Re: PESO Rawrrrr!

2012-04-28 Thread Bruce Walker
Believe it or not, Walt, but aspiring models often have trouble
finding photogs to help build up their portfolios. So they publish
cellphone and P&S shots, often from their friends, just to get the
minimum quota needed to open an account at Model Mayhem.

Once you have a photographer account there with a few decent shots in
it, you'll likely get inquiries from such models looking to shoot.

 Thank you!

Walt, my advice fwiw: don't expend energy trying to persuade reluctant
folks to sit for you. Once you discover that there are people who will
crawl over broken glass to have you photograph them, you'll forget all
 about the reticent ones.

Even if you manage to sweet talk or bribe a reluctant or shy person
into posing, unless you are lucky (or very skilled) their discomfort,
even mild, will show in the pictures you get.

Put the word out through your family and friends that you're looking
for willing portraiture subjects, and that you'll give them shots in
return. Tell them to ask their friends and family. Mention that you
need help and practice -- people like to help.

Walt, what city are you in? I can do a quick search on Model Mayhem for
 you.

Once you have a bit of a portfolio, show that to people. You'll get
more positive responses once you can actually show folks what you can
 do.

Here's a survey question... as an invited guest at a wedding, do you
bring your dslr?

A good friend of mine got married this weekend... I almost didn't
bring it, but in the end, I threw the k-5& FA 50 in my purse "just in
case" I wanted it later

It's funny territory, I think. There's a pro on hand to capture the
day. Yet, the number of cell phone and p&s cams being held aloft in
the pews is almost comical... On the other hand, maybe the dslr seems
a bit much? I mean, you don't want to be Uncle Harry, elbowing the pro
out of the way to get your shot of the happy couple...

Hmm. Maybe the K-01 (in white, of course) for this type of occasion
would be appropriate. I'll have to see if it fits in an evening
bag...

There is also the case that the hood is probably designed for full frame, and
is therefore less effective than it might be on APS. I ran into this with the
horrible hood on my FA31. What I ended up doing was stacking a bunch of filter
size reducing rings to emulate the wonderfully effective hood on the DA40.

It didn't want to AF last time I had it on (was using more as a
telephoto). I just mounted it again, and had the same issue. It seems
to hunt a bit but does not achieve focus and stops.

It was on the 'A' setting and the view through the viewfinder was very
dark. I turned the aperture ring to 2.8 and voila it focuses. I then
returned it to 'A' and it focuses with no problem, as it always has,
regardless of what I set aperture to via the body.

However, if I take the lens off the camera, and put it back on, it's
behavior goes to as stated earlier, it doesn't want to focus. I've
repeated this half a dozen time and it's the same each time I try it.

Idea's?

Re: totally OT - for you math oriented (disoriented?) guys ...

2012-04-28 Thread P. J. Alling
There's nothing statistical about this at all really. The answer is in
the raw data chart, actual distribution of values where a three digit
number from 1 to 999 has all three place digits added together. The
chart is handy but we're using it for something it's not designed for.
The simple answer is that there two values for each spot. Top is 14 and
13 each with 75 occurrences. The next is 12 and 15 with 73 and so on.
to 1 and 26 with 3 each and finally 27 all by itself with 1 since "0",
as in "000" has been excluded by definition.

Thanks to all for the congrats and input. I will certainly be posting
some stuff shot with the Sigma 28mm f1.8. While I know that there are
(no doubt) optical compromises that needed to be made in the interests
of the fast maximum aperture (or is it minimum aperture...) I figured
that there would be fewer compromises the longer the focal length.
This seems to be seen when you compare the reviews of the lenses
(Sigma 20mm, 24mm, 28mm all f1.8).

I also liked the fact that the 28mm covers full frame. That means that
on a crop camera, I'm cropping out the edges/corners where,
presumably, the greater objectionables would appear. I also think that
some people don't know how to use a hood, or leave it off on purpose.

We'll see. There are quite a few "WHAT a lens" reviews on the 28mm
f1.8. It should be here next Friday. Hopefully I'll get to shoot with
it next weekend.

Wow.

