Re: GESO SF Blues Exchange
Thanks Frank, and Walt. One very nice thing about this weekend is that at times I felt that my dancing didn't actually suck. The fact that at many of those moments I had attractive ladies in my arms also improved my mood. I did not put nearly the energy into getting good photos of the bands that I did of the dancers. Plus, when the bands were playing, I often wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to dance to live music, rather than take photos. Hardly a week goes by without my taking at least some photos of musicians. Besides, the dancers were my friends and customers, rather than the musicians. Although, I have sort of become friends with the band that played Sunday, they really like the photos I got of them when they played at a dance a few months ago. However, they 150 or so miles from here, so I don't see them that often. There are a lot of interesting facets to dance photography. One is understanding that the dancers have very different goals than photographers. To a large extent, they just want photos that show themselves dancing, and are willing to forgive (or not even notice) a lot of technical flaws in the process. Another is that while they love having pictures of themselves, that isn't why they are there. They're there to dance, not to pose for photos. They also, in general, aren't willing to put up with strobes in order to get cleaner photos. I could go on at great length about how it helps to understand the music, to know when people will be doing something special, or when they'll stop moving for a moment. I could also go on about how important it is to vary your shutter speed to get some relatively sharp photos, and others that accentuate the blur from motion. And, of course, there is always the bit about waiting for the critical moment. But the truth is that there are so many technical challenges to shooting people moving in low light, just getting exposure and focus right better than half the time is beating the odds, and a significant portion of the time, I just click the shutter when the technical issues align, and worry about the critical moment later. I really hate to advocate spray, pray and delete as the way to get good photos, but it sometimes seems that my skills at throwing away photos are more important in dance photography than my skills at taking them. It was kind of fun shooting the dancing at the park on Sunday, where the trickiest lighting I had to worry about was backlight from the cloudy skies, so I just tried to have trees in the background, or get higher so I had pavement in the background. For sale Friday - Pentax K-7 with extras
Hi! Since I sincerely don't need the K-7, it is offered for sale. Included is/are?!: * K-7 (approx 15,000 shutter activations) * Installed and shimmed - Katz Eye (regular, not optibrite, no markings) focusing screen. There're some marks on the screen caused by its installation process. They don't appear to have any effect on anything. * 3rd party battery grip * Magnifying eye-cap. * Original battery, original focusing screen and original eye-cap. * Since my second K-5 was bought in US - you get to choose which power cable you want - either European/Israeli or American. * It will be shipped fully insured via EMS (the only express mail integrated in our local system). If you want the likes of FedEx or UPS - I will need to inquire as to the procedure as I am not familiar with these as a sender. * I will absorb the PayPal fees and shipping charges. Lowering the price to USD 600 (inclusive of everything). If you're interested but the price doesn't suit you - make me an offer. Thanks. I wouldn't take a DSLR to a wedding ceremony anymore. Then again I wouldn't take a DSLR to most places now for anything. If I did go to a wedding, I'd take my X10 which has become my go anywhere/ do anything camera. Its only weakness is at the long end of the bottle but for everything else (including fill in flash) it's continually astonishing me. The macro facility is simply superb. That said it's effectively a point and shoot and so I work within those limits - limits I wanted. If I did go to a wedding it would be the perfect companion for me. Big cameras mean big attention. The X10 is perfect for candids and I use it like that all the time. The viewfinder is very useful, but for covert shooting the rear LCD works well. I note of interest that a sensor-swap programme is about to commence and although I haven't been troubled by the white orbs I may well investigate that particular avenue of delight. -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche -- http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Fighting with the K-5
