I've noticed more and more joggers here in London have taken to using the
cycle & bus lanes so that they don't have to negotiate pedestrians on busy
paths, and they play chicken with cyclists, often forcing them out of the
lane into other traffic.

Speaking as a pedestrian, jogger, cyclist, public transport user and
occasional driver, it really pisses me off. If the pavements are too
crowded, FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE TO JOG!!

I've just watched the first half hour of it and I'll watch the rest later,
simply because it's interested to see and hear HCB himself.

But that interviewer is dreadful. He talks to HCB in the patronising way a
child talks to a gaga grandparent, almost always finishing with closed
questions. There's no sense of an open conversation taking place between 2
intelligent people who share an interest, and the interviewer just seems to
want Cartier-Bresson to rehash stuff that he's said a million times before.

Cartier-Bresson's Frenchness and disdain for the conventions of TV seem to
be completely beyond the experience or understanding of the interviewer. And
he keeps trying to corner him into talking about his status, as if anyone
from a background like HCB's is going to sit there and say 'Yes, I'm the
greatest photographer of the age and an artist on a par with Matisse and
Picasso'.

Fur fecks' sake, what a wasted opportunity.

NiMH batteries on the K-5

2012-03-24 Thread SV Hovland
Hi.

I am lucky enough to have both K-7, K-5 and one battery grip. I have noticed
that when K-5 says the battery (six NiMH AA batteries) is empty and won't even
power on, my K-7 can still use these batteries for a long time before needing
charging.

After a fresh re-charge, I am probably able to get 50 images out of them on my
K-5. I have tried old Eneloops, new Eneloops and new Vartas and it's the same.

What is your experience with NiMH batteries on K-5? Should it really be a lot
worse than K-7?

I tried using NIMH with the battery grip on both the K-5 and K-7, but found it

Re: Glumness Reigns: My Tamron is Cactus

2012-03-24 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting Darren Addy :

It is described often as "CCD flare". I'm guessing that between the
little microlenses over the pixels on the sensor and the flat spot on
the back of the sensor you get a little light that bounces off the
sensor, and back off the flat lens element to effectively overexpose
that little circle.
So the effect may be more noticeable on some sensors rather than
others, meaning that you might see it on some cameras and not others.
It was never a problem (that I have seen reported) on film cameras.

The good news is that there is probably nothing newly wrong with your lens.

I suppose that's good news.

Checking out the link you mentioned in an earlier post, I think you're
right. It does seem to be a known problem with this lens on some (but
maybe not all?) digital SLRs.

The interesting thing is that I've used this lens almost exclusively
on my *istDS and looking back closely at those images, there's no
obvious indication of the 'hot spot'. The latest case that prompted
my post was using the lens on a K200D and I can't positively identify
any previous images taken with that lens/camera combination.

I'll fire up the DS tomorrow and see whether I can reproduce the
problem with that camera.

Another suggestion that was made was to use the lens with Tamron's
dedicated 2X adapter, which has a curved rear element. It might be
clutching at straws but I have one of those, so I'll give that a try
as well.

I switched the battery grip to use the standard camera battery.
Six AA's just don't seem to do the job, while the body battery lasts forever.

I don't care for the pose "Flame" chose for her lower body. Stiff and

Suggest you cut her off to just below the belt. Next, thoroughly saturate all

I doubt you're going for a natural look anyway. (?)

Can you afford a pro lab? I do all my own printing up to 16X20. I've found the
price for having these larger prints done (from CD's) significantly
less expensive than they once were. Example 16X20 'prox $35 these days. Had
been about twice that, back in the film days, when that often included a

Re: OT: Advice & recommendations on selling prints

2012-03-24 Thread Walt Gilbert
I'm planning to start relatively small -- not going over, say, 8x10 at
first. My main concern is that the prints look nice and are on
appropriate paper. Wally World seems to offer a range of services from
"Here's your picture" to "Give us a couple of extra days and then you
can have a glossy picture". I'm mostly looking to simply get prints that
are suitable for framing for the time being, and then stepping up to
gallery-type prints if/when I start producing work that justifies it and
there's any kind of demand for it.

As of now, my composition is such that I still do more cropping than I'd
like, and I'd hate to get a large print made only to discover that the
resolution is sub-par.

I didn't read to the end of your message. My bad. Great for an out of the

the concept and pose are excellent. It's the kind of attention getting shot you
see in fashion mag ads.

Why not invest in a decent printer? Printing is, to my mind, an essential part
of the photographic process and digital tools give you complete control. When
you leave the printing to someone else, they are free to alter your vision. You
can now get the superb Epson Stylus Photo R3000 for $599 at B&H, after
rebate. They still have the earlier R2880, which is nearly as good, lacking only
the auto-selecting of black cartridges for matte or glossy. Its $449.95 after
rebate. I paid nearly double for mine a couple of years ago. The R2000, which
performs best on glossy papers is $389 after rebate. All can print up to 13 x
19 borderless or 12 x 18 with a border. And they deliver superb prints.

