Semi-OT: Preparing photos to print on a color laser
I bought a color laser printer a while back to print business cards. The laser printer duplexes and I intend to print on 110# Ivory Card Stock. I can fit two of the cards on one sheet. My design is a two-sided, tri-fold card (3-1/2" x 6") with 3 small portraits on one side and a "fine-art" landscape on the other with room for the appropriate text along the bottom edge on both sides. It folds up to the size of a standard business card. I created an image template in Photoshop that I can import into my word processor. I figured out how to import the template twice so that the images on each side line up properly. I export the word processor document as a PDF that I can print directly from Acrobat Reader. I'm creating the PDF file on my laptop & transferring the PDF file to this computer that has the color laser printer using a thumb drive. Eventually I'll get my network transferred back here to Raleigh and will be able to print to the color laser directly from the laptop. In the meantime ... What I want to know is there anything I particularly need to do to the images themselves before saving them as a jpeg to import into my word processor? My first test run on regular paper looks pretty dark, with the shadows kind of blocked up. Would profiling the printer help since I'm not printing from Photoshop? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: GESO Jazz at the Gate
I started out shooting digital using manual white balance, got out of that habit because the AWB on the Canon was great... and the AWB on the istD in the variety of outside light one might encounter has worked well... (all the photos you have seen of mine in the past three months were shot using AWB and minor dickering in photoshop) and, of course, I post process. I was only shooting the music scene hoping to get something Dom could use but I wouldnt let him. after that, I was playing around at home with changing the white balance manually with the istd (remember, I've only had it since January) THe annoying thing is to change the ISo or the White Balance I have to turn the knob off of AV , change it, and then swithc back to shooting mode... slows one down a bit and sometimes I was forgetting and tried to shoot when the camera was on the ISP or WB button. I'll get used to it eventually but it doesn make one miss the LX LOL' anyway, it did teach me that using the correct WB setting INDOORS was important , especially in low light situations with the istD ann Bruce Walker wrote: Ann, I've found it best to select a manual WB. I usually have mine set to Cloudy or Daylight. Then you just select a more appropriate WB during PP. Sometimes I shoot something gray in the room (backs of many keyboards are good) so I can use the LR (ACR) magic eyedropper later. But if you can count the number of photons bouncing around the room with the fingers on one hand, it's time to take up a collection for a new camera body. I'm still waiting for my K-5 ship to come in. In the meantime, just enjoy the music, maybe take up pencil sketching. The lighting was from track lights meant to light the artwork in the loft. The light was low because they musicians were sweltering and the windows ahd to stay closed because of the neighborhood. wasnt fun... Dom's girlfriend had a flimsy tripod for video shooting... when she abandoned it I tried to use it...but it didn't help much anyway - between my instability and the digital noise I couldn't ever show them to you guys. ann Bruce Walker wrote: Thank you, Ann. Re: The Uncommon Adder
I disagree. Back in my days as a physics major and then as a navigator, I had a number of slide rules, in both the linear style and the circular style. None were designed to do addition (or subtraction). They could perform those operations only by indirect means, such as converting the problem first into one of division, or by using the L scale back and forth, and reading the result at the zero mark. I would never say that addition is easy on a slide rule; quite the contrary. I certainly dispute the statement " that's what they do best." Actually, adding on a slide rule is really easy - that's what they do best. The problem is that the example shown doesn't have linear scales (or, to be pedantic, it only appears to have one, and the cursor doesn't cover it). Re: OT - again, about rights
The thing about police (besides places that are trying to pass laws restricting photographing police) is with shooting video of them in states that require two-party notification before you record audio. You by filming implicitly give your consent, but the police are not giving consent and they can get you that way. The two-party rule is why you'll hear the "This call is being recorded for training, etc, etc" when you call some companies. That is a notification that you are being recorded, and if you continue on the line, you are consenting to the recording. Re: GESO Jazz at the Gate
