Low-light photography is so easy these days. When I was a kid we had
to fling individual photons at the Tri-X and try for an even grain
pattern. -T

No chance I could afford such a trip now, unless I sold all my cameras
and had all my credit cards paid off. Then what would be the point of
going? I have followed it on maps from Liverpool to Utah and
through France and Germany. Even have a list of directions on how to get
from Texas to the last place he was stationed. Hardest part was finding a
train to cross the Atlantic.

Haven't been in Europe since 1974 while working as a contracted
photographer who was supposed to allow planes full of tourists to leave
their cameras at home. We built up a library of stock photos of the
places and monuments that each type of tour would visit as part of the
group, covering sunny, cloudy, and rainy days which would be the basis of
each photo album we would pre-sell them. Then I was at the disposal of
anyone who had bought the album beforehand, or anyone I could sell the
concept to as we went along, to photograph them in front of attractions,
eating at a table, or dancing the night away, sober or drunk. Those were
then overnighted back to Massachusetts for processing the night before
they group got back on their plane to return. I would have already met
the group arriving at the airport that morning, then seen my last group
off (same plane, same gate). The random shots were interspersed with the
stock shots at appropriate places, and were ready for them to pick up as
they deplaned in Boston.

It was quite a gig. I was young and thin, dapper in my light beige rough
weave sports coat to which I had added epaulettes of similar weight
material but in a psychedelic pattern of bright colors, popular at the
time, so my damn Pentaxes and camera bag would stop falling off,
interrupting my concentration on the subject at hand, usually the just
divorced daughters who came with their mothers to brighten their lives
after such a tragic event. Like I said, quite a fine gig for a 29 year
old who was getting over his first divorce two years prior.

Very nice. Does the snow sparkle when seeing the original print? I'm
guessing not because of the sun angle. Probably only in the area where the
highlights seem blown.

I've only printed this on matte paper which subdues any sparkle that would
be apparent. From the histogram, only very small slivers of the snow is
blown out, mainly that piled up in front of the houses and atop some of the
doors & awnings.

I think it's a gift you were able to get this without footprints or tracks.
I then assume these are summer beach cottages, not heated (snow on roofs)
and unoccupied. How far did you have to trudge?

Yep these are beach cottages and I was shooting from the main road that runs
perpendicular to the row of houses. At the end of the row is the Atlantic
Ocean. We were snowed in for several days & this was the first day we could
get out & drive around, as I passed these houses my wife spotted this scene
& insisted I back up & shoot it. I was probably 10 feet from my vehicle.

Those three brands might have been marginalised by the rise of auto
exposure, but they managed to hang on for most of the seventies,
almost up to AF in SLRs. As I recall, manual exposure was considered
normal at that time. Using AE was practically an admission of
incompetence or laziness, so the paradigm shift from manual metering
to auto exposure was fairly gradual.

But AF was introduced in fixed lens compacts in 1977, and the the
first external AF systems like Pentax's ME-F followed closely (and
wasn't there some sort of kludged up AF in the Canon FD line?). That
signalled a rush for the exits. These companies raised the white flag
at that time, perhaps realising they weren't ready for another big
investment in new tech. Konica didn't transition to AF, either, but
at least they didn't fold up. Cosina survived by becoming an
outsourcing supplier while its own branded products moved into the
boutique category. Chinon dissapeared from Western eyes but was doing
something interesting with electronics, enough for Kodak to buy them
out and run them to this day as a subsidiery.

Older manufacturing techniques probably supported lower outputs as
well. Modern manufacturing demands higher volumes therefore supports
fewer brands.

I'd overlooked the rise of fixed lens compacts. Getting first use of
AF boosted sales of compacts at the cost of SLRs, but getting zoom
lenses was an even bigger deal. A lot of camera-buyers could now be
satisfied with a fixed lens camera, so one of the big advantages of
SLRs at the time, interchangeable lenses, was neutralised.

Can't comment about 35mm Mamiyas, but I always considered RB67s to be
pigs of cameras to use, and the lenses had horrible veiling flare.