On 4/26/2012 03:21, Larry Colen wrote: All weekend long I felt like I was fighting with my K-5, rather than just using it. I suspect that a lot of my problems were with my inexpensive split prism focusing screen. At least the metering problems. When I put the 18-250 on the metering flat out didn't work. Even with faster glass, most of the metering indoors was 0.7-2.0 stops under, and not consistently either. Unfortunately, the lighting indoors tended to be rather uneven and I blew a lot of photos by not keeping a better eye on exposure. In general I find that K-7 works more consistently than K-5 in terms of focusing and metering reliability. But I have only one K-7 and only two K-5's so that it is not representative of anything. Larry, that focusing screen that I have in my manual focusing K-5 (ee-S from Canon) has the additional property of being completely uniformly blank. Thus it does not have any effect on metering. It has been reported by PentaxForums (I cannot confirm or disprove this 'cause I have no such lenses) that it works linearly with K and M mount lenses with stop down metering. It /seems/ somewhat brighter with bright glass than the stock screen and hence it may cause ever so slight underexposure which is a good thing in my book because my other K-5 is simply set to -0.7 Ev as a standard fix for its metering inaccuracy. Focusing tended to be a problem too. I ended up throwing away a lot of what would have been great photos because of poor focus. Poor autofocus is something I probably can't (accurately) blame on the focusing screen. There's no easy way, however, to see which blown focus shots were done with auto focus and which with manual focus. I tend to think (it is a matter of inductive conclusion that I cannot support with rigorous testing, 'cause I shoot I don't test t-shirt that I have) the center AF point is indeed the most precise one. So may be for AF you could use center point and then refocus. Given that this would cause some focusing mistakes, you might want to take slightly wider lens so as to allow you shorter refocusing movement and so as to plan for some cropping afterwards. HTH. Also one ofr the reasons i us my nikons more than Pentax, is the AF in these low light conditions is much better. Here is why: we were on a 21-day escorted tour of western Europe, the UK and Spain. We had two families with the Canon 60D. I was struggling with my K20D / FA AL 35mm f2 for interior shots - flash not allowed in many of the museums cathedrals - while the guys with their Canon 60Ds / 18-135 Kit lens were getting great results. I believe there is a setting on the 60D that allows you brilliant photos indoors w/o flash. I would vote for the 3rd one. It would be similar to the 2nd, but not over-tilted. While I am not a stickler to having all photos leveled, a bunch of Pisa poles are disturbing my eye. FS Friday: White K-x with White DAL 18-55mm
K-5 arrived today and battery is on its maiden charge, so my beloved Stormtrooper AKA NASA Edition White K-x kit is for sale. My feelings about the K-x are well-known. It is a terrific bang-for-the-buck camera and the IQ improvement over my K200D, especially at high ISOs is impressive. 9300 shutter actuations. Comes in original box, with caps, hood, etc. I didn't originally plan to buy a white K-x but I liked its distinctiveness and classy looks well enough that I would have purchased the K-5 in white, had it been available. These are going for $500-600 used on Amazon. See: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002OEBTD2/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8qid=1335540809sr=8-1condition=used Mine is priced to sell at $435 plus shipping. Most of my recent images were taken with this camera and it will be sent out with a freshly cleaned sensor. http://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/ Will be happy to ship worldwide (fast or cheap... your choice). Ann - If it comes down to a choice between the two images, I'd pick the first. I like the first one because it shows what the bridge is bridging, but I would prefer the spires to be vertically upright. I'm curious how you straightened it. Did you just rotate and crop or did you try to use the lens correction tools in PS or Lightroom? Re: PESO - Lensbaby 3G
Mark, I like the 2nd shot. As for the Lensbaby lenses, - I've tried to look at them a few times, and never got the sense of them. The first time when I got them in my hands was at a photo exhibit in San Diego in 2007. That was a weird experience. The lady that at the manufacturer's booth was not friendly at all. I've read about these lenses on the web prior to that, so I curiously asked her about what's cool about these lenses, and how they can be used. I remember that she measured me with her look, and then in a noticeably annoyed way started telling me something that was not very appealing (if at all). I didn't stick for long at that booth. To date, I stil do not know how I would use any of those (albeit, I haven't looked at the new models). [People at Pentax booth were much more friendly, answered all my questions about 18-250 zoom that was just about to come to the stores. That resulted in me buying that lens shortly after (which got a good work as an all-in-one-travel-light lens - to complement 50/1.4).] Igor On Thu, Apr 26, 2012 at 10:55 PM, Mark C pdml-mark at charter.net wrote: My new used K mount Lensbaby 3Gf arrived today and I got my boy Jazz to pose for a few pics - I love it, much easier to use (for me) than the Lensbaby Muse. The second is immensely more pleasing to my eye. Re: PESO Rawrrrr!
