I'm toying with the idea of down sizing some of my digital gear,
mainly the Nikon D1 and the Pentax K-10D.

Looking at prices on the net, $150-175 for the D1 seems about average,
would include everything but lenses, i want those.

K-10D after looking at Henrys ebay page, prices seem between $200-295.
Would that be about right. Nothing on bh to compare with.

It depends on the sort of shooting you do, and how many of the features the K7
has the K-01 doesn't. If I only had one camera I'd much rather have a K-5 than
K-01. If you do most of your photography in good light, you probably wouldn't
get a lot of IQ improvement going to the K-01 sensor. If you do hand held, low
shutter speeds, you'll probably lose sharpness do to the shooting position. If
I were buying a camera this week in that price range, I'd probably look for a
K-r rather than K-01.

Also, Pentax seems to have a bit of difficulty with dot zero syndrome, where
there's usually a problem or two with the first releases of new technology. In
short, even if I were to buy a K-01 I'd wait a bit and let other people be the
guinea pigs, and maybe let the price drop a few bucks.

Re: For Ansel Adams birthday: All about Moonrisr Over

2012-02-21 Thread Tom C
 Date: Mon, 20 Feb 2012 19:34:08 -0600
 From: Darren Addy pixelsmi...@gmail.com

I have no idea whether Tom's comment was tongue-in-cheek or not, but
it goes to the heart of what I found fascinating about Ansel's comment
 - the ability to be a super-critical curator of our own photographic
work. Ansel Adams produced more negatives than even he could keep up
with, in terms of getting prints that both interested him and were up
 to his high standards.

It wasn't tongue-in-cheek. I can see what people like about the
image, there are numerous compositional elements to like, but overall
I don't find them pleasingly arranged. It's like some of the Beatles
music. In my opinion, much of it is superb, but there are occasional
songs that don't tickle my ear and that I never choose to listen to.

It's that way with all artists and art forms.

1) I dislike that the mooon is so close to center.
2) I feel that the composition is cramped at the edges of the town on
the left and right sides.
3) I get the sense that the image is slightly unlevel and slanted to
the right.

In our digital age, our ability to produce images (in big numbers)
probably far exceeds the time that most of us have to get the most out
of them via post-processing. So what do we do? Perhaps we show the
ones that appeal to us sans-post-processing (or at least a minimal
amount). I wonder how many of us will/would do with digital
post-processing what Ansel did with this image: continue to work to
better it for years after the image was created ?

I'd much prefer to go out and take new pictures than continue to
manipulate an existing image for years. To me that would be a sign
that maybe I was trying to make something out of something that wasn't
up to snuff.

Interestingly, Adams said this about the day the photo was taken:

I made a few passable negatives that day and had several exasperating
trials with subjects that would not bend to visualization. The most
discouraging effort was a rather handsome cottonwood stump near the
Chama River . I saw my desired image quite clearly, but due to
unmanageable intrusions and mergers of forms in the subject my efforts
finally foundered, and I decided it was time to return to Santa Fe .
It is hard to accept defeat, especially when a possible fine image is
concerned. But defeat comes occasionally to all photographers, as to
all politicians, and there is no use moaning about it.

Our individual tastes will decide whether we think that day ended with
a glaring success or a bit of a failure. I believe he fell victim to
the same failings with 'Moonrise'.

Like Ansel's mastery over the darkroom processes and materials, we
will no doubt grow in our mastery of the post-processing tools and
techniques given time. As we struggle to keep up with the backlog of
images we recently created, how many of us will go back and REwork a
favorite digital image created years in the past, to get the most out
 of it?

It depends on the image. I've scanned images taken 10/15 years ago and
have improved upon them. However, I find far more enjoyment in the
pursuit of new images than I do in the reworking of old ones. Some
think it's a small world, but it's a pretty big place when you
actually try to photograph it.

Much of this is a moot point, since so many of us produce work only
for screen: Flickr, etc. Translating our work to actual prints is
something that fewer people do (myself included).

The intent is the same however, regardless of the medium.

There is also something to be said for the Opposite of hyper-critical
curation: Sharing ones work that is not, even perhaps by our own
standards, top notch. (Particularly if one is seeking critique in an
effort to grow, rather than just receiving the kudos that we know we
 so richly deserve.)
 :)

Unfortunately I think far too much of that happens. It too often leads
to kudos for images that are not deserving and dupes the photographer
into believing they've succeeded where they did not.