Yashica never got AF and launched its last model in 1986. As an
amateur targeted camera it couldn't maintain viable sales without AF.
Contax survived longer because AF wasn't a priority in most
professionals' choice of camera in those times. Similarly, Olympus
kept upgrading its pro OM series, finishing with the last OM4Ti being
made in 2002. Even companies that embraced AF kept some manual focus
pro grade cameras in their catalogues long after the introduction of
AF. Witness the Pentax LX and Nikon F3 and FM-3A, which stayed in
production beyond 2000. Meanwhile Leicaflexes continued their steady
trickle out of the factory (there'll always be orthodontists). But
there weren't enough rich nonconformists to save ALPA, whose final
Swiss model launched in 1976. ALPA's Chinon-made models, being
incompatible with Swiss-made models and too cheap to interest their
old customers, saw it fade away almost un-noticed in the eighties.
Rollei blundered through in fits and starts, but it was inept
management and a failure to exercise good quality control at their
offshore factory in SIngapore that killed their reputation and finally
them, not misconceived products or paradigm shifts.

EVFs will improve without a doubt. Reflex viewfinders are past their
peak, they were better in 1980 than they are in in 2011. There's too
much information being overlayed on and around the picture-composing
area. At least with an EVF you can customise the view, or strip it
away to a naked view of just the image with no information.

Fuji's hybrid finder is interesting but needs more work to get issues
like angle of view and eye relief sorted. (from what I've heard, not
hands-on experience).

Optical viewfinders are again becoming popular because AF is so
reliable you don't need to see focus in many circumstances. Face
recognition works well to grab focus on any people in the frame,
particularly when there's just one person in the frame.

My beef with modern cameras is that the three vital pieces of
information that I want to see instantly and instinctively are buried
in a sea of minor information. Sensitivity, aperture and shutter
speed! 98% of the time thats all I want to see. I want to look at
the top of the camera, without having to raise it to my eye or turn on
the rear LCD, and see those three basic settings, like photographers
have done for decades upon decades. OK, so your premium cameras with
top deck LCDs do this, but they're an exception and bec

Doesn't work with AOL's built-in IE browser (which is some older and off

Works fine in the latest Firefox.

Nice gallery! But, frankly, I have never worried about the below. ;-)

I am now tempted to try for a self-portrait, one that hides as much of me
as possible, of course. I see some others did the same, so I would be in
good company.

OK - thanks Bob.

It's a bit odd. Presumably you've been able to view PUG galleries in
the past so I'm not sure what's changed that would case the current
problem.

light.

A couple of things to try.

Could you try this link to load the gallery direct from its subfolder:

http://pug.komkon.org/11sep/index.html

And could you try the previous gallery from this link:

2011-09-09 Thread Brian Walters
Bob, Fernando.

Are you (or anyone else) still having the connection problem? If so,
what browser(s) are you using?

One of the differences with this gallery is that some of the images have
spaces in the file names. I usually remove them because some browsers
seem to have problems when there are spaces in the names, but I forgot
this time. However, that shouldn't stop the main thumbnail page from
loading.

I might have posted this image before, but I post it now to show an image that
was awarded second place in the color category at a recent local gallery show.
Around 150 images were entered in B+W and color category.

I specifically entered this show since it was being judged by Monte Nagler, a
student of Ansel and a nationally know photographer.

Very nice. Does the snow sparkle when seeing the original print? I'm guessing
not because of the sun angle. Probably only in the area where the highlights
seem blown.

I think it's a gift you were able to get this without footprints or tracks. I
then assume these are summer beach cottages, not heated (snow on roofs) and
unoccupied. How far did you have to trudge?

No chance I could afford such a trip now, unless I sold all my cameras and had
all my credit cards paid off. Then what would be the point of going?
I have followed it on maps from Liverpool to Utah and through France and
Germany. Even have a list of directions on how to get from Texas to the last
place he was stationed. Hardest part was finding a train to cross the Atlantic.

Haven't been in Europe since 1974 while working as a contracted photographer
who was supposed to allow planes full of tourists to leave their cameras at
home. We built up a library of stock photos of the places and monuments that
each type of tour would visit as part of the group, covering sunny, cloudy, and
rainy days which would be the basis of each photo album we would pre-sell them.
Then I was at the disposal of anyone who had bought the album beforehand, or
anyone I could sell the concept to as we went along, to photograph them in
front of attractions, eating at a table, or dancing the night away, sober or
drunk. Those were then overnighted back to Massachusetts for processing the
night before they group got back on their plane to return. I would have already
met the group arriving at the airport that morning, then seen my last group off
(same plane, same gate). The random shots were interspersed with the stock
shots at appropriate places, and were ready for them to pick up as they
deplaned in Boston.