From: Walt Gilbert I'm in a bit of a sticky situation in that regard, living in a town of about 350 people, and the biggest town within reasonable driving distance being about 35,000 (Paducah, Kentucky). Though, despite the lack of a big population center, I don't really have that much trouble finding people to pose for me. In fact, I constantly have people asking me if I'll take pictures of their daughters/sons/grandkids, etc. The biggest challenge is getting people to follow up after they ask me. I've come to the conclusion that, for a lot of people, when they find out you're a photographer, they just like to say things like that as a means of small-talk. Normally, when someone asks me to do something like that, I stipulate that I'm not by any means a pro photographer with a studio and lighting and backdrops. At that point, they say, Oh, I don't care about that! I'm sure you'd do a great job! Then, they never bother contacting me about it. Which is really OK with me, to be honest. Whenever I try to talk someone into posing for me (like the young lady I mentioned), I'm looking to take very casual portraits. I manage to get decent results whenever I do it completely impromptu -- even when they're shy or reluctant. I just try to catch them in unguarded moments. (I'm not quite sure I'd be all that comfortable in a formal sitting situation, myself.) I guess my approach could be best described as getting someone to simply be somewhere (or tell me where they're going to be), let them just do what they do and be who they are, and tell them to just try to ignore me -- or at least pretend I'm not there. That's why I like to shoot at gatherings and events. I just love capturing candid moments, and I'm pretty good at putting people at ease once I've had a chance to mingle and blend in. -- Walt One thing that may be hurting you is when you tell people you're not any good (which is what your stipulations are doing), they'll believe you. When someone asks you if you can take photos of their kids/grand-kids, just say yes. The only thing you need them to think about is when where you're going to do the shoot. Get a commitment on that. You don't need a studio for informal portraits. Find some public locations that substitute for those studio backgrounds you don't have use the tools you *do* have. All you need is a neutral background you can throw out of focus and skylight. Earth tones ROCK! Add a little fill flash and you're good to go for informal portraits. As you build your portfolio, you build your professionalism, and moreover build your reputation for professionalism. That might help reassure the shy young lady that you're not just clown with a camera trying to hit on her. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO Rawrrrr!
Walt, MM lists 7 young ladies who live within 25 miles of Paduca, Kentucky who will work TFP (ie trade-for-photo). All you need to do is come up with an idea for a shoot, eg theme, location, wardrobe, any props, and approach these folks with your shoot description. If they think your shots will benefit their portfolio they'll agree to it. Be prepared to show some of your best work (edit brutally) and they better have people in them. :-) Here's one who is a fitness and bikini model: http://www.modelmayhem.com/1648238 If you read her resume it says some experience. If you examine her portfolio you see that she's had one fitness set of pro-level shots done and a whole lot of snapshots. She needs more good shots for her portfolio. She's a good candidate to approach. She may want gas-money if it's a fairly long drive to the location. On a first encounter they'll likely want to bring a friend. You can put the friend to work holding a reflector or helping keep the model's hair tidy. Anyways, good luck! Re: PESO Rawrrrr!
Fun to shoot? Yes, and no. She's a serious model-in-training. She is dedicated and very hard-working. She was fun to shoot in that it was a breeze -- anything you ask her to do, she does, perfectly, no questions. To the left, same on the right, roar like a lion ... whatever. But she was all business, no kind of spontaneous ideas or collaborative chit-chat. If I didn't direct, like a machine she simply stopped and waited. She's the kind of model you want if you're shooting a clothing catalog. But if you're trying to make creative art, probably not so much. But it was exactly what I needed to experience. So it was a great shoot. Thanks! On Fri, Apr 27, 2012 at 11:18 AM, David Savage ozsav...@gmail.com wrote: She looks like a lot of fun to shoot. 100/2.8 Macro Issue - Thoughts?
