Re: OT: FILM shot wins Pop Photo contest

2011-12-26 Thread Paul Ewins
Actually a lot of the newer lenses don't get much in the way of extra coverage
as they are stopped down wheras some of the older designs get a huge amount.
The difficulty is defining coverage, since a lot of the older lenses get very
soft at the edges. In some cases older examples of the same design will have
more coverage than newer ones since the manufacturers have tweaked them to
reduce the image circle so that the edges don't get too soft. If you are
contact printing from an ULF neg, say 12x20, then you really don't need much
resolution but if you are doing mural prints from 4x5 the you will want it to
be bleedingly sharp across the entire neg. The 8x10 and ULF guys will often
distinguish between the area that is illuminated and the area that is covered,
with coverage being a subjective measurement based on the photographer's own
requirements for sharpness. The phrase YMMV gets used a lot in discussions of
LF lenses.

I think all lenses do get an increased image circle as it is stooped
down. Generally this is only important to the large format user who
depends on a large image circle to allow the use of camera movements.
Often, in order to cover the entire format when using significant tilt

stopped down to secure coverage of the corners of the film

Re: OT: FILM shot wins Pop Photo contest

2011-12-26 Thread Darren Addy
I should add that FOV is really only a perfect comparison to use when
comparing similar ratio rectangles (or other shape). It's not just a
function of the lens but the image circle "crop".

With that in mind some adjustment would be needed to strictly compare
a 4x5 (or similar ration 8x10) view camera lens FOV with a 24x36mm
35mm frame (which would need to be 24x30mm to be a straight-across
comparison).

With regard to the 35mm lenses, yes, the Pentax Forums lens database

I don't know the answer to your question. But I am curious about one thing in
your note - when others talk about FOV, I have always visualized the horizontal
coverage as the issue. I just looked at Wikipedia for FOV info and they point
out that (of course!) you can measure the FOV horizontally, vertically, or
diagonally. I am curious why you use the diagonal in this case. Did the specs
of the lens you are referring to explicitly refer to diagonal FOV?

FYI: Class 10 SDHC cards - some informal tests

2011-12-26 Thread Igor Roshchin

Hello All!

I hope you had/ are having a merry Christmas (or as they called it in
Futurama "Ex-Mas" :-) ), sweet Hanukkah, and are about to have Happy New
Year!

I just came across some tests for the 16 GB Class SDHC Cards by
Transcend, - posted on Amazon. Since it is a recurring topic,
I thought I'd share this finding with you:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B002WE4HE2/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_2?ie=UTF8&index=2

Notice, that the tests show card-to-card and test-to-test variations.

I was able to find one such test for Sandisk Extreme 16 GB:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B002HFER6O/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_1?ie=UTF8&index=1
It doesn't seem to stand up to the promise of 30 MB/s.

By the way, does anybody know the difference between Sandisk Extreme SDHC
"HD Video" card, and Sandisk Extreme SDHC with the same Class 10 and
30 MB/s rating but without "HD Video" label?
Are they optimized differently, or is it just a marketing ploy?

Additionally, I am confused to see "Class 6" and "30 MB/s" on the same
card:
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-Performance-SDSDX3-016G-Package/dp/B003EGBHHW/
Sandisk's website has the same images for "Extreme" cards for "Camera",
"Advanced Camera", and "Camcorder" cards, and no explanation about the
differences.
I remember that I was looking into this questions previously, but
I don't remember if I found any clear answer.. probably not..

Re: OT: FILM shot wins Pop Photo contest

2011-12-26 Thread Darren Addy
Learned something today. Never even heard of plasmats before.

That (winning) shot looks FAR wider (to my eyes) than a 24mm on a 35mm
film camera.
I was looking at the specs and comparing the field of view it gives to
the equiv. focal length with similar field of view on a 35mm.
Not sure if that's the proper way to compare apples and oranges, but
when the lens specs say 105 degree "maximum coverage" I'm guessing
that would be most like the "diagonal FOV" on a 35mm lens.

The diagonal FOV on a 24mm Takumar lens is only 84 degrees, 35mm full frame.
The diagonal FOV on a 20mm Takumar lens is only 94 degrees, 35mm full frame
The diagonal FOV on a 15mm Takumar lens is 111 degrees, 35mm full frame.

So extrapolating, it looks like the FOV would be similar to an 18mm
lens on a 35mm full frame.

If that's not the proper way to look at it, I'd welcome a correction.

how about some wider shots to help put the excellent photos in context?

You know it's working 'cause you can see the hubs go round Cotty.

Couldn't do that with 8-track! :-)

My reel to reel is like a big ol' cassette machine. You can see it working too.
  :-)

Actually, I use the shotgun on the camera, and a small Sony stereo mic (that is
too hot) that I dangle below the camera, recording to a Sony 707 Mini-Disc
recorder where I can control the volume somewhat.

Synching is not a terrible problem as long as you make a visual and audible
mark at the beginning of each scene and use yor iMac to put it all together. As
you know, if you keep the scenes short, synch doesn't have much chance to get
noticibly off. I will be using my Sony 8-channel board and mini-disc recorder
to get the audio down to 2 or 4 tracks, depending. I've only practiced so far,
but I will be recording 40-60 hours in January and March, which I'll be editing
down to 2 hours for distribution to all my McAllister relatives from Texas west
to the coast.

starting from scratch with InDesign for a non-trivial project is a worst-case

after this to see behind some of the issues you encountered

sorry i didn't have time to look it over earlier; i looked at version 4 and
it's a pleasing layout; the juxtapositions are a little corny at times, but
they also illustrate your thought process in a very direct way, so you've
succeeded in putting yourself into the book and had fun ... and not bad for a
first InDesign job

technical notes: i worry about the bleed — you need to actually extend
backgrounds and photos beyond the margin to get a bleed to work, and i can't
tell that you've done that; if you have, some of your text may be too close to
the edge

i think i see different shades of black in the backgrounds, so maybe you've
tackled this, but use caution butting "blackish" areas of photos against a
black background — generally a "rich" black will bet better in such cases

I'm not sure that the D700 has that much better performance than the D7000,
unless you need wider angle.

The difference between the D700 and the K-5 is even less. The Nikon pro bodies
have an annoying ability to retain high prices, even on the used market. Even
so, if I were shopping for a D700, I'd probably wait a month or two until
there's a rush of people upgrading to the D800.

Even so, I'd probably go for the D800 if I could

Yes, it was the X-10. It was a casual snap, one of many taken when
trying to hopefully get one good one of a kitten. I actually like the
asymmetry but I would have liked a bit more of the head.

I do like this new class of high end compacts. I would like to try
the Q, but it was over $1000 to get the zoom version of the kit.

Same to you Walt.

I like the colour in the first one, especially that rusty grass.

Thanks, Brian. The color of the grass was what I liked about it, too.

The rendering of the second gives an attractive tonal range but I think
it's cropped a bit tight on the right.
I had the exact same concern and wondered if there might be a better way
to crop it. Unfortunately, that's all the room I have on the right side

This is an excellent idea. Two people with iPhones/whatever at left and
right halfway to the front, then the camera can roam at the front. Sync
up to a the drums at the start/whatever. Be interesting to see how far
the sync drifts over the course of a performance when viewed in a timeline.

Mount Rainier creates several almost every day. Sometimes it will wear

formed by strong updrafts acting upon moist air at lower altitudes,
causing the air to cool to its dew point as it reaches the mountaintop