It was quite a gig. I was young and thin, dapper in my light beige rough weave
sports coat to which I had added epaulettes of similar weight material but in a
psychedelic pattern of bright colors, popular at the time, so my damn Pentaxes
and camera bag would stop falling off, interrupting my concentration on the
subject at hand, usually the just divorced daughters who came with their
mothers to brighten their lives after such a tragic event. Like I said, quite a
fine gig for a 29 year old who was getting over his first divorce two years
prior.

Yum.

Actually only "in country" for 4 hours when I rode with the COD to deliver
something to someone (wink-wink) in Saigon. Landed at Tan Son Nhut and hung
out, then back to the USS Bon Homme Richard on Dixie station. Don't know what
the package was, but it seemed important. Perhaps some film that had greater
priority than the usual daily trip. I was trying to stay qualified so I'd get
my flight pay every month, but was unable to catch another ride until we went
home to NAS Miramar, now a Marine base. No longer Top Gun school. Sniff. ;-(
Spent 10 months on the high seas! :-)

What base did you belong to?

Wow. Not what I had expected.

Great composition and very dramatic. I like the subdued light and
subtle colors. The rows of cottages form a strong diagonal that
focuses my attention on the snow drifts and leads my eye to the dark
and forbidding sky. A real prize winner, that's for certain.

Never heard it called white space. I am familiar with negative space.

In landscape photography, blank sky is something to be avoided/minimized.
In this particular image I felt it was something to be minimized.

I call it white space, which is more of a graphic design term. In
art/composition it is usually called "negative space". It's not
something I came up with.
: )
The negative space (sky) in the building photo that started this
thread helps to make the building height look more imposing than it
would if it was cropped out (IMHO).

Re: interesting trends...

2011-09-09 Thread P. J. Alling
The biggest advantage in mirror-less cameras is manufacturing.
Precision hand assembly is minimized, (as opposed to precision machine
manufacturing), so the cameras are less expensive to build. (Front
engine automobiles are the same thing. Manufacturing is simplified, but
not much else). However once the public is convinced that something is
superior. then reality has little impact, and if the new product is good
enough, that's all that matters.

It's funny really, because some of the new m43 lenses are really pretty
poor performers by some traditional measures, distortion in particular.
But clever programming either in the camera firmware or the raw
converter hides this from even the most sophisticated user, and most
users aren't that sophisticated.

I found this quote quite revealing,
" 'Mirrorless cameras are a threat,' said David Rubenstein, a
Tokyo-based analyst at MF Global FXA Securities Ltd"

I guess they would be a threat to companies that choose to oppose the
trend rather than embrace it.

Some observations:

Non adoption of autofocus cut the SLR market from perhaps twenty or
more brands in the sixties and early seventies to less than ten.
(Topcon, anyone? Or Miranda? Yashica? Petri?) Contax and Olympus
both flubbed their AF implimentations, but Olympus redeemed itself
with a confident early digital program.

Topcon, Miranda and Petri were gone long before AF came about. They left
about the same time auto exposure came along.
You may as well toss Mamiya in there as well, with their lamentable 35mm SLR
attempts.
Yashica and Contax were one and the same at the time of AF, both were owned
by Kyocera.

My prediction is that within five years the only DSLRs will be a few
premium and professional models, perhaps one from each surviving major
player.

I also predict that within ten years their won't be DSLRs in the 4/3
to 135 range.

This was longer than I thought it'd be, so thanks for reading.

EVF type cameras are going to happen, whether we want or like them or not.
They cost less to produce, which makes them attractive to manufacturers, and
they are the newest thing, which makes them attractive to marketers and
people who buy based on hype rather than function.
My only hope is that they can make a decent EVF (they are still crap) before
the choice of optical viewfinder is taken away from us entirely.

I like the sound of that explanation. While there's only a single

I mustn't grumble. I would have liked more information on the
workflow and the actual colouring medium used for paper rather than

Diid anyone notice the addressing of this postcard. It's a sign of

OK. I'll play!