I was unaware of the other meaning of the word "coot", so thanks Bruce... :-)

What Dan describes is exactly what drew me to this image. Glad you
guys saw that too. As to luck in exercise; I believe some luck drips
on anyone that cares to do exercise. Wildlife photography these days
is pretty much about rattling off a lot of frames around any moment
that looks potentially significant. You always have to review your
captures anyhow. To recognise an unsuspected keeper is half a victory.
Or half a failure, according to the mood of the day.

Re: PESO - Caterpillar

Thanks for viewing and commenting, all of you.
As said in the blog, this critter surprised us by parading our kitchen
table at breakfast. I transferred it to the twig and brought it into
the living room where I set up a black bag as background, and used the
sunlight through the window to light the scene. It was a very
educating experience to work under these almost-controlled conditions.
Because of the black background I eventually ended up doing shots at
-3 stops compensation to avoid highlight burnouts. I also learned how
fast a caterpillar can move, and highly recommend using high ISO for
this sort of photography. I used ISO 1600, and even at 1/500s I only
got a few shots without motion blur.

I have an HP Deskjet 3000, but haven't ever tried using it to print
images on the assumption that it's just not up to the task. In fact, I
haven't even bothered to buy any decent paper stock for it.

I suppose I could give it a whirl and see if it's "close enough for
government work" until I can get something better. I just hate to send
out an inferior print if I can offer the purchaser a better value --
even if it causes me some extra expense.

Do you suppose it would be worth the trouble to bother getting decent
paper for it?

Getting them made:  I've been very happy with www.theslideprinter.com--they

Thank you, Rick!

The prices there don't seem unreasonable, and I can factor the cost into
the price so that it doesn't end up being a setback. As I see it, if
someone wants a decent print of one of my photos, $8 - $12 isn't going
to be a deal-killer of a price difference.

Or am I wildly off the mark here?

As I mentioned in another thread, someone recently inquired about buying a

at the cost of a precious stop of light. It would be interesting to

I doubt that you will see the problem with most images you take with

I have an HP Deskjet 3000, but haven't ever tried using it to print
images on the assumption that it's just not up to the task. In fact, I
haven't even bothered to buy any decent paper stock for it.

I suppose I could give it a whirl and see if it's "close enough for
government work" until I can get something better. I just hate to send
out an inferior print if I can offer the purchaser a better value --
even if it causes me some extra expense.

Do you suppose it would be worth the trouble to bother getting decent

It's a bit disingenuous to promise people they can do stuff without
Photoshop only to later inform them (once they've purchased your book)
they have to learn an even less intuitive software program.

I read that more as "You can do this without having to spend $600."

I don't think the difficulty of figuring out how to use Photoshop is as

At a 1.7 GB downlaod, I think I'll pass.

The video for the 6 favorite features comes across like he's
reading bedtime stories to a 3 year old.

I don't know about the "new UI". One of my big complaints with
Windoze has always been they keep changing the interface, so that I
have to learn an all new one every time a newer version comes out.

That's one of the things I like about *nix machines. Just open up a
terminal and you always have a bash prompt, which doesn't change on
the whims of other people.

Put "%windir%\system32\cmd.exe" in to a shortcut on the desktop and
you can have a terminal in Windows as well. Not sure that it would
serve any practical purpose, but there you go...

I think they call the little strip next to the start button the start-up
bar?

Anyway, if you drag the shortcut there, you only have to click it once.
And set the shortcut properties to start in C:\.

Windows had a nice, easy to use interface that changed very little
from Windows 3 to Windows XP. And the software authors pretty much
stuck to a standard interface as well. It was as boring as bat shit,
but it worked.

Then MS decided that the start menu system that had worked well for
all that time was no longer good enough so they foisted the new
all-singing, all-dancing start menu on us in Vista and Win 7, which
meant we all had to waste time working out how the new system er
worked. I did that for a couple of days before I went Googling and
found 'Classic Shell', which gave me back my boring as bat shit
interface. Bliss!

I hear Windows 8 is changing the start menu yet again, which suggests
that the Vista/Windows7 interface wasn't as good as MS thought it was.
  But I already knew that.

I have Vista on my laptop and as much as possible I've told it to
configure as "Classic" so it looks as much like XP as I can get it to.

Unfortunately they're discontinued but when researching Matte papers I

the price of full set of inks for an 8 color printer. HP also used to
give, a 50 rebate with any inkjet printer, no matter what make returned
to them with proof of purchase of an HP Printer, moot point in this case
but I wasn't able to find the form for that.