Looking through some of the work the ladies post in their portfolios at
MM -- particularly the ones who are local -- I think I could probably
hold my own. I've seen a lot that I would cull on my first review of a
group of party photos.

I mean, you can tell the ladies are really attractive, but I can't
believe the number of less-than-flattering photos they post. It's almost
as if they prefer to be in a "cool picture" than look beautiful in them.

shoot description. If they think your shots will benefit their

Here's one who is a fitness and bikini model:

If you read her resume it says "some experience". If you examine her

done and a whole lot of snapshots. She needs more good shots for her
portfolio.

She's a good candidate to approach. She may want gas-money if it's a
fairly long drive to the location.

On a first encounter they'll likely want to bring a friend. You can
put the friend to work holding a reflector or helping keep the model's

You'll get
more positive responses once you can actually show folks what you can
do.

Thanks, Bruce -- for the advice and the offer to help out in finding models.

I'm in a bit of a sticky situation in that regard, living in a town of about
350 people, and the biggest town within reasonable driving distance being
about 35,000 (Paducah, Kentucky). Though, despite the lack of a big
population center, I don't really have that much trouble finding people to
pose for me. In fact, I constantly have people asking me if I'll take
pictures of their daughters/sons/grandkids, etc. The biggest challenge is
getting people to follow up after they ask me. I've come to the conclusion
that, for a lot of people, when they find out you're a photographer, they
just like to say things like that as a means of small-talk.

Normally, when someone asks me to do something like that, I stipulate that
I'm not by any means a pro photographer with a studio and lighting and
backdrops. At that point, they say, "Oh, I don't care about that! I'm sure
you'd do a great job!" Then, they never bother contacting me about it.

Which is really OK with me, to be honest. Whenever I try to talk someone
into posing for me (like the young lady I mentioned), I'm looking to take
very casual portraits. I manage to get decent results whenever I do it
completely impromptu -- even when they're shy or reluctant. I just try to
catch them in unguarded moments. (I'm not quite sure I'd be all that
comfortable in a formal "sitting" situation, myself.)

I guess my approach could be best described as getting someone to simply be
somewhere (or tell me where they're going to be), let them just do what they
do and be who they are, and tell them to just try to ignore me -- or at
least p

I'm in a bit of a sticky situation in that regard, living in a town of
about 350 people, and the biggest town within reasonable driving
distance being about 35,000 (Paducah, Kentucky). Though, despite the
lack of a big population center, I don't really have that much trouble
finding people to pose for me. In fact, I constantly have people asking
me if I'll take pictures of their daughters/sons/grandkids, etc. The
biggest challenge is getting people to follow up after they ask me. I've
come to the conclusion that, for a lot of people, when they find out
you're a photographer, they just like to say things like that as a means
of small-talk.

Normally, when someone asks me to do something like that, I stipulate
that I'm not by any means a pro photographer with a studio and lighting
and backdrops. At that point, they say, "Oh, I don't care about that!
I'm sure you'd do a great job!" Then, they never bother contacting me
about it.

Which is really OK with me, to be honest. Whenever I try to talk someone
into posing for me (like the young lady I mentioned), I'm looking to
take very casual portraits. I manage to get decent results whenever I do
it completely impromptu -- even when they're shy or reluctant. I just
try to catch them in unguarded moments. (I'm not quite sure I'd be all
that comfortable in a formal "sitting" situation, myself.)

I guess my approach could be best described as getting someone to simply
be somewhere (or tell me where they're going to be), let them just do
what they do and be who they are, and tell them to just try to ignore me
-- or at least pretend I'm not there. That's why I like to shoot at
gatherings and events. I just love capturing candid moments, and I'm
pretty good at putting people at ease once I've had a chance to mingle
and blend in.

One thing that may be hurting you is when you tell people you're not
any good (which is what your stipulations are doing), they'll believe
you.

When someone asks you if you can take photos of their kids/grand-kids,
just say yes. The only thing you need them to think about is when &
where you're going to do the shoot. Get a commitment on that.

You don't need a studio for informal portraits. Find some public
locations that substitute for those studio backgrounds you don't have
& use the tools you *do* have. All you need is a "neutral" background
you can throw out of focus and skylight. Earth tones ROCK!

Add a little fill flash and you're good to go for informal portraits.