I often state the obvious because, the obvious often goes overlooked.
If that were not true, the state of affairs on Planet Earth would be
in far better shape at the moment.

The weight of a Pentax 80-200/2.8 is 3.32 lbs.

The weight of a Pentax 80-200/4 is 1.35 lbs.

The weight of a Sony 18-200/3.5 is 1.15 lbs.

Given that the difference in the body weights quoted between the
example DSLR and a NEX is only 12 ounces (.75 lbs.), I think the Sony
wins *in that strict measure*.

Sony (I believe) started the E-series lens line for video cameras.
They're now basically offering the same line for both the NEX's and a
video camera line. That makes sense fiscally, as one doesn't need to
develop an entire new manufacturing line and supply chain for the NEX
lenses vs. the video camera lenses.

I'm willing to forgive a little 'proportional disparity' (the E-series
18 - 200 for example) for the sake of 'total system portability' (my
new acronym TSP).

I detect, as I write, that your issue may largely be with using *DSLR
Ienses* on the NEX. I pretty much agree. I don't see the real
advantage of mounting DSLR lenses on a small body camera, other than
the fact that presumably one already owns the lens. The loss of AF and
other possible functions would pretty much rule it out for me.

It would be cool if Sony could develop an external lens that had the
18-200 (or thereabouts) range that was only .5 - 3 inch long,
essentially a very compact lens that was like the P&S camera lenses,
yet external. Not knowing enough about technical lens design and
optics though, I'm willing to bet that with the Sony E-series lenses,
they're getting a good compromise between quality, and cost vs, the
creation of a separate lens line.

Yet I have never seen anything quite as retarded. It is a little

If you bought the Q, you wanted a small camera. If you mount anything

then your camera is no longer small.

Probably Marshall's Retouching Oils.

http://www.reuels.com/reuels/Marshalls_Photo_Retouch_Photo_Tinting_Sets.html

Were Marshall's already in business in 1912, the postmark date on
Ann's postcard? I can't find any history of them at all.

Also, you should look at the postcard at 200% or more and you'll see
that the colouring is very sloppily applied and has bled or blotted
into the print. Remember that this isn't fine art, it's a cheap
postcard (or it was when it was new, anyway). The blotting and the
cheapness makes me think oils are an unlikely colouring medium because
it is "necessary to size the print first to prevent absorption of the
colours into the paper", if Wikipedia is to be trusted:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand-colouring_of_photographs

On the other hand, I've never retouched with oils, only dyes and
waxes. The waxes I used could leave a glossy finish because after
retouching you would apply a little heat (hot breath was usually
enough) to release the pigment into the emulsion, after which the
residual wax could be buffed away. But the postcard looks like it
was coloured with a wet medium (because of the bleeding), ruling out
wax I think.

I'm interested to learn if a high glaze can be maintained after
colouring with oils, because Ann remarked that the postcard was "very
glossy". Do the oils themselves dry glossy? Can they be buffed?

It could have been varnished, but I think unmounted paper, even if
double weight, varnished in 1912 would be showing cracks by now.

Dye or ink wash is still my guess, because they would penetrate well
into the emulsion and allow the print to be glazed after retouching.
I'm not certain that would be possible with oil or watercolour
retouching because they are surface treatments.

I'm not married to these ideas, so I'm willing to be proven mistaken.

I don't know the complete history of the company, but they've been
around quite a while. I believe they must have had competitors back in
the hey-day of hand tinting.

My instructor characterized them as the "only one left" in the business
today.

The colors came in several styles. There was the oil paint in a tube,
some waxy paints (dyes?) in little pots, and I've seen Marshall's colors
as pencils at one of the local camera stores. We only did the paints in
the tubes & the paints in the pots.

We didn't spend a whole lot of time on it, barely an introduction to the
possibilities.

Our instructor specified "glossy" prints for the lesson. I expect how
glossy the result is depends on how glossy the print that was started
with. My first print came a lab that had run out of glossy paper, so I
had it printed on Luster paper. My color results weren't as bright as
some of the other students, but that could be because I didn't use
enough color.

I expect there were varying levels of quality in the application.
Something like this that was mass produced, the "painter" probably had a
production quota and wasn't allowed to spend more than a minute on the
card.

I just tested the gallery on several browsers (FF5, IE9, Chrome, Safari
