ISO) on my camera. Please correct the errors in my understanding. In the simplest form, it is a measure of how many LSBs per photon (or tens, thousands or millions of photons). If the base is 10 photons, per LSB at ISO 100, 1,000 photons hitting a sensor site gives the value 100, at ISO 200, it'll give 200, and at 6,400 1,000 photons will cause the raw fill to read 6,400 for that sensor site. In a similar vein, if we have 14 bits of data, and at base ISO (100), 14 stops of dynamic range. That gives us a maximum data value of 16,384 which means at the above sensitivity, 163,840 photons will cause the sensor to read maximum value, and any more than that cause data to be clipped. If we then increase the gain by a factor of two, then at ISO 200, we are expressing 13 stops of dynamic range in 14 bits of data, 5 photons will cause an LSB worth of change in the data, but it will only take 8,192 photons to clip in the data path. Since the data width is constant, every time we double the sensitivity, we force ourselves to only use the lower, noisier, half of the signal. The benefit of this is that we can read that narrow band of the the sensor with more resolution so at ISO 12,800, rather than only having 7 bits of data for the lower 7 stops of dynamic range, we have 14 bits of data to work with. This is why using high ISOs give us more contrast. It seems to me that if we are shooting a low contrast situation, such as clouds on a grey sky, or with a mediocre, low contrast lens, we could compensate by using a higher ISO to spread the fewer stops of dynamic range in the input out over more bits of data, at the cost of more noise, because we're constraining ourselves to the lower, noisier portion of the signal. Re: Focus chart help, please
On 09/04/2011 8:27 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote: I can't help with the Kx, as I don';t have one, but I would strongly advise against using any of the focus charts out there in favour of adjusting the focus against a real world (and real world distance) object. Unless you are using a flat field lens, (you aren't) a focus chart is guaranteed to give a false front focus indication. Why is that? Haven't heard that before. I used a homemade chart to adjust all my lenses at a distance of six to eight feet, checking focus in the center of the lens. Seems to me that would be accurate. But I'm no expert at these things. It was one of the things that occurred to me when everyone on ForumsNeurotica were dumping all over the K5 because it had difficulty resolving correct focus in near darkness with very fast lenses. A couple of points to consider when using a focus chart, which for the purpose of discussion would be one similar to the famous Nikon D70 focus chart (view-able here in small size) http://pinterest.com/pin/4898728/ are: Is the chart absolutely perpendicular to the lens axis? If it isn't it will give a false read. This is easy to see, since unless the lens is decentered, the degree of misfortune should be the same on either side of the chart. So, the way to use one of these charts is to focus on the center line (in the case of Yvone Borques chart, the knife edge between black and white, but his chart is useless for technical reasons unrelated to lens curvature) and then read the degree of front focus in millimetres some distance from the point of AF. If the lens has field curvature, and most do (macro lenses and enlarger lenses tend to be flat field), then field curvature is introducing some error, and unless the degree of curvature is known, the user has no way of knowing exactly how much error is being introduced. I use a similar method to yours for dialing in lenses. I focus on an object (in my case a clock dial) at some distance from the camera using center point AF, and I then adjust AF by how well what I was focusing on is in focus. This is very different from using the center focus point for focus and then looking at something that would be in the region of one of the far side points. -- William Robb -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Please correct the errors in my understanding. In the simplest form, it is a measure of how many LSBs per photon (or tens, thousands or millions of photons). [calculations elided] Is this basically accurate? You're missing a few significant points. The ISO gain is an analog amplification stage, and so will itself introduce noise. The higher the gain, the more noise. The whole thing is an exercise in signal-to-noise ratio. Counting photons doesn't give you a whole extra bit of information if you increase the resolution of the counter, because you're summing inherently noisy signals. That means the signal- to-noise ratio only goes up about half as fast as you would expect; to get a factor of N increase in signal-to-noise ratio you need to increase the total count ny a factor of N squared. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Love the 40LTD for it's field of view, hate the lens for everything else so I decided that perhaps a 43 LTD was in my future, and probably sooner rather than later. Looked on Adorama's website and thought the price was OK, especially since the Canadian $ is a few cents more valuable than the Greenback, so I ordered one. And the day it arrived, I noticed that Adorama had raised the price a hundred and fifty bucks over what I paid. Somehow I luck out quite often on these things. Anyway, it seems like an OK lens.