As you build your portfolio, you build your professionalism, and
moreover build your reputation for professionalism. That might help
reassure the shy young lady that you're not just clown with a camera
trying to hit on her.

Thanks for the tips, John!

I have something set up (as of a couple of weeks ago) to shoot some
photos of a young lady who'll be graduating from high school sometime
between the 15th and 18th of May, and to shoot a gathering of her family
while they're in town to attend her graduation.

I have a "vague" sense of where I want to do the shoot (they're a big
nature-loving family, and we happen to have a couple of wildlife
preserves within a few miles of my home), but the challenge will be
finding specific locations/settings. I really do feel more comfortable
shooting people outdoors -- so the earth tones will be easy to come by.

I guess the next logical step is in finding out the most affordable way
of putting together a reasonably professional-looking portfolio, (print
sizes, etc.) and whether I should do separate portfolios for the
different types of shooting I do, or whether to put together one
all-encompassing one. And, of course, the question of how many shots I
should have in order to give a sufficient representation.

Re: PESO Rawrrrr!

2012-04-28 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thanks for the information and all the suggestions/tips, Bruce!

Another of my big obstacles is not having the first clue as to how to go
about approaching the whole thing. I don't have a great number of shots
with people in them to put together -- which is why I tend to bug young
ladies like the one I mentioned in my initial reply.

Using an actual, somewhat experienced, model is obviously something I'll
need to work up to. What I need more than anything is a local
photographer with some experience in that area to shadow or assist on a
shoot someday. I should look around the web for some video tutorials,
too. Up 'til now, my approach has been to be completely non-directorial,
sit back and wait for the moment -- hoping they won't strike a pose the
moment they notice me pointing the camera at them (which typically
annoys the hell out of me).

I truly am a complete novice when it comes to anything about this kind
of shooting, so I'm going to need to actually see how it's done, I
guess. I have a few Facebook friends who are local photographers, so I
may just have to put out feelers and see if I can sit in on a few
sessions to pick up some pointers.

Thanks again for all the info!

All you need to do is come up with an idea for a shoot, eg theme,
location, wardrobe, any props, and approach these folks with your
shoot description. If they think your shots will benefit their
portfolio they'll agree to it. Be prepared to show some of your best
work (edit brutally) and they better have people in them. :-)

Here's one who is a fitness and bikini model:
http://www.modelmayhem.com/1648238

If you read her resume it says "some experience". If you examine her
portfolio you see that she's had one fitness set of pro-level shots
done and a whole lot of snapshots. She needs more good shots for her
portfolio.

She's a good candidate to approach. She may want gas-money if it's a
fairly long drive to the location.

On a first encounter they'll likely want to bring a friend. You can
put the friend to work holding a reflector or helping keep the model's
hair tidy.

Anyways, good luck!

Great shot, Bruce!

I know a young lady who's the spitting image of that model, and I've been
pestering her to let me take photos of her for about a year now. She's

19 and gets hit on a lot by older men, so I figure that's the biggest

You'll get
more positive responses once you can actually show folks what you can
do.

;-)

My main picture is the one I'm in front of. I'll probably PESO it some
day, but not now.
The print can be yours for 900 € BTW.

Good work Larry.

This one

deserves to be among the winners, IMO that's THE winner.

Studio strobe with bands

2012-04-28 Thread Larry Colen
Last week I posted some photos I took of my friend Aeriol, when I used my White
Lightning to photograph her gig at a local bar.

I finally had a chance to go back and process the photos of the rest of the
band. I hate to say this, because it's a bit of a pain in the ass to use, but
the studio strobe seems to have worked pretty well. I apologize for the size
of the set, but I was compromising between getting a reasonable sized set for
each musician, trimming it down to a reasonable number, and not spending all
night deciding which photos to throw away. I'm afraid that I don't remember
which photos were taken under which lighting setup. I had pretty much a
straight lamp, lamp shooting through a white umbrella, lamp with grid, lamp
bouncing off a mirror on the far wall with some spill from the barn door as
fill, and even some just using the modeling lamp as a hot light.

Set of flickr, showing all the thumbnails:

And on fluidr so you can see the EXIF data