Ann, I've found it best to select a manual WB. Come on! Let's see 'em. Now - can anyone suggest a better title for the gallery? As most are aware, the idea of submitting more than one photo for consideration for the Annual was to give the editors scope to select images that best fitted the context and layout of the Album. This means that images not included in the Annual were probably of similar quality to those that were included. So, I don't think "refuses" is an accurate title, but my feeble brain can't come up with anything better. Here is a link to the galleries: http://liberman-family.com/boris/pics/Books/index.html The photos are in the same order as they appear in the book. Thus each pair of photos is a spread. Accidentally one of the photos of Galia's book is obviously heavily processed (by me). That's my mistake, really. As you can see, most of these are PESOs, PUGs and some of them appeared in PDML Annual books by Mark. But I should say that in print they look better than on the screen. Re: OT - again, about rights
In the US, if you are in a place open to the general public, and no prior restrictions were put in place as a condition of your admission, you can generally make non-commercial use of your own images, videos, etc. There are some restrictions (you aren't allowed to photograph the TSA screeners at the airport, for example), but that's the general rule. Mind you, you'll get a whole lot of grief if you try to take pictures in a public area showing small children at play. And some jurisdictions try to claim it's an offence to take pictures of the Police if they don't want you to. While as far as I know no such legislation has stood up to a legal challenge, you can end up with a whole lot of grief if you insist. More relevant to your case, perhaps, might be the example of seasonal displays at shopping malls (Santa's Grotto, the Easter Bunny, etc.). There will usually be explicit notices stating that using your own camera is prohibited. While I'm not sure that they could actually do anything to prevent you (other than ask you to leave), I'd generally recommend that one should comply with such requests. But in the absence of such a notice, there's not a lot they can do a posteori. > I am talking about USA, where all the action is happening described > in the previous message. > > Igor > > Tue May 3 16:19:51 EDT 2011 > John Francis wrote: > > > It depends on the legal system that has jurisdiction. > > > > Just look at the issues that Google is having with StreetView; > > there's no uniformity in what they are or are not allowed to > > do - it has to be separately adjudicated in each country. > > > -- > PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List > PDML@pdml.net > http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow > the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Is that acceptable? If not, you'll have to pick one, and I'll save the other for the PDML Photo Annual 2011 Refuses Refuses... - Toralf Image constraints are the same as for the monthly PUGs: * Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels * Max file size: 300k The cut off date for submissions will be about 17 May. Re: OT - again, about rights
Larry, I am interested in the legal aspect of the discussed situation: Does the subject of a video, if he/she didn't object/restrict the recording as it was happening openly, have a right to make any demands with respect to the non-commercial "distribution" of the video (if no money is made from that/charged). As for the attitude of different instructors, - this is a completely separate issue. My take on it is that the best instructors do not fear their short (usually without any explanations) class summaries to be posted. Brief class summaries do not replace class participation and instructions; nor they compete with the instructional videos sold by the instructors. These videos are a great advertisement for the events and instructors Several dance instructors thanked me for posting videos of their demonstrations on Youtube. Those instructors who seriously think that their class can be replaced with a short, typically 1-2 min, summary, - are not worth my time for going to their lessons. Instructors often make money off of selling instructional videos, and don't want other videos to wipe out the market for those. If they get a lot of grief over one case like this, they may just not let people videotape them after classes at all in the future. The best solution would be to try to have a reasonable discussion with them, find out their motivations for taking the video down and see whether it would really work towards their ultimate goals. It's too bad that you aren't on FB, this would be a great question for Bug Brockway's Dance Question of the Day. > -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

OT - again, about rights
Dear All, We discussed the legal aspects of using photos of the people in various cases. Now, I am trying to see how that applies to a video. I am especially interested in hearing opinion of the people who have dealt with similar issues. A specific situation is as follows: 1. an event is open to public and includes dance classes; 2. the rules of the event do not forbid to take videos; 3. at the end of a dance class, the instructors offer everybody who wants to take a video of a short summary (without stating any restrictions on the use). In this situation, what do you think, - can the people (instructors) appearing in the video restrict the use of the videos taken at a later point? In particular, - do they have a right to demand that the video is not posted publically (e.g. on Youtube) - retroactively? Thank you in advance for your thoughts on this issue.