It's an excellent printer for the price capable of producing 13x44"
prints. Once again unfortunately on delving a little deeper I found
that all of those low prices were more or less web zombies. The only
places that still have this printer in stock are Amazon which is selling
it for close to its original MRSP and a site which had me ROTFLMAO, with
an asking price of get this $.91.

I guess that they'll have that baby in stock for a long time.

How are ya liking your D800? Is it as I suspect, perfect for studio?

When I got my K-5 I tried using AAs in the battery grip while thr
main battery was charging (just to get the camera setup done, of
course :-)

With rechargeable NiMH batteries out of the grab pile, it wouldn't
even power on (which gave me a nasty moment ...). Trying with regular
alkaline batteries worked, though.

Based on that experience I've put a set of regular alkalines in the
battery sled, just in case. But with the regular camera battery,
and a second one in the battery grip, I don't think I'm all that
likely to need AAs as long as the main batteries start off charged;
that's enough for considerably more exposures than I'm likely to
make before I can get back to somewhere I can plug in the charger.

If you've got a Costco nearby, you might look into a membership. Their

As far as pricing, the school solution where I went to school was a

Re: OT: Advice & recommendations on selling prints

2012-03-24 Thread Walt Gilbert

Yeah, that strikes me as a tad steep.

I was hoping there was a service along the lines of Shutterfly that had
a good reputation and was relatively affordable. Because at this point,
all I really want is to get some decent prints made and be able to offer
them for sale. Dropping $150-$200 bucks on a printer right now just
isn't feasible while I'm trying to raise the cash for a K20D. But, if I
can farm out the printing to a decent service and get a decent value for
people who would like to have a print of any of my shots, I'd like to be
able to do that until I can get a good printer of my own.

If all they want is a 5x7 print for whatever reason, I figure the HP
Deskjet I have would probably do a decent enough job with good paper.
But, if someone wants an 8x10 or larger, I'd like to be able to offer
that to them somehow until I can get my hands on a printer that's
capable of handling it well. Unfortunately, for the time being at least,
getting the printer, ink and paper is completely off the table. So, I
have to go with a less appetizing alternative.

There are a couple of different Deskjet 8000 models. It might depend on
which one you have weather it's worth the try or not. IIRC the DeskJet
printers all lacked HP's PhotoREt technology which is their method for
creating Photo realistic output with inkjet printers, that's what set
them apart from the Photosmart printers. Since HP has discontinued most
of their semi dedicated consumer photo printers, maybe they're putting
the PhotoREt firmware into the some or all of the Deskjets now.

I suppose I could give it a whirl and see if it's "close enough for
government work" until I can get something better. I just hate to send

even if it causes me some extra expense.

Yeah, that occurred to me a few minutes ago, given the results I've

That works on Vista but MS removed that option on Win 7.

Those prices don't sound too bad at all. I can use the Sam's Club

That does sound like a good idea given that 4x6's are just a few pennies
per print. I guess there's really no huge rush in getting prints out to
people who want them, so an extra week or two probably wouldn't hurt if
it means making sure they get a good print for their money -- which

Beautiful, Dave. The shapes of the dress and the hair really go well.
And Tangerine Tango is the pantone colour of the year, but you probably
already knew that.

Re: OT: Advice & recommendations on selling prints

2012-03-24 Thread Paul Sorenson
I can confirm the quality of the R2000 prints. While Epson extols its glossy
print capabilities, I prefer matte papers and can attest to how great the
prints are on matte paper. Plus, it's nice not to have to change black ink when
shifting from matte to glossy. The R2000 also has wireless capabilities so you
can put it where you want without having to string cable around. With the
rebate it cost less than the R800 did eight years ago.

And.if you need something to calibrate your monitor, I have a Spyder 2
colorimeter you can have for the cost of shipping.

This is no time for empathy Steve.
I've shot 245 images in the past week as the weather is burning out the daffys.

I can't afford any problems with my K-5 right now.
I feel bad for Christine N (did you tell the K-5 that you loved
it???), but there are limits.

Nice images - II have some similar ones. I've spent some time in these islands

If youre going to use a third party for prints, I would
recommend you NOT direct ship the prints, you will need to
quality control them yourself before giving to a client.

Yeah, whether you're dealing with a local lab or an on-line lab, you
should have the prints come to you so you can inspect them before
delivering them to the client.

Re: Photoshop CS6 Beta

Quoting John Sessoms :

From: Brian Walters

That works on Vista but MS removed that option on Win 7.

I'm not sure it works all that well on Vista, but I've done what I could.

Your post also prompted me to Google for alternative shells/GUIs for
Windows 7. Didn't find anything really promising. Back in Windoze95
days, I had an OS/2 shell that made it look/feel (almost) like Warp.