I've started having problems with this lens that are weird. I don't think it's operator error... It didn't want to AF last time I had it on (was using more as a telephoto). I just mounted it again, and had the same issue. It seems to hunt a bit but does not achieve focus and stops. It was on the 'A' setting and the view through the viewfinder was very dark. I turned the aperture ring to 2.8 and voila it focuses. I then returned it to 'A' and it focuses with no problem, as it always has, regardless of what I set aperture to via the body. However, if I take the lens off the camera, and put it back on, it's behavior goes to as stated earlier, it doesn't want to focus. I've repeated this half a dozen time and it's the same each time I try it. Idea's? You don't say if you are using the F, FA, DA or DA WR version. My FA100 will sometimes refuse to get a focus lock and sit at infinity. I press in the mount lock button to release the AF drive and manually focus to approximate focus and it then seems to work ok till the next time it decides it can't focus on what I'm asking it to look at and I do the same thing. Leon Yeah that was stupid of me. It's the tank-artillery-shell-bodied FA/100 2.8 Macro. It seems to be related to the aperture lever/control on the lens. It appears through the viewfinder that it's totally stopped down in 'A' mode, even when the camera body says f/2.8, f/4, etc. Setting the lens manually to a big aperture allows it to AF (viewfinder brightens), then resetting it to 'A' mode, viewfinder continues to appear bright and AF continues to work. Take the lens off the body, put it back on, same issue repeats. Thanks Leon, et al. On Apr 27, 2012, at 4:13 PM, Tom C wrote: I've started having problems with this lens that are weird. Re: 100/2.8 Macro Issue - Thoughts?
I had an A* 300 f/2.8 that had a problem with the aperture cam/lever control/or? sticking wide open. Got some terrible over exposures. Send it to Pentax for repair. When I got it back, I gave it a try by hand before mounting it and it stuck. Tried it several more times and it did not stick again. Used it for several years after that and had no problem. At least I had no problem images tell me so. Have you tried working that aperture linkage by hand to check if it's working freely? You don't say if you are using the F, FA, DA or DA WR version. My FA100 will sometimes refuse to get a focus lock and sit at infinity. I press in the mount lock button to release the AF drive and manually focus to approximate focus and it then seems to work ok till the next time it decides it can't focus on what I'm asking it to look at and I do the same thing. It's done it on all the digital cameras I've owned *istD, K10, K7 and K5. I can't remember it doing it on the MZ-S, but that doesn't mean it didn't. I don't know if this helps you or not. I don't use it much now days and usually only on manual focus as I have the DA WR version for field work (smaller and weather resistant is good when knee deep in sea water). Hi Igor - Thanks for looking. Regarding the Lensbabies - they make a lot of lenses anymore, but I have only tried the Muse and the 3g (which is essentially the Muse in a harness.) It's a specialty lens for sure. I've only used the plastic lens and it produces a soft and impressionistic image. It is similar to a Holga in many ways - soft, impressionistic, nostalgic in feel, soft aberrations, a sweet spot that is rather sharp with progressively more distortion and softness radiating out from it. I think that a lot of the magic of Holgas is that the sweet spot / distortion effect makes it easy to isolate the subject. Plus, you get the emotive / nostalgic effects from visual elements that mimic old time box cameras etc. The lensbaby more or less lets you control all that stuff, and let's you control the exposure (anathema to a Holga shooter.) I say it 'more or less' lets you control things because the Muse offers little control - you have to push and pull on the lens, swivel it around, and shoot. You can never duplicate the same shot. I think that was a feature initially and they wanted to include a good degree of randomness in the lensbaby. But, the 3g lets you super fine tune and control everything as much as you might want to. I hand-held the shots of the cat, but to be able to focus using a helicoid focusing mechanism was a vast improvement over pushing and pulling on the muse. Like I said - I don't know about their new offerings. And the lensbabies work better on full frame bodies where the sweet spot can be a smaller part of the frame. But they work OK on APS-C digitals as well! Maybe the lady in the booth was just having a bad day... Re: orchid
Bob, I'm uncertain if you're saying that because Seminole never signed a peace treaty that they therefore don't have rights to hunt, fish or harvest in restricted areas? Are you saying that this scene is completely unrealistic? Or did you mention the lack of treaty as an interesting bit of information about the Seminoles? cheers, frank What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof. -- Christopher Hitchens --- Original Message --- From: Bob Sullivan rf.sulli...@gmail.com Sent: April 27, 2012 4/27/12 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Subject: Re: orchid Frank, The clip is amusing. Frank, I think the Seminoles have the best claim to 'We are not be bound by your laws.' The scene isn't realistic, but that's because of the ranger. Regards, Bob S.