To me, if one is serious about their photography (define serious),
they will grow in skill and judgement all most naturally. That image I
was ecstatic about 20 years ago... well I now see it's failings and
would not show it had I made that exposure today (or would adjust it).

Interesting topic.

We also couldn't really tell them exactly how to get there: Well, we have to
pick up a friend in Buffalo. No, she doesn't live there, she's from NYC,
visiting a friend in Buffalo. So anyway, after Buffalo we're driving to
Pittsburgh to meet this transplanted Englishman of Welsh heritage, and ~he~
knows how to get to GFM...

I can't imagine why they were suspicious.

I think they also couldn't imagine why Canadians would have to go down to the
US to do nature photography. They asked me that several times: Don't you guys
have photography courses up there?

Ah, yes, but there's only one PDML Central! didn't seem to give them much
comfort.

It's a deal they came up with in 2009 to keep property taxes from forcing
the Morton family having to sell the land for development. The Morton heirs
get to keep a concession to run the Grandfather Mountain Attraction, but
are no longer burdened with taxes on rest of the mountain.

Subtitles were hard to read sometimes, but what I got (not necessarily
in order):

1. smc PENTAX-DA 560mm f/5.6 will not cover full frame; that's why
it's DA, and not FA.

2. smc PENTAX-DA 50mm f/1.8 will not replace the smc PENTAX-FA 50mm f/1.4.

Side Note: He doesn't pronounce BOKEH the way I was told I'm supposed to
pronounce it because it's a Japanese word and that's the way 'THEY'
pronounce it in Japan. He pronounces it the way I was pronouncing it
before I was corrected. Go figure.

3. smc PENTAX-35mm f/2 will remain in production.
4. There will be no electronic viewfinder module for the K-01, but a
future firmware revision will make the O-GPS1 module usable with it. Not
clear if that's K-01 firmware or O-GPS1 firmware.
5. Pentax is working on secret stuff, but he can't say anything about
that 'cause it's SECRET.

Nice. I'm curious how you get the misty effect. It's almost like a
little wand lit with a green led that wander around the car waving next
to the ground, but I can see how it might be tough to get all the way
around the car with that level of coverage in two minutes.

The flame/smoke effect is created using some stuff called EL
(Electroluminescent) wire.

It was dragged along the ground while walking around the car twice.

It certainly looks like it is right next to the ground, but I can see
how that *could* be an optical illusion.

OT: What to see in southeastern Australia? (Melbourne/Sydney)

2012-02-21 Thread John Celio
I know there are a few Aussies here, so I hope you don't mind if I
pick your brains for a moment.

I'm going to be in Australia this coming May for work, and I'm taking
some time after that's done to do some traveling. The work stuff is in
Melbourne, and then I'll have lots of time on my own to do whatever I
want until my flight home takes off two weeks later from Sydney.

I'm planning on backpacking around, staying in hostels and such to
keep the costs down, so I'm trying to put together a list of things to
see and places to do some photography that are interesting but not too
touristy.

(Honestly, part of me wants to buy a cheap used bicycle and just bike
everywhere, but that may be unrealistic with all the crap I'll
probably have to lug around.)

Anyway! If you had two weeks to get from Melbourne to Sydney, no car
and no one else you had to worry about, where would you go? Also,
what's the weather like there in May?

Many thanks,
John

P.S.: This is my first time doing any sort of solo, low-cost traveling
like this, so any general traveling tips would be immensely
appreciated.

Re: OT: What to see in southeastern Australia? (Melbourne/Sydney)

2012-02-21 Thread Brian Walters

G'day John

May is a good time to visit Victoria and New South Wales. The weather
is generally excellent for travelling. Temperatures would be in the
high teens- low 20s (Celsius) in lowland/coastal areas - a bit cooler
if you get into the alpine areas but it wont be freezing. May is also
good because I'm fairly sure it's within the school term period for
both Vic and NSW, so accommodation shouldn't be a problem.

Melbourne to Sydney is about 880 km by the shortest route and about
1100 by the coast. I'm not sure I'd want to tackle that in two weeks
by bicycle but that's me...

Anyway I've done quite a bit of touring in Vic and NSW (and I'm sure
others have too) so I can probably suggest places to visit but first I
think you should decide how you want to get around because that will
pretty much determine what places are practical - you might be
restricted to defined coach/train routes.

As far as accommodation goes, there are backpackers hostels in most
major towns. Here's a link to check out:

http://www.yha.com.au/

Other cheap accommodation is available using on-site vans at caravan
parks, which are everywhere.

Cheers

Brian
